Hype won’t solve ‘Badjao Girl’ problems, says youth groups MANILA – Filipino youth groups have expressed concern over the growing hype surrounding rising internet sensations from marginalized sectors in society, particularly Rita Gabiola, popularly known as “Badjao Girl.” Viral photos of Gabiola, taken while she
was begging for alms in the streets of Lucban in Quezon province, have propelled the young girl into popularity. Since then, several personalities and institutions have rushed to shower her and her family with donations and other forms of aid. But the Samahan ng
Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK), a national organization of students which engages issues of exploitation and massive inequality in the country, noted several issues surrounding Gabiola’s rise to popularity. Continue on page 2

prosecutor said he would hold office in Davao and would start working at 1 p.m. until 12 midnight. The two officials will officially hold office on June 30. Continue on page 2

MARAWI CITY – Sporadic clashes between security forces and jihadists continue in Lanao del Sur, one of 5 provinces under the troubled Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines. Various sources said at least 2 jihadists were killed in the clashes which erupted last week, but still continuing in the town of Butig where military forces were trying to flush out the group of Abdullah Maute which is fighting for Islamic caliphate in the volatile region. Maute, leader of the so-called Islamic State Ranao, is said to be coddling Indonesian and Malaysian militants in the province. Military propaganda claimed that more than

50 jihadists were killed in the battle, but troops had not recovered the bodies of those slain in the fighting. The reports cited raw intelligence from villagers. At least 2 soldiers were also killed and about 10 others wounded in the clashes that started late last month. Ground troops were being supported by artillery fire and aerial bombardments by aging OV-10 aircrafts from the air force. The governor of Lanao del Sur, Bombit Adiong, has not issued any statement on the fighting, but the regional government has began relief operations in many villages where civilians had evacuated for fear of being caught in the crossfire or mistaken for

members or supporters of the jihadist group. Just this year, jihadists beheaded two brothers – Salvador and Makol Hanobas – who were accused by Maute’s group as government spies. There were among 6 sawmill operators seized by gunmen on April in the province. The others – Julieto Hanobas, Alfredo Anoos, Gabriel Permites and Adones Mendez – were freed unharmed following negotiations by their Muslim employer. Members of the jihadist group Ansarul Khilafah also captured and decapitated another man in Sarangani province after being accused as a police spy. (With a report from Mohd Saaduddin)

Hype won’t solve ‘Badjao Girl’ problems, says youth groups Continued fr om page 1 from “Members of the Badjao community, like many other indigenous groups in the country, currently face issues of displacement, exploitation and alienation from their very own cultural heritage because of the growing inequalities, violence in their ancestral lands and the destruction of their native environment and livelihood,” SPARK National Coordinator Arvin Buenaagua told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. He said as of last year, data has placed the population of the Badjao community at 26, 400 scattered across Eastern Visayas, Northern Samar, San Bernardino Strait, Capul Island, San Isidro Island and Manila. He said while the Badjaos are traditionally a seafaring tribe, some families have settled in impoverished coastal sections of highlyurbanized areas due to poverty and displacement. Alex Castro, of Nagkakaisang Iskolar Para Sa Pamantasan at Sambayanan (KAISA UP), agreed with Buenaagua and said: “This leaves open the possibility of members of the tribe, especially children and women, to be subject to exploitation and harassment, not to mention the
detachment of younger generations to their wellestablished traditions and culture. The surrounding hype implies that most people only notice indigenous people when they are photo shoot-material and thus sellable.” Castro stressed that “romanticizing” the plight of Gabiola and her family will do very little difference to the quality of life experienced by indigenous tribes. “Since the passage of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act in 1997, no successful attempt has been initiated to address the issue of poverty and exploitation among these nomadic tribes. Not to mention the disenfranchisement of these groups in policies addressing armed violence and environmental destruction in rural and coastal areas of the country,” she said. Castro also noted that while civil society and individual citizens’ efforts to help the family of Gabiola are admirable, the government must recognize the societal realities that put Gabiola’s family into such dismal conditions. She said that education in all levels remain inaccessible to most indigenous people, with its high cost and discriminatory policies. “Gabiola’s desire for a quality education is reflective of the desire espoused
