PRESIDENT RODRIGO Duterte has threatened former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario after he alleged that China meddled in the 2016 elections that catapulted the former Davao City into the presidency. Del Rosario, citing a highly trustworthy source, said ranking Chinese officials have bragged about Beijing’s role in the Duterte presidency. “On February 22, 2019, we received infor-

Duterte threatens ex-Foreign Affairs Chief Del Rosario Continued from page 1 China are bragging that they had been able to influence the 2016 Philippine elections so that Duterte would be president. We believe that our Beijing post can easily validate this. Moreover, subsequent actions of the President lend more credence to this information,” he said. This was also reported by GMA News, which quoted Del Rosario as saying: “As early as May 15, 2018, our President proudly declared in Casiguran Bay in Aurora that Chinese President Xi Jinping has sworn to protect him from moves that will result in his removal from office.” Del Rosario said Duterte even professed his undying love for the Chinese President (Xi Jinping). He was referring to Duterte’s statement in April 2018 during a news conference in Davao before leaving for China to attend the Boao Forum for Asia where the President said: “I just simply love Xi Jinping. He understood, he understands my problem and he is willing to help.” “It is certainly disturbing to see our President, who should be looking after his own people, relying on a foreign leader for his security of tenure as President. Moreover, such foreign leader represents an aggressor that is openly and illegally occupying land and waters that belong to the Filipino people,” Del Rosario said, calling Duterte’s administration a “failure of leadership.” GMA News reported that since 2016, Del Rosario lamented that the country’s fight for the
West Philippine Sea “has lost momentum as Duterte decided to set aside the Award in favor of Beijing’s promise of economic benefits.” It said Del Rosario criticized Duterte’s appeasement policy that appears to yield too much to China, saying such action is a betrayal of the Constitution, which mandates him to secure the sovereignty of the State and the integrity of the national territory. “With less than a year left until the end of President Duterte’s term in June 2022, his record of asserting the rights of Filipinos in the West Philippine Sea has been abysmal,” the television network quoted Del Rosario as saying. “As President Duterte himself admitted in his State of the Nation Address in 2020 regarding the Chinese presence in the West Philippine Sea: “Talagang inutil ako dyan, walang magawa.” Del Rosario said: “My fellow countrymen, this admission speak volumes. Is it not about time for Filipinos to reject this man and what he represents?” Gago Ka! Duterte strongly denied the allegations and boasted that 16 million people had voted for him. “You know, we are still investigating it. But you know, ikaw Albert --- Alberto, ‘pag nasilip ko lang mayroon ka, I will charge you for sa... Marami akong idedemanda sa’yo. Ako na... I’m not --- I have not, for the life of me, sued anybody libel or anything during my 23 years, four years as congressman tapos vice mayor hanggang Presidente. Pero ikaw ang hahabulin ko kasi ikaw ang
nag-transmit sa message.” “You are in olden times, kung at war lang tayo sana, you are guilty of treason. At you know, ang mabigat sa iyo, ikaw ‘yung nag-transmit and, I said, that is treason. Sixteen million mabili mo? Ang aking majority is six million over. Lahat 16 million. Sixteen million plus voted. Six million of that was my majority over your friend,” Duterte said. The President even went further in his verbal attacks - broadcast live on state television - on the 81-year old statesman. “ Kaya ikaw pag... Tingnan mo ‘yung mukha mo. Are you a Filipino? Nagdududa ako. I want to see you personally” “Where can I meet you? Subukan mo. Try conveying to me the message where I can find you at pupuntahan kita. Hindi ako magdala ng security, ako lang. Ibuhos ko ‘yang kape sa mukha mo. Nasaan ka ba ngayon kasi gusto kitang puntahan? Saan ba bahay mo? Katukin kita. Ako lang mag-isa, huwag kang matakot. Hindi ako sanay. You know, I was born alone in this world so I will leave alone,” Duterte said. (Mindanao Examiner)
“I urge the DILG and the PNP to implement the existing protocols with greater urgency and necessity. It is only by imposing these restrictions that we can fight the threat of Delta variant. Now, remember that the reason why the security forces of the government are very strict is not because they want to be strict and they want to make it hard for the people move rather they are strict because they want to protect the country from a very contagious disease and maybe cause more deaths more than the lives that we lost in the past,” ani Duterte. “Meanwhile, the latest Pulse Asia survey reported similar data with 43 percent respondents willing to get the vaccine. Alam mo I don’t want to be ‘yung bunganga ko pero itong mga buang na ito, they not only endanger themselves, their family, but everybody they come in contact with. And everything that they touch or hold mag-iwan sila ng virus, they can spread and they called the spreader because they spread with more audacity, ika nga,” dagdag pa ni Duterte.
“That should give us a, put us in grave concern because ang sabi na nga na it is aggressive, vicious, and more virulent, and can cause death faster than the Covid-19. So iyan ho ang worry natin. According to our local health officials, the Delta variant is believed to be 60 percent more transmissible than the Alpha variant,” wika ng Pangulo. “We may need to re-impose stricter restrictions to avoid mass gathering and prevent super spreader events. Now, it is not only Indonesia, tinamaan ulit ang Korea at Taiwan. Sila ‘yung nag-lockdown kasi pumasok nga itong variant na Delta. I hope that our existing infrastructure in dealing with the problem of Covid-19 can cope up depende kung the vaccines for Covid-19 can be as effective in dealing with the virus Delta,” paliwanag pa ni Duterte.
