Communists demand release of all political prisoners or... DAVAO CITY – Communist rebel leaders have demanded the immediate release of more than 500 political prisoners in exchange for a longer truce with Manila. Last week, the government and Communist Party of the Philippines or CPP both issued a limited truce ahead of

the formal resumption of peace negotiations between the two sides in Oslo, Norway. Communist leaders said the unilateral declaration of ceasefire is to celebrate and bolster the resumption of peace talks which began on August 22 and ended on August 26.

It also coincided with the release from prison of two senior rebel leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, who joined the panel of CPP negotiators headed by its founder Jose Maria Sison, along with over a dozen other communist leaders also released from jail. Continue on page 2

Communists demand release of all political prisoners or... Continued fr om page 1 from Martin Andanar, a government spokesman, said: “The President has already walked an extra mile for peace. He is glad that the Communist Party of the Philippines, New people’s Army and National Democratic Front showed a similar gesture of goodwill as a sign of sincerity to the peace process days prior to our talks in Oslo, Norway.” “We therefore feel optimistic that the mutual efforts of both sides would lead to

fruitful negotiations that could pave the way for substantive discussions in the hope of putting an end to one of Asia’s longest-running insurgencies.” The communists said it will only lengthen the truce if Duterte frees all political prisoners. Rubi Del Mundo, a rebel spokesman, said the government should immediately release all the remaining 540 political prisoners languishing in various jails across the country.

Philippine government and communist peace panels during last week's negotiations in Oslo Norway in this photo released by the Office of the Presidential Peace Advisor on the Peace Process under Sec. Jesus Dureza.

“The NDFP expects the immediate release of the remaining 540 political prisoners in compliance of the Duterte government to the Comprehensive Agreement for Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law and the Joint Agreement for Security and Immunity Guarantees." "The success of the talks en route to a viable peace accord between the two governments in the Philippines rests in the main on GPH’s— especially the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police and their paramilitaries’— adherence to previous agreements and the serious deliberation of the roots of the civil war. In these objectives, the NDFP and the entire revolutionary movement have been and continue to be firmly resolute,” Del Mundo said. The rebels have been fighting for decades for the establishment of a separate Maoist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)

DUTERTE’S NARCO WAR

Continued fr om page 1 from Dela Rosa, who once served Duterte when he was mayor in Davao City, also vowed to continue the war against illegal drugs and criminals. Because of Duterte’s iron-fist policy in fighting the drug menace, tens of thousands of drug users and traffickers surrendered to the police, including mayors and judges he accused as being involved in illegal drug trades. Duterte also accused De Lima of taking bribes from drug lords, but she denied the allegations and said the president is destroying her reputation in an effort to derail her investigation into extrajudicial killings perpetrated by the police. Majority of the Filipinos are supporting Duterte’s war and the police forces in fighting illegal drugs. (Mindanao Examiner)

Military photo shows army soldiers posing with an ISIS flag in Basilan province in southern Philippines where security forces are battling the Abu Sayyaf.

Military battles Abu Sayyaf in Basilan province ISABELA CITY – Security forces continue nto battle Abu Sayyaf militants in Basilan, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region. Lasy week, at least 3 army soldiers and a militiaman were killed in fierce clashes with Abu Sayyaf militants. Officials said the fighting erupted in Tuburan town where security forces are chasing militants who pledged allegiance with the Islamic State. One civilian was also wounded after being hit by stray bullets during the fighting. No other details of the clashes were immediately available, but the military

previously captured 2 Abu Sayyaf encampments in Tipo-Tipo town and claimed to have killed at least 45 militants – although no cadavers had been recovered - in a month-long operation in the province that also left more a dozen soldiers injured. There were no reports about the Abu Sayyaf hostages in Basilan – five Malaysian tugboat crew members kidnapped off Sabah recently – and 10 Indonesian sailors in Sulu, who were also abducted near the Philippine border and that they were brought to the provinces. The military said the