by all citizens, especially those who see it as a tool for social mobility and selfrealization. We cannot simply address this issue by giving out token scholarships, but by providing free education for all citizens, regardless of where they came from and which group they belong to,” she said. Both Castro and Buenaagua urged the Aquino government in its last few weeks and the incoming Duterte administration to take drastic and immediate action to uplift and secure the lives and livelihoods. “President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, as the first President to hail from Mindanao, must be very familiar with the poverty and violence the indigenous people have to face daily and therefore should prioritize the integration of their issues in the country’s policies on development and peace. This entails a departure from the neoliberal policies espoused by the Aquino government, which Duterte also professed to adopt, putting business interests ahead of the urgent demands of the people and resulting to massive displacement, loss of livelihood and the concentration of wealth to a privileged few,” Buenaagua said. Ampatuan clan harassed in own hometown COTABATO CITY – The clan of political lord Ampatuan has accused its opponent as behind a recent grenade attack that injuted 2 people in Maguindanao province in the volatile Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines. Police confirmed the attack which occured last week at the sprawling compound of the Ampatuan mansion in Shar iff Aguak town. It was unknown why the
police and military failed to prevent the assault despite the presence of security forces in the town. The mansion was owned by former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr, the clan’s patriarch who was a staunched political rival of Esmael Mangudadatu, the current governor. Ampatuan - accused as behind the murder of dozens of people, includ-
ing Mangudadatu’s wife and sister, and journalists in 2009 in Maguindanao, died in July 2015 from kidney failure. Despite being imprisoned, many villagers in Maguindanao remain loyal to Ampatuan and his clan. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack and police said it is still investigating the blast. (Mindanao Examiner)
Sabah Is Ours!
Continued fr om page 1 from Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman also stated his stand that the state would remain part of Malaysia and had never recognised any claim by the Philippines on the issue. The report further quoted Najib as saying that Malaysia is committed towards defending Sa¬¬bah from any threat and urged its citizens to be the eyes and ears of the security forces against anything that might emerge internally.
Last year, Manila offered to downgrade its claim on Sabah in exchange for Malaysia’s support in its case before the United Nations against China’s claims over scattered islands near the Philippines. The Philippines is claiming that Sabah or North Borneo originally belonged to the Sultan of Brunei, who gave it to Sultan of Sulu Salah ud-Din Karamat Bakhtiar in 1658 as a reward for helping quell a
rebellion. In 1878, Sulu Sultan Jamalul Alam Kiram leased North Borneo to the Hong Kong-based British North Borneo Company of Baron Gustavos von Overbeck and Alfred Dent for “5,000 Malaysian dollars” a year. Even after North Borneo became part of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur still pays an annual rent of at least 5,000 ringgit to the heirs of the recognized Sultan of Sulu Ismail Kiram. (Mindanao Examiner)

ARMM vows support for Duterte, Robredo Continued fr om page 1 from Mujiv Hataman, the governor of the Muslim autonomous region, who campaigned for Duterte’s closest rival Mar Roxas and his running mate Robredo, congratulated the duo. “Today, we turn another page in our history as we welcome those who will be at the forefront in leading our country for the next six years. We would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to our President-elect, Rodrigo Duterte, and our Vice President-Elect, Leni Robredo. Both of them have proven their mettle in empowering the oppressed and marginalized sectors of society, and both of them have made it a priority to empower the people in their years of public service,” Hataman, a member of the Liberal Party, said. He said Duterte and Robredo have won the trust of the Bangsamoro people
and with a solid track record as local officials, both of them represent an administration that will find its strength in participatory governance and empowered local government units. Hataman said: “Their win, therefore, bears greater significance when placed beside our collective effort towards a national government where regions like the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) can expect their peoples' voices to be heard and where the concerns of those in the regions are part and parcel of the national agenda.” “Here in the ARMM, we have done much in more than seventeen years of working together towards peace, and the next six years bring much promise. Upon taking the helm of the national government, we hope that the commitment of both our president-elect and vice president-elect
