Climaco hails security forces From page 1 MAYOR BENG Climaco again thanked security forces for their hard work and dedication in securing Zamboanga City and its people and for maintaining peace and order, especially at this time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Climaco, who remains a strong supporter of the police and military and other law enforcement agencies, recently met with police and military commanders at City Hall and discussed the current security measures ahead of the May polls. The mayor reaffirmed her full support to the security sector stressing that this is for the best interest of Zamboanguenos. Those who attended the meeting were Task Force Zamboanga Commander Col. Randolph Rojas, Acting City Police Director Col. Alexander Lorenzo, 74th Infantry Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Julius Villena, Marine Battalion Landing Team 11 Commander Lt. Col Ronaldo Urbano and his Operations Officer, Maj.

Nepthalie Papa. Climaco has over the years thanked security forces and lauded soldiers and personnel and even visits their camps and outposts regularly and joins night patrols in villages. “I will never tire in thanking our hard working security forces for keeping us safe and secure, and helping us even more this time of the health crisis. During holidays, especially Yuletide celebrations, they remain in the posts and leave behind their families and loved ones to protect us all. I salute all of them and thank everyone for their hard work and dedication” she told Zamboanga Post in a phone interview. Last December, security forces foiled a deadly bombing here after capturing a suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorist, Tony Asmun, smuggled an improvised explosive from the neighboring province of Basilan. Police and military units, including operatives from the National Intelligence Coordinat-

ing Agency, raided Asmun’s house in Barangay Kasanyagangan and captured the 57-year old man and recovered the improvised explosive which was assembled from a 90mm mortar bomb rigged to a timer. Asmun smuggled the improvised explosive, hidden inside a sack full of charcoal, by a motorized boat from Basilan’s Hadji Mohamad Ajul town and landed in Mariki village. Climaco, who rushed to the area, ordered security forces to intensify patrols in coastal areas and villages and told police and military commanders to never allow terrorists the opportunity to conduct terroristic activities. She also lauded security forces for the capture of Asmun and effectively foiled a deadly attack here during the Yuletide season. Security forces were also largely credited for the apprehension of hundreds of millions of pesos worth of smuggled cigarettes and other contraband, and illegal drugs here. (Zamboanga Post)

(Zamboanga Post)

Zamboangueños told anew to get vaccinated Continued from page 1 to get vaccinated against the deadly respiratory disease and for those who received primary or two jabs of vaccines should now get a booster shot to protect them from the more contagious Omicron variant. “I am again appealing to all residents who have not been vaccinated to avail of the free Covid-19 vaccines because it will protect and save you from being hospitalized of worse, death. Vaccines are safe and free. We have so many vaccination sites where residents can just go and get vaccinated,” she said. The increase in Covid-19 infections occurred after the Yuletide holidays when the National Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases eased the country’s quarantine protocols which allowed people to move freely only to recall the order weeks later following the dramatic spike in Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant. The national government also renewed calls for citizens to get vaccinated. Acting Presidential Spokesman Karlo Nograles

also underscored the importance of booster doses as additional protection against severe and critical Covid-19 cases. “Mismong si Pangulong Duterte ang nagbigay-diin noong Disyembre hinggil sa halaga ng booster shots, lalo na para sa pagkontrol ng pagkalat ng nakakahawang Omicron variant,” Nograles said, citing reports by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, Nograles emphasized that based on the information from medical experts, vaccine efficacy decreases over time that is why booster shots are a necessary protection against the deadly respiratory disease. “Kaya kailangan natin ng Covid-19 booster shots. Proteksyon din ang booster shots laban sa umuusbong na bagong variants, lalo na laban sa Omicron variant na mabilis makahawa,” he said. Nograles said the national government is targeting to administer 72.16 million boosters for the adult population this year as part of the National Vaccination Program. He said included in the target population for vaccination

