EIGHT MONTHS AFTER TYPHOON SENDONG
5,000 evacuees in Oro still homeless AROUND 5,000 evacuees remain homeless, eight months after Typhoon Sendong swamped and ravaged Cagayan de Oro City. Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma said the survivors continue to stay in evacuation sites while the church, local government and other multisectoral organizations are striving to help them avail the Community Mortgage Program. Since December, Ledesma said around 2,000 families have already been relocated and were granted permanent housing units. He said that the acquisition of the lands is needed for the construction of the more housing units for the displaced families. “The community mortgage program of the government should continue because there are about 5,000 more families are hoping that they’ ll be provided with permanent housing units,” Ledesma
said over Radio Veritas Tuesday. The archbishop also said that the Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council, composed of church, government agencies, nongovernment organizations (NGOs) and other organizations, is doing all efforts to strengthen the government’s disaster risk reduction program. He added that initiatives are also being made to protect the area’s watershed to avoid flash floods or a repeat of the tragedy brought by typhoon Sendong. Headed by Ledesma, the Council was formed in 2010 to protect and rehabilitate CDO’s watershed in light of the rampant mining activities going within the watershed area. cbcpnews.com

Unabia announces unequivocal support for Babiera By BONG FABE Contributing editor
UNABIA
CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Congressman Pedro Unabia (1 st District, Misamis Oriental) has announced his unequivocal support to the Liberal Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Vice Governor Norris Babiera. Unabia made the announcement in an inter-
view days before he will officially swear his oath of membership to the administration party. The neophyte congressman is still a member of Padayon Pilipino, the party of Babiera’s rival for governor, last-termer Congressman Yevgeny Vincente “Bambi” Emano. Unabia said he has already informed Emano,
only son of Padayon’s founder, reelectionist Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano, of his support for Babiera during their heart-to-heart talk at Gloria Maris Restaurant Saturday night. “Gipasabot ko si Congressman Emano nga si Vice Governor Babiera ang akong suportahan sa umaabot nga piliay. Ug dako ang akong
pasalamat sa iyang pagsabot (I explained to Congressman Emano that I will support Vice Governor Babiera in the coming elections. And I am grateful for his understanding),” he said. He denied rumors that his bolting Emano’s homegrown party was because of personal interest and political survival. “Wala akoy pagmahay ug
kasuko sa mga Emano o sa Padayon. Ug ako nanghinaot nga masabtan usab ako ni Mayor Emano (I don’t have any anger towards the Emanos or Padayon. And I hope that Mayor Emano also understand me,” he said. He explained that as representative of the people of the first congressional district of the SUPPORT/PAGE 9