have expressed during the campaign with regard to the peace process will bear fruit. May their leadership translate to further acknowledging the historical injustices committed against the people of Mindanao, to empowering those whose histories are yet to find a place in the national narrative, and to recognizing the rights of the people, including the right to self-determination,” he added. Hataman, who was also re-elected, said: “We share in their victory, and we find hope in the leadership that President-elect Duterte and Vice President-elect Robredo will bring to the table. Together, we look forward to bringing this country closer to a future where lasting peace and genuine justice for all is not just an aspiration but a way of life.” (Mindanao Examiner)

“Just because you’re a journalist you are not exempted from assassination, if you’re a son of a bitch. Freedom of expression cannot help you if you have done something wrong,” ani Duterte. “Last night’s statements also came as a shock to us.Our family is incensed by the hasty and crass generalizations made about murdered journalists in the country. Doc Gerry Ortega was killed for his courage and integrity.” “He was murdered precisely because he was honorable. He fought for social justice. He stood up against mining in Palawan. He exposed corruption in the provincial government, which included the misuse of billions of pesos from the Malampaya funds. This kind of speech is alarming because without due process, it casts absolute judgment on all murdered journalists including those who were killed for telling the truth,” ani Michaella. Ikinadismaya rin ng National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) at ng National Press Club of the Philippines (NPCP) ang pahayag ni Duterte. “It is appalling that President-elect Rodrigo Duterte should justify the murder of journalists in the country by playing the corruption card. Mr. Duterte’s crass pronouncement not only sullies the names and memories of all 176 of our colleagues who have been murdered since 1986, he has also, in effect, declared open season to silence the media, both individual journalists and the institution, on the mere perception of corruption.”
“The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines does not gloss over the fact that corruption is among the most pressing problems faced by the media. Nor do we deny that this could be the reason for a number of media killings. However, it is one thing to recognize a possible reason for murder; it is a totally different thing to present this as a justification for taking life,” dagdag pa ng media watchdog. Sinabi rin ng NPCP na ang pahayag ni Duterte ay “too sweeping, generalized and therefore unfair to the victims in particular like Doc Gerry Ortega, Ampatuan massacre victims and to the entire profession in general.” “While we acknowledge that there are also rotten members of the press similar to other professions like in the police and most especially among politicians, to simplify media killing as due to corruption in d press is to gloss over the fact that media killings happen due to the still prevalent culture of impunity.” “Wala pang nabibigyan ng katarungan sa mga napaslang na kasapi ng media particular sa nakaraang 6 taon. Kaya mas malalakas ang loob ng mga nagbabalak ng karahasan laban sa media. This branding of the media would only justify more attacks against them,” wika ng NPCP. “The expected headlines aside from the new cabinet members would have been the declaration of war against red tape and the unnecessary burden and fees imposed on hapless citizens. Yet, national and international media lapped up on the issue of media killings. Again and as usual Rody Duterte was taken out of context, misinterpreted and misunderstood,” ani Lavina. “For instance, his example of most slain journalists as being corrupt or involved in shady deals was based on his own assessment of those killed in Davao City and not on the national scale. Certainly, Duterte has no personal knowledge on each and every single case of media killings in many parts of the country. During the election campaign, Duterte has stated he would create a Task Force to address media killings and ask for a spe-
cial prosecutor to focus on these cases. I repeated the same stand when I joined members of the National Press Club (NPC) visit the wake of the most recent victim of media killing, Alex Balcoba, last Monday night.” Idinagdag pa nitong: “When Duterte said last night that journalists become vulnerable to killings, it was because they were no longer seen as fair and neutral members of the media but because they have become partisan propagandists, deliberately using their media outlets in attacking or defending one party or another and collecting pay offs on both. In the context of Duterte’s campaign against corruption, his remarks indeed should be seen to mean a reminder or a message that there are also corruption in mass media. And he has seen this during the recent election when headlines, for instance, were being bumped off to give way to paid black propaganda masquerading as news items. Hence, he said you really want the truth? well that’s the truth.” There is no way to know that the next victim would be a journalist. Yung mga expose or bad words against us, wala yan. Ako I’ve been mayor… Pero karamihan niyan may, alam mo na, nabigyan na especially if you want to take sides. Nabayaran mo na tapos you play. You really want the truth, yun ang truth.” “There is still corruption sa inyong side. Marami yan. Ayun, that is the best example of bakit namamatay itong mga journalists. Ang prangkaprangka. Karamihan ganun. Kasi kung journalist ka lang na tao, walang gagalaw sa iyo especially if it is the truth but you cannot hide the truth. I do not diminish his memory, but he was a rotten son of a bitch.” (Mindanao Examiner)

