Kailangan wasakin ang Marawi: Duterte Continued from page 1 masakit kasi I’m the Commander-in-Chief, marami akong sundalong namatay. We are doing our best. We did not ask for this fight. We had to destroy because it was the only way to put down the enemy. They were also taking cover in buildings kaya ganoon ang nangyari,” ani Duterte. You know, Marawi is not that easy. We started it and we are at it already because ‘yung — the clearing of explosives ang matagal. Then we have to contend with titles. Iyong mga titles ninyo diyan doble-doble. So there’s no one — there’s no title that is really very clean. As a matter of fact,
the land itself belongs to the military, the whole of it, diyan banda. Ang tawag diyan Camp Keithley. So wine-waive na ng gobyerno niyan. There is the individual titles na nago-overlap and so many things that to solve locally and the problem is about Marawi community itself, hindi sa gobyerno,” paliwanag pa ni Duterte. The money is there. Do not worry. And we will continue to spend until such time that Marawi is rebuilt to its former glory. It might take — you know, it’s not easy to do that but it might take some time before we can really reach the ideal place that you’d call home.” “In the meantime, itong mga tao na nagre-
reklamo na ang sabi there is no liberation of Marawi yet. Look, government liberated Marawi not from the people of Marawi. We do not do that and we never did it. We liberated Marawi against the terrorist, Maute pati ‘yung ISIS. Iyon ang nangyari diyan. There’s no such thing. You’re using the word liberation. We never said that it is occupied by anybody, except by the government and the peace-loving Filipinos. Of course, it is not freed by the activities of the terrorist. But if you — if you’re talking about liberation tapos na ‘yan at the expense of blood of both sides,” ani Duterte. (Mindanao Examiner)
Google offers free listing of products Continued from page 1 pandemic. With the free product listing on the Google Shopping tab, Filipino merchants can get more exposure for their products. It also means that there will be more choices of stores for shoppers when they search for certain products. Aside from free listing on the Google Shopping tab, Google Philippines has committed to continue the MSME Caravan partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The MSME Caravan was launched last February to train MSMEs to grow their businesses using digital tools such as Google My Business and Prime app as well as getting advice from experts. Google Philippines said it will continue this program online. To date, over 14,000 business owners have participated in the MSME Caravan.
“Economic recovery is a critical moment for the Philippines and Google is committed to supporting the country through the best of our technology and programs like the MSME Caravan. We will continue to empower Filipinos and our partners with the right digital knowledge and tools so the benefits of technology can be harnessed for the safe rebuilding of our economy,” Nacario said. DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez also underscored the critical role of digitalization for MSMEs to thrive amid the global health crisis. “Digitalization is one of the keys to help our MSMEs cope with the Covid-19 pandemic. This will help small businesses reap the benefits of the growing digital economy, including reaching and engaging customers while prioritizing their well-being. We’re glad our part-
nership with Google Philippines will enable us to conduct webinars and offer other resources to help small businesses digitalize at this important time,” Lopez said. Google Philippines also partnered with the Department of Tourism (DOT) to support the recovery of local tourism. The Explore tab on Google Maps will soon list DOT-recommended things to do and places to go in the country. “The revival of local tourism plays a significant role in the recovery of our economy. The strategic use of technology will help us reopen our destinations while ensuring the health and safety of Filipinos. The DOT is excited with the possibilities ahead for Google Maps in helping our tourism establishments,” said Tourism Secretary Bernadette. (Kris Crismundo)

Islamic school is foundation of good morals Continued from page 1 Philippines, saying that Islamic Schools in the country can be possible hotbeds of terrorism or to link Madrasa to terrorism, is both absurd and uncalled for,” Tan said. He added: “Indeed such statements coming from a supposedly high and responsible officer of the Armed Forces, is not one we expect from a respectable officer and a gentleman. We are certain that the good General has no ill intent.” The influential governor said during this time when the country is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, it is incumbent on everyone to be prudent and avoid tearing the threads of wounds that are yet to heal. “I cannot blame Muslims if they harbor resentment and disappointment that the specter of profiling and typecasting of people based on their faith, still lingers in the midst. To put in question an institution where most, if not all Muslim children, had their first foundation of good mor-
