Zambo to come up with public transport route plan Continued from page 1 The draft is a product of months of collection, analysis and consolidation of transport data, as well as a series of public consultations and a transport summit jointly conducted by the LPTRP Technical Working Group and the Department of Civil Engineering of the Western Mindanao State University’s College of Engineering and Technology. Mayor Beng Climaco and other local government officials and lawmakers said road widening and opening of new roads are important to decongest vehicular traffic in Zamboanga. Climaco said opening new roads and widening the streets, especially in downtown areas and adjacent barangays, are needed to decongest the worsening traffic problems due to the growing numbers of motorists here. The controversial flyover which was being pushed by then Congressman Celso Lobregat and the Department of Public Works and Highways had been opposed by Climaco and other members of the City Council. “We need to widen

the roads first because it is very urgent for us for the passage of people in order to decongest traffic. We leave it (flyover project) to the City Engineer’s Office, Dr. (Elmeir) Apolinario (of the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office) and DPWH to look at finishing the bypass road so this will also ease traffic and provide alternative route,” Climaco said. Climaco said there is a need for a feasibility study for future overpass bridge. “We are pro-development and nowadays, even our traffic management needs to come up with a plan or study to assess the impact before and after the project is implemented, and so we also need feasibility studies of flyover project in the future,” she said. Congressman Cesar Jimenez said he will work closely with the DPWH and other concerned government agencies with regards to the road projects and other alternative routes here to solve the pestering traffic problems. The flyover project became so controversial after Lobregat – who ran for mayor and defeated in the midterm polls - insisted

that the overpass bridge must be constructed immediately despite the failure of DPWH to comply with the requirements set by the local government. DPWH also had insisted in the past for the construction of the project even without the necessary road widening. Climaco has repeatedly said in public that the local government is supporting the implementation of national infrastructure here, including the proposed flyover project, but reiterated that there is a dire need to first widen the roads affected by the construction of the overpass. The overpass project would cost about P600 million and is expected to be completed in at least 500 days or more considering how slow the DPWH in their public works. Last December, the DPWH conducted a traffic dry run in areas affected by the flyover project to mimic construction works, but it only drew angry reactions from motorists and commuters as well because of the chaotic situation it created even for just a week. Residents told to take steps to prevent fires Continued from page 1 responsibility and close supervision in using appliances at home to prevent fire incident. “I would like to make an appeal to all residents of Zamboanga in the light of the spate of fire incidents that parents, grandparents and children must actively participate in ensuring that we comply with the safety measures such as supervision over all plugged electrical appliances,” she said. “Secondly, do not allow hazardous materials that can cause fire from being unsupervised whether by adults or children,” she added, noting a report by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) that most of the fires were caused by faulty

electrical wiring and personal negligence. Climaco said she had conferred with the members of the BFP and Councilor El King Omaga, chairman of the City Council Committee on Disaster Prevention, and also informed Vice Mayor Rommel Agan that there is an urgent need to take proactive measures to prevent fires. “We will have to take proactive measures and one of the most important measures is for all residents to be responsible na di aton maga caserias, especialmente na usada del di aton maga equipaje na casa tambien.” “This is also part of our campaign to ensure that when we are using

our appliances, necesita personal supervision and personal responsibility down to the children. This is the most effective means (to prevent fire) because prevention must begin at home,” she said. Climaco also met with BFP Regional Director, Senior Superintendent Sydney Besana, and newly-installed City Fire Marshal, Superintendent Marie Epiphany Ramirez and discussed measures on how to further intensify fire prevention and fire safety awareness. She urged the BFP to undertake measures to heighten public awareness on the prevention and control of fire incidents here. (Zamboanga Post)

full vaccination against the poliovirus is the best way to prevent the transmission of the disease. “We urge all parents and caregivers, health workers, and local government units to protect their children and communities against the poliovirus by participating in the synchronized vaccination in high-risk areas in Mindanao,” Duque said. He said the campaign will be expanded to the whole of Mindanao on November 25 and concluded with the last round of vaccination on January 6 next year. Health Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, of the Public Health Services Team, said there is no cure for polio, but it can only be prevented with three doses of the polio vaccine. “Vaccination is the best way to protect your child against vaccine-preventable diseases such as polio, measles, diphtheria, tetanus, per-

tussis, and tuberculosis, among others,” Vergeire said. The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are also supporting the government’s synchronized polio vaccination campaign. “The polio outbreak is a wakeup call for the Philippines. We must act now to protect children against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases through immunization,” said acting WHO Representative in the Philippines Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe. “To stop this outbreak, we aim to reach nearly two million children within two weeks. We will work closely with the Department of Health to achieve this target. We need bayanihan from everyone – the parents and caregivers, mayors, governors, community and religious leaders, health workers, volunteers, and media partners,” Abeyas-

inghe added. The Philippines has seen a decline of immunization coverage in the past few years, including for protection against polio. In 2018, at least 66% of children completed their oral polio vaccine (drops) doses and 45% received their inactivated polio vaccine (injection) dose. At least 95% of children under 5 years old need to be vaccinated, irrespective of their current vaccination status, to stop the spread of polio in the country. “Every child under 5 years old in these priority areas needs to be vaccinated now. There is no alternative to protect children from the risk of polio than vaccinating them. The polio vaccine is safe and effective. UNICEF is working with WHO to support DOH meet the country’s immunization targets,” said Oyun Dendevnorov, UNICEF Philippines Representative. (Zamboanga Post)