operations against the Abu Sayyaf were continuing in the provinces. The clashes also coincided with an Abu Sayyaf grenade attack on the residence of Catholic priests in the village of Kakuyagan in Sulu’s Jolo town. No one was reported injured in the attack carried out by two men riding tandem on a motorbike. The Abu Sayyaf has been fighting for the establishment of a strict Islamic state, but it is also notorious in ransom kidnappings and murders of innocent civilians, mostly Christians, in the troubled region. Continued fr om page 1 from Officials said those arrested also gave out different names to mislead authorities, but army and police interrogators later found out that all those intercepted are members and relatives of Abdullah Maute, who founded the Dawlah Islamiya or “Islamic State” in southern Philippines. Interrogation reports revealed the gang was plotting to bomb civilian targets in the volatile region, according to army Major Filemon Tan, a spokesman for the Wester n Mindanao Command.

He said the daring interception and arrest of the jihadists was largely due to the intelligence provided by civilians in the province. “The fast reaction of troops and the information of concerned citizens was the key for thwarting a terror attack intended to kill innocent people in populated target areas. IEDs do not select its victims, children, Christians or Muslims, young and old, lahat papatayin niyan and in a wide scale kaya napakalaking bagay na hindi natuloy ito dahil na din sa cooperation ng

taong-bayan at responde ng sundalo at pulis,” Tan said. Just recently, security forces killed 3 members of another jihadist group called Ansar Al-Khilafah Philippines (AKP) in Daliao village in nearby Sarangani’s Maasim town and troops recovered improvised explosives from the slain militants. Both the AKP and Maute group pledged allegiance with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and pledged to support each other in fighting the Philippine government. (Mindanao Examiner)

“The crooks of the matter is if I do not talk about that relationship of De Lima to his dr iver then there is no topic to talk about because what is really very crucial there is the fact that because of that relationship with her driver which I termed immoral because the driver has a family and wife, that connection gave rise to the corruption of what was happening inside the National Penitentiar y kaya nga nagkaroon ng special privileges,” ani Duterte. Anmg Bilibid

prison ay nasa ilalim ng Department of Justice. “Are you not surprised that during her term and for a longer period when she became the secretary of Department of Justice there were special privileges granted to all or almost all inmates, there were guns there inside, there were parties being held almost every night, there was a combo, a musical group. Liquors and alcoholic drinks flowed freely and women went inside and out the prison.” “Now if I do not mention the connect between the senator who was then the secretary of Justice and her driver, how would I now explain to the public that things happened, the partying,

Gang leader behind Aussie kidnapping arrested in Zamboanga PAGADIAN CITY – Police and military authorities have arrested a sub-leader of gang linked to the 2011 kidnapping of Australian adventurer Warren Rodwell in the southern province of Zamboanga Sibugay. Police said Hasim Calon alias Husien, who belongs to the kidnap-forransom group of Barahama Alih, was arrested by security forces over the weekend in his hideout in Tenan village in Ipil town. “Hasim Calon was involved in several kidnapping incidents in the province, particularly the abduction of Joel Indino in Ipil on January 29, 2011 and Richard Warren Rodwell, an Australian national who was abducted in December 2011,” said Superintendent Rogelio Alabata, a regional police spokesman. He said policemen, backed by army soldiers,

who took part in the operation, seized crystal meth from Calon, who is also a notorious drug dealer in the province. Calon’s group also has links with the Abu Sayyaf and other rebel groups in the southern region. Just early this year, police forces killed Waning Abdulsalam – who was a former leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front – in a fire fight in the village of Singkilon in the town of Naga in Zamboanga Sibugay. Abdulsalam was one of the most wanted criminals in southern Philippines and connected also to the Abu Sayyaf. He was linked to the kidnappings of Rodwell, and Irish missionary Michael Sinnott in October 12, 2009 in Pagadian City, Italian Catholic priest Giancarlo Bossi in Zamboanga del Sur’s Payao

