Laboratory tests in the hospital showed that Acedo suffered from liver damage, among others, that may had been cause by the pills she took. have repeatedly issued warning to the public anew to refrain from buying and taking drugs or food supplements that have not passed legitimate government laboratory tests after a wide array of these and other products have flooded on the Internet and online resellers on social media such as Facebook. The Food and Drug Administration or FDA has previously seized and ban more than two dozen slimming or anti-obesity products, which contained amphetamine, sibutramine, and steroids. It said these products were being marketed as oral capsules or as a coffee drinks. FDA said that amphetamine causes irregular heartbeat, confusion, urine retention and painful urination, hyperthermia, hyperreflexia, muscle pain, severe agitation, rapid breathing, and tremor. It said that large overdose of these chemicals may produce symptoms such as psychosis, anuria, cardiogenic shock, cerebral hemorrhage, circulatory collapse, extreme fever, pulmonary hypertension, renal failure, rapid muscle breakdown, serotonin syndrome, and stereotypy. Fatal amphetamine poisoning, it said,

resolve the issue of IDPs in the near future,” he said. He also noted that internal displacement is not an isolated case in the Philippines, but is a problem faced by other countries as well. Hundreds of IDPs who were sheltered at the sports complex have been relocated to the transitory sites to allow repair of the facility which housed thousands of families affected by rebel attacks in 2013. “The major recommendation is to immediately improve the conditions of the IDPs who have gone there from the Grandstand (sports complex). Mayor Climaco said: “During the siege, Grandstand was the haven for our displaced families. Now, as it rises again from the ground, it will be the symbol of a renewed hope of the entire Zamboangueño community. Plans are already in place to rehabilitate and improve the sports facility. We will build back better.” Beyani is also set to visit IDPs in different regions affected by natural and man-made calamities, particularly in Maguindanao, Tacloban and South Cotabato. Zamboanga City reports zero rabies cases ZAMBOANGA CITY – Health authorities have reported zero incidents of human rabies for the past six months in Zamboanga City where the local government continuously intensifies its vaccination and surveillance activities as part of a massive campaign aimed at eradicating contagious and fatal viral disease of dogs and other mammals. The Zamboanga City Rabies Eradication Control Coordinating Council

or ZCRECCC has made this report. City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola, who is also the ZCRECCC chairman, said records from his office as well as from the City Health Office or CHO reveal no human rabies cases registered from January to July 15. Arriola said they will continue to undertake vaccination and surveillance activities so as to control and prevent human rabies cases. He also

urged animal bite victims to report to their respective village council. He appealed to village leaders to organize their respective Barangay Rabies Council or BARC and activate their Astray Animal Management Team to help in the conduct of anti-rabies advocacies. Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain in humans and other warm-blooded animals. (Sheila Covarrubias)

ARMM launches road mapping and management system Members of the police bomb squad shortly after the blast inside the Manly Massage Parlor in downtown Zamboanga City in southern Philippines. (Photo by E. Dumaboc) AUTHORITIES said that the Abu Sayyaf was likely behind a recent bomb attack in Zamboanga City that left 11 casualties. Police said a woman was killed and 10 others wounded in the powerful blast that targeted Manly Massage Parlor along San Jose Road on the night of July 23. Officials said the bombing killed Geraldine Miguel, 30. The motive of the attack was unknown. Police and soldiers cordoned off the area to prevent civilians from getting near the site as members of the police bomb squad inspected the building. It was not immediately known what kind of explosive was used in the bombing.

“Debris were all over the place due to IED explosion and according to the police bomb squad, the blast occurred from the inside of the Manly Massage Parlor,” Councilor Jerry Perez, who was at the site, said in a radio interview. Radio stations e-Media and RMN identified the wounded as Teresita delos Santos; Cheska Mendoza, 24; Stephanie Cartel, 32; Nestor Alaban, 36; Alfredo Enojo, 55; Elizabeth Alarcon, 38; Rina Ananog, Nilo Gonzales, Reynalda delos Reyes and Karen Alvarez, 29. A security guard said one person was confirmed killed in the blast. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the explosion that also damaged several es-

tablishments nearby. Mayor Beng Climaco has appealed to citizens to stay calm and vigilant and report to authorities suspicious persons and abandoned baggage in their community. Just in November and December last year, suspected Abu Sayyaf bombers also detonated improvised explosives inside the Princess Massage Parlor and De Luxe Massage and Karaoke Bar along Tomas Claudio Street near San Jose and injured at least 3 people, including a policeman. Three people with suspected links to the Abu Sayyaf were arrested by the police in connection to last year’s the bombings. (Mindanao Examiner)

