Jesus Miracle Crusade ‘prayer warriors’ brave rebel stronghold to bring words of God Continued fr om page 1 from “And we did, we were able to convince the group of Ka Alde through the power of God and his words to surrender and embrace God in their lives. It was very moving, it’s so emotional and in the end, God is victorious,” he told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. He said not only Salusad and his followers accepted and embraced God; they also donated a parcel of land for the JMCIM so it can put up a chapel in the heart of NIPAR’s stronghold in the town. According to Cuarteros, Salusad also told village leaders to play worship songs every morning to remind them of God and the glorious mission of JMCIM. “That journey of faith and mission from God has become one of my most unforgettable experiences and it is a mission of peace,”
Cuarteros said. “Ka Alde and his group accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour and they wanted to start a new life through the JMCIM.” Salusad, who is also being hunted by the now rival group NPA, has reportedly wanted to be part of the government’s militia force or CAFGU which is the acronym for Civilian Armed Force Geographical Unit, to protect communities from lawless elements in the province. Cuarteros also said his younger sister, Eliza Buenabides, whom he did not see for a long time and her husband, sheltered his group while they were in San Fernando town. The JMCIM – led by an internationally known pastor Evangelist Wilde Almeda and his wife, Assistant Pastor Lina Almeda – is one of the largest and most successful apostolic churches based in
the Philippines with millions of followers in the country alone. It has stations also in the United States and other parts of the world. It was also Almeda who led a dozen “prayer warriors,” including Cuarteros, to a miraculous journey and mission of 100-days of fasting and prayers that victoriously convinced the rebel group Abu Sayyaf to release the 21 Sipadan hostages in Talipao town in Sulu province in 2000. Almeda’s group also managed to convince a senior rebel leader Galib Andang, alias Commander Robot and his group to embrace the Christian faith and baptized them. And the victorious peace mission is related in vivid detail in the book, “Miracles in Moroland” written by American professor Dr. Sam Smith. (Mindanao Examiner)

COTABATO CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DPWH-ARMM) has programmed this year various projects in the five provinces of the region with total allocation of P10 billion. In a press conference dubbed “Tapatan sa ARMM”, newly installed Secretary Don Mustapha Loong said his department is speeding up work to meet its target of implementing these projects within the year. Secretary Loong is continuing the reform agenda started by the previous administration of former secretary Engr. Emil Sadain and the regional government. Engr. Sadain, the head of the regional
public works agency for the past three years, is now the DPWH national office’s assistant secretary for foreign-funded projects. Secretary Loong reiterated that the DPWHARMM has many flagship projects in the region’s five provinces. In 2014, the DPWH-ARMM targeted P5-billion worth of projects, which include 400 kilometers of roads, 13 bridges, 17 seaports and 12 drainage structures. “As of now, projects for 2014 had achieved a physical accomplishment of 70%,” Sec. Loong said. The P10-billion worth of projects this year includes 500 kilometers of roads, 45 seaports and 91 water supply systems. “We are now doing things faster and system-
atic and strengthening our partnership with the local government units for the people of ARMM in order for them to have cheaper transport of goods and products, better access to tourism sites, and mainly to uplift the lives of the people in the region,” he added. The agency is currently working on flood control and drainage improvement projects to minimize flooding during the rainy season. DPWH-ARMM is also focusing on roads leading to tourist spots in partnership with the ARMM’s Tourism department. “This will boost the region’s tourism industry and will attract more visitors and tourists,” he added. Sayyaf man in 2001 killings captured ZAMBOANGA CITY – Security forces have captured an Abu Sayyaf rebel involved in the 2001 abduction and beheading of 15 farm workers in the southern Philippine province of Basilan, officials said. Insp. Dahlan Samuddin, a regional police spokesman, said Abdula Indanan, alias Alkobar, was captured in the village of Paniongan in Lantawan town. He said
policemen, backed by soldiers, swooped down on Abdula’s hideout after a long surveillance operation last week. He said Indanan was among those who abducted the farm workers in Golden Harvest Plantation in Lantawan’s Tairan village. The hostages were used by the Abu Sayyaf as shield against pursuing troops and then killed