als based on Islam as a religion of peace, is to infer that Muslims in their primal are already branded unkindly,” he said. Tan urged Gapay to retract his statement. “I join the various groups and individuals, in calling on General Gapay with respect as Muslims are taught to be at an early age - to withdraw or retract his statement in reference to the Madrasa issue. Let us allow sobriety and goodwill to prevail,” he said. Basilan Congressman Mujiv Hataman who was former Muslim autonomous regional governor said Gapay’s statement is dangerous and unfair. “The Armed Forces should not be making general statements linking madrasa to terrorists without presenting irrefutable proof of its existence. It is dangerous and unfair, and it serves no real purpose but to unjustly put our schools in a very compromising situation,” Hataman, himself studied in madrasah, said. Hataman said these institutions only advo-
cate for peace and learning and are not breeding grounds for violent extremists and terrorists. Gapay said they are monitoring madaris and other schools in Sulu where “some sort of radicalization activities are going on.” Aside from madaris, he said terrorist groups are also recruiting you on social media. “One of the media or vehicles they are using is the social media. We have found out from some of those who surrendered
Funds for anti-Covid vaccines ready Continued from page 1 to receive the vaccine are beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program and those who received the government’s cash aid and frontliners such as the members of the police and the military. He said Russia has pledged to build a pharmaceutical facility in the country. He said Igor Khovaev, the outgoing Russian ambassador to the Philippines,
told him about Russia’s intention to invest in the Philippines. “I just had a talk with the Ambassador of Russia, the outgoing, and we had a serious one-on-one talk and they said that Russia is coming in; mayroon lang sigurong tinatapos and they would want to establish here. Gagawa sila ng planta, pharmaceutical lang naman, and ang vaccine papasok rin sila, he said.
Duterte said Russia and the Philippines have agreed for the conduct of phase three clinical trial for Russia’s Sputnik V, which was expected to take place simultaneously in the Philippines and Russia from October 2020 to March 2021. The Philippines recorded over 346,000 Covid with more than 6,000 dying from the disease. (Mindanao Examiner)

and captured that quite a number of them have been recruited and radicalized through social media,” Gapay said, adding, this could be the reason why Filipino Abu Sayyaf militant Norman Lasuca blew himself up near a military base in Sulu’s Indanan town in June last year. “We cannot imagine a Filipino really being recruited or being used as a suicide bomber. Usually, we expect that that suicide bombers would be foreign terrorists that have slipped here in our country, but we were re-
ally surprised when we had that first incident in 2019 in the person of Mr. Lasuca. It was really an eye opener for us that the effort to recruit, to radicalize, and even mold the suicide bomber out of Filipinos is really at that level,” he added. According to the Lowy Institute, an independent and nonpartisan think tank based in Sydney, Lasuca’s domestic life raises more questions as to the pathway he took to become a suicide bomber. It said Lasuca was of mixed parentage - he
lived in Sulu with his Tausug mother and Muslim convert father. He ran away from home due to his abusive father, founding succour with purported members of the Abu Sayyaf in 2014. It is unknown if he was involved in other Abu Sayyaf operations prior to the one that took his life. There was no immediate statement from former Muslim secessionist leader and now Chief Minister of the Bangsamoro autonomous region Murad Ebrahim on Gapay’s sensitive statement. (Mindanao Examiner)

Cebu re-opens tourist spots CEBU GOV. Gwendolyn Garcia said local tourists should not be given a hard time by requiring them with many documentary travel requirements and even announced that there are no age restrictions for Cebuanos who wish to visit renowned tourist spots in the province. Garcia also announced the formal re-opening of tourism in the charming and breath-taking Bantayan Island, considered as the “Paradise of the North.” She said guests are required to present their confirmed booking at hotels and resorts upon embarking at the ports. These confirmed bookings will also serve as requirement for the purchase of the two-way boat ticket in going to the island tourism sites. Tourism operators expressed their concern that some prospective guests are wary of travelling because of stringent protocols including being asked of medical certificates. The Provincial Tourism Task Force considers the two-way ticket as proof that their visit is tourism in nature and thus differentiates them from Locally Stranded Individuals (LSIs), Authorized