Covid cases shoot up! ‘Zambo now has over 2,000 infections’

Continued from page 1 Putik, Guiwan, Calarian, Talon-Talon, Ayala, San Roque, Tugbungan, Pasonanca, Divisoria, Canelar, Mercedes, Baliwasan, Lunzuran, San Jose Gusu, Vitali, Malagutay and Culianan. And with the spike in Covid-19 cases, the local government said the Sunday lockdown will continue until October 31 allowing public and government offices, including business owners to disinfect their establishments. Government hospitals are also full of patients, including doctors who contracted the disease from non-Covid wards. Despite the increasing number of active Covid-19 cases, the national government’s Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Infectious

Diseases (IATF-MEID) has placed Zamboanga under the General Community Quarantine until the end of the month. The spike in infections in the community are largely blamed to the Delta variant of the Covid-19 and the complacency of residents who continue to violate public health protocols despite repeated warnings from the local government and the City Health Office. City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite also noted that Covid-19 has already affected even the younger population with deadly consequences. “We are now seeing the younger population also getting infected. We have compared our data from last year (when the original virus was detected) with the present situation, now we have

under 15-years old who died from Covid. We have to strictly follow the minimum health standards. Let us protect ourselves, keep our family and our loved ones especially children and our senior citizens protected. Please take care,” Miravite said. One doctor, who asked not to be named, said the Covid-19 wards at the Zamboanga City Medical Center are full. He said even some doctors have been infected with the virus after being exposed to relatives or family members of patients in non-Covid wards. “The (Covid-19) wards are full and even doctors are getting sick and some of them who have comorbidities are now undergoing dialysis. They got the virus from watchers of patients in non-Covid wards. You know, patients being

admitted undergo Covid testing, but now their watchers who turned out to be positive for Covid, although asymptomatic, spread the virus to some doctors and maybe other people at the hospital,” he told the Zamboanga Post. “This is a very dangerous time. Health authorities should have placed Zamboanga City under Enhanced Community Quarantine to immediately address the spike in Covid-19 cases which is largely blamed on the Delta variant (of the new Coronavirus). Now is the time to declare ECQ,” he added. The Delta variant was first detected in India, but quickly spread in more than 130 countries. Mayor Beng Climaco, who chairs the local Covid-19 task force, has repeatedly called on resi-

dents to strictly follow the health protocols as the local government continues its massive vaccination program to be able to achieve herd immunity or inoculate at least 70% of Zamboanga’s almost or more than one million population. Climaco also issued an executive order making it mandatory for all travellers - whether they are fully vaccinated or not - entering Zamboanga to present their negative RTPCR test results, especially now that Delta variant is the dominant variant in the country. The Department of Health also urged the public to strictly follow the health protocols. “During this time, we must ramp-up active case finding, conduct riskbased testing using RT-

PCR, and fast track vaccination among high-risk groups. There will also be intensified granular lockdowns from barangay down to the household level to contain transmission,” said DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire. “We also call on everyone to continuously observe the minimum public health standards and consciously avoid these three C’s that pose higher risk of Covid-19 transmission when all are present in your activities such as crowded places and closed-contact settings where physical distancing may not be observed, and people have face-to-face interaction, and closed spaces with poor ventilation,” she added. Continued from page 1 for the general population, including children ages 12-17 years old. “We are preparing for this and we are awaiting guidelines from the DOH,” Miravite said, adding, they will use the data from the National Immunization Program as reference for the inoculation of children. “Everything is still being finalized.” The vaccination of the general population or those who do not belong in any of the vaccination priority groups set by the DOH has been approved by President Duterte last month. This was also confirmed by Duterte’s spokesman, Harry Roque, who said the government expects to receive a big supply of Covid-19 vaccines this month. “Ito po’y inaprubahan ng Pangulo sang-ayon po sa advice ni Vaccine Czar Carlito Galvez, at magsisimula na rin po ang ating pagbabakuna ng ating mga Kabataan. Ang pinaghahandaan po natin yung masterlisting pa lang naman. Pag meron na po tayong masterlist antayin po natin ang anunsyo kung sino ang mauuna,” Roque said. He assured though that while the general population and children will be added to those who can get jabbed with a Covid-19 vaccine, those

