Kusug Tausug, Jaycees hold leadership training, workshop SULU – The Junior Chamber InternationalJolo Jaycees and Kusug Tausug have recently conducted a leadership training and workshop for young people in Sulu province in southern Philippines. Shernee Tan, president of the Kusug Tausug, also thanked Jaycees for advocating nation-building and for continuously providing opportunities for young people to develop their leadership skills, social responsibility and fellowship necessary to create positive change – “just as what the mission of organization says.” The two-day workshop held recently in Jolo town was attended by Jaycees
officials and members and students and their leaders from different schools in Sulu, including representatives of different sectors in the province led by Mayor Hussin Amin, among others. In her speech, Tan said in its history, the Jaycees set their eyes on a mission towards harnessing the energy and potentialities especially of the young sector of their movement in leaving a mark in nation-building efforts. She said just like the Kusug Tausug which for many years work on the same principle has now evolved from an inspiration towards a movement. “As Kusug Tausug’s first President, I do admit
that I harbour a bit of apprehension and a lot of sleepless nights for the heavy burden of responsibilities placed on my young and fragile shoulders, and of course the dreadful thought of failure and making a mess out of a noble cause always enter my thoughts.” “Despite the selfdoubts, I was egged on by the fact that the Tausug youths of today are coming out from their individual shells to be noted as a viable and potent stakeholder of everything we are exerting efforts for in the present context. They are indeed the rightful inheritors of the future,” Tan said. Continue on page 5

DENR-ARMM to plant 1 million trees in Maguindanao MAGUINDANAO - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DENRARMM) will plant one million trees in the province of Maguindanao this year. Kahal Kedtag, DENRARMM Secretary, said the objective of this project is to reduce the effects of climate change in the region, starting with Maguindanao. “Ang ginagawa natin dito ay ang pagsulong at pagtulong sa climate change mitigation (Our objective is to help in climate change mitigation),” Sec. Kedtag underscored. The seedlings available for the project, he said, can reforest up to 50,000 hectares of land. The reforestation is in line with the National Greening Program. The watersheds in Dimapatoy, South Upi and Kabulnan – all in the province of Maguindanao – are the priority areas to be planted with the seedlings. The region – composed of the mainland provinces of Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi – has a total of 585,000 hectares of forest land. ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman has implemented a total log ban in the region through Executive Order 001 issued in December 2011. The order prohibits the cutting of trees in the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
ARMM now has 301,000 hectares of forest cover, an increase of 6.7% compared with the 282,640 hectares in 2003 after a “precise geomapping, tagging and monitoring.” The regional Environment department has commissioned the local community, mostly of Teduray ethnicity, in Datu Odin Sinsuat town to raise the seedlings at the department’s central nursery at Sitio Lomboy, Brgy. Awang. More than 400 residents, joined in the bagging of the seedlings, and availed themselves of jobs under the cash-for-work program of DENR-ARMM. Over 200 of the participants are members of the LoPaSiNaKa (Sitio Lomboy, Pagapulan, Siawan and Nabilan) People’s Organization. One of the beneficiaries is 24-year old Regie Agustin who has a child and needs to make both ends meet since he earns only P100 a day as a driver of ‘habal-habal’, a motorcycle that ferries passengers to remote villages. “Dati akong habalhabal driver, P100 lang kinikita ko sa isang araw at nahihirapang tustusan ang gastusin sa bahay. Ngayon kahit papano nakatutulong na ako sa panggastos sa bahay (I used to be a ‘habalhabal’ driver earning P100 daily, which is not enough to support the needs of my family. At least, I now contribute more to the family’s expenses),” said
Agustin who now earns as much as P500 a day from bagging seedlings. “ N o o n g nakapagtrabaho ako dito sa LoPaSiNaKa, nagkakapera po ako ng sapat. Kontra nung driver ako ng habalhabal, tama lang po ang aking kinikita. Minsan may naiuuwi sa pamilya, minsan wala, tama lang sa gasoline (When I started working with LoPaSiNaKa, I was able to earn enough. When I was a ‘habal-habal’ driver, there were days my earnings would only be enough to buy gasoline, no money to bring home to my family).” “Nagpapasalamat nga po ako kay Sec. Kedtag dahil yung project na ito ay dito niya inilunssad sa aming lugar. Nakatulong yung trabaho hindi lang sa akin kundi sa aming mga tagaLomboy (I want to thank Sec. Kedtag for launching this project here. It is a big help not only for me but for other residents of Lomboy as well),” Agustin added. Mahogany, molave, narra, and coffee, among others, are raised in the halfhectare nursery in Lomboy. Lauriano Saldino, 61, president of the association, said the community is thankful of the opportunity. “Kapag maitanim na po ito sa amin, kami naman po ang poprotekta dito, at aalagaan hanggang sa paglaki (We would take care of these seedlings and we would protect these until they grow into trees).” (Bureau of Public Information)