town in June 10, 2007. In 2012, security forces also raided Abdulsalam’s hideout in Naga and captured three of his followers following a clash in the village of Mamagon. Last year, a Filipino policeman SPO2 Jun Malban alias Michael Zoo, also tagged as involved in Rodwell’s kidnapping was arrested in Lahad Datu in Malaysia’s eastern state of Sabah where he fled after being linked by authorities to the crime. Rodwell, a former soldier in the Australian army, was kidnapped by gunmen who posed as policemen from his seaside house in Ipil town and freed on March 2013 after his Filipino wife Miraflor Gutang paid $94,000 ransom to the Abu Sayyaf, which originally demanded $2 million. drugs and even cooking shabu went well unbridled, unhampered because of the driver himself. Would you think that a driver of the Department of Justice employee could have allowed these things by all and himself, these illegal things which you saw on TV almost every day for about a month, do you think without De Lima giving him the authority to allow the inmates to do that all of these could have only happened if there was the go signal from the head of the de-

partment which is the secretary,” paliwanag pa ni Duterte. “He was also one of the bagmen, there was also another fellow there and all these things happened under your nose and shabu was floating inside and what was really painful and we knew and I know they were trafficking shabu from

the inside,” wika ni Duterte. (Malou Cablinda)

DTI unveils food innovation hub

IN ITS EFFORT to catapult local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) into the global market, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through its Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC), recently launched in Pasay City an innovation hub specifically catering to the processed food sector. It said the Food Connection Innovation hub is in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, Food Innovation Center (DOST-FIC). “With the growing opportunities in the food sector and the anticipation of the huge market de-

mand for innovative food products in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) integration, we would like to provide areas of assistance for our entrepreneurs specifically those processed food MSMEs,” PTTC Executive Director Nestor Palabyab said in a statement sent to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. He said the hub will be able to equip food entrepreneurs in meeting technical requirements of the export market such as the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points and other safety and quality certifications. Food laboratory testing equipment such as metal

detector, water activity meter and pH meter, are all aimed to be available during the hub’s full operation. Consultancy services on safe quality management, production, marketing and management will also be offered to enterprises that will be assisted by the hub. Other existing facilities at the PTTC such as seminar rooms, exhibit halls and meeting rooms will also be accessible. Philippine Trade Training Center is the DTI’s training arm which promotes capacity building and mentoring among entrepreneurs especially those in the exporting industry.

DENR-ARMM intensifies drive to promote solid waste management COTABATO CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DENR-ARMM) is intensifying its advocacy program dubbed "Basuranihan" to promote solid waste management in 5 provinces under it. The program, it said, is included in DENR-ARMM’s first 100 days action plan. Just recently, some 50 trash bins were turned-over by the regional government to the local government of Marawi in Lanao del Sur province and to the town of Shariff Aguak in Maguindanao. DENR-ARMM Secretary Kahal Kedtag said the distribution of trash bins part of their advocacy to promote waste disposal and management in the region. The first 100 days action plan of each department in ARMM is a marching order of Governor Mujiv Hataman to continue the reform agenda in the region, he

said. The local government of Shariff Aguak received 10 trash bins on August 23. The trash bins were handed over to Town Mayor Datu Marop Ampatuan and Vice Mayor Datu Akmad Ampatuan. Alindatu Pagayao, DENR-ARMM Assistant Secretary, led the turnover ceremony with Domeng Dagadas, the Maguindanao Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer. (PENRO). Meanwhile, officials of DENR-ARMM and Lanao del Sur PENRO Cosain Abbas handed over 40 trash bins to Marawi City Mayor Majul Gandamra in a simple ceremony held at the Marawi City Hall on August 22. The trash bins will be distributed to selected barangays of the city. Mayor Gandamra said one of his priorities is solid waste management, which has been an unsettled problem in the city. “We are grateful that DENR-ARMM

chose our city as one of its priority beneficiaries of the Basuranihan program,” Mayor Gandamra said. The DENR-ARMM is also set to conduct a threeday orientation on the Basuranihan to officials in the 96 barangays in Marawi City. “This is the result of our consultation before the formulation of our 100 days action plan. In Lanao del Sur, tinanong natin ang mga tao sa ground kung anong gusto nilang tutukan natin at ‘yung problema sa basura ang isa sa mga most prevailing issues,” Secretary Kedtag said. “Simple advocacies like this can make a change, may magandang resulta ang lahat ng programa ng gobyerno basta magtutulungan tayong lahat,” he added. Over all, more or less 250 trash bins have been distributed by the DENRARMM through the Basuranihan program since it started in 2014. (Bureau of Public Information)

