Troops hunt down Sayyafs BASILAN – Security forces continue to hunt down Abu Sayyaf rebels following a recent clash in the town of Sumisip that left over a dozen casualties on the military side, officials said. ARMM, NCCA implement cultural mapping project for Muslim communities COTABATO CITY – The Bureau on Cultural Heritage (BCH) of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) are implementing a cultural mapping project for Muslim communities. Officials of the two institutions met recently for a consultative meeting on a research and documentation initiative that will come up with an inventory and registr y of cultural properties that need preservation and protection. NCCA is the planning and policy making body of the government on the preservation and protection of culture. Fr. Harold Rentoria, OSA, NCCA Commissioner for Cultural Heritage, described cultural mapping as a process of identifying, recording, and using cultural resources and activities in building communities. “Ang kultura ay parang kaluluwa ng bansa. Ever ything emanates from our
culture; this is why we would like to preserve it for our identity as people of the ARMM, and as Filipinos. Kaya gumawa tayo ng sistema so that we will be able to pass on to our children what we have in the past, that still exist in the present, that they can use in the future,” Fr. Rentoria said on the need to preserve cultural heritage and the cultural mapping. Fr. Rentoria also called on local government units in the region to support and take accountability on projects relating to cultural heritage. It is important, he said, to craft projects that will aid in their preservation and protection. “Ang progress and development natin ay hindi lang sa mga current na pamamaraan, dapat kasama narin ang ating nakaraan. Marami nang mga pag aaral at mga success stories if we are able to preserve our heritage and this can be really good for our socioeconomic development as well,” Fr. Rentor ia said. Meanwhile, Executive Director Mar ites Maguindra of the BCHARMM expressed optimism on the region’s
renewed ties with the NCCA. This is not the first time the two agencies worked together, but Maguindra said stronger ties with the NCCA is very beneficial for the ARMM since BCH has limitations in resources. “Marami tayong plans on cultural preservation and we have already done some of them even with our constraints and limitations, and we are looking forward that NCCA will help us bridge those gaps,” Maguindra said. “Nakakatakot na in 10 years time kapag hindi natin na-preserve hindi lang ang mga items, kung hindi pati ang transfer ng skills, baka tuluyan ng mawala ang mga heritage na ito,” she adds. The consultation meeting was also a venue for BCH to propose to the NCCA possible projects that they could jointly implement in the future. It can be a place where would-be terrorists can go… they can train, arms seem to move fairly easily into that area,” Shanmugam added. Parts of Southeast Asia have long struggled with Islamic militancy. Hundreds of radicals from the region, including from Indonesia and
Malaysia, have flocked to join IS in Iraq and Syria. But as IS suffers battlefield setbacks, officials and analysts fear these fighters would return to their home region. Southeast Asia suffered its first IS-linked attack in January last year when extremists launched a deadly suicide bombing and gun attack in Jakarta. ARMM governor speaks on Mindanao issues in U.S. forum COTABATO CITY – Gover nor Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) recently flew to Washington D.C. where he spoke at a forum organized by the Philippine Embassy, U.S.-Philippines Society and SAIS Southeast Asia Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Hataman discussed the Duterte government’s initiatives on peace, security, and economic development in the autonomous region as well as the proposed Bangsamoro autonomy in the southern Philippines. He has been consistent in expressing full support to the peace process and even offered to step down – even before his term ends on 2019 – should there be a new government that will be formed for the region as a result of the Mindanao peace agreement. Last year, President Rodrigo Duterte established a transition commission for Bangsamoro self-government to replace the ARMM, but decided that the current regional government should remain in place. ARMM covers the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and the cities of Lamitan and Marawi. In 2014, Hataman also spoke on the southern peace process under the Aquino administration in Washington D.C. through the invitation of the U.S.-Philippines Society, a private sector initiative whose concerns are in the areas of security, trade, investments, tourism, the