ARMM registers P471-M investment in Tawi-Tawi energy project
-
TAWI-TAWI The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) continues to attract investments, as Southsea Industr ial Energy Corp. registered its P471-million worth of mini-oil refinery. The project, which includes storage depots in Tubig-Indangan, and Simunul in Tawi-Tawi, was approved during the last joint board and management committee meeting of the ARMM’s Regional Board of Investment (RBOI) on December 2. Southsea, a 100% Filipino-owned company, will put up the first of its kind mini oilrefinery in the country using new technology from South Korea with the assistance of a South Korean technical partner. RBOI provisionally approved the project pending the release of an endorsement of the project by the Department of Energy, which is expected to be issued by the end of the month. The commercial operation of the mini oilrefinery would start in the last quarter of 2017 and would generate at least 100 jobs. ARMM Regional Gover nor Mujiv S. Hataman reiterated that with the registration of
Southsea, private sector investments in the ARMM reached a total of P6.5 billion this year. This figure is the highest recorded in the 26-year history of the region. Lawyer Ishak Mastura, RBOI-ARMM chairman, said despite the uncertainty of the passage of the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law in the Senate and the House of Representatives, investments in the region have been going up. “ There were fears raised (related to the proposed Basic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, or BLBAR,) by investors in the ARMM, expressed through the Promotion of I n v e s t m e n t S u s t a i n a b i l i t y Organization (PISO),” said Atty. Mastura. He added that some investors think the revied draft basic law for the Bangsamoro could make the region less autonomous. Edgar Bullecer, PISO lead convener and part of the growing banana export industry in the ARMM, said if BLBAR is passed, investors will be discouraged as investment rules will be changed, and will revert back to the central government.
Currently, investors in the ARMM enjoy ease of doing business like issuance of permits and approvals of projects, among others, under the ARMM Organic Act. The BLBAR version, specifically the draft from the House of Representatives, will also take away ‘vested rights’ already being enjoyed by investors in the ARMM, such as fiscal and nonfiscal incentives issued by the RBOI. This year, the RBOI has recorded an increase of roughly 68% in the total value of investments, or P6.5 billion this year compared with last year’s P3.87 billion. Moreover, a total of 4,894 jobs, which is about 43% higher compared with last year’s 3,433 jobs, have been recorded this year. This means that even with the delay in the passage of a Bangamoro law faithful to the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), the peace process will continue to bring stability to the region since both the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front are committed to the full implementation of the CAB, Gov. Hataman added. (Bureau of Public Information)

Kusug Tausug, Jaycees hold leadership training, workshop Continued fr om page 1 from She said as a people, the Tausug have a glorious past and a colourful history which left an undeniable and indelible mark in this part of the world. “We were once sovereign. My father – Vice Governor Sakur Tan - on many occasions said there
is a lingering romance between our people and the past. And to consummate that romance, we should build a bridge between the past and the future if only to show to the people who look down and frown on us that we, too, can stand shoulder to shoulder with
anyone in national endeavors as we are Filipinos too,” the young leader said. “The Kusug Tausug will take the cudgel to be the bridge of hope founded and pillared by the honor and dignity our ancestors have fought and died for. We are not fomenting a
rebellious movement or a reversion to a former order of things. What we hope to achieve in this humble movement is the reinvention of the Tausug– a new Tausug shaped by the struggle of their forebears and the awareness of the fact that we have to institute
changes from deep within us that we may shred off the skin of a typecast that seems to have chained us to the ground unable to take the stride towards a better future.” The current membership of Jaycees in the Philippines – from age 18 to 40 – is now 3,500,
excluding active associates of past members numbering more than 6,000 and an auxiliary group of Junior Jaycees, numbering over 3,000 members operating in more than 300 communities across the Philippines. (Ahl-franzie Salinas)