Persons Outside of Residence (APOR), and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) or repatriated Filipinos and or seafarers. Garcia said every Cebuano, regardless of their age, can visit any tourism sites in Cebu since the province is already under Modified General Community Quarantine. Department of Tourism Regional Director Shalimar Tamano supported the governor’s statement, adding that families prefer to travel together. “Who would want to travel kun dili kuyog ang pamilya,” he said. should ask for the QR code of their confirmed tour bookings before allowing tourists to board the ferry. This is aside from the standard face mask and face shield requirement for all travelers and other health and safety protocols. The shipping companies are also required to post their scheduled trips at the tourism portal www.discover.cebu.gov.ph. so guests can easily check the availability of trips. Guests are likewise encouraged to wear personal air purifiers upon entry in resorts and accommodation establishments. Should they fail to have one, the establishments will have to provide for them by renting it out to the guests. Tourism stakeholders were elated when Garcia announced the reopening of tourism in Bantayan Island. “This is a message of gratitude Gov. Thank you very much for coming and for opening us up again and helping us with our economy,” Rissa Gigante, an accommodation operator, said and her voice cracked upon thanking the governor. Sta. Fe Mayor Ithamar Espinosa said he had second thoughts on the reopening of tourism but expressed his full trust and confidence on Garcia and the tourism task force in leading the island to a new normal in tourism. Sta. Fe was cited last year by DOT as the 7th most visited tourism site in the Philippines and the 1st in Cebu Province. “Sirado ang turismo, sirado sad ang negosyo. Wala’y mga bisita wala pu’y kita ang katawhan,” Espinosa said. Madridejos Mayor Salvador dela Fuente, meanwhile, said that while their town is far away from the influx of tourists and activities in Sta. Fe, opening the island’s tourism will greatly benefit them as well. Fe,” he said. Garcia underscored that reopening tourism is a priority as millions of Cebuanos whose income and livelihood were lost have been suffering since the start of the lockdown in March. “I don’t think anyone can accuse me now that I am making light of Covid-19. Because I have suffered through Covid-19 and I continue to suffer because I have lost two brothers. And I continue to suffer as governor when I see the suffering of the Cebuanos precisely because of these restrictions that have been imposed for Covid-19. Apan nia ko, to tell you and to sound the clarion call that Bantayan Island and the municipalities of Sta. Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos are open for the tourism business,” she said. (Vanessa L. Green mussels collected in Maqueda Bay in Jiabong, Samar. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has issued another warning against the consumption of shellfish with several areas in Eastern Visayas still infested with red tide. (PNA file photo) crab are safe to eat “provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking”, the advisory added. On October 13, a four-yearold girl died and four other children from Catbalogan City were rushed to a hospital after eating
red tide-infected shellfish. In Daram, Samar, two children died and four of their family members were hospitalized on Sept. 13 after eating red tide-infected green mussels. Also in Daram town, six people were rushed to a hospital on Oct. 10 after suffering severe PSP symptoms such as numbness, vomiting, and ab-
dominal pain. Red tide is a term used to describe a phenomenon where the water is discolored by high algal biomass or the concentration of algae. PSP occurs from ingesting bivalve shellfish (such as mussels, oysters, and clams) that contain toxins. (Sarwell Meniano)

ects in the three towns, people welcomed her with the same fervor and warmth. Women, young and old, children and men from all ages, waved colorful flaglets as she passed by. Some gave her roses, while others took photos of her using their smart phones as she passed by, some waving and carrying their welcome banner using a cartolina with handwritten greetings, while others simply just cheering and greeting her with “Maayong hapon, Gov,” and “Salamat Gov.” Her security team later scrambled to cordon her when in the middle of her caravan ride in Sulangan, Garcia stopped and disembarked from the police car to greet an elderly woman standing under a tree. It was an iconic and heart-warming scene. It was the first time the elderly woman to see and shake hands with Garcia. It was also a historic event for everyone as the events that unfolded was least expected in this time of pandemic. While government projects may have been put on a standstill because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Garcia administration continues to banner its battle cry of “Dili sulti ang pabuhaton. Buhat ang pasultion.” (Vanessa L. Almeda)