ARMM commemorates 1976 Moro Gulf Earthquake, Tsunami COTABATO CITY – The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao commemorated the 1976 Moro Gulf Earthquake and Tsunami and this coincided with the multi-hazard simulation drill conducted by the ARMM's Office of Civil Defense at the Awang Airport in Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Maguindanao province. The drill was done in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, ARMM’s Humanitarian Emergency Action and Response Team, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), Cotabato City Regional Medical Center and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. “The drill is a venue to enhance the preparedness of the communities around the affected areas in case destructive events occur. We could also assess the response capability of various government agencies, even private and volunteer responders,” said Myrna Angot, officer-in-charge of OCD-ARMM. She said the objectives of the drill were to understand the impact of a major earthquake particularly a potential 7.9 magnitude generated by the Cotabato Trench; to

understand the command and control mechanisms at all levels based on R.A. 10121 and existing contingency plans; to test, assess, validate and evaluate the actual ground set-up of the local emergency operation centers and communication system, and to strengthen and align all existing concept of response cluster particularly with the first response. “During the disaster, life-protecting actions must be taken immediately, so this drill will also help the responders to act as quickly as possible,” she said. The other participating responders were the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police-Scenes of Cr ime Officers (PNP-SOCO), PNP-Regional Health Ser vice, PNP-Regional Public Safety Battalion, Philippine Red Cross, Bangsamoro Response Team, Bureau of Fire Protection-Emergency Medical Services, Office of the Provincial Fire Marshall-Maguindanao, Philippine Air Force-Tactical Operations Group XII, and the Cotabato City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. Angot said the activity also conforms with the national

government’s four-point plan on disaster preparedness namely public information, education, communication, and disaster response. The earthquake on August 17, 1976, generated by movement along the Cotabato Trench hit the island of Mindanao. The off-shore earthquake produced a massive tsunami killing about 6,000 people making it the most disastrous tsunami to hit the country. In a post-disaster report by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, waves as high as nine meters struck the town of Lebak in Sultan Kudarat. It inundated almost all coastal towns of provinces bordering Moro Gulf namely Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and the cities of Cotabato and Zamboanga. After last week's drill, ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman, and Regional Executive Secretary Atty. Laisa Alamia attended the evaluation and assessment of the exercise at the 6th Infantry Division, Camp Siongco in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao. (Bureau of Public Information)

korapsyon. “You know why, until now in my provincial visits, I still hear corruption being committed by people especially in the regulatory agencies, I would like to point out one – in the LTFRB. I forgot his name, but come to me and see me in Malakanyang. The LTO and those who are appointed to that position in the LTO, except the career (employees) consider you positions vacant as of this time, all of them lahat, it will number

in thousands, consider yourself in the crucible of…the truth about corruption. I hate it I do not want to give this lightest headache to my fellow human beings,” ani Duterte. Cop accused in murder of decorated army man is shot in Zamboanga MOTORCYCLE gunmen shot and seriously wounded a policeman accused in the killing of a decorated army officer in Zamboanga City ,in southern Philippines, officials said. Officials said PO3 AlZhamier Arasid was driving his tricycle along Natividad Street when gunmen attacked him last week. He was shot in the head and is in serious condition at the hospital. Police linked Arasid to the June 19 murder of Lieutenant Colonel Cristobal Julian Paolo Perez, who was shot several times in the head and body at the back