who belong to Priority Groups A1 to A3 will not lose their prioritization. Roque was referring to the health workers, senior citizens and those with comorbidities. “Magkakaroon po tayo ng express lane para sa kanila. Pero ang importante lang, dahil nandyan na po ang supply, at ang naging problema naman natin dati ay kakulangan ng supply, ngayong maraming supply eh sisimulan na po natin ang bakunahan ng general population,” he said. The government and the DOH continue to encourage the public to get inoculated against the deadly respiratory disease, but the supplies of Covid-19 vaccines are lacking. Across the country, residents are flocking to vaccination sites, but many of those who registered with health centers or through the Internet have not received any schedule for their inoculation. Some have waited for months, but until now did not get any reply from the government. And others had claimed unequal distribution of the vaccines or favoritism, nepotism and undue influence and even bribery in the mass vaccination program. And many provinces and cities have not re-

ceived its equal share of the vaccines and some even got more than what others were given. The Philippines has over 110 million population and is lagging behind some Southeast Asian countries in vaccine procurement. According to a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, with vaccines being approved for use in different parts of the globe, the scale and complexity of their manufacture, allocation and distribution globally will be unprecedented. It said this will also present corruption risks that may threaten vital public health goals. These risks include the entry of substandard and falsified vaccines into markets, theft of vaccines within the distribution systems, leakages in emergency funding designated for the development and distribution of vaccines, nepotism, favoritism, and corrupted procurement systems. “These corruption risks must be identified and mitigated by public institutions to help advance access to safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines by the population, including the most vulnerable and marginalized groups,” it said. Hospitals struggle with Covid cases, lack of oxygen supplies

Expand Covid vaccination program to manage pandemic Continued from page 1 (DOH) Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the government needs to continuously increase Covid-19 primary series vaccination coverage across the country and ramp up vaccination among senior citizens and persons with underlying conditions. “We have to prioritize vaccinating those who have not yet received a single dose of Covid-19 vaccines, especially in our provinces and other farflung areas. Because these areas typically have lower health care capacity, it becomes more important that the people are protected from severe and critical Covid-19,” Ver-

geire said. “And of course, we have to make sure that 100% of high-risk groups in our regions have received the primary series. If they remain unvaccinated, they won’t get the needed additional protection against severe Covid-19. This will lead to hospitalizations and overwhelm our health system, and consequently, lifting of restrictions will be delayed,” she added. Vergeire said the DOH is also planning for the eventual provision of booster doses, which will continue to prioritize the health care workers and those with comorbidities, however, such rollout will only be approved once

conclusive evidence of additional protection is available. “There are many senior citizens and people with underlying conditions who have not yet received a primary vaccination series. Let us focus on protecting them first and the rest of the population, as the national government expands its vaccination program,” Vergeire said. President Rodrigo Duterte has previously thumbed down proposals to rollout vaccine boosters in the country as the government struggles to acquire Covid-19 vaccines. He also blamed rich countries for cornering Covid-19 vaccines. (Zamboanga Post)

Over 332,000 people now vaccinated in Zambo Continued from page 1 nearly one million residents. Climaco vowed to aggressively vaccinate more people, especially now that Zamboanga has recorded a surge in active Covid-19 cases due to the Delta variant that is now the dominant variant of the new coronavirus. Just recently, the local government received over 45,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine from the British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The delivery of the vaccine

was part of a $2 million (or roughly P100 million) deal that Climaco signed with AstraZeneca early this year. The initial P200 million for the purchase of the vaccines are included in the P4.38-billion 2021 Executive Budget of the local government, according to Climaco, who is also a member of the Committee on Vaccine Availment of the League of Cities of the Philippines. Some 36,42o additional doses are also expected to arrive soon. The latest shipment

was the second since July this year after AstraZeneca delivered some 11,800 doses of Covid-19 vaccines purchased by the Climaco administration. The mayor said the local government’s vaccination program will cover almost 700,000 residents or 70% of the projected 2021 population of 992,423 inhabitants. Zamboanga is one of the first cities that entered into a multilateral agreement for the purchase of vaccines through the League of Cities. (Zamboanga Post)

Continued from page 1 the surge in Covid-19 cases in the past months. The Private Hospitals Association (PHAP) and the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) said the spike in the number of infections also resulted in the shortage of hospital beds and doctors have appealed to residents to strictly follow the health protocols. Zamboanga City now has over 2,000 active Covid-19 cases and the number continues to rise despite efforts of the local government to control the spread of the deadly respirato-