them one by one as the gunmen escaped to the mountains. Samuddin said the rebel is long wanted in Basilan and is facing multiple criminal cases. Authorities have tagged the Abu Sayyaf – which is fighting for an Islamic state – in the spate of terror attacks not only in Basilan, but elsewhere in Mindanao, including Zamboanga City. We cannot stay here longer because they will behead us if their demands are not met. Whoever is watching this video, please help us, have pity on us.) Buligao also appealed
to politicians in Dapitan City to help them. “Help us, please have mercy on us,” he said. One of the armed men clad in a police uniform, who appeared to be the leader of the group, also read a message from his cell phone and said: “Kami ay nakabihag ng dalawang Coast Guard at isang barangay captain, nanawagan kami na maibigay ninyo ang hinihingi namin sa lalong madaling panahon kung hindi ninyo maibigay ang hinihingi namin ay pupugutan namin ang ulo ng isa sa mga bihag na ito o lahat sila.” (We are holding two Coast Guard and a village chieftain, we are calling (on the government) to give us our demand soon and if you will not heed to our demand, we shall behead one of the hostages, or all of them.) The gunman did not say anything about their demand in exchange for the safe release of the hostages, but other reports claimed the kidnappers demanded at least P3 million ransoms. (Mindanao Examiner)

COTABATO CITY – After almost four months of staying in different evacuation centers, more than 120,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maguindanao have successfully returned to their respective communities, bringing the number of displaced residents in the province to zero. During the commemoration of the World Refugee Day in Cotabato City, Atty. Laisa Alamia, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) executive secretary, announced that as of June 4, Maguindanao has “zero IDP”. Around 24,000 families, or about 120,000 individuals, from 11 towns in Maguindanao were displaced due to an intensified law enforcement operation launched by the military starting in February this year against the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and other terrorist groups. The military operation that dragged for more than two months also disrupted classes in schools involving at least 16,000 elementary and secondary students.
In line with the observance of the World Refugee Day, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees conducted an IDP forum aimed at updating the public on the state of internally displaced people in Mindanao and in ARMM in particular. Various line agencies including local and international humanitarian organizations attended the event. Part of the commemoration was the sharing of experiences of some IDPs during the intensified law enforcement operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Zainudin Ukas Mohamad, a farmer from the town of Talayan, said it was never easy living in an evacuation center noting he hopes that someday genuine peace will be achieved. “Natutulog kami sa lupa at dahon lang ng saging ang aming banig (We slept on the ground using banana leaves as our mat),” he said. “Sana magkaroon na ng tunay na kapayapaan sa aming lugar (I hope there will be genuine peace in our area),” he added. Saiduna Dalimbang,
16, from Nimao, Datu Piang, said despite experiencing the hardships of being an evacuee at a very young age, she does not lose hope of becoming a nurse someday. “Noong 2008 ako unang nagbakwit, Grade 1 ako noon (I first evacuated in 2008, I was in Grade 1 then),” she said. “Sa kabila ng paulitulit na gulo, hindi ako nawawalan ng pag-asa na magiging nurse din ako (Despite the recurring conflict in our area, I am still hoping that someday I will become a nurse),” she added. The United Nations established the World Refugee Day “to honor the courage, strength and determination of women, men, and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.” It is a day “to recognize the resilience of forcibly displaced people throughout the world.” This year, the event focused on bringing to the public the side of the IDPs through sharing of their stories of hope and resilience. 2 soldiers gunned down in restive Maguindanao province SUSPECTED rebels killed two government soldiers in downtown Shariff Aguak in the restive Muslim province of Maguindanao inn southern Philippines, the army said. The soldiers, whose names were not released by the army, were buying materials for a school project when gunmen attacked them last week. The army did not say how many gunmen were involved in the attack, but they also took the soldiers’ motorcycle before fleeing. Army Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, a spokeswoman for the 6th Infantry Division, said the victims were members of the 34th Infantry Battalion which is