DOH-ARMM issues health advice on dengue and water-borne diseases COTABATO CITY – The Department of Health of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DOH-ARMM) has advised residents in the region to take precautionary measures against dengue and water-borne diseases now that the wet season has officially started. Christine Joy Capin, DOH-ARMM assistant program coordinator for dengue prevention and control and food and water-borne diseases, said the region normally sees a rise in the number of dengue cases during the rainy season and they are taking steps to reduce the number of infection this year. “Residents should observe different measures to combat the spread of the disease. Some of the things they
should do includes drying stagnant waters in the house, cleaning their roof gutters, immediately seek medical assistance when fever lasts for at least two days, and using insect repellants and wearing long sleeve shirts,” Capin said. She said the DOHARMM is currently conducting an extensive information drive in schools and communities in the region to help minimize the number of dengue cases. She said they are encouraging residents to observe the “4S” mechanisms in dengue prevention and control. The “4S” means: Search and destroy; Seek immediate action; Say no to indiscriminate fogging; and Self-protection mea-
sures. Dengue is an acute viral infection acquired from the bite of a female Aedes aegypti mosquito. This fatal disease usually affects infants and children in tropical and subtropical countries like the Philippines. Its signs and symptoms include fever which extends from 2-7 days, skin flushing, loss of appetite, vomiting, and in severe cases, nose bleeding and bleeding of gums. The DOH-ARMM has recorded 78 dengue cases with one fatality in the entire ARMM during the first quarter of this year. Capin said the number is significantly lower compared to the first quarter of 2015, where 487 cases with five fatalities were reported. They have recorded a total of
2,376 cases with 24 deaths across the region in the same year. Marawi City recorded the highest number of cases with 758 followed by Maguindanao province with 614 cases. Moreover, Capin also cautioned residents against common waterborne diseases like diarrhea, amoebiasis, hepatitis A, and cholera. She added that cold and cough are also very common during the rainy season. She said obser ving cleanliness and being vigilant help reduce the chance of contacting any of these diseases. “Obser ve proper hand washing before and after meals and also wash the fruits and vegetables you eat,” Capin said. TECH TIPS: How to transfer everything to your new phone GETTING a new smartphone should be exciting but it's usually accompanied by the dull process of transferring all your contacts, music, apps and data from your old one. Thanks to a host of useful backup tools for Android, though, that no longer has to be the case. We'll show you how to transfer everything to your new device, whether you're upgrading from an Android or an iPhone. How to tr ansfer contacts transfer Despite all the amazing features smartphones have these days, they are still primarily a method of communication, so your contacts are probably pretty important to you. Luckily the days of having to write them all down and manually enter them in the new phone are long gone. Here are the alternatives. Transferring your contacts: Synchronize Google Account This is probably the simplest method of them all. If you've previously saved your contacts to your Google account you can just log into it and pick them up on your new smartphone. Just go Settings > Account > Google and toggle the Contacts Sync switch to on. If you have multiple Google accounts you can pick the one you use the most or merge them all. Synchronizing any data with your Google account is one of the best long-term strategies for backup and transfer because it's unlikely to become obsolete any time soon (Google is probably going to stick around for a few more years), it's secure and Google's products and services are available on most platforms – no matter what you're switching to. Transferring your contacts: Via SD card If both your old and new phone have SD card slots, you can transfer contacts using a microSD card. Just open the contacts section of your old phone and hit the import/export button. Then select export to storage or something along those lines. Next, pop the SD card in the new phone, go to the address book and find import on the menu and follow the instructions from there. The only problem with this technique is the potential for duplicate contacts, especially if you've already synced from Google. Transferring your contacts: Via internal storage This method is almost the same as above, except instead of selecting microSD card as your export destination, you choose your internal memory. Following this, you must connect your device to a personal computer and find the exported .vfc file in /System on your handset (the exact directory location will be given to you when you create the file). Copy this file to an easy to find the location on your computer and then send it or transfer it to your new