of his house in Guiwan village. It said at least 2 gunmen were involved in the killing of Perez. The 46-year old Perez assigned with the 1st Infantry Division in Zamboanga del Sur’s Labangan town was rushed to hospital where he died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the police. Superintendent Luisito Magnaye, the city’s police chief, said they filed murder charges against Arasid and was just waiting for the issuance of the arrest warrant from the court when the policeman was shot. “We are just waiting for

the warrant so we can arrest Arasid, but this happened. We are still investigating the shooting, but Arasid is the prime suspect in the killing of Perez,” Magnaye said, adding that the killing of Perez was personal grudge. He did not elaborate. No individual claimed responsibility for the shooting of Arasid. Perez was one of the army’s top commanding officers who had been largely credited for the killings of two Malaysian bombers and Abu Sayyaf jihadists in Basilan and Sulu provinces during his stint with the army. TECH TIPS: How to transfer photos from Android to microSD card

Marshmallow made some improvements for SD cards. (AndroidPIT Photo) SOONER OR later, even a phone with a ton of internal memory fills up. And photos can be a major memory burden. If you don't want to delete your precious photos in order to save memory, you can transfer them to an SD card or microSD card. Here's some ways to get it done. Transfer photos to an SD car d: get the car d in card: card Before you can transfer photos to an SD card you have to get it in the smartphone. The entry point depends on your smartphone. For the Sony Xperia Z1, the microSD slot is under the SIM card access point. And it's located on the top of the Samsung Galaxy S7. Make sure you look for the microSD or SD labels. Most manufacturers put a label where they go. If you're still having a tough time, consult your phone's manual or the Hardware section of AndroidPIT. Transfer photos to an SD car d: set sav e pathway card: save By default, your photos will be stored on the phone's internal memory rather than an external microSD card. You'll need to change the pathway so your photos will be saved on your microSD or SD card by default. In most cases, you will need to customize the storage pathway for your images in the camera app when an external memory card is inserted into the

phone. If your internal memory also is already full, the phrase 'transfer data to the SD card' should appear. From here you can specify where your photos go in the future. If the message described above does not appear, you must manually enter the pathway. Go to your phone's Settings and head into the settings of your camera app. Now scroll down until you find the Storage options. There you should select the SD card instead of the device. Transfer photos to an SD car d in Andr oid 6.0 card Android Marshmallo w arshmallow Moving pictures on an SD card on Android 6.0 marshmallow normally goes pretty smoothly. But the Marshmallow update has a useful feature where you can use a microSD card as internal memory. It's useful but you need to configure it correctly. First you need to format your microSD card. Please note: all the data stored on it will be lost. Go into your phone's storage settings and find your microSD card. Now tap the menu (the three dots), select Settings and reformat your memory card. Now data, such as photos, can be moved to the memory card as internal memory, which among other things has the advantage that most of the data is automatically downloaded to the new internal memory. But beware, if you

use a microSD card as internal memory, it may no longer be that easy to transfer data to your PC once the card is removed. Transfer photos to an SD car d in Andr oid 5.0 card Android Lollipop If you have Android 5.0 Lollipop, there is the possibility that apps adjusted so that your images can move directly from the camera app to the SD card. After the Lollipop update, the Galaxy S4 camera app will automatically ask if you want to save the images to your newly inserted SD card. If your camera app does not react, despite the Lollipop updates, you will have to download a different camera app and look to see if it uses the new programming. This should allow you to save the photos on your SD card. Photos mo ve to the SD mov car d for Andr oid 4.4 card Android KitK at itKat After the Android 4.4 KitKat update, new safety regulations applied to apps and they could no longer access other directories. Specifically, for camera apps, this means that they can no longer save images to your SD card when the app itself is not located on the SD card. The MX Camera app solves this problem by adjusting your settings to where your images are being saved. You can download the app below. (Cory Schmidt, AndroidPIT)

Parang may balakubak sila.

Iwas galis. Iwas kuto. Panatilihing malinis ang katawan.
