Will Zamboanga revert to ECQ?

‘Spike in Covid-19 cases alarms officials’ Continued from page 1 Zamboanga under the General Community Quarantine until the end of the month. But with dozens of cases daily, the IATFMEID may change Zam-

boanga’s quarantine classification to allow the local government to impose stricter measures or granular lockdown in areas where there are high numbers of Covid-19 cases, and prevent the spread

of the deadly respiratory disease. The spike in infections in the community are largely blamed to the Delta variant of the Covid-19 and the complacency of residents who

Beng praises Duterte, DSWD pro-poor program

Mayor Beng Climaco speaks to the graduates of the DSWD’s pro-poor program. She also thanked President Duterte and DSWD for extending program to the poor. (Bong Serondo) MAYOR BENG Climaco thanked President Duterte and the Department of Social Welfare and Development Office (DSWD) for the recent rollout of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) which benefited mostly poor families here. Climaco, who graced the “CS 26 graduation” ceremony of the house-

hold-beneficiaries held at the Cabatangan covered court, praised the government’s pro-poor program for the assistance given to local residents though the 4Ps. She also assured the continuing support of her administration to sustain the program as this is also one of her top priorities. The DSWD has been im-

plementing the 4Ps, the country’s flagship poverty alleviation program, since its inception in 2008. Pursuant to Republic Act 11310 or the 4Ps Law, the beneficiaries will subsequently be adopted by the local government. The law institutionalizes 4Ps as the national anti-poverty reduction strategy and human capital investment program that provides conditional cash transfer to poor households for a maximum of 7 years. The law also includes provisions that ensure that the 4Ps beneficiaries can transition out of poverty within the 7-year period. The graduation ceremony was attended by DSWD Assistant Regional Director for Operations, Fatima Caminan; City Social Welfare Officer Socorro Rojas and other officials. (Zamboanga Post)

continue to violate public health protocols despite repeated warnings from the local government and the City Health Office. Zamboanga City now has over 700 active Covid-19 cases and the number continues to increase. City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite also noted that Covid-19 has already affected even the younger population with deadly consequences. “Ta mira tamen kita at this time, tiene kita maga younger population also getting infected. We have compared our data from last year (when the original virus was detected) with the present situation, ahora tiene kita maga less than 15 years-old who died from Covid, so that we have to strictly follow the minimum health standards.” “Let us protect ourselves, keep our family and our loved ones especially children and our senior citizens protected. Please take care,” Miravite said. Mayor Beng Climaco, who chairs the local Covid-19 task force, has repeatedly called on residents to strictly follow the health protocols as the local government continues its massive vaccination program to be able to achieve herd immunity or inoculate at least 70% of Zamboanga’s almost or more than one million population. She also issued an executive order making

it mandatory for all travellers - whether they are fully vaccinated or not entering Zamboanga to present their negative RTPCR test result, especially now that Delta variant is the dominant variant not only in the country, but around the world. The Delta variant was first detected in India, but quickly spread in more than 130 countries. Climaco ordered a strict border control and implementation of the health protocols in Zamboanga. She said travellers must have negative Covid-19 test results, whether by Saliva RT-PCR test or nasopharyngeal RT-PCR test, before they enter Zamboanga. She previously issued Executive Order 651-2021 that mandates all inbound passengers, whether APOR (Authorized Persons Outside Residence) or private individuals, regardless of reason or purpose of entry, including transit travellers to present negative RT-PCR test result within 5 days from date of specimen collection and their valid identification cards before they can enter Zamboanga City which is near the provinces of Basilan, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte where Covid-19 cases are high. The mayor said these are temporary measures designed to curb the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in order to promote the health and safety of the

general welfare of the citizens. The Department of Health said that the National Capital Region (NCR) is now under Alert Level 4 due to the huge number of active Covid-19 cases there. The NCR is currently at high-risk case classification while intensive care utilization is also under high risk classification. Areas under Alert Level 4, the second highest alert level, show high and increasing case counts with total Covid-19 bed and intensive care beds at increasing utilization rates. “During this time, we must ramp-up active case finding, conduct riskbased testing using RTPCR, and fast track vaccination among high-risk groups. There will also be intensified granular lockdowns from barangay down to the household level to contain transmission,” said DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire. “We also call on everyone to continuously observe the minimum public health standards and consciously avoid these three C’s that pose higher risk of Covid-19 transmission when all are present in your activities such as crowded places and closed-contact settings where physical distancing may not be observed, and people have face-to-face interaction, and closed spaces with poor ventilation,” she added. (Zamboanga Post)