Sulu Provincial Women’s Council holds forum on HIV-AIDS THE SULU Provincial Women’s Council (SPWC) recently held a forum on h u m a n immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome attended by scores of students from various schools, colleges and universities in Sulu. Philanthropist and professional nurse Hajja Nurunisah Tan, who is the chairwoman of the SPWC, organized the forum held at the Women and Children Center in the capital town of Jolo. The forum coincided
with the celebration of World Aid Day. Among those who participated and spoke at the forum were Tuan Yayah Titong, president of Muslim Leaders Assembly and Dr. Faranazh Intimani, municipal health officer, among others. Titong spoke about the Islamic Values and Perspective, and Intimani discussed about HIV-AIDS. Following initial infection, a person may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness. This is typically followed
by a prolonged period without symptoms. As the infection progresses, it interferes more and more with the immune system, making the person much more susceptible to common infections, like tuberculosis, as well as opportunistic infections and tumors that do not usually affect people who have working immune systems. The late symptoms of the infection are referred to as AIDS. This stage is often complicated by an
infection of the lung known as pneumocystis pneumonia, severe weight loss, skin lesions caused by Kaposi's sarcoma, or other AIDSdefining conditions. HIV is transmitted primarily via unprotected sexual intercourse, including anal and oral sex, contaminated blood t r a n s f u s i o n s , hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, deliver y, or breastfeeding. Some bodily fluids, such as
saliva and tears, do not transmit HIV. Common methods of HIV-AIDS prevention include encouraging and practicing safe sex, needle-exchange programs, and treating those who are infected. There is no cure or vaccine; however, antiretroviral treatment can slow the course of the disease and may lead to a near-nor mal life expectancy. While antiretroviral treatment reduces the risk of death and complications from the
disease, these medications are expensive and have side effects. Treatment is recommended as soon as the diagnosis is made. Without treatment, the average sur vival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV subtype. Those who attended the for um praised the SPWC and Tan for her initiative in holding the assembly and explaining issues about HIV-AIDS. (Ahl-franzie Salinas)
Donald Trump calls for halt on Muslims entering the US

REPUBLICAN presidential front-runner Donald Trump has called for a "total and complete" block on Muslims entering the United States. A statement from Trump's campaign team said the halt on Muslims entering the country should remain in place "until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on." The statement does not specify if the proposal would affect both tourists and immigrants. Trump's campaign cites poll data allegedly showing "hatred towards Americans by large segments of the Muslim population". "Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine," the billionaire real estate mogul, who is leading in opinion polls among likely Republican voters, said in the statement. "Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life." Trump has been increasingly virulent in his remarks targeting Muslim Americans since the deadly Paris attacks, and again in the wake of last week's shooting attack in California, which was carried out by a Muslim couple, leaving 14 dead and
21 wounded. "Just put out a very important policy statement on the extraordinary influx of hatred & danger coming into our country. We must be vigilant!" Trump tweeted after the statement was released. His announcement unleashed quick condemnation on Twitter.
"@realdonaldtrump removes all doubt: he is running for President as a fascist demagogue," Democratic presidential contender Martin O'Malley said. The Council on American-Islamic Relations group said: "We're entering into the realm of the fascist now." (Al Jazeera)