environment, histor y, education and culture. Hataman has always been a man on a mission. With a strong desire to correct the many misconceptions about the Bangsamoro, Hataman led the region by instituting major reforms that showed the regional government’s innate capacity for self-governance. Upon the passage of the ARMM Synchronization Law in 2011, Hataman was appointed as the region’s OIC-Governor by former President Benigno Aquino and in 2013, he ran and won the elections as ARMM governor, and was then re-elected for a second term in May 2016. The Good Governance, Peace and Security, and Socio Economic Development model was Hataman’s brainchild, which outline the major pillars of reform in the region. In his first year as Regional Governor, he implemented policies, programs, and projects which surpassed the previous achievements of the region in its more than two-decades of existence. It was this exemplary display of leadership that earned the trust of the National Government and investors, which led to the passage of a bigger budget for the ARMM, an increase in investments, and a marked growth in the region’s GDP. Hataman is also known as a strong advocate of the Bangsamoro peace process and because of his track record as regional governor, he was selected as an Eisenhower Fellow in
2013. He was also given the Excellence in Public Service Award in 2014 by the Bulong Pulungan, an organization of journalists in the Philippines, and the Outstanding Governorship Award in 2015 and 2016 by the Superbrands Marketing International. Prior to his stint as governor of the region, Hataman was already known for his dedication to the Bangsamoro. A former student-leader and human rights activist, he was known for his participation inthe people’s struggle in asser ting their right to self-determination, and his commitment to just means towards ending the Mindanao conflict. As a response to the alarming human rights violations committed both by state and nonstate armed groups in Basilan, he founded the Kahapan Foundation in 1995. In 2001, he elected congressman under the Anak Mindanao partylist and served for three terms. As a lawmaker, he was one of the principal authors of the Anti-Religious and Racial Profiling Act of 2010. He also filed an Act Prohibiting Discrimination Against Persons on Account of Ethnic Origin and/or Religious Belief, among other anti-discrimination bills. Hataman was born to a Yakan father from Sumisip town in Basilan and a Tausug mother from Sulu’s Pata town and is married to Anak Mindanao party-list Congresswoman Sitti Djalia Turabin, with whom he has five children. ARMM, PEZA get help from US Halal Chamber of Commerce in exploring US halal market WASHINGTON D.C. — The US Halal Chamber of Commerce hosted a recent forum for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) here and it discussed at how Mindanao’s producers of halal products could access the US market. Habib Ghanim, CEO of the US Halal Chamber of Commerce, led a group of experts in briefing the Philippine delegation on different business opportunities, as well as challenges, in the US halal trade. During the forum, organizers proposed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) be signed among PEZA, ARMM and the US Halal Chamber of Commerce in order to formalize cooperation and assistance. “I believe that this will go a long way towards ensur-

ing the empowerment of ecozones of Mindanao,” PEZA Director General Charito Plaza said. ARMM Gover nor Mujiv Hataman earlier this year officially declared the Polloc Freeport and Ecozone in Parang town in Maguindanao province as ‘halal hub.’ “The ARMM government is continually working to open the possibilities to the halal market for the region as well as for the country,” Gov. Hataman said during the event marking Polloc Freeport’s declaration as halal hub. Aleem Siddiqui Guiapal, executive director of the ARMM-Regional Economic Zone Authority and a member of the Philippine delegation, noted four important areas that should be addressed, namely: consensus on certification
requirements that avoid confusing, contradictory and costly requirements; protect the integrity of halal certification in order to avoid loss of confidence by consumers; ensure that claims regarding health and safety are based on science and not on shariah alone; and to address the relative lack of information on halal markets. The delegation considered the proposed cooperative effort to be timely because the global halal market is wor th about $2.77 trillion annually with trade in halal foods at $700 billion, accounting for as much as 12% of global trade in agro-food products. The Abu Sayyafs are on the run. They don’t have any more strongholds in Basilan.” “We agreed with the Armed Forces of the Philippines to add a military battalion in this town to ensure the safety of the residence and prevent the Abu Sayyaf from establish-
ing its presence again,” he said, pledging an initial P10 million worth of infrastructure projects in Macalang. “The groundbreaking ceremony is a symbol that governance is back in Macalang.” Hataman said since 2012, the regional government allocated some P877 million worth of projects like roads and bridges to spur development and help the local economy progress. TECH TIPS: What is Chromecast? Google’s Brilliant Streaming Device Explained