Zambo’s poor, workers given aid Continued from page 1 promised to do everything to uplift the welfare of the Zamboangueños. The mayor, assisted by social workers and personnel from the City Treasurer’s Office, distributed cash assistance to the beneficiaries of the local government’s pro-poor

programs in different barangays. “El ayuda na tiempo de pandemia ta continua como parte del Covid-19 rehabilitation program del gobierno local,” she said. Councilors Pinpin Pareja, Al Jihan Edding, El King Omaga and Rep. Jawo Jimenes also accom-

panied the mayor in the distribution of financial aid to the poor and also to the barangay workers. Zamboangueños have praised Climaco’s assistance and thanked her for always putting their welfare on top of her priorities. (Zamboanga Post)

May 20.9 milyong Pili-

SINCE THE September 9, 2013 attack right in the heart of our La Bella Zamboanga by some 500 heavily-armed Moro National Liberation Front members under Nur Misuari, this peace-loving and highly-urbanized City in Mindanao has been placed under continuous heightened alert. Mayor Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco-Salazar deeply explained in a television interview during the solemn observance of its 8th year anniversary of the so-called Zamboanga Siege, that “the alert level of Zamboanga City will always be heightened because we need to make sure that our security forces are able to be preventive or proactive. Otherwise, if we lower our guards, or the alert level, the security forces might be lax or complacent, as well.” Ergo, our Chief Executive has never watered-down her continuous tight security policy for our City since that bloody and treacherous attack staged by the Moro rebels traumatized the whole Zamboanga populace and caught all its people with their pants down. She heaped praises for her brave stance and also lauded the extraordinary efforts shared by the different Greek-lettered fraternities in our La Bella, as they see to it that their own different barangays, or villages where they live are more in safe hands now than ever before since terror struck the City back in those menacing days eight years ago. The Mayor stressed that her incumbent administration has never stopped engaging with the police, the military and the force multipliers, to include the barangay tanods, so that all of them will exert their utmost efforts at securing the safety and protection of their own communities. She was all cognizant of the huge help extended up to now by all the local fraternities, in so far as security rampup in our City, is concerned. “I cannot mention all of these fraternities, but I know they are helping in so many ways the people and the communities. They have dialogued with the police, and have even volunteered to ease the burden of the people by helping us in securing, and even in coping with the

pandemic,” she extolled. “We have to engage the community, the fraternities, because they are very important to us in many ways,” the Mayor underlined further and she profoundly noted that the people in the barangays would even volunteer themselves in keeping law and order in their respective communities. Now, let’s see its cons, as critics cried out: “Whatever happens to our City Government’s much-ballyhooed legal battle vs. these rogue MNLF fighters under their Chieftain Nur Misuari for grave charges of alleged rebellion and insurrection?” asked a dismayed folk who claimed as amongst the victims of Zamboanga Siege. The appalling turn of events in its case vs. the offenders of such heinous crimes came when Davao strongman President Rodrigo Duterte took up the cudgels for and on behalf of Misuari whom he considered as his personal friend. He even invited Misuari to speak in Malacanang and allowed him to pour out his heart to express his grievances against the government. My gosh! How lucky he could be, and even got tenfold luckier when President Duterte appointed the former rebel chieftain as his special envoy to the Middle East countries. The President likewise provided him free shelter in Davao City as his home in Zamboanga City has been kept under close guarding by the military since becoming the “Most Wanted Person” in our La Bella Zamboanga, thus declared a persona non-grata, for his supposed grievous crimes against humanity in the infamous “Zamboanga Siege. The attack resulted in the loss of over 200 lives and widespread destruction of at least 6 urban barangays which were flattened to the ground due to intense fighting between the attackers and security forces during the 21-day street battle. Question: What’s the stern warning of God to man about never to pass any judgment on his fellowmen? Answer: “Do not judge others and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.” (Matthew 7: 1-2) jayfeliciano2@yahoo.com

School projects praised!

E

DUCATION AND barangay officials lauded the local government and praised Mayor Beng Climaco for the three climate-resilient school buildings inaugurated in Tetuan, Canelar and Pasobolong the past weeks.