TECH TIPS: Here's how to get free Wi-Fi anywhere HEALTH: Masakit ang Likod at Balakang:Heto ang Gagawin WI-FI HAS pretty much genius to know that address of your device,
become a basic human right. When a friend doesn't have a Wi-Fi connection at his house we tend to visit less, when our Wi-Fi drops at home we're outraged, and we cer tainly wouldn't stop for a coffee at a cafe that doesn't have Wi-Fi. But you know what's even better than Wi-Fi? Free Wi-Fi. Here's how to get free Wi-Fi wherever you go. Ask a fr iendly str anger friendly stranger The number of times I've had a fr iendly stranger simply give me a Wi-Fi password, whether they're using Wi-Fi at a cafe or they work at one, is incredible. Considering many places like you to pay for Wi-Fi, people seem to be pretty free-and-easy with the passwords. Other times they're written on a chalkboard or on a piece of paper at the till, so use your eyes, put on a big smile and charm your way to free Wi-Fi. Pool rresour esour ces with esources WeF eFii WeFi is a great app that automatically connects you to any free Wi-Fi in your area, based on the combined resources of millions of users just like you, who know that where there's numbers, there's strength. With over seven million downloads and hundreds of millions of hotspots, WeFi is sure to have coverage right where you are. Use yyour our scanner Your Android will already tell you if a Wi-Fi connection is secured or not. And thankfully not ever yone is as savvy about protecting their internet connection as you are about borrowing it. Just go to Settings > Wi-Fi and look for connections that are labeled 'open' or 'unsecured' and connect. G o to S tarbucks or Starbucks McDonalds It doesn't take a
certain major chains use free Wi-Fi as a carrot to entice customers in. Just as the free restrooms at McDonalds cause plenty of people to swing by in times of need and stick around for some fries, so too does free Wi-Fi. It almost makes up for paying six bucks for a Starbucks coffee. Join a community Instabridge is a great little app where crowdsourced Wi-Fi connections and passwords are compiled into a network of millions. The best thing is that it also includes secured connections, so as long as one person paid for that overpriced latte, everyone with the app can enjoy the connection. Pay attention at the mall Every time I head to an Android event I invariably have SIM cards, data plans and calling cards thrust into my palm. Often, one of those many freebies is a Wi-Fi card that allows you an hour or two of free Wi-Fi access to a big mobile or internet provider. The same things are regularly handed out as promotional items at malls and shopping centres, so keep your eyes peeled. Swing b y a hotel by This one feels a little cheeky, but the front desk staff at many hotels have no idea whether you are staying at their establishment or not, so if you casually stroll up and ask for the Wi-Fi passwords, more often than not they will happily hand you a slip of paper and you're on your way. Just cross your fingers that they don't ask for your room card. Spoof yyour our MA C MAC addr ess address Because timed free Wi-Fi connections are simply based on the MAC
it's not terribly difficult to spoof that address and score some more free minutes. This one is a little more involved than some others, but if you know how to do it it's a great technique to have in your free Wi-Fi toolkit. Hit the libr ar y librar ary If you live near a library or take your lunch near one, you can always pick up free Wi-Fi for a limited time at the good old book depositor y. Again, you may need to stroll in and grab a slip of paper, but sometimes the Wi-Fi password is written up on the wall for all to see and use. Use yyour our fr iends friends Even if you're too cheap to pay for a bigger data plan, your friends might not be. You can often tether your phone to a friend's device for long enough to check your WhatsApp or send an email. Just don't go watching Vines for half an hour or you might find yourself with one less friend in the world. Check yyour our cable subscr iption subscription Some of the big cable networks also provide Wi-Fi access a freebie in their subscription deals. Take a look at your fine print or call customer service to find out if you have any data access included in your subscription. This is not technically free, but if you never knew you had access to hotspots across the city, it's the next best thing. Giv e and take ive Rather than endlessly sucking up other people's Wi-Fi connections, you can take a slightly more give and take approach and share your Wi-Fi hotspot (at home or work, for example) in exchange for other people's. Simply share your details, log in and be prepared to return the favor when you have Wi-Fi access of your own. (Kris Carlon, AndroidPIT)

Good luck po.

Tie the ham tightly into a ball with string (I use cotton crochet string). Remove/ Drain the meat juices that were left in the glass bowl and set aside for injecting. 4. Using a huge syringe (you can buy the largest syringe at Mercury drugstore for less than 20 pesos), inject the flavored meat juice all around the ham in small doses. 5. Set the ham aside in the glass bowl (covered) inside the refrigerator. Repeat the injecting process every day until no juices remain. 6. Keep the ham inside a plastic bag in the freezer for a month or more.
‘In defense of Honor and Dignity’
To cook the ham: 1. Add enough pineapple juice to cover the ham at about 3/4’s level (not quite to the top of the ham). 2. Add the following: brown sugar ( just enough to sweeten the pineapple juice mixture), bay leaves, crushed garlic. 3. Cook the mixture in a heavy, teflon-type pot over a low fire until the meat becomes tender. Watch out that the meat doesn’t get burned. You can prevent over-browning by turning the meat from time to time. 4. Cool the meat and slice into pieces. (http://www.kusinamaster.asia)

Central Bank says consumers should read peso bills to avoid confusion over colors OVER THE mounting complaints of the hard to distinguish colors of the new generation currency (NGC) which the Central Bank is circulating as legal tender, a key official of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said it is high time that people should read and not just look. In 2010, BSP started replacing the new design series (NDS) of banknotes which started circulation in 1985. As BSP is slowly demonetizing the 30-year old NDS, the NGC replaces it as legal tender, explained BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo. But with the new development, the Central Bank has received complaints about the hard to distinguish colors that
are now being used. Some of the complaints have been over the P500 bill, which share the similar yellow shade as the P20 bill. Both can be easily mistaken for the other, similar to the P1,000 and P100 bills. But Guinigundo downplayed the issue saying “there is an extra zero in P1,000.” “The solution is that society should read, we need to teach our people to read and not just look at the colors," Guinigundo said. Pressing for proof on his claims, Guinigundo pointed out that dollar economies only have green banknotes, and still they do not have problems. “We have simply added the colors of the banknotes to help people determine the
money,” he said. Among the new colors are bright orange (P20), bright red (P50), purple (P100), bright green (P200), bright yellow (P500) and bright blue P1000. The older NDS become unacceptable as legal tender for daily transactions starting January 1, 2016. On this date, only the NGC would be used for daily transactions. Failing to do that, holders of old banknotes would have to exchange these in the banks, as these financial institutions are still mandated to accept the notes for exchange until the end of 2016, according to Guinigundo. (Rey Anthony H. Chiu)