are 12.74 million children ages 12 to 17 years old, and 15.56 million children ages five to 11 years old who will receive the primary series vaccines and booster shots. The Philippines has so far vaccinated at least 50% of the population. Dr. Lulu Bravo, Convenor of the Vaccine Study Group of the University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health, said a third shot of a COVID-19 vaccine may have long-lasting benefits, especially against the Omicron variant. Bravo, also the Executive Director of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination, citing a study, said the two vaccine shots are around 30% effective against Covid-19 infections and symptomatic infections and 50% effective against severe disease, hospitalization, and death. But she said that three shots or two doses plus a booster dose are 60% effective against infections and symptomatic infections, while it is 90% effective until two months and 80% effective at three months. Prayers to end pandemic, love to defeat anger

Robredo, Moreno groups thank Mayor Beng for hospitality

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno's wife Diana Lynn and son Joaquin. (Bong Serondo) Continued from page 1 president in the May polls. Climaco led local officials headed by Vice Mayor Meng Agan in welcoming Robredo at the Edwin Andrews Airbase. Robredo’s arrival was part of her regional visit. Robredo also inaugurat-

ed a volunteer center here and also handed over some 500 Covid-19 Home Care Kits to the local government. Climaco thanked Robredo for the donations. The group or Moreno led by his wife Diana Lynn and son Joaquin, also paid a courtesy call on the mayor at City Hall. Climaco also hand-

ed a miniature vinta as a souvenir to Moreno’s wife. Both the groups of Robredo and Moreno thanked Climaco for the warm reception and hospitality even as the mayor was busy at her work and while Zamboanga is under Alert 3 due to the spike in active Copvid-19 cases. (Zamboanga Post)

Zambo bus terminal is common poster area THE COMMISSION on Elections reminded political candidates running in the May polls that it has designated the vacant lot in front of the Zamboanga City Integrated Terminal as a common poster area. COMELEC Election Officers lawyers Verly

Adanza and Stephen Roy Cañete have met with Supervising Transportation Regulation Officer Rafael Derick Evangelista III about this. The poll officers said the campaign period for national candidates will begin on February 8 and

March 25 for those seeking local elective positions. The campaign period for both local and national positions will end on May 7. Evangelista also said the overpass at the bus terminal remains to be a no poster-no billboard zone. (Zamboanga Post)

Continued from page 1 in District 1, also quoted a verse in the Gospel that reads: “Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.” She added: The enemies of the Lord was about to harm him and throw him headlong. “Wow! Could I also muster enough courage as Jesus did and walk past my enemies?” the mayor asked. “In a way, this is what Jesus did, He faced his enemies and walked past them. He did not dignify their threat nor their presence since Jesus had far better things to do and continue his mission.” Climaco renewed her appeals to residents to pray for the pandemic to end and for everybody to be safe against the deadly Covid-19 respiratory disease. And to fight smear campaign by people who only have vested interest.“Hermanas y hermanos, aprende kita este Evangelio siguiendo con Jesus. We walk past them with faith in God’s loving grace, and do God’s mission,” she said. This was also Climaco’s fervent wish and prayers in December when the number of Covid-19 cases were going down. It was also the last time that Climaco celebrated the Yuletide as local chief executive. In an interview with the Zamboanga Post, the populist mayor said she always prays to God and asks nothing for herself, but the safety and welfare of the Zamboangueños and all the good things for the city. “I pray to God for our people to be able to be safe, healthy and happy. With God’s grace we become resilient learning from the struggles we have. Amidst the pandemic, we rely on God’s providence to win over all of life’sstruggles,” she said. “Curada,Comida, Busca Vida y Vacuna. We look forward to 2022 to bring our beloved children

