Tungawan farmers undergo Farm Business School training

7

PARPO II Mohammad Dassan Adju giving a message during the launching of the Farm Business School.

MORE THAN 30 farmers in barangay Timbabauan, Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay will experience once again the rigors of going back to school after having been enrolled in the Farm Business School (FBS) program of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR). The FBS is a type of schooling that takes place outside the formal education system. It is an approach in building the capacity of farmers where school is without walls as sessions take place in the respective area of the participating farmers where they can actually observe, analyze, experiment, consult and identify solutions to the problems confronting them. It is a forum which seeks to address business and marketing problems and opportuni-

ties for the farmers. Its objective is to work with farmers to help them acquire knowledge and enhance their entrepreneurial skills to make their farms more profitable. The class will be undertaking 25 training sessions which all revolve on the concept of managing the farm business like organizing, producing, monitoring and marketing. The program is applying the “learning by doing” methodology and farmer-to-farmer exchange of knowledge approach. During the launching ceremony held last September 25, 2018 in the said town, Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer II Mohammad Dassan Adju said that the program is a tool to increase farmers’ production and income.

“Going to formal school is hardly possible for most farmers due to old age plus the difficulty in attending regular classes because of their household responsibilities,” PARPO Adju explained. “That’s the very reason why DAR brought the school directly to their farms so they can participate well and better equip them with new farm technologies and techniques.” “Under this program, we will not only focus on the production but also in the marketing aspect,” Adju said. “DAR is serious in getting involved in the development of the agrarian reform beneficiaries organizations and the upliftment of the lives of the agrarian reform beneficiaries by helping them increase their income,” he added.

According to Nicolas Pameron, Municipal Agrarian Reform Program Officer of Tungawan, the participating farmers are the members of Agro-Women Workers Association, a group of ARBs’ spouses in Timbabauan ARB cooperative. The officers of the coop have likewise shown interest to participate in the FBS program. The learners will be given a hands-on training on the production and marketing of high value vegetables. Engr. Gina Calunsag, the FBS Provincial Focal Person who is also the resource person-facilitator in most of the training sessions, said that the program is set to be completed on the second week of October with the graduation rite as the culminating activity.