currently working on the rehabilitation of Meta Elementary School in the neighboring Datu Unsay town. “The unidentified perpetrators took the motorcycle of the victims after shooting one in the head and the other at the back. Responding elements of the 34th Infantry Battalion were able to bring the soldiers to the hospital in Maguindanao, but they were already declared dead upon arrival,” she said. Petinglay condemned the twin killings and quickly blamed the attack on the separatist Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. “The incident clearly manifest that the BIFF
members are treacherous and will eventually strike at soldiers who are not involved in actual combat operation if given the opportunity. This only further proves that the group does not care for the welfare and the future of the children within their communities,” she said. There was no immediate statement from the BIFF, but previous attacks on military targets were also carried out by sympathizers or supporters of the rebel group which is fighting for independence in Mindanao region. Karachi heat wave: Unforgiving heat claims more lives gling. The stench of death is felt even before visitors reach the gates. A handwritten sign outside says the morgue is filled to capacity, while bodies lie outside. Daily power outages, as the city tries to keep up with the demands of 16 million residents, mean the cold storage unit that houses bodies is hot and sticky. The dead, it seems, are denied the dignity they deserve. Brutal heat The city is used to baking in the heat around this time of the year, just before
the monsoon rains arrive as welcome relief. But this year's heat wave has been particularly brutal. It began last week. Temperatures reached 44.8 degrees Celsius (112.64 degrees Fahrenheit) -- the highest-recorded temperature in the country in the last 15 years. Cooler temperatures are expected to arrive later in the week. Ramadan obligations The heat wave comes at a time when this predominantly Muslim country's citizens are observing Ramadan. During the holy
month, the faithful fast from sunup until sundown. This means that, amidst these scorching temperatures, Pakistanis are forgoing food and water. Clerics are reminding residents that they can forego fasting if they feel the soaring temperatures are life-threatening. "My son had a high temperature and then he had a fit," one woman told CNN Asked if she had water and electricity, she replied, "Nothing. We have none of those things." (Saima Mohsin and Euan McKirdy, CNN)
A man shifts a heatwave victim to a hospital in Pakistan's worst-hit citym Karachi. Officials say hundreds have died in a heat wave in southern Pakistan, as the government called in the army to help tackle widespread heatstroke in Karachi. PAKISTAN - The unforgiving heat has spared no one. The very young, the very old and those in the prime of their lives. Corpses covered in flies lie outside city morgues. Inside, bodies up on bodies are piled high. Hospitals are overwhelmed, relying on volunteers and donors for ice, water and even spare beds. By Thursday, the death toll from the oppressive heat wave in Sindh province topped 1,000, officials told CNN.
But even without the numbers, the full extent of the misery isn't hard to gauge. Ov er whelmed hospital Over erwhelmed At the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center in Sindh's capital, Karachi, heat stroke victims are wheeled in daily, swelling the numbers well beyond capacity. The overwhelmed doctors and nurses do what they can. But with supplies limited, the government-run hospital is relying on volun-
teers and donors for even the basic necessities, they say. Family members tend to many of the patients, wiping their brows with sponges and keeping them cool with wet, grimy towels. "I felt so hot, I was vomiting," an elderly man told CNN. "I felt weak and my heart sank." Ov erpacked mor gue Overpacked morgue At the Edhi morgue, the largest still operating in Karachi, the picture is even more dismal. A charity runs the facility, but it's strug-

LA VIVIENDA Grilled Shawarma, owned by the 69-year old veteran cook Rudy Bravo, at San Jose Road in Zamboanga City is surely a place that I will visit very often after I tasted their delicious Shawurma or Shawarma – a Levantine Arab meat preparation similar to Taco where beef or chicken, or lamb or veal, are placed on a pointed rod for holding meat over a fire, or grilled on a pan. The small road-side restaurant offers a wide variety of Arabic and Mexican Shawarma, and a fusion of Filipino-style Shawarma, omelette, escalope, burgers and mouth-watering sauces from barbecue to curry and their super-flaming “volcanic” chili oil and the lesser hot, but still super spicy “dynamite” chili and garlic oil which will surely make you sweat because of its very hot, hot and hot, but deliciously superb taste made from a blend of chilies and other herbs and spices. The five-year old La Vivienda – which literally means “home” or “dwelling” in Spanish – continues to draw and attract a steady influx of diners because of its good-tasting, clean and quality, delicious Shawarma at a