“I ask national and local quarters to heighten their vaccine information and education campaign to further increase vaccines. Alam mo ‘yung the importance of vaccines --- ‘yang ‘yung word na “the importance of vaccines” you must get the vaccine or you die. Ilang beses na ‘yan na sinasabi, many times. So kung ayaw talaga ninyong maniwala eh ‘di huwag na lang kayong lumabas ng bahay para wala kayong mahawa.” “At kung ganyan ang, if that is your state of mind, actually to me you are anti-social, para kang galit sa tao. You are antisocial because in face of the danger confronting you and knowing fully well that it is really dangerous, you choose the path of this resistance by just not getting the vaccine at all,” ani Duterte. U.S. donates 3.2 million doses of J&J vaccines
A U.S. Embassy photo shows the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines donated by Washington to the Philippines through the COVAX facility. Continued from page 1 access to vaccines directed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and the World Health Organization. The Philippines has previously received more than 7 million vaccine doses through the COVAX. The United States is the largest monetary contributor to Gavi, having already donated over P100 billion ($2 billion) to the Alliance.
This is the first time the Philippines has received the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine which is widely used in the United States, according to U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires John Law. “This U.S. donation of vaccines from our domestic supply to the Philippines, our oldest treaty ally in Asia, demonstrates our close and abiding relationship, and how important this partnership is to us .This one-
shot, easy to store vaccine will protect millions of lives across the country,” Law said, adding the United States has worked closely with Philippine stakeholders throughout the pandemic to protect public health and support the local response to Covid-19. To date, total U.S. government Covid-19 assistance to the Philippines amounts to over P1.38 billion ($27.5 million). (Rhoderick Beñez)
Continued from page 1 cities at City Hall. Carpio and her team, together with House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and Davao Oriental Governor Claude Bautista travelled all the way to Zamboanga City for the sisterhood accord. Carpio and Climaco shared their moments together, reminiscing the time they both had been invited last year by Washington to attend the “Strong Cities, Strong Partnerships: A Comprehensive Approach to Preventing Terrorism in Southeast Asia” under the auspices of the International Visitor Leadership Program of the U.S. Department of State. The signing of the sisterhood accord on July 15 came six years after Climaco and then Davao City Mayor and now President Rodrigo Duterte pledged to the agreement. The accord intends to create and fortify an open communicative atmosphere to induce a heightened exchange of ideas, particularly in the fields of tourism and culture, agriculture and trade and commerce. The event was limited to representatives and assistants of both Climaco and Carpio due to the strict health protocols in Zamboanga City. “Individually, our two cities are strong, but we are stronger when we are together,” Carpio told Climaco. The Zamboanga mayor has all praises too for Carpio, citing her assistance to Zamboanga’s Covid-19 efforts, saying “Davao has been a Sister City, always ready to help and assist Zamboanga, even before the sisterhood pact was formalized.” “In God’s perfect timing, we finally signed the sisterhood agreement which began in the time of Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte when Zamboanga City officials were invited to Davao. It has been close to 6 years. Mayor Sara has been helping Zamboanga City since the early part of the pandemic through the provision of testing equipment such as
the RT-PCR machines were donated to the Zamboanga City Medical Center and the City Government,” Climaco said. “Our technologists were sent to RITM (Research Institute for Tropical Medicine) Davao for training and have passed the proficiency for the operation our own City Modular Laboratory. Mayor Sara has facilitated a mercy mission by sending a team of Davao burn specialists and experts in psycho-social debriefing to assist the C-130 (crash) victims from Jolo. Victims with severe burns were transferred to Davao for further treatment. Davao social workers are in Zamboanga City to provide needed therapy to the remaining crash victims,” she added. Climaco also recalled her U.S. trip with Carpio and said “I and Mayor Sara have been blessed to be part of the U.S. Government’s International Visitors Leadership Program prior to pandemic and as a result, we continue to respond to security and health and learn from each other to respond to crisis and emergencies. Davao’s (emergency hotline) 911 is a template for Zamboanga City and other local governments in the country. We are learning from each other in responding to man-made and natural disasters. With two daughters of Mindanao
serving our Cities of Davao and Zamboanga, we carry on our Fathers’ dedication of public service,” the mayor said. During Carpio’s stay, she and Climaco along with Velaso and Bautista visited the Fort Pilar Shrine and the newly rehabilitated R.T. Lim Boulevard to showcase their historical value and significance to Zamboanga City. They also visited the soldiers wounded in the plane crash at the Zamboanga City Medical Center and spoke to them. The Chief of Hospital, Dr. Afdal Kunting assisted the two influential mayors. Before leaving Zamboanga, Carpio thanked Climaco for the warm reception and hospitality and invited her to visit Davao City again. Climaco also praised Carpio for her simplicity, kindness, and humility. The sisterhood agreement is the 4th for Zamboanga City under the Climaco administration. The other sister cities are Guigang in China which was signed on October 24, 2016; Puerto Princesa City signed on October 11, 2018 and Isabela City in Basilan province on October 11, 2017. Zamboanga City is also set to sign similar agreements with Dezhou City in China and Manado City in Indonesia. (Marilou Cablinda)