A small dongle you connect to your TV, that's all Chromecast really is. / © ANDROIDPIT YOU’VE heard people talking about it, and you’ve been too embarrassed to ask. I sympathise, and understand your plight. It seems like the whole world knows and you are in the dark. What exactly is Chromecast? Fortunately for you lucky little ducks I’m here to give some insight into what Chromecast is, how it works, and why you should think about getting it. What is Chr omecast? Chromecast? Chromecast, as Google puts it, is “the easiest way to enjoy online video and music on your TV.” For only 35 USD, Google provides you with a HDMI dongle which connects directly to your TV (as long as it has a spare HDMI port). This enables you to stream music and video straight to your TV using your Android device as a controller. How does it wor k? work? Chromecast connects to the HDMI output of your TV and pairs with one of your Android devices via Wi-Fi. The setup, while not completely user-friendly, is much more intuitive than any of the competition: install the app on your device, plug Chromecast into your TV, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and pair it with your device. Now, look for the Chromecast symbol in your favorite apps to view them on your TV. Why should I car e? care? Chromecast currently works with a number of

popular apps including Netflix, HBO GO, YouTube, WatchESPN and Pandora, with the list continually growing. If you're somebody who watches a lot of TV on your phone, or maybe someone who doesn't because the screen is too small, then Chromecast offers an elegant solution. And the Android smartphone or tablet that you already know and love is used as the controler for all of the settings, no need for a separate remote! What else can it do? Chromecast can also act as a mirror for your Android Device, replicating what’s on your small screen on your almighty TV. This is useful for working with certain productivity apps, or when trying to show your grandparents your favorite holiday snaps. I suppose I also need the latest smar tphone and a smartphone 4K, 3D TV? Actually, Chromecast works with any devices running Android 2.3 or higher and any TV with a HDMI output. If your TV has a free USB port, you can charge the Chromecast over USB instead of with the included wall charger, but it’s not exactly necessary. How much does it cost? Weren’t you paying attention earlier? The regular Chromecast RRP is a mere 35 USD, which is already
an amazing investment when compared to the competition. Both Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV currently cost 99 USD. Is ther e anything else I there should kno w? know? What else do you want to know? I’ve already offered a pretty comprehensive overview, wouldn’t you agree? Okay one more thing: Google is currently running a deal that gets you 3 months of free access to its unlimited music streaming service from Google Play, which usually costs 9.99 USD per month. As long as you buy and begin using Chromecast by September 30th 2014, you will qualify for the offer. If my calculations are correct (often they’re not, but this time I’ve double-checked my working and remembered to carry the one), that effectively prices the Chromecast service at a mere 5 USD if you buy it before September 30th. 5 USD? I found 5 bucks trapped in a bush when I was walking to work yesterday. I gave my roommate 5 bucks to stop singing in the shower not two days ago. Heck, I discovered five bucks lying on the ground when I was at the market buying a whistle just last week. Basically, five bucks isn't a huge investment and makes Chromecast a pretty great deal. You don’t feel anything until it’s too late. So, if you are 40 years old and above, or if you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure, get a yearly checkup. Studies show that people who get regular checkups live longer than those who don’t. 4. Engaging in ex-

So why add to your risks further by engaging in dangerous sports like car racing, thrill rides, professional boxing, and wrestling? A survey at Monash University in Australia shows that horse riding, power boating, and motorsports cause the highest injuries. 5. Yoyo diet and fad diet (minus five years). Do everything in moderation. A yoyo diet is a kind of diet fad wherein a person gains weight, then goes on a diet for a few weeks, and then binges again. Some people skip breakfast and then take on a huge meal later. Others rotate from a high-protein diet to various diet fads or diet pills, all of which are potentially harmful to the body. Try to lose or gain weight by just one to two pounds a week. 6. Thinking old (minus five years). The body will follow what the mind tells it to. Therefore, feel young and think positive. Believe you’ll beat your disease and you
can. To learn more about positive thinking, I urge our readers to read any of Peale’s enlightening books. 7. Lack of exercise (minus seven years). Studies show that even mild exercise has some health benefits. Moderate exercise has been proven to prevent diabetes and maintain body weight. 8. Unsafe sex (minus eight years). Having multiple sexual partners carries attendant risks for sexually transmitted diseases. While gonorrhea and herpes can be cured, there is still no vaccine or cure for HIV-AIDS. 9. Smoking (minus eight years). There are over 70,000 scientific articles to prove that smoking damages your heart, lungs, esophagus, stomach, bowels, prostate, and predisposes you to all kinds of cancer. In fact, smokingrelated illnesses are the top causes of mortality. If you want to live longer, quit smoking. 10. Not taking your medicines (minus 10 years). Studies show that when a patient with high blood pressure takes his medicines, he may live 10 to 15 years longer as compared to someone who does not take his medicines. For diabetes patients, studies show that reducing the blood sugar to normal levels has enormous health benefits.
