Felix Y. Manalo Foundation Honored in U.S. From page 1 THE US CITY of Rockford has declared every August 25 as Felix Y. Manalo (FYM) Foundation Day, barely a month since it hosted the “Aid to Humanity” that benefited hundreds of residents there. The FYM Foundation is the charitable arm of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC or Church Of Christ). The Aid to Humanity distributed 1,100 backpacks of school supplies and slightly used winter wear, and conducted free health screenings in Rockford. Ten local organizations were each offered $5,000 donations to assist them in the impactful work they were accomplishing in the community of Rockford. The Rockford City proclamation applauded the FYM Foundation for “their generous gifts and on their many years of spreading good will,” according to Mayor Thomas McNamara. Eduardo Javier stated, who accepted the proclamation on behalf of the FYM Foundation, thanked McNamara and the City Government and all those behind it. “We would like to express our heartfelt thanks, first and foremost to the Mayor of the City of Rock-

ford Mayor McNamara, and to all of the members of the Council. Rest assured, as promised by the Church Of Christ, we will always be a partner to the City of Rockford, Illinois in fighting against poverty.” “This proclamation, FYM Foundation Day, will be part of Iglesia Ni Cristo history as we celebrate the 105th anniversary of the Church and as we celebrate the 10th year anniversary of our Brother Eduardo V. Manalo. More power to the City of Rockford, Illinois,” Javier said. Dino Bunag, District Supervising Minister of the 36 congregations across the northern Midwest area, also praised the Rockford City Government for the proclamation. “We are humbly honored to see the goodwill of the FYM Foundation and the Church Of Christ be ac-

knowledged by the City of Rockford, but more importantly we are thankful to God that the Church has been able to positively impact the lives of the residents of not only Rockford, not only Illinois, but throughout the Midwest,” Bunag said. Earlier this summer, the Aid to Humanity tour, of which Rockford was the 9th and last stop, swept the nation providing immediate relief aid to communities, and donations to dozens of organizations on the ground - from the Mexican border-town in San Diego County to the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona; from the San Francisco Bay Area to Seattle; and from Los Angeles to New York; and from Memphis’ poorest zip code to just outside the nation’s capital in Maryland. In-charge of this year’s Mutya ng Makilala is the Department of Education – Armac leader Nestor Usop, of Kisante National High School; with Municipal Administrator Sheryl Orbita, the over-all and in-charge of Makilala Sinabbadan Festival 2019. First termer and hard-working Makilala Mayor Armando Quibod together with his First Lady Conchita Quibod - who are both very supportive of the event - said the pageant does not only show the beauty of the local women, but also the rich cultural heritage of the town. Members of the Sanguniang Bayan headed by its presiding officer Vice Mayor Ryan Tabanay praised the pageant andd urged residents to support and participate in the event by actively sharing the news of the festival on social media such as Facebook and Instagram, and to their friends and relatives residing outside North Cotabato. By simply spreading the good news about Makilala and its festivities, it will surely attract local and foreign tourists and bring economic prosperity to the peaceful town. The Mutya ng Makilala 2019 Casual and Talent presentation will be held at the Makilala parish covered court on October 7, while the pageant proper and coronation night are set on October 9 from 6 p.m. onwards at the Municipal Gymnasium.

But its major firms are STANFILCO-DOLE which is engaged in cavendish banana production, and rubber processing companies - STANDECO, FARMA, MRDI, PIONEER, LASRI, MRI, and DAVCO – and wood processing company RNF Summit Industries, a manufacturer of quality pallets, doors and mouldings. Makilala’s fertile lands produce the best rubber, rice, coconut, coffee, banana, vegetables and is famous for its sweet durian, marang, rambutan and mangosteen. It also attracts regular tourists to Mount Apo National Park and two of the tallest waterfalls Matibago, Sang’ngawan and Padalagi; and the New Israel Ecological Adventure Park and its 2.2-kilometer zipline. There are also cold springs and hot sulphuric pools which is reputed to have healing effects. Makilala is remarkably shaped with flatlands and criss-crossing terrain scattered along hills and plateaus. The eastern and southern flanks virtually rise to form part of the Mt. Apo western ranges and the chain of mountains towards Davao Del Sur which are Mt. Libadan, Mt. Niponggis, Mt. Pangayasan and Mt. Gap. (Rhoderick Beñez)

No African Swine Fever in North Cotabato

Acting Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño-Mendoza led the feast on a savoury lechon which is sought after in the province to show that pork in North Cotabato is safe to eat. (Mark Anthony Tayco)