COTABATO CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DPWH-ARMM) launched the Expanded ARMM Roads Mapping and Management (E-ARMM) system, described as the country’s first. ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman and DPWH-ARMM Secretary Don Mustapha Loong led the launching of the P2.5million E-ARMM project on July 20. The system is aimed at establishing a database containing information on road projects including the connectivity conditions and other public infrastructure projects within the region,. This

also creates a network system involving the regional office and eight district engineering offices that will serve as data repository. “With the E-ARMM system, identification of right projects will be made easy that will lead towards accelerating the socio-economic condition of the ARMM,” said Sec. Loong. He reiterated that for the “first time in 23 years, the department will have an inventory of all national, provincial and municipal roads.” Through the E-ARMM system the public can easily check paved and unpaved roads in the region. DPWH-ARMM now boasts of having evolved from an agency identified with cor-

ruption to being the model for transparency and top performance in the region. DPWH-ARMM also inaugurated a P3.2-million annex building that houses the Commission on Audit office, staff house, and canteen inside the regional office in Cotabato City. Funds for the construction of the new building were taken from the department’s savings and was pursued as part of its continuing reform and providing a quality work place. “Our department exercises prudent fiscal management, which resulted in the generation of huge savings that were usefully utilized,” Sec. Loong said. (Bureau of Public Information)

Troops hunt Sayyafs rebels GOVERNMENT troops launched an operation against the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu province as part of a new campaign aimed at weakening the rebel group. Just last week, Abu Sayyaf rebels freed a teenager they kidnapped along with a three-year old boy after more than 3 months in captivity. The 17-year old female victim was brought to Zamboanga City following her release in Sulu province. But the fate of the boy is still

unclear and authorities did not release any information about the freed victim. The two victims were kidnapped on March 31 in Zamboanga del Sur’s Pitogo town along with another three-year old boy, Zynielle Garban, whose body was found floating at sea. The boy’s body had a bullet wound. The trio was seized by rebels after failing to kidnap a bakery owner in Pitogo town. Policemen also clashed with the kidnappers

as they escaped on a motorboat. The kidnaping came barely a week after armed men barged into the house of Naga town Mayor Gemma Adana and seized her. Provincial authorities have not released any information about the politician, but police and military previously tagged a breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Abu Sayyaf as behind the mayor’s kidnapping. NPA rebels bomb police station DAVAO CITY – Communist insurgents attacked a police station, detonating a bomb that also injured a civilian in their continuing offensive against security targets in southern Philippines. The army sent troops to help police forces pursue the attackers behind last week’s attack in Compostela Valley’s Mabini town late on Saturday, according to its spokesman, Captain Alberto Caber, of the Eastern Mindanao Command. Caber claimed that a

21-year old villager, Ravelyn Cobrado, suffered shrapnel wounds from the explosion that targeted the Mabini Police Station. “Ravelyn was rushed to Davao Regional Hospital for treatment by responding civilians and security forces in the area,” he said. He said soldiers from the 71st Infantry Battalion and local policemen were sent to pursue the rebels, who are members of the separatist group New People’s Army. Caber said at least 10 civilians were killed and

wounded in separate rebel bombings in the provinces of North Cotabato and Surigao del Sur, and that they had recovered 5 dozen improvised explosives and landmines planted by rebels in the restive region. He accused the NPA of violating a ban on the use of landmines, but rebel leaders said all the explosives were command-detonated. The NPA has been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a Maoist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)

Cinema Rehiyon comes to Cebu

EBUANO classic films and other regional films will be showcased in a four-day event dubbed ‘Cinema Rehiyon 7’ from August 6 to 9 in Cebu City to promote the diversity of Philippine culture from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. With the theme “At the Crossroads of the Seventh Art,” the event will feature the best regional films from across the archipelago including the unique characteristics of Cebuano films. Teddy Co, of the National Committee on Cinema, of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, said Cinema Rehiyon7 pays homage to the local film culture highlighting the different facets of Filipino life from different regions. He said the opening day of Cinema Rehiyon7 is set on August 6 at the SM Cinema with simultaneous film screenings at SM Cinemas and at his-

toric Oriente 1 and 2 in Colon, being the first theater in Cebu. He said admission is free. Co said there used to be a Cebuano film industry from 1937 to 1976. “The Cebuano film industry was not sustained because film making before is very expensive and there are scarcity of producers,” he said. But Cebu is a home base of many creative film makers and rich talents citing popular actresses Gloria Sevilla and Pilar Pilapil, said Co, adding that the University of San Carlos is the second school nationwide to offer Cinema TV Program. Actor Archi Adamos, who is an executive committee member of the NCC, said with the advent of digital technology and film making today is made much easier and not costly. “Just by using your phone, you can make short films already,” he said. Adamos, however, ad-

mitted that venues for regional films are limited to television, during festivals and documentaries shown in schools as accessing it to commercial cinemas is quite difficult. Cinema Rehiyon 7 Festival Director Bambi Beltran expressed optimism that the newlycreated Cebu Cinema Development Council of Cebu City can inspire neophyte film makers to create new ideas for films showcasing Cebuano culture. Beltran appealed to Cebuanos to patronize Cinema Rehiyon7 as public support is critical to sustain the event. “We are targeting 15,000 cinema viewers and we hope that we could exceed that number,” said Beltran. CinemaRehiyon 7 is a flagship project of the NCC which will showcase 18 full-length films and 54 short films. (Fayette C. Riñen)