very affordable prices ranging from P75 to P90. The humble owner says the secret of his Shawarma house is the high quality of the meat he uses and of course, the cleanliness of his great tasting Sharwarma and his fresh dough grilled to perfection, and sauces that go along with it. The great service of the food attendants
adds up to the assets of the La Vivienda. I highly recommend La Vivienda Grilled Shawarma. Hurry, go and visit La Vivienda and don’t forget your handkerchief and get ready for that “dynamite” taste! (Food review by Al Jacinto for Mindanao Examiner Regional Newspaper)
The US Must Stop Enabling Israel by Alon Ben-Meir NO ONE can deny the close, abiding, and unparalleled friendship between the United States and Israel. This tight bond has served both countries well, especially Israel, which has benefitted politically, economically, and militarily from the US’s unwavering support, helping Israel to become a powerhouse second to none in the Middle East. It appears, though, that this unequivocal American support and friendship enabled Israel to become more entrenched in the West Bank by building and expanding the settlements and expropriating Palestinian land, thereby making the prospect of achieving peace ever more remote. Regardless of the wars and violent conflicts sweeping the region since Israel’s inception, the US maintained a steady hand in its support of Israel, even at the expense of its own strategic interests in the area. Friendship, after all, whether between countries or individuals, carries with it a moral responsibility and obligation to lend aid, advice, resources, and protection as the case may warrant. An ethical difficulty arises, however, when one realizes that instead of helping a friend, one is in fact allowing, or enabling, that friend to harm himself. To use a simple analogy, if my friend is addicted to drugs, there quickly comes a point where readily giving him money (in the Israeli-US situation, providing Israel with military aid, economic assistance, and especially
political cover) is directly contributing to the continuation of this devastating habit. It is precisely in the name of friendship that I must refuse to give that which my friend so ardently desires. Such a policy of ‘tough love’ is never easy or pleasant, and certainly unpopular – as Nietzsche put it, “This is the hardest of all: to close the open hand out of love…” US-Israel relations are presently at a historic low because Obama was willing to show a little tough love by exerting limited pressure on Israel to suspend settlement activity. The irony here is that while the US believes that Israeli-Arab peace will provide Israel with ultimate longterm security, it did not exert sufficient pressure on Israel to pursue peace, which of necessity requires significant concessions. Every day that the US allows the continuation of the occupation, it is inadvertently compromising Israel’s national security, even though the US is committed to safeguard that very thing. Israel is digging itself deeper while the US remains its protector and the prospect for a two-state solution becomes dimmer, threatening Israel’s very existence as a Jewish and democratic state. The US must no longer give Israel a blank check, hoping that it will use it wisely. Israel has failed that test and the US is becoming as a result complicit in Israel’s self-destructive policy. Given that the US has a moral and material stake in Israel’s

wellbeing and is committed to its preservation, it must be in a position to shape and influence Israel’s conduct, particularly in relation to its conflict with the Palestinians. There are those who argue that Israel is a sovereign state and no other country, including the US, can dictate what Israel can or cannot do. The problem is that Israel depends on the US politically, and to safeguard its national security, and cannot at the same time defy the US and continue to expect this unconditional support. Other than the damage the US’s current policy has caused to Israel’s national security interests, the US has lost much of its credibility in the region. The Arab states accuse the US of lacking impartiality in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and they go as far as suggesting that America is in Israel’s pocket. As it is, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is extremely difficult to resolve and is further burdened by differing historical and religious accounts and claims, and every day that passes without a solution makes the conflict ever more intractable. Prime Minister Netanyahu believes he can defy the US with impunity; one can count on him (contrary to his public protestations) to make every effort to stymie the creation of a Palestinian state. Only when the US changes its policy and is prepared to exert, in the main, political pressure on