Zamboanga City Vice Mayor Rommel Agan, who received the prestigious award together with City Administrator Apple Go on Climaco’s behalf, said: “Zamboanga City bagged the award on the basis of having a leadership that prioritizes the well-being of the environment that the City Government

residents and tourists to the “City of Flowers.” The festival is famous for its Regatta de Zamboanga or vinta (sail boat) racing and the “Mascota de Zamboanga” which showcase the talents, craftsmanship and creativity of Zamboangueño fashion designers in creating traditional wardrobe used during the Spanish era. Stalls have been here put up by travelling merchants from Luzon and Visayas to showcase their products in an open bazaar. Regional trade exposition is also being held during the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. In the past festival, a beauty pageant and parade of lights, including the Chavacano Video Music Festival and a dance party, Danza La Vida, highlighted the event. The festival also features novena masses, cultural shows, agricultural

fairs, art, photo and flower garden exhibits, torch parades, fireworks, and carnivals. Zamboanga City had been under Spanish rule in the past and was also used as a base for American soldiers. The area around Zamboanga Peninsula has been occupied by indigenous people as early as 30,000 years ago. The first inhabitants were the Subanons and Lutaos and later, the Islamized ethnic groups of Samals, Bajaus, Tausugs, and Yakans. In August, Climaco led the launching of the official festival logo and soundtrack “Vene ya na Zamboanga,” (Ven a Zamboanga) the calendar of activities, guidelines of the different competitions and festival merchandises, among others at the Marcian Garden Hotel and attended by over 300 people. It also saw the unveil-

ing of the Zambo Hermosa App, an online platform for local tourism, events, foods and places and a collaboration of the Hermosa App NGO group and the City Government. The app is downloadable online where one can get access to the services of the City Tourism Office, get updates on the activities of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival as well as access to tourism products and services offered by the locals. Christian Olasiman, head of the City Government’s Special Events Team, said the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival celebration will center on three distinct, yet very important core values that defined the bedrock of the Zamboangueño communities and their continued resurgence as a people – Diversidad, Resiliencia y Alegria or Diversity, Resilience and Joy. Mayor Beng Climaco with sardine industry stakeholders. (Kathy Wee Sit) THE SARDINES INDUSTRY in Zamboanga City remains a big contributor to the local economy and Mayor Beng Climaco has commended the Southern Philippines Deep Sea Fishing Association and the Industrial Group for their contribution during the recent 4th National Sardines Industry Congress held at the Marcian Garden Hotel’s Palacio del Sur here. “Zamboanga, one of the highly urbanized cities in the Philippines, is very much thankful to the SOPHIL (Southern Philippines) Deep Sea Fishing Association and the Industrial Group for their contribution to the economic development of the city,” Climaco said, adding, almost 80% of the country’s supply of sardines is canned and processed in Zamboanga. She also cited the latest technology the sardines industry is now utilizing, saying, “that jibes with our dreams to catapult the industrial sector of Zamboanga by ensuring they start up through technology and innovations to boost the development and progress of

the city.” Climaco said she even took pride of the Zamboanga’s sardines industry during her recent participation in the global conference dubbed “BRIDGE for Cities 4.0” organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in Vienna, Austria. She praised stakeholders for the strict implementation of the fishing ban, saying, the closed fishing season will allow spawning of sardines and increased future catch and result to increase volume in sardine production. Sardines are among the most commercially important pelagic species in the country, accounting to 22% of the total commercial fisheries production in 2017. Being cheap, but high with protein, sardine is one of the most accessible fish species for the Filipinos. Aside from its evident economic value, sardines, being located in the basal part of the food web have major ecological importance to big predators like tuna, mammals and cetaceans.

According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, there are 6 major fishing grounds in the country - Ragay Gulf, Ticao PassSan Bernardino Strait, Bohol Sea, Sulu Archipelagic Waters, Visayan Sea, Moro Gulf-Illana Bay and Sibuguey Bay. And other major fishing grounds for sardines are in the waters of PalawanPassage, Mindoro Strait, Lamon Bay, Burias Pass, Samar Sea, Lagonoy Gulf, Sibuyan Sea, Dinagat and Manila Bay. The benefits of sardines industry in the country is extended up to the sardine value added products. In Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, data from AC Nielsen Survey shows that there is an increasing trend in the number of workers in sardines cannery and bottled Sardines. An increase of 94% in the number of workers has been observed from 2008 to 2015 for cannery and 17% for bottled sardines. Sardines industry in Zamboanga provides employment opportunities for fishers, traders and processors. (Zamboanga Post)

LOTTO TIPS KARON SEMANA

Timbo karon, timbo ugma, timbo kada adlaw ug timbo kada semana!

HEALTH

Ni Dr. Willie T. Ong

Magpapayat ng Tamang Paraan TUWING BAGONG TAON mayroon tayong New Year’s Resolution.