RECIPE: Beef and Baby Corn Stir Fry
INGREDIENT S: INGREDIENTS:
– ¾ lbs beef sirloin, sliced into thin strips – 15 pieces baby corn – 1½ cups snap peas – 1 small red bell pepper, sliced into strips – ¼ cup light soy sauce
– 3 to 4 tablespoons oyster sauce – 1½ tablespoons cornstarch – ½ teaspoon ground black pepper – ½ teaspoon salt – 3 table spoon Shoaxing cooking wine – 3 tablespoon cooking oil
INSTR UCTIONS: INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Arrange beef in a bowl. Add ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, soy sauce, and oyster sauce. Mix well. 2) Add the cornstarch. Make sure all the ingredients are well blended. Set aside. 3) Meanwhile, heat a wok or a pan. Pour-in the cooking oil. Once the oil gets hot, stir-fry the baby corn, snap peas, and red bell pepper for 3 to 5 minutes. 4) Add salt and remaining pepper. Pour the cooking wine in the wok and stir-fry for 3 minutes. 5) Transfer the vegetables to a plate. Set aside. 6) Using the remaining cooking oil (add a tablespoon of cooking oil if needed), stir fry the marinated beef for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the stir-fried vegetables and continue to stir-fry for another 2 to 4 minutes. 7) Transfer to a serving plate. Serve. 8) Share and enjoy! (http://www.panlasangpinoy.com)

gaining inroads into the Portuguese market as a holiday destination seen through the increasing number of tourist arrivals from Portugal every year. Based on the data from the Philippine Depar tment of Tourism, tourist arrivals from Portugal increased when compared to the previous year’s figures by 14.88 percent in 2014, to 22.62 percent in 2015, and up by 35.95 percent in 2016.

Tropical fruits featured on stamps THIS summer season, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released colorful stamps featuring the country’s popular fruits. Some of the images of popular fruits in the Philippines presented in postage stamps, include the Egg Fruit (Pouteriacampechiana) or commonly known as chesa or “Tiessa” in the vernacular. It is a yellowish and pulpy fruit that looks like a boiled egg yolk. The wild sweetsop (Rolliniadeliciosa) is a flowering plant in the custard-apple family. It is cultivated for its edible fruits, commonly known as “biriba” or wild sugar apple.
Western Mindanao
The Philippine wild raspberry (Rubusrosifolius) or Sapinit, which is endemic in the provinces of Quezon, Laguna, Palawan and some parts of Mindanao. The fruit has a bright red-orange color with a distinct bitter-soursweet taste and a hairy receptacle. The dragon fruit (Hylocereusundatus) – a redskinned fruit with white flesh or sometimes reddish in color. It is known as a cleansing fruit and carries many health benefits. Also, PHLPost issued Pomelo stamps. Pomelos have a sweet, mild taste and a very thick rind inside of the pale green or yellow exterior.

C a l a m a n s i (Citrofortunellamitis) is a tropical lime native to Southeast Asia. It is cultivated for its edible but incredibly sour fruit. Calamansi is packed with ascorbic acid or vitamin C. Another famous fruit found in the Philippines is the Tamarind which is a delicious, sweet fruit that has a wide variety of uses and applications, both for medicinal and culinary purposes. The stamps in different denomination and official first day cover are now available at the Manila Central Post Office and in area post offices nationwide.