Israel, will the US be able to save Israel from its destructive path. The US must now work closely with its European and Arab allies to come up with a binding UNSC resolution that will compel both Israelis and Palestinians to sit down and negotiate a peace agreement. If Israel refuses to abide by the resolution or negotiate in good faith, the US should withdraw its political cover, thereby exposing Israel to international censure. Netanyahu, like most Israelis, simply takes American political support for granted. When he realizes he can no longer do so, he will have to heed the US’s advice and together develop new plans that will advance the peace process, or resign. That said, the current extreme right-wing coalition government led by Netanyahu will under no circumstances accede to the establishment of a Palestinian state, and it will unravel under international, especially American, pressure. Needless to say, this in no way exempts the Palestinians from fulfilling their own responsibility in negotiating in earnest and making the required concessions, however painful, with the objective of reaching an agreement. Like all of his predecessors, having judiciously watched Israel’s back, Obama has the obligation and moral responsibility to demand that Israel resume the negotiations in earnest. Although Israel has enjoyed tremendous political support from both Congress and the American people, there is a definite shift among the
public and leading politicians toward putting the onus on Israel. This seven decades-old debilitating conflict that has destabilized the Middle East and continues to feed into the region’s sweeping violent frenzy must come to an end. The US ought to be clear by explaining to the Israeli public in particular that time is running out. If Israel continues to build new and expand existing settlements, it will seriously and rapidly erode the prospect of a twostate solution. Israel must choose now
between a) remaining a Jewish and democratic state by ending the occupation and creating two states, b) becoming a one-state democracy (in which case the Palestinians will be the governing majority), or c) end up being an apartheid state subject to international condemnation, sanctions, and isolation. A change in American policy toward Israel in no way suggests that the US is less committed to Israel’s national security. On the contrary, because of the US’s unwavering commitment, it
becomes incumbent upon it morally and materially to end its enablement of Israel’s addiction to building more settlements, expropriating more land, and maintaining the occupation, which will destroy Israel as we know it. By demonstrating tough love, the US can fulfill its moral obligation to best serve Israel’s national security and preserve it as an independent Jewish and democratic state, which for nearly all Israelis is their most cherished dream. VECO rolls out power conservation campaign
T
HE Cebu Unplugged Campaign of the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) spreads to the barangays next month as the company advocates a lifestyle habit to adopt energy conservation measures in the household as a long-term goal, its manager said. Maria Theresa Sederiosa said the Cebu City Council has adopted the program and will launch the campaign in July which councillor Nida Cabrera spearheads being the chairperson of the Committee on Environment. “Cebu Unplugged will now be implemented in the 80 barangays of Cebu City,” said Sederiosa, adding that Cebu Province already passed a resolution adopting the program authored by Provincial Board Member Peter John
Calderon. Sederiosa said the conservation campaign in the barangays will not only focus on energy efficiency, but also water conservation. Cebu Unplugged campaign on the other hand, listed eight ways to conserve energy of which the number one rule is to unplug appliances and electronics when not in use because simply turning it off without unplugging it continues to consume energy. The other conservation measures listed are defrost refrigerator regularly to prevent build-up and cover up and save on cooling cost by blocking sun’s heat with curtains. Maximize use of washing machine in one go, shut the door of appliances, use gas burner instead of electric stove, turn on electric fans instead of air condition

units and choose energy-efficient appliances. “Power supply is almost equal to demand and to avert an energy crisis, we need to manage the problem from the demand side,” said Sederiosa. Cebu Unplugged won the Bronze Award in the 2nd Asia Pacific Stevie Awards 2015 in Shanghai, China recently. The campaign, launched in June last uyear, was pegged as “a different kind of people power.” Sederiosa said power demand in VECO’s franchise areas particularly Metro Cebu increases at an average growth of 4.5 to 5 percent as she placed emphasis on community involvement in energy conservation to prevent a possible power crisis.
