While Duterte rants against ABSCBN, Sara supports TV network WHILE PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte ranted and cursed television giant ABS-CBN for failing to air his political propaganda during the 2016 election campaign, his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Carpio expressed full support to the media network. “Davao City fully supports ABS-CBN sa kanilang pagpapa-renew ng kanilang franchise. Of course malaki din ang suporta ng ABS-CBN sa Davao City at sa buong bansa. Hopefully ma-resolve in a very positive way ang issue ng franchise ng ABS-CBN,” she told reporters in Sulu where she joined political ally Governor Sakur Tan in the inauguration of a school build-
ing recently. ABS-CBN president and CEO Carlo Katigbak apologized to Duterte during a Senate hearing last week. “We are sorry if we offended the President. That was not the intention of the network. We felt that we were just abiding by the laws and regulations that surround the airing of political ads,” he said. The television advertisement showed Duterte cussing with children asking if he was doing the right thing. Duterte has publicly and repeatedly threatened to shut down ABS-CBN despite appeals from the network’s employees and artists, among other groups.
Duterte has accepted the apology and now saying it is up to Congress to renew the franchise of ABS-CBN which is to expire in May. “Yes, nandiyan iyan. I accept the apology of course. I leave it to Congress. The critical move is in the House and I tell you I am not going to interfere,” Duterte said, but he was quick to say that he has not decided whether to veto or approve the franchise bill granting ABS-CBN another 25-year license to operate. “I will cross the bridge when I get there. Maybe I will call the media to help me out. It would be a difficult decision, really,” he said. (Mindanao Examiner)

Military condemns NPA recruitment of teener PAGADIAN CITY – Security officials accused the communist rebel group New People’s Army of recruiting teenagers and use them to fight the democratic government which is a violation of the International Humanitarian Law. Just recently, government soldiers recovered a 14-year old communist fighter after he was lost in the forest in Misamis Occidental’s Don Victoriano Chongbian town. A cattleman spotted the young unarmed rebel roaming around the village Mansawan and quickly told the military about the boy. Members of the 10th Infantry Battalion were immediately sent to the village and found the
boy who admitted being a child warrior of the New People’s Army. During questioning, the rebel - a native of Zamboanga del Norte’s Sergio Osmeña town – told soldiers that he was recruited by his cousin in December 2018 and eventually joined the Guerilla Front Sendong – Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee operating in Zamboanga del Norte and Misamis Occidental. The young rebel said he was left behind by rebels in the forest of Mount Malindang which prompted him to search for a nearest community. Colonel Leonel Nicolas, commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade,
condemned the NPA for recruiting children and uses them to fight the democratic government. “This clearly shows that the communist terrorist group is continuously violating the International Humanitarian Law which prohibits the recruitment and use of children in hostilities,” he said. Major General Generoso Ponio, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, said the boy was handed over to the municipal police and social workers. “The rescued minor is now brought to Sergio Osmena Municipal Police Station and Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for proper disposition and counsel-

SULU – Military forces continue its assault on Abu Sayyaf lairs in the southern Filipino province of Sulu where fighting killed at least 2 militants and also wounded two soldiers, officials said. “Pursuit and deliberate offensives continue to pressure and pound down Abu Sayyaf fighters, constricting their movement and pre-empting terror ploys in the ZamBaSulTa area,” Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said referring to Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces.
Sobejana said troops were targeting Abu Sayyaf leaders Radulan Sahiron and Hajan Sawadjaan, who pledged allegiance to ISIS. The assault began last week in Bakong village in Patikul town where security forces pounded the Abu Sayyaf strongholds. “We build up combat and intelligence operations to debilitate the militants in Sulu,” he said, adding, members of the 15th Scout Ranger Company were running after the militants and their leaders. Sobejana described Sunday’s fighting as “ferocious” after two of his
soldiers were injured in the clash. Troops retaliated with a barrage of mortar fires as ground forces pushed for the kill. “Two brave soldiers were also slightly wounded in a fierce of gunfire. Mortar teams immediately delivered fire support to the engaged troops,” he said. Joint Task Force Sulu under the command of Major General Corleto S. Vinluan Jr. said one of the slain militant was identified as Baby Abdurasa, a notorious Abu Sayyaf fighter. The Abu Sayyaf is believed to be holding five Indonesian fishermen kidnapped in January off Sabah and brought by boat to Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the restive Muslim autonomous region. Eight masked gunmen hijacked their trawler near Tambisan Island and seized five of the 8 crew - Arsyad Abdullah, the skipper; and crew members 41; La Baa, 32; Riswanto Hayano, 27; Edi Lawalopo, 53; and Syarizal Kastamiran, 29, all based in Sandakan. They were snatched from the same area where the Abu Sayyaf captured 3 Indonesian fishermen in September last year and brought to Sulu. The trio - Muhammad Farhan, 27, Samiun Maneu, 26, and Maharudin Lunani, 26, were all rescued separately by Filipino troops in Sulu. (Mindanao Examiner)

Drug lords slapped with more cases trade in Cebu City in 2008 while inside the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center where he was detained. His alleged suppliers were Lim, Impal and Cebu drug lord Jeffrey Diaz who was killed in a police operation in Las Piñas City in 2016. Espinosa is currently under detention at the NBI jail while Wu Tuan Yuan is at the New Bilibid Prison. Impal is presently detained at the Iligan City Jail while Gerpacio is at the Cavite Provincial Jail. Among the pieces of evidence presented by the NBI against those accused was the testimony of state witness Reynaldo Diaz who admitted that Espinosa’s main source was his cousin Jeffrey, and Lim. Diaz also claimed that at the peak of the Cebu drug trade from 2010 to 2011, the group
was able to sell five to 10 kilos of shabu a month. Aside from Espinosa, Diaz said that Jeffrey also supplied shabu to drug dealers in the Visayas namely Rowen Sakitaria alias Yawa, Franz Sabalones, and three other men known only by their aliases Riking, Rey and Roland. Another piece of evidence was the Securities and Exchange Commission general information sheet of Hilton Heavy Equipment Corporation which listed Peter G. Lim of San Jose dela Montana, Mabolo, Cebu City as its president and a member of the board of directors. Espinosa also used cell phones, electronic money transfer and bank transactions in his drug trade and hired Melvin Gerpacio to distribute and collect payments in the villages of Pasil, Ermita, Ponce, Villagonzalo and