Over 180 Bukidnon cyclists join ‘Bike for Peace’
Bukidnon’s Cabanglasan town Mayor Renante Inocando and Bukidnon Police Director Colonel Jun Mark Lagare lead 184 bikers on a 50-kilometer trip as a show of solidarity and indignation against the atrocities of the communist rebel group New People’s Army. (BGE) BUKIDNON – More than 180 cyclists from various towns and cities in Bukidnon province joined a 50-kilometer trip as a show of solidarity and indignation against the atrocities of the communist rebel group New People’s Army (NPA). The unity bike ride was also a call for justice for the death of national football athlete Kieth Absalon, 32; and his cousin Nolven, 40; who were killed in a roadside bombing by the NPA in Masbate City in June. Nolven’s 16-year-old son who was with the duo was injured. Cabanglasan town Mayor Renante Inocando and Provincial Police Director Colonel Jun Mark Lagare led the 184 cyclists on the trip, exemplifying the need for community participation for peace. The bikers travelled
from Cabanglasan to Malaybalay, passing along seven villages as residents and spectators flashed peace signs while waving posters condemning the communist rebels for the twin murders in Masbate. “Personally, I enjoy biking with my children. As bikers—as civilians—the death of our fellow riders in Masbate should never have happened. Their goal would have been very simple. They had a good day riding their bikes around with their buddies. However, when a terrorist-planted device burst, the bikers were killed,” Inocando said. The mayor explained that the “Sikad Alang sa Hustisya ug Kalinaw was conceived in an effort to stir people’s awareness of the brutalities of the NPA and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). In a short ceremony
before the bikers got off the grounds, former rebel Jennel Cabugsa recounted her pains as a witness of CPPNPA’s cruelties. “We gather here to denounce the NPA’s brutality. I strongly condemn the murder of the Absalons in Masbate. Terrorists felt that they would no longer be able to recruit kids, particularly those interested in sports. So, NPAs did kill the students in order to instil fear among young people’s groups,” she said. Recognizing the former rebel’s gory details, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency Regional Director Manuel Ordoña said the parents of Absalon only hoped that his death would serve as an eye-opener for the public that the communist groups will murder even innocent people to pursue its violent campaign. (RLRB)
OZAMIZ CITY – Nearly 300 couples took part in the mass wedding here which coincided with the city’s 73rd Charter anniversary celebration. Dubbed as “Kasalan ng Bayan 4.0,” the event held recently at the Ozamiz City National High School Mini Gym, was the fourth mass wedding solemnized by Mayor Sancho Fernando Oaminal. Each couple also received a wedding cake, giveaways, P1,000 gift check, P10,000 cash from the local government and another P5,000 cash from Rep. Henry Oaminal. “Kamo magkahiusa ug kung unsa man gani ang mga challenges, mga kalisod,
mga problema nga muabot sa inyong kinabuhi dili man gyud na mawala naay panag-away, paglalis ug aduna’y sitwasyon nga lain-lain ang inyong opinion, hunahuna pero hinumdumi ninyo nga karong adlawa inyong i-commit ang inyong kaugalingon sa inyong partner and whatever happens always remember that you can always do more together than separately,” the mayor said. While the lawmaker said the exchange of vows legitimized the union of couples – many of them have been living together for years and have children. “Make your relationship not useless, make your love endless and
not useless, ang inyong panaghigugmaay labi na karon nga krisis, nga kamo legal na kinahanglan nga wala’y katapusan ika nga,” he said, adding, the official marriage of the parents would greatly benefit their children. Couple Felipe and Kim Peja thanked the City Government for providing all of them free wedding and assistance for their family. Oaminal has legitimized the union of more than 600 couples since the start of his administration. The Kasalan ng Bayan is an annual activity of the local government offered to the less privileged unwed couples who are local residents. (SMRN)

