THE LOCAL government continues to tighten its watch for the deadly Wuhan coronavirus that has infected dozens of people in the country. Although Zamboanga remains free from the disease, Mayor Beng Climaco ordered the City Health Office to further intensify its monitoring after President Rodrigo Duterte declared the spread of the virus as “public health emergency.” The Department of Health raised the coronavirus alert to Code Red (sublevel 1) following the rising number of people infected with the disease. Climaco reminded residents to always maintain cleanliness and good hygiene practises even as the local government Continue on page 3

Anti-polio drive successful Continued from page 1 anti-polio campaign which began on February 17 and culminated March 1, vaccinated 221,917 children – more than 8% from the target. The latest bOPV campaign was part of the nationwide “Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio” spearheaded by the Department of Health (DOH) in an effort to contain and eradicate polio in the country. “We thanked all those who participated and worked hard to make this anti-polio drive successful – our health workers and volunteers and also to all the parents and guardian
who took part in this endeavour,” Climaco said. Miravite announced the third round for the bOPV will be held from March 23 to April 4 for children less than 10 years old. She said following the re-emergence of the polio virus last year, the CHO has jointly spearheaded several immunization rounds for monovalent (mOPV) and bOPV to eligible children ages 5 years below for mOPV and 10 years below, regardless of immunization status. “ Z a m b o a n g a achieved more than our targets in all anti-po-
lio campaigns since last year,” Miravite said. For the mOPV, the two vaccination rounds achieved 103% (Round 1 - Nov. 25, 2019 to Dec. 7, 2019) and 110% coverage (Round 2 - January 20 to February 2). And for the bOPV, the first round was held from January 6 – 12, and achieved 105% coverage. Miravite said the local government continues to encourage parents and guardians to bring their children to health centers to be vaccinated and to cooperate with local health workers. (Zamboanga Post)

No COVID-19 in Zambo
Mayor Beng Climaco convenes the Inter-Agency Task Force on COVID-19 to map out plans and measures to appropriately prepare for and respond to the public health hazard posed by the coronavirus disease. The mayor, who heads the task force, recommends the putting up of sanitation areas in all commercial establishments.(Bong Serondo) Continued from page 1 continues to protect the public’s health against the Wuhan coronavirus also called coronavirus disease or COVID-19. “We need to strictly monitor or intensify more our monitoring to ensure Zamboanga City is free from the coronavirus. Let’s us all maintain cleanliness, wash our hands frequently with soap and water, or alcohol and be sure to cover mouth when sneezing or coughing,” Climaco said. City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Miravite said they have strengthened
prevention measures and is taking extra caution and steps to include in its monitoring not only individuals with travel history to countries with travel restrictions, but also individuals with local travels to areas in the country with confirmed coronavirus cases. “Residents, who have recently travelled, even asymptomatic, are urged to coordinate with the City Health Office thru their hotline 955-9601 or 0966175-4298 for advice and guidance. If tiene tu travel history, asymptomatic, we ask you to still coordinate
with us so we can monitor while in home quarantine,” Miravite said. Miravite encouraged residents to regularly wash hands, follow cough etiquette, and avoid crowded places. Cough etiquette is a series of actions to take if you are coughing or sneezing, which are designed to reduce the spread of respiratory illness to others. “Residents are advised to stay home if sick or avoid contact with sick people, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth,” she said. Continued from page 1 water being not fully maximized. So much water is wasted and this is compounded by climate change resulting in water rationing. To be efficient and sufficient, the ZCWD should and must always be at the helm of providing water,” she said. Last week, the local government held a water summit aimed at finding solutions to the water shortage without increasing the rates. Local Water Utilities Administration Administrator Jeci Lapus and ZCWD executives, including representatives from Prime Water, Manila Water and other stake holders attended the summit The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) earlier awarded over P57 million for the conduct of a feasibility study of the Zamboanga impounding dam project on top of a P16 million grant from the Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig Para sa Lahat (Salintubig) program on the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). The NEDA fund will be used for aerial surveys, firming up of dam
locations, identification of borehole locations and subsurface geotechnical investigations which were already done to explore the viability of the project that will help ensure water security in the coming decades. While the Salintubig program is for water system projects in eight barangays with ZCWD as the servicing entity together with the City Planning and the City Engineer’s Office. With the perennial shortage of water supply in Zamboanga, the local government and the ZCWD are now in talks with municipal officials of Sibuco in the neighboring province of Zamboanga del Norte for possible water interconnection, according to Elmeir Apolinario, head of the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. Apolinario said Barangay Malayal in Sibuco has a very good source of water supply that can be tapped and interconnected into Zamboanga’s water system. A group of city officials has already visited the area and met with Sibuco municipal officials to discuss the possibility of water interconnection
and how it can benefit both areas. The idea, he said, is patterned after Singapore which for years has relied on Malaysia for its water needs. Singapore has been importing water from Johor, under two bilateral agreements. The first agreement was officially signed on October 1961 and expired in August 2011. The second agreement was signed on September 1962 and will expire in 2061. Apolinario said aside from water interconnection, the Zamboanga City government and the ZCWD are also building on the possibility of developing the 70-hectare Bog Lake in Upper Calarian. He said water samples have already been taken for laboratory testing. The local government is also pursuing the completion of the Lapakan Water System project amounting to P3 million and the Cahumban Water System project worth P76 million and awarded to the ZCWD. Plans for the construction of small impounding dams are already being finalized, according to Apolinario. (Zamboanga Post)

Beng reminds locals on fire safety MAYOR BENG Climaco reminded residents to always turn off electrical appliances when not in use and not leave burning candles at home or stock flammable materials as part of fire safety measures. “Let us always remember all these reminders and fire prevention tips to ensure safety and prevent fires at home,” Climaco said. March is also the “fire prevention awareness month.” Just recently, Climaco joined firemen in fighting a huge fire that consumed the Budget Wise in Campaner one of the biggest supermarket and appliances stores in Zamboanga.
Although no one was hurt in the fire, it was the 64th fire incident since January, according to Acting District Fire Marshal Chief Inspector Jacqueline Ortega, who said last year’s fire incidents totalled 153 during the same period. Ortega attributed the decrease in fire incidents to the people’s increase awareness, however, she noted that most of the fire incidents were non-structural caused by bush or grass fires. Other causes of fires were faulty electrical connection, overheated home appliances, spontaneous combustion of solid material, unattended cooking/
stove, bonfire to structural fire, gas or oil lamps, lighted cigarette and mosquito coils, unattended lighted candle and burning firewood or charcoal. In May 2016, a huge fire in Zamboanga destroyed the Viva Theatre and UniSales Department Store along Mayor Manuel Jaldon Street. Last year, Climaco handed over a dozen brand new Isuzu fire trucks to the Bureau of Fire Protection to help its capability to response quickly to various emergencies and to effectively fight fire in Zamboanga. The six-wheeler, diesel-engine fire trucks can each carry some 3,000 liters

and benzene contents which means cleaner emissions and less pollution in the environment. The donation of the local government was supported by members of the City Council and in response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s modernization program for fire fighters. It is also Climaco’s vision to make Zamboanga City even more resilient and progressive. Aside from the trucks, the local government also provides allowances, among others to the fire department as part of Climaco’s firm commitment to security. Climaco vows to continue supporting the fire department. (Zamboanga Post)