KIDAPAWAN CITY – North Cotabato has remain free from the African Swine Fever (ASF) because of the strong campaign and public information drive by the provincial and municipal governments as part of a united effort to prevent the spread of the virus on pigs. AFS is a large, double-stranded DNA virus in the Asfarviridae family. The virus is transmitted to pigs through direct contact with infected pigs, their waste, contaminated clothing, feed, equipment and vehicles, and in some cases, some tick species. Although ASF cannot be transmitted to humans through contact with pigs or pork, the virus causes a haemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in domestic pigs; some isolates can cause death of animals as quickly as a week after infection. North Cotabato’s implementation of the veterinary quarantine

ordinance resulted in ASF-free province, according to Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Rufino Suropia. He said pork in North Cotabato are safe to eat, although Suropia reminded the public that any meat should be cooked thoroughly to ensure that no bacteria goes in the human system. Even Acting Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño-Mendoza led the feast on a savoury lechon which is sought after in the province to show that pork in North Cotabato is safe to eat. The Provincial Government also distributed 195 piglets to beneficiaries in North Cotabato which has been declared ASF-free. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Regional Supervisor Nicanora Deomampo Rabara also advised the public to stay away from canned goods made from pork which came from countries where there are

widespread ASF cases. The FDA in May ordered the pull-out from the markets of all processed pork products such as luncheon meat imported from countries affected by the ASF – China, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Moldova, South Africa, Zambia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Belgium, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Mongolia, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Despite being ASF-free, North Cotabato has tightened its watch on the entry of hog and pork products in the province as a measure against the fatal animal disease. The Department of Agriculture confirmed the first ASF outbreak started on July 25 in mostly backyard pigs in the provinces of Rizal and Bulacan and other areas in Quezon City in Luzon. HUNT IS ON FOR TERRORISTS ‘Swedish man, 3 others tied to Isulan bombing captured’ Continued from page 1 It said soldiers also seized an ISIS flag from the trio, including an M16 automatic rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, a .38-caliber revolver, a shot gun, an improvised explosive, and 13 cellular phones among other things. But details of their capture were not made public in the vague military report, but Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, chief of the Western Mindanao Com-

mand, urged the public to remain vigilant. “Let us remain vigilant for there are still enemies out there who will always try to inflict havoc in the communities,” Sobejana said. It was unknown whether the Swedish man and the others are members of ISIS or other Islamic extremist groups such as the proISIS Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters - a breakaway faction of the larger Moro Islamic Lib-

eration Front (MILF) which was suspected to have carried out the September 7 bombing. The motorcycle, rigged with explosives, was parked outside the market when it went off and wounded at least 8 people nearby, including a traffic constable. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the terror attack, but it occurred even as the whole southern region is under an extended martial rule.

It was unclear how the bomber managed to sneak into the town, passing through several police and military checkpoints and road blocks and left the motorcycle bomb undetected by authorities. The attack coincided with the mass surrender of MILF fighters. The MILF, which signed an interim peace deal with Manila in 2014, said a total of 1,060 combatants from about 40,000 fighters - and their weapons were decommissioned as part of a process that will help the rebels return to the fold of the law and establish a

civilian life. Rebel chieftain Murad Ebrahim, who is also the Chief Minister of the Muslim autonomous region, said the weapons were handed over to the independent decommissioning body headed by Turkish Ambassador Fatih Ulusoy. After their surrender, the rebels will each receive at least P100,000 from the Duterte government and a socio-economic assistance package of up to P1 million. In April, over a dozen people were injured when a motorcycle rigged with explosives also went

5

off outside the Carlito’s Chicken restaurant in Isulan town. The blast coincided with the town’s 61st founding anniversary. A similar attack claimed by the Islamic State - also occurred in August last year when a motorcycle bomb exploded outside a row of shops in Isulan and wounded several civilians. Security forces have been fighting several Islamist groups in the troubled region where President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the armed forces to crush terrorism. Gunmen seized 3 Indon fishermen off Sabah