HEALTH
Pasma at Pasmado ba? Baka Arthritis, Pagod, Ibang Sakit.
Barangay, nadale ng diarrhea
Ni Dr. Willie T. Ong
A
Halimbawa: 1. Arthritis. Osteoarthritis at Rheumatoid Arthritis.
3. 4. Cebu attracts European companies
A photo shows the Cebu Business Park where multinational companies are holding offices and regional headquarters. European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines president Lars Wittig says Cebu is among the preferred destinations for many European companies looking to expand their business operations. (Photo contributed by Jun Nagac) CEBU CITY – The European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) marked an impressive growth of up to 25% of its membership since its first regional office in Cebu opened in 1990. Cebu is among the preferred destinations for many European companies looking to expand

their business operations. Lars Wittig, the ECCP president, said Cebu has taken measures to adapt to the new normal to bring back business and commerce here amid the) pandemic. “New normal arrived early in Cebu and it shows in the sheer number of companies organizing behind ECCP,” he said. Wittig said Cebu, as
the commercial capital of Visayas, is rich in business and investment potentials and ECCP started strongly in the region with most members coming from the creative industries such as furniture, fashion, and accessories. These industries, he said, have contributed significantly to export and international trade by means of rep-

resentation and participation. ECCP-Cebu members currently come from more diverse sectors including tourism, real estate, information communications technology-business process management-knowledge and process management, food and beverage, manufacturing, and creative industries, among others, Wittig said. “With a very supportive local government and vast profile of office spaces designed to accommodate operational requirements, Cebu has indeed emerged as one of the key cities for European companies to do business in,” he said. Wittig said he met with the ECCP Cebu Business Council last month to discuss industry updates, current status, and action plan to address current challenges, best practices, and possible synergies. ECCP Cebu has created a name for itself other than a regional office through its advocacy ini-

tiatives, working towards actionable solutions for a better business environment for both European and Filipino companies alike in the region. In 2019, ECCP encouraged the government to continue expanding its infrastructure development and work closely with the private sector to expedite the rollout of flagship projects. The ECCP Cebu Tourism Committee was also launched in the same year to cater to the growing travel, hospitality, and tourism sectors in the region. With Covid-19 adversely affecting the tourism sector, the committee stood at the forefront of finding solutions for the sector to recuperate through webinars and roundtable discussions with the Department of Tourism, Department of the Interior and Local Government and local governments. “Amid the global pandemic, the Chamber remained focused on

providing support to its partners and members by keeping them up to date on the hospitality trend not only in the Philippines but in different parts of the world,” ECCP tourism committee chair Dottie Cronin said. ECCP executive director Florian Gottein also said there are more in store for Cebu as ECCP remains committed to representing the Philippine-European business community in the region. “We recently partnered with a company who will open a 50-room lagoon resort in one of the LGUs in the province. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the local government, public and private sector that warmly welcomed our presence in 1990 and have continued to support us all the way through,” Gottein said. ECCP Cebu said it will be hosting several events in the coming months. (Minerva Newman)