Mayor Beng Climaco during the inauguration of the new four-storey building at the Zamboanga City High School in Barangay Tetuan. (Bong Serondo)

Climaco led local government officials in the handover of the newly-constructed school buildings and she vowed to continue providing more infrastructure projects to different barangays as part of her administration’s priorities in Security, Health and Education. In Tetuan, the mayor was joined and assisted by Rep. Jawo Jimenez and Councilor Pinpin Pareja, among other officials, including Walmart Atilano, the barangay chairman, in the inauguration of the four-storey, 20-classroom building at the Zamboanga City High School. Climaco also led the handover of the new school buildings at Canelar Elementary School and Pasobolong Elementary

School. All the ceremonies were also attended by faculty members who thanked the mayor for continuously prioritizing education and other literacy programs that benefit the students. Jimenez and Pareja, including Councilor Al Jihan Edding were also at the turned over ceremony of the newly-constructed twostorey, eight-classroom building at the Pasobolong Elementary School. Notably, it was only during Climaco’s administration that the new schools have no initials of the mayor unlike in the previous administration of Mayor Celso Lobregat where virtually all window grills had CL welded on it and roofs painted with “Adelante Zamboanga.” But in Climaco’s administration, only

SC picks Zambo as Bar Exam venue THE LOCAL government thanked the Supreme Court for choosing Zamboanga City as one of the venues for the Bar Examinations set in November this year. The Bar Examination is the professional licensure examination for lawyers and is exclusively administered by the Supreme Court through the Supreme Court Bar Examination Committee. The rule limits to five the number of times a candidate may take the Bar exams. The rule disqualifies a candidate after failing in three examinations. However, he is permitted to take fourth and fifth examinations if he successfully completes a oneyear refresher course for each examination. Mayor Beng Climaco has met with the personnel from the Supreme Court headed by Atty. Jul Ahmed Gaspar accompanied by Executive Judge Peter Eisma and other local court officials to discuss the needed preparations for the conduct of the Bar Examinations this November to be held at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The other venues of the Bar Examinations are the Ateneo de Manila University; Manila Adventist College; SLU

“THE LORD GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us appear together. Who disputes my right? Let that man confront me. See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong?” I dedicate this First Reading to all who suffer like me from the hands of ruthless enemies, whose victory is to see us crushed. Kapit sa Panginoon! We entrust unto God all our burdens who carried the weight of our sins to victory! Life is never easy and there will be obstacles along the way. In the Gospel, Fr. Coco Parilla, S.J., spoke about “Redemptive Suffering.” We offer our sufferings for love of Jesus as we share in the sufferings of others. Jesus, who was innocent, “suffered, crucified, died, and was buried,” as mentioned in Fr. Jet Villarin’s S.J., Homily. To be a follower of Jesus entails embracing our cross. It also means

following Jesus who suffered for us. Cuncilor Pinpin Pareja invited me to Talisayan where the Eagles chapter and DOH had operation “Tuli.” As I eagerly thanked Dr. Josh Brillantes, our DOH 9 regional director, who had time to do surgery amidst our Pandemic battle. I focused on a boy being circumcised. He was about 10. He started trembling in pain and fear and his eyes teary. Trying to follow Covid Protocols, I did what any mother would do, I held his hands as Pinpin, like a big sister, assured him the procedure was over. In our lives, we can be myopic and focus only on our problems. But Jesus teaches us to share in the sufferings of others as we unite these with Jesus who suffered for us. “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.” (MBC)

the “love for Zamboanga City” - I love ZC - are emblazoned in many infrastructure projects. Education previously praised Climaco and thanked her for donating 32 printing and digital hubs intended for different schools in Zamboanga City to help teachers cope with the demands of mass production of printed materials and modules needed for “blended learning” which combines both traditional classroom and online classes or courses. Education officials led by Dr. Victoria Mangaser praised the mayor for the continuing and overwhelming support the local government has provided them since becoming mayor. Climaco is now on her third and last term. The mayor led the turnover of the fully air-conditioned printing and digital hubs to Mangaser. The mayor was assisted by Jimenez and City Council members El King Omaga and Kim Elago. The printing and digital hubs are complete with Acer Veriton S desktops which provide high reliability and a long lifespan due to its 100% solid capacitor and Acer V7 Series computer monitors that provide professional performance with a 4K resolution screen. All the hubs also come with Risograph, a brand of digital duplicators manufactured by the Riso Kagaku Corporation that are designed mainly for high-volume photocopying and printing. Just recently, the mayor also turned over the newly-constructed two-storey barangay hall to the officials of Tolosa and Barangay Ayala. The buildings have a brick façade and stainless hand rails and ramp for people with disabilities. The two buildings also have their own covered terrace in the front. The mayor said the new barangay hall is the commitment of her administration to the barangays and its residents. (Zamboanga Post)