The ZCMS has renewed its contract for 12,000 cylinders with an oxygen supplier which gets the supply in Cebu and due to the shortage, it can only deliver 100 cylinders every week. Mayor Beng Climaco, head of the local Covid-19 task force, said the local government is helping and facilitating the delivery of oxygen supply from Cebu and even Manila to replenish stocks in Zamboanga. “But what makes the situation difficult is that oxygen suppliers are also serving other provinces where Covid-19 cases are also soar-

ry virus. PHAP President Dr. Marites Maximo said private hospitals have temporarily frozen the admission of Covid-19 patients requiring oxygen because of the shortage of supply. “This is our present situation. I would like to appeal to everyone, please continue practicing the minimum health standards,” Max-

ing,” she said. The lack of oxygen supply in Zamboanga has belied reports made by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana to President Rodrigo Duterte that the shortage of supply in the country has been addressed. “Sa ngayon po ay mukhang wala na tayong naririnig na mga reklamo sa mga ospital sa buong bansa dahil sapat na

imo said. Dr. Afdal Kunting, ZCMC chief, also echoed Maximo’s appeal and called on the public not to be complacent and to comply with the health and quarantine protocols. “The Covid-19 situation now is more serious than before. More people are getting sick, their health condition is worsening and that’s why we are appealing to everybody to comply with the minimum health standards, to wear face masks in public places or to stay at home,” he said. Kunting said medical frontliners are now overwhelmed with severe Covid-19 cases, adding, the ZCMC has opened additional wards to accommodate the surge of patients.

‘yung supply ng ating oxygen,” said Lorenzana, the chairman of the national Covid-19 task force. Dr. Rolando Enrique Domingo, of the Food and Drug Administration, said there are at least 120 licensed manufacturers which supply hospitals across the country. According to the Zamboanga City Health Office, the following villages have the highest number active Covid-19 cases: Tetuan, Tumaga, and Santa Maria recorded over 100 cases; and under 100 are Putik, Guiwan, Calarian, Talon-Talon, Ayala, San Roque, Tugbungan, Pasonanca, Divisoria, Canelar, Mercedes, Baliwasan, Lunzuran, San Jose Gusu, Vitali, Malagutay and Culianan.

The spike in infections in the community are largely blamed to the Delta variant of the Covid-19 and the complacency of residents who continue to violate public health protocols despite repeated warnings from the local government and the City Health Office. 2. Ulcer - Nagiging asidik ang sikmura. 3. Paninikip ng dibdib. 4. High blood pressure 5. Hirap huminga, palpitasyon at kinakabhan 6.

Baka may iba palang sanhi. Good luck po.

DOH regional director Dr. Joshua Brillantes hands over the SRA cheque to Mayor Beng Climaco. (Bong Serondo) MAYOR BENG Climaco thanked the Department of Health for releasing some P36 million in Special Risk Allowance or SRA which is intended for local government health workers. DOH Regional Director Dr. Joshua Brillantes handed over the cheque to Climaco. It will cover the SRA of barangay health workers, barangay nutrition scholars, Covid-19 contact tracers and regular employees of the City Health Office, among others. The mayor lauded Brillantes for taking the “extra mile to personally hand over the check” to the local government. She also thanked the Local Finance Committee, specifically the City Accountant Office, the City Treasurer Office, the City Budget Offices, as well as the City Legal Office for expediting the liquidation

for the payment of the first tranche of the SRA in September. Climaco said the continuous grant of the SRA is a show of gratitude to all the frontliners, who sacrifice their lives for the safety and protection of others. “We thank all our frontliners assigned in medical facilities, in the borders and down to the barangays,” she said. She ordered the Local Finance Committee to expedite the preparation of the documents for the release of the SRA to public health workers as soon as possible. The second tranche will cover the period December 20, 2020 to June 30, 2021 at a maximum of P5,000 per month with 22 working days. Last month, hundreds of local health workers thanked Climaco after receiving their SRA following government orders to aid those who are in the

frontline of the Covid-19 response. Climaco led the distribution of the SRA to health workers, including child development workers, barangay nutrition scholars, barangay population volunteers, tanods and members of the Barangay Intelligence Network and vaccinators, among others. The beneficiaries received a maximum of P25,000 and a minimum of P15,000 each, depending on the number of days worked. Climaco said the raging battle against Covid-19 has prompted the national government to release the SRA in recognition of the heroic and invaluable contributions of health workers throughout the country as they risk their lives to confront the deadly pandemic. (Zamboanga Post)

(CNN, Reuters)

