Tan, a respected and influential leader in the South, thanked all those who attended the inauguration of his depot. He did not say how much was invested in the depot, but

Tan was previously honored by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) as among its top tax payers and awarded him for his revenue contributions in the region. The BIR praised Tan for his tax payments and said other politicians who have business of their own or their family should emulate him, whose family operates several gas depots, among others, in the South. It also awarded the Sulu provincial government, saying, “Sulu is one of the best (revenue) contributors and is also awarded as one of the highest tax payers in the province.” Tan also thanked the BIR for the recognition awards and said he has been paying his taxes religiously even before he was not in public service for many decades now. “Paying the correct taxes and religiously for that matter is our duty and the taxes also go back to us, to the people in terms of basic services and infrastructures, and many more and we have been very supportive of this effort and a strong advocate of tax collections,” Tan said. Tan has been paying government taxes by the tens of million and said he would like these (awards) to set an example to other public servants. “These also erase notion that our people do not pay taxes. We do pay for as long as

we have the income. We pay for the income we make to government because we know the government will return this to the people in terms of important projects,” he said. “Unang-una yun mga namumuno (sa gobyerno tulad namin) sila ang dapat maging model na nagbabayad ng buwis sa atin pamahalaang ng sa ganoon ay mabura rin ang impression at saka imahe ng mga pulitiko na sila ay hindi nagbabayad ng taxes o other income. Alam natin seryoso yun ating national government kaya dapat tumulong tayo at nagpapasalamat nga tayo this is a way on our part as members of the community our way of thanking the national government for providing and knowing that the revenues and taxes that we pay are plowed back to us,” Tan said. Minsu Oil, Inc. also maintains dozens of scholars and has given many students the opportunity to finish their college education and be productive members of society. Three of its scholars, Sherienata Tam and Marlina Hadja graduated cum laude in Nursing; and Wida Hajihil was magna cum laude in Accountancy. They were among the first batch of scholars for school year 2009-2013 who graduated with honors. (Mindanao Examiner)

He began his campaign for better treatment of the people of Mindanao by the Manila government through the Mindanao Independence Movement (MIM) in the 1970s, which later became the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).” “Under Misuari’s leadership the MNLF challenged the government until the Tripoli Agreement was negotiated in 1976. Misuari and members of the MNLF were charged in connection to the deadly 20-day attack in Zamboanga city in September 2013, which left nearly 200 people dead, but in 2016, Misuari was granted a temporary suspension of his arrest and asked for his help in the peace negotiations in Mindanao.” The “The Muslim 500 – World’s 500 most influ-

ential Muslims 2020” print sells for $29.95 while the digital copy is $4.95. This publication is part of an annual series that provides a window into the movers and shakers of the Muslim world. It highlights people who are influential as Muslims, that is, people whose influence is derived from their practice of Islam or from the fact that they are Muslim. It gives valuable insight into the different ways that Muslims impact the world, and also shows the diversity of how people are living as Muslims today, according to its publisher, The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center. The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center is an independent research entity affiliated with the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought which is an international Islamic non-governmental, independent institute headquartered in Amman,

Jordan. Muslims make up 24.38% of the world’s population or about 1.84 billion. And this publication sets out to ascertain the influence some Muslims have on this community, or on behalf of the community. “Influence is any person who has the power (be it cultural, ideological, financial, political or otherwise) to make a change that will have a significant impact on the Muslim world. Note that the impact can be either positive or negative, depending on one’s point of view of course.” “The selection of people for this publication in no way means that we endorse their views; rather we are simply trying to measure their influence. The influence can be of a religious scholar directly addressing Muslims and influencing their beliefs, ideas and behaviour, or it can be of a ruler shaping

the socio-economic factors within which people

live their lives, or of artists shaping popular culture,”

the publisher said. (Mindanao Examiner)