device. Navigate once more to address book > import on your new phone and select internal storage. Find the .vfc file location and open it to import the contact list. Transferring your contacts: Via SIM card If you want to change phones but keep your SIM card, you could use the old fashioned method for keeping contacts – essentially copying all the relevant contacts to the SIM and carrying them over. The advantage of this is you can manually select which ones to take with you (and have a bit of a spring clean) but the downside is that most SIMs are limited to about 200 contacts. The other potential issues are that the option to export to SIM is not even provided after Android 5.0 Lollipop and you are also likely to create duplicates. Further, there's the potential that your new phone won't support the same size SIM card as your previous device – so this one's probably a last resort. Transferring your contacts: From iPhone to Android Unsurprisingly, data transfer between the great smartphone rivals is not always easy but, for contacts, at least, there's a fairly simple solution. On one of its support pages, Google has explained how to synchronize Gmail, Calendar and Contacts on iPhone and iPad. Once you have a Google account set up on your Apple device, it will appear in the Email, Contacts and Calendars field, found in Settings. You can then perform the steps listed in the Synchronize Google Accounts step above. Alternatively, you could let a third-party app do the work for you. Transferring your contacts: From Android to iPhone You may decide to leave Android in favor of iPhone: we won't judge you. In this case, there are plenty of options. In your iPhone settings menu, for example, you will find an entry for mail, contacts and calendar. Here, you can navigate to Accounts > Add account and you will find Google listed. If you have your Google account synchronized with your contacts already (find out how to do that at the top of the page) – and you select this option – after you sign in, all of your contacts will appear in your iPhone's address book soon after. Alternatively, Apple has its own Move to iOS app available to help you make the switch (found below), or you could make use of a third-party app to get the job done for you. Transferring your contacts: By manufacturer Many Android phone manufacturers offer their own solutions for transferring contacts from one phone to another. Keeping yyour our old texts If you are still attached to their old text messages,
the best way to move them onto your new phone is by downloading SMS Backup and Restore, a free app that does exactly what you'd expect it to. Messages are stored in XML format and can then be sent to your new smartphone over Bluetooth, by email or saved then downloaded from the cloud. You'll need to install the app on your new phone in order to pick your messages up. This is a solution that works on all Android phones, but some individual manufacturer solutions (such as Motorola Migrate) bring messages over as a matter of course, so check whether yours does before you use this option. Keeping WhatsA pp chats WhatsApp One of best ways to keep all the pictures, videos and texts that were contained in your old WhatsApp is through a third party app. We have a tutorial on how to transfer WhatsApp conversions to a new device at the link. Following a recent WhatsApp update, you can also now back WhatsApp chats up to Google Drive. Transferr ing photos ansferring The easiest solution for transferring photos is to automatically back up your photos to the cloud. Apps such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Google+ offer a u t o - s y n c h ro n i z a t i o n when your device is attached to a Wi-Fi network so you can access your photos from anywhere. Alternatively, you can transfer individual images or albums from phone to phone via Bluetooth. But if you have a large number of photos or very high res images, this will take a long time. If both devices have an SD card slot, SD card transfer might be easier. You can also use a PC. Just connect the phone to the PC with a USB lead, copy the images folder (or whatever photos you want) onto the desktop and the reverse the process for the new phone. To transfer photos and videos from Android to iPhone, Apple recommends using Copy My Data, which, when installed, will give you a step-by-step guide. Transferr ing apps and ansferring their data Assuming you log in to your new phone with your Google account, all the apps you've already downloaded should appear automatically – although in Android 5.0 Lollipop you'll be asked which ones you want to keep. Unfortunately, there isn't currently a way to do this from Android to Apple so you'll have to re-download all your apps manually if you're moving to an iPhone and pay again for in the App Store rather than Play Store. Your phone should now be completely set up and feeling a little like your old one. Except faster and shinier and better-looking, of course. (Scott Adam Gordon, AndroidPIT)