Sunday Reflection by Mayor Beng Climaco

THE LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." God in His love and goodness has instituted marriage and Family. From individuals joined by God to form a family. ME + We = US. We reflect on God's ways of uniting couples and forming a family as the church is formed. Fr. Francis Bustamante, S.J., shared that in marriage, the spouses must remain TRUE = Trust, Respect, Understanding and Endurance. Marriage requires this and it is quite a challenge. Fr. Bill Abbot calls for greater understanding for couples whose marriage is difficult. Family life is precious and children are blessings amidst the struggle. (Yesterday), I shared with the virtual National Convention of the CLC Christian Life of the Philippines. I recall Oct. 18, 2013 right after the Zamboanga Siege, we were preparing and I noticed my husband los-

ing his balance while tying his shoes. I was alarmed but tried to contain it, since the Family was waiting to surprise my husband on his 65th birthday. After the celebration, we rushed to the hospital where they discovered a clot in his brain. I stayed up with him as he was on a stretcher and later transferred to the room. All I could say was mahal tayo ng Dios! God loves us! Hanging on to Jesus, I called Dr. Rogelio Libarnes who recommended Dr. Willy Cruz, who scheduled a Burr Hole operation in his head. The operation was fast and by the time I returned, my husband was already at the recovery room. The next day, members of the CLC brought a priest and we prayed. That was an experience of how as a family we had to deal with a medical crisis. Forward today, a week ago, we had two close contacts, dear members of our household. Our eldest and her entire family also had Covid. (Last night), a dear friend expired due to Covid complications and I had to consult his grieving mother who is like a mother to us. (This afternoon), I got a call from my High School Teacher in isolation thanking us after assisting in the burial of her colleague who died of covid. I also had to talk to a mother because the family has Covid. What uncertain times we live. We as a couple, as a family, need to clasp our hands on bended knees hanging on to Jesus and praying to the Holy Family. My husband laments how a classmate of his lost three children due to Covid and the agony of bringing them to the hospital. Covid complications are very fatal. We pray for all families in crisis, to find hope, have faith in God with the enduring bond of love. All will be well in Jesus. Yesterday I heard the joyful voice of Tania, our eldest apo, she and her family are en route to recovery. (MBC)

President Rodrigo Duterte gets vaccinated against Covid-19. to society,” wika ni Duterte. “Now, how would do I encourage everybody to vaccination? With these welcome developments in our Covid-19 numbers, I now encourage you, those who have yet to receive the vaccines to get inoculated. Paulit-ulit kasi ‘to. “Instead of forcing vaccines on people, why not make them force themselves to get inoculated? A policy of allowing only fully vaccinated customers to eat indoors, while limiting the unvaccinated to Al Fresco dining is an example. But first, make vaccines available to all,” ani Lacson sa kanyang tweet. “This win-win approach would help both public health and the economy, while respecting the individual rights of citizens to their bodies, and the rights of other citizens to be protected from getting infected. We're facing a pandemic. How can we get out of the pandemic without taking the needed preventive measures?” tanong pa nito. Nitong Hunyo lamang,

“Kayong mga barangay captains, I will task the DILG to do that, to look for these persons and kung hindi, I will order their arrest, sa totoo lang. Why? Because if you are a person na hindi ka vaccinated, you are a carrier, a potential carrier (of Covid-19) and to protect the people, I have to sequester you in jail. Mamili kayo: magpabakuna kayo o ipakulong ko kayo sa selda? Sabi ko sa iyo ‘yong selda diyan sa mga pulis, walang linis ‘yan, eh tamad ‘yang pulis maglinis. Nandoon ang lahat, lahat na ng baho nandoon. Doon kayo. Ganito na lang, I will think it over very hard, legally, of course. Pero ‘pag hindi, ayaw ninyo, ipaaresto ko kayo. That is in pursuance of a policy of our crisis of itong health issue,” ani Duterte. “Iyang mga yawa na 'yan na ayaw magpabakuna. Itong mga gago na ayaw magpa-bakuna, and they are really the carriers. If you are, they can, you know, travel from one place to another, carrying the virus and then contaminating other people. Ito ‘yong ayaw magpabakuna. Kayong ayaw

Kaya don’t get me wrong. There is a crisis being faced in this country. There is a national emergency. So kung lahat ng Pilipinong nakikinig ngayon, bantay kayo. Don’t force my hand into it, kagaya nitong ano. Strong-arm method ‘yan eh. Walang may gusto niyan. Go to India if you want or somewhere, to America. But for as long as you are here and you are a human being, and can carry the virus, eh magpabakuna ka,” wika pa nito. (Zamboanga Post, Mindanao Examiner)