Postpone 2022 polls due to Covid

Continued from page 1 revolutionary government and prolong his term. Members of the socalled “Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte-National Executive Coordinating Committee” (MRRD-NECC) have been campaigning for the Duterte-led revolutionary government which they claimed will help fast-track the establishment of federalism before the President’s term ends in 2022, according to a report by CNN Philippines. The group said a revolutionary government is the way to go to heal “all the ills of our society” without amending the 1987 Constitution. In November 2017, Duterte threatened to declare a revolutionary government if his political opponents tried to oust him from power. He also cited the precedent set by Corazon Aquino, who established a revolutionary government soon after leading an uprising in 1986 that ended the Marcos dictatorship. Aquino sacked all elected officials, abolished Congress and tore up the 1973 Constitution in favor of a provisional charter. She handpicked a commission to write a new Constitution, which was ratified by plebiscite in 1987. Duterte repeatedly vowed to push for a change in form of government – from presidential system to federal – and even threatened to make Mindanao a federal region if lawmakers fail to amend the Constitution to pave

the way for new federal government. He said the current unitary system has spelled so much trouble. When he was mayor in Davao City in southern Philippines, Duterte had been strongly campaigning for the establishment of a federal form of government and in many of his public appearances and speeches the President said federalism is the next best thing for the country. Last year, Duterte warned his critics that he would declare a revolutionary government and arrest his detractors if he is pushed against the wall. “I have enough problems with criminality, drugs, rebellion and all, but if you push me to the extreme, I will declare the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus and I will arrest all of you,” he said. Duterte does a ‘Peter’ Despite the MRRD-NECC campaign, Duterte rejected the actions, saying, he did not even know the people behind it. Duterte’s statement came following widespread criticisms and suspicion that he wants to prolong his power beyond 2022. “Wala akong pakialam diyan, wala akong kilala sa mga tao na ‘yan, at hindi ko iyan trabaho,” he said. Duterte’s denial of the MRRD-NECC was likened by his critics to the “Denial of Peter” (or Peter’s Denial) which refers to three acts of denial of Jesus by the Apostle Peter as described in all four Gospels of the New Testament. But despite his deni-

al, Duterte attended MRRD-NEC national convention in March 21, 2018 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City and spoke lengthily and full of expletives about his political life, among other topics, in front of thousands of supporters. The video of his speech can be accessed here: https://youtu.be/ mF_eUGDa3e0. Survey In October 2018, a nation-wide opinion poll conducted by SurveyNgBayan, showed that 60% of Filipinos would support Duterte if he decided to declare a revolutionary government to carry out his reform agenda. Considering that the question of declaring a revolutionary government had been publicly debated for some time, the pollster, presented this question once again squarely to the people nationwide: If Duterte is forced to declare a revolutionary government to fulfill his promises, would you support him? The question set in Tagalog (Kung mapilitang itatag ni DU30 ang Revolution Gov. para matupad ang mga pangako nya payag kba?) for the clear understanding of people at all levels was transmitted via SMS to 300,000 subscribers of Philippine-based mobile phones. The poll targets were selected randomly from the pollster’s databank of 182.5 million Philippine-based mobile phone numbers. The question sought Yes or No answer with the age, gender and

the location of the respondent. A total of 3,255 raw responses came by the end of the one-week period from October 1-7 and the clean response set after deduping and purging for nonsense replies came to 1,841. Among them, 1,117 said “Yes”, and 652 said “No”. The survey had a 99 percent level of confidence and a 3 percent margin of error. SurveyNgBayan had posed this question to the people nationwide previously just before Duterte took office as president on June 30, 2016, then in August 2016, after he was in office barely two months, and again in November 2017 when the public clamor for a revolutionary government was at its height. In June 2016, the support for a revolutionary government was only 43 percent, but after the general public watching their new president for some

two months, and also the activities of his opponents, the support of a Duterte-led revolutionary government climbed to 67 percent. Over a year later, in November 2017, amid a persistent clamor for a revolutionary government, 71 percent of the people tuned in favor of it. Developments since then—particularly the president stating publicly that he did not encourage such a move, and the public attention shifting towards the mid-term election due next year—the mass support for a revolutionary government has somewhat waned, but still holding at a significant 60 percent. Several reasons can be attributed to this continuing popular support for a Duterte-led revolutionary government. Among them: • The Glenn Chong revelations of problems in the electoral system. Cer-

3

tain quarters have claimed that flaws in the electoral system provide the environment for declaring a revolutionary government which can tackle this problem and install an impartial election commission. • The elite resistance to restructuring the government into a federal system. • The need to reform the judiciary to make it impossible for the monied class to manipulate the courts for its advantage, and make the judiciary function fairly for the benefit of all and deliver justice fast. SurveyNgBayan is composed of Filipino social researchers based in the Philippines and the United States, as well as other research and information service professionals. It employs a unique method of researching to measure the true pulse of public opinion. (Mindanao Examiner)