Indonesian Consul-General Krishna Djelani, Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal arrive for Indonesia’s 74th Independence Day reception in Kota Kinabalu September 23, 2019. (Bernama) Continued from page 1 confirmed by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal who said the fishermen were likely Buton, an island off Sulawesi. The three men have been identified as Samiun Maniu, 27, Maharuydin Lunani, 48, and Muhammas Farhan, 27. Only three of the 7 fishermen were seized by gunmen, according to Sabah commissioner of police Datuk Omar Mammah. He said that the victims were on a pair of trawlers when masked gunmen on two motorized boats intercepted them off Tambisan Island just 7 nautical miles from the town of Lahad Datu. “While the trawlers were fishing for prawns, the suspects’ pump boats approached the two boats from behind, and gunmen, dressed in camouflage gear and masks, boarded the two trawlers. Four gunmen boarded the first boat and three suspects boarded the second boat. They aimed a gun at the three crew men on

one boat and told them to get on the pump boat.” “On the other boat, the suspects took all of the documents and cell phones from the crewmen, but did not take any of the four fishermen on board,” Omar was quoted as saying by the Malay Mail. “They then sped off towards the islands of Tawi-Tawi in Philippines. The three kidnapped victims were aged between 27 and 40 years old.” No individual or group claimed responsibility for the abduction, but early this month Bernama reported that Indonesian Consul General Krishna Djelani warned Indonesians to stay vigilant after receiving reports that suspected Abu Sayyaf militants may strike in Sabah. “We were initially informed that there was a movement of armed groups from southern Philippines that had to do with kidnapping for ransom. Any information that we receive, we have to warn the Indonesians

there as a precaution, lest they become victims (of abduction). Our only intention (to issue the notification) is to warn our citizens to be careful,” he said. Sabah is home to about 300,000 Indonesians and the warning was raised to ensure that those working as fishermen and crew members of ships take safety precautions and not fall victim to ransom kidnapping. The warning said three Abu Sayyaf groups were reported to have moved into the waters of eastern Sabah on August 30 with the intention to kidnap by targeting several ships, namely Kapal Batubara, Kapal Tanker, Nelayan Kapal Lengkong and Kapal Tarik Udang, especially in Bakongan, Bahala, Sandakan, Mamiang, Tambisan in Sabah, and Taganak in the southern border of Tawi-Tawi. There were no immediate reports from Philippine authorities about the latest abductions. (Zamboanga Post)

HEALTH

Chikungunya at Dengue Fever Ni Dr. Willie T. Ong

South Korea opens more flights to Cebu CEBU CITY – The tourism industry in Cebu is expected to attract more visitors from South Korea following Jeju Air’s inaugural flight here from Daeg City in North Gyeongsang province. Louie Ferrer, president

of the GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC), operator of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), said the flight carried 173 passengers. He thanked Jeju Air for choosing Cebu as its destina-

tion of future flights. “We are glad to welcome Jeju Air’s inaugural flight from Daegu and we thank them for expanding their network in Cebu,” he said. Ferrer led other officials from the MCIA’s private operator, GMCAC, along with the

representatives from Jeju Air and the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Central Visayas, in greeting the arriving passengers with warm smiles, colorful leis, and offered them Cebu’s dried sweet mangoes. The Asian market, Ferrer said, continues to be among the strongest in Cebu, with Koreans comprising 42.5 percent of international visitors in 2018. He said the Koreans were followed by Japan and China at 16% and 11%, respectively. DOT also announced that South Korea continues to be the Philippines top tourist market for the first half of this year, followed by China, and Japan. “We continue to work on opening more connections to Cebu from our Asian neighbors. Cebu’s central location is highly strategic, with most domestic tourist destinations only an hour’s flying time or less,” Ferrer

said. “Our goal is to establish MCIA as a hub for flights to the Philippines and even (to) other Asian countries.” Jeju Air started its direct service from MCIA to Daegu on September 18. The carrier will operate the Cebu-Daegu route four times weekly every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. For this route, Jeju Air will use Boeing 737800 with a passenger capacity of 189, all-economy seats. Keunwoo Lee, station manager of Jeju Air, expressed delight in seeing Cebu by himself. “We are thrilled to grow our network in MCIA because we see Cebu as a bustling city, yet it still has many scenic tourist spots which entices the Korean travelers,” Lee said. Daegu is the fourth destination in South Korea operated by Jeju Air. Currently, Jeju Air also flies to Incheon, Pusan,

and Muan. GMCAC Chief Commercial Advisor Ravishankar Saravu said another Korean low-cost carrier T’Way Air also operates a Cebu-Daegu direct service which started in December 2016. “South Korea is a favorite leisure destination for many Filipinos. By launching this direct service, Jeju Air is offering more options for Filipinos to explore new and exciting destinations in South Korea,” he said.