10. Huwag magalinlangan magtanong sa doctor kung kinakailangan. Happy eating!
DepEd-ARMM kicks off ‘Brigada Eskwela’ MAGUINDANAO – The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) spearheaded a series of clean-up activities in different public elementary and high schools in the coastal areas of Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Maguindanao province to mark the start of the annual week-long school maintenance activity dubbed ‘Brigada Eskwela’. Education Sec. Dr. John Magno said that aside from the clean-up drive, this year’s ‘Brigada Eskwela’ also gives emphasis on school disaster-preparedness and readiness for the implementation of the K12 program. He said they want to make sure that schools in the ARMM are safe and conducive to education. The 2016 ‘Brigada Eskwela’ or National Schools Maintenance Week carries the theme “Tayo Para sa Paaralang Ligtas, Maayos, at Handa Mula Kindegarten Hanggang Senior High School” (All of us for safe and proper schools,
and ready from Kindergarten to Senior High School) and aims to unite communities in ensuring a better future for Filipino children. Magno said the region’s education officials and teachers are working with parents, barangay officials, students and other volunteers to clean and prepare schools in time for the opening of classes on June 13. “We are happy and grateful for the annual ‘Brigada Eswela’ and the support that we get from the DepEd-ARMM,” said Tukan Mangulamas, a supply officer at the second schools division of Maguindanao. The Australian Government-funded BEAM (Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao)-ARMM program has earmarked P8.9 million this year for minor repairs of classrooms in 225 public elementary and high schools as well as the provision of chairs and tables to 53 madaris (Islamic school). The BEAM-ARMM will
also provide curriculum guide, teacher’s guide and learning materials. “The DepEd-ARMM and BEAM have helped us improve our schools and encourage children to attend classes,” Evelyn Kanain, Senior High Coordinator of the Schools Division of Sulu. Kanain said the assistance from BEAM-ARMM will improve the quality of education in various schools not only in Sulu but in the entire region as well. Disaster preparedness activities will be integrated in the education program of public schools to better prepare students in the events of typhoons, floods and other natural calamities. Brigada Eskwela was started in 2003 and has three main objectives such as to practice shared governance; to bring the spirit of education to the community level and to utilize local resources to public schools. Filipinos warned vs fake UK job offers CEBU - Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz has warned job seekers wanting to work overseas, especially in the United Kingdom, to be wary of fake job vacancies posted in the Internet. This after the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration also warned applicants to be cautious of job vacancies posted in the Internet as advertisements enticing Filipino workers to apply for non-existent jobs in the United Kingdom are now circulating in the social media. “I advise jobseekers to be extra careful when looking for overseas job. Deal only with legitimate recruitment agencies and check with the POEA
ARMM
for proper guidance,” Baldoz said. According to the POEA, one Facebook account maintained by the scammer used the name of a Philippine licensed recruitment agency to solicit applicants for jobs as factory workers, drivers, gardeners, cleaners, caregivers, nannies and private nurses for UK. POEA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said the ads show signs of fraudulence and should be ignored by job seekers. Upon verification with the POEA’s database, however, the agency’s job orders from UK were only for nurses and mostly for National Health Services hospitals, Cacdac said. He aid that as a rule, given the strict migration policy of the United King-
dom, household jobs are not allowed to be recruited from non-European Economic Area countries. The Philippines is not part of the European Economic Area. “The Facebook advertisement is fraudulent because it promises overseas jobs through direct hiring, without placement fee, and a monthly salary as high as P200,000, which are too good to be true,” Cacdac said. Cacdac said Internetbased scammers have been using the name of legitimate employers and licensed agencies to attract unsuspecting victims. He advised applicants to always verify with the POEA the authenticity of published employment ads found in the social media.