Pagadian resorts to Google Maps to promote businesses, tourism sites

PAGADIAN CITY – The local government of Pagadian City urged business owners to put their establishments on Google Maps to allow consumers easy access to their locations and make use of technology for their own advantage. Even the local tourism office and the City Council Tourism Committee chairperson, Councilor Sam Tyra Co are helping business sectors - upon the order of Mayor Sammy Co - on pinning businesses to the world’s most widely used search engine and virtual map site. Local tourism spots

are also now on Google Maps. Asenso Pagadian, the local government’s official public information site on Facebook, said: “Google Maps will be our best friend when it comes to local SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Millions of visitors use it to search for directions to local businesses, attractions, and personal addresses.” “The app is also important because people use it on their mobile devices. The mobile app, especially if the location feature is active, is a powerful marketing tool for businesses. If implement-

ed correctly, Google Maps marketing can become one of the quickest ways to bolster an establishment’s presence in local search results.” It said dozens of establishments in Pagadian have been pinned to the Google Maps. Google Maps is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, aerial photography, street maps, 360° interactive panoramic views of streets, real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle and air, or public transportation. Soldiers told to take precautions MAGUINDANAO – The Philippine military ordered security forces to take precautions during dangerous operations following the spate of bombings carried out by pro-ISIS militants in the restive province of Maguindanao. Three soldiers were wounded in a recent bomb explosion while clearing an area occupied by militants in the province. Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, commander of the anti-terror Joint Task Force Central, said the blast occurred in the village of Salman in Ampatuan town. “Troops of the 57th Infantry Battalion were conducting combat clearing operation at the time of the explosion,” he said.

“We deployed additional troops to cordon the area and establish the circumstances,” he added. The soldiers were rushed to a military hospital in Datu Odin Sinsuat town after medics provided first aid. Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command, tagged terrorists as behind the blast. Vinluan said he ordered heightened military operations in the town. “Inflicting harm to our troops is the desperate device of the weakened terrorist groups to attract attention and harbor support. Rest assured that we will heighten our security operations and stay on guard against the emerg-

ing threats in our area of operation,” he said. A roadside bomb explosion also killed one Marine and wounded four others in the village of Lipongo in Datu Hoffer town in September. The attack came barely 2 days after soldiers recovered an improvised explosive device in the village called Pimblakan in Mamasapano town, not far from Datu Hoffer. Security forces are battling several pro-ISIS groups in Maguindanao, one of 5 provinces under the troubled Muslim autonomous region, which are fighting for the establishment of ISIS caliphate in the South. Fujian donated medical face masks to Cebuanos in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic. Dino also invited Chinese businessmen to invest in Cebu which remains to be free from the African swine fever (ASF) contamination. “Luckily, Cebu has been spared from contamination of ASF and because of this, Cebu hogs are in high demand. Maybe, Fujian businessmen can explore avenues for investment in the Cebu livestock industry,” Dino said during the forum. Dino also urged foreign investors to participate in the Build, Build, Build program of the Duterte administration since the infrastructure projects can help stimu-

late the Visayan economy. He cited the challenge faced by the Visayas due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Cebu is now in control of the virus, and the numbers of positive cases have been decreasing in the entire island. Now, Cebu is the Philippines’ showcase in how to fight against Covid-19,” he said, adding, the national government is now assisting the local governments in Cebu in combating the virus. “Not only that, but the national government has dispensed funding for the augmentation of medical personnel and increasing isolation facilities in the provinces. Nonetheless, we in the Philippines have always been thankful with the support shown by the Chinese government, especially during these hard times,” Dino said. He said the pandemic is a challenge that all countries must face together. “Living with the new

normal will pose many challenges ahead, especially since the vaccine for the virus might not be accessible at the same time to the entire world population,” he said. Dino thanked the Fujian government and Beijing for the continued support to the Cebuanos and the Visayas. “Filipinos share many of their cultural traits with their Asean neighbors, including our brothers and sisters from Fujian, where most Chinese-Filipinos trace their ancestry from, me included. While things may seem difficult now, I believe that the friendship that the Fujian government has always shown to the Visayans and to Cebu will always be maintained,” he said. Mayors Sara Duterte of Davao City, Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City, and Jonas Cortes of Mandaue City also attended the event. (Carlo Lorenciana and Minerva Newman)