back to school, families safely outdoors, and in prayer with the Holy Family, find hope, have faith in Love. We also pray for our country, for the people to choose the next leaders whom God will direct for us. And a world humble, grateful and good stewards of environment versus Climate Change,”Climaco added. When asked about her wishes for those who continue to hurl black propaganda against her, including her detractors and political trolls, the mayor replied: “I pray for all… for them to be happy and healthy.” The 55-year old Climaco, who is a devout Catholic, mentioned the name of God seven time sand spoke nothing ill against those who talked evil against her, but only praises to the Lord, saying “God watches over everyone.” Climaco, a multi-awarded politician, remains popular among residents and is seen to win in next year’s polls. In 2018,Climaco was chosen as among “Top 5 World’s Best Mayors” by the prestigious City Mayors Foundation. She was named along with Valeria Mancinelli, Mayor ofAncona, Italy who is the Winner of the 2018 World Mayor Prize; Ros Jones, Mayorof Don caster, UK; Nathalie Appéré, Mayor of Rennes, France; and Charlotte Britz, Mayor of Saarbrücken, Germany. In awarding Climaco, the City Mayors Foundation said it heavily cited the mayor for her commitment to offer Zamboanga harmony, security and prosperity. The City Mayors Foundation said “The World Mayor Prize and Commendations” awards are given every two years to mayors who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and have developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world. It noted that shortly after being elected in 2013, Climaco was confronted with an armed uprising by Moro rebels that left parts of Zamboanga City under

siege for 19 days and by the time government forces had defeated the rebels, 183 people haddied and more than 120,000 residents were displaced. “During her first term in office, Climaco made it her priority for the victims of the attack to receive justice and compensation. She has also been determined to heal any divisions between the city’s Christian and Muslim communities. The Inter-Religious Dialogue Council she convened has been successful in promoting peace. In a city, which was often perceived as violent, there have been no bombings or kidnapping incidents since 2016 when she won the mayoralty seat. And in 2017, Mayor Climaco’s administration won the award for the most improved local government,”said the philanthropic international research think tank. It said that in a series of personal essays, the finalists for the 2018 World Mayor Prize described the reasons that motivated them to enter politics, the challenges they face as mayors and how they envisage their towns and cities to develop and prosper in the future. They stressed the importance of women in politics and urged young women to always aim high. In heressay, Climaco describes how the values of family members formed her political and social beliefs. “My grandmother was a champion of Filipino women’s right to vote and it was from her, we all learned the value of community service,” she said. She also wrote that in times of crisis her faith in God sustained her. Climaco was also recognized as “Most Outstanding Mayor” by the Federation of Local Councils of Women in the Philippines in 2017. These awards and rankings were based on indicators and measurements such as economic dynamism, government efficiency, infrastructure and resiliency. These recognitions are feats never before achieved by any administration. (Zamboanga Post)

HEALTH

Para Lumiit Ang Bilbil (Tiyan): Anong Gagawin? Ni Dr. Willie T. Ong

M

7. Magkaroon ng tamang tindig (posture). Huwag maging kuba sa pagupo at pagtayo. 8.

12. Kumain ng 2 tasang gulay at 2 tasang prutas araw-araw. Umiwas sa matataba at mamantikang pagkain. 13. Maglakad ng madalas at umakyat ng 1 o 2 palapag ng hagdanan. 14. Bawasan ang stress at matulog ng sapat. 15. Maging masipag. Good luck po.

OPINION

Sunday Reflection by Mayor Beng Climaco

THE SECOND reading defines Love. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. “It does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices with the TRUTH.” My parents empowered me to speak-up and be a fiscalizer. Growing up in the U.S., I have gained frankness tempered by sincerity in what I express. My friends know me too well, that I will always be honest and state what is true. Just last week, I was struggling with an itchy throat and afraid of Covid, I could not retire. My brother shared a eulogy which bothered me because I was sighted and slighted wrongfully. I reviewed the facts and also as a Guidance Counsellor also checked on the effect, the UNNECESSARY BURDEN and hurt the person carries. During mass, I found these words encouraging. El Verdad debia sabe. Being sensitive to the situation, I pray for God’s grace to reach-out to the person as his “sentimiento” seems unfounded and the blame as most people do is on me. Keeping HURTS and grudges will only lead to misery.
