Sabah praises Duterte, Climaco Continued from page 1 agreed to receive their undocumented countrymen from Sabah,” he said in a statement published by the Borneo Post newspaper. The newspaper also reported that Climaco earlier hesitated to accept entry of the returning Filipinos for fear that they would pose danger to the local populace. “I fear that accepting the influx of deportees from Sabah will
pose danger to the local populace at the time when the city is still crucially fighting the invisible enemy,” the mayor was quoted as saying at a virtual presser in Zamboanga at the height of the pandemic. However, with the national government’s commitment to bring back the Filipinos, Climaco said she is committed to support Duterte’s campaign to repatriate the Filipinos from
Sabah with Zamboanga as the port of entry and processing area for the returnees. “Secretary Galvez, please report to President Duterte that we will commit to fully support his fight against Covid, one hundred and one percent and we commit to addressing the issue of returning Filipinos from Sabah being the center of processing in Region 9 and we will take on the respon-

sibility in partnership with other agencies and with national government support,” she said, referring to Secretary Carlito Galvez, the Chief Implementer of the Philippines’ policy against Covid-19, who was in Zamboanga recently. Ambrose said it was timely and the right decision, adding, Sabah will resume the deportation of Filipino illegal immigrants starting July. “I was made to understand that the deportation of the 5,300 illegal immigrants will be carried out in batches by the National Security Council,” he said adding that all deportees would undergo strict health protocol procedures before sending them home via the Sandakan-Zamboanga sea route. “Sending home the deportees will help solve overcrowding in detention centers and possible coronavirus infections among the inmates,” he said, adding, the resumption of the deportation would mean that the agonies of the detainees inside the holding centers would be shortened and would also pave for them to secure proper travel documents in the event they wish to work again in Sabah in the fu-
ture. “The Federal and Sabah governments welcome foreign workers provided they enter Malaysia legally,” Ambrose said. Galvez said Zamboanga residents should follow the quarantine guidelines and not be complacent as more challenges await the local government when returning Filipinos from Sabah arrive soon. “Unang-una yun Zamboanga ay maraming mga challenges kaya huwag tayong mag kompyansa – unang challenges natin (ay) yun mga OFWs. OFWs will still remain because the world economy contracted (at) ang nangyari ngayon sa Middle East (ay) over 70 % ng business sa Middle East has shut down, nag lock down rin sila and more or less maybe 200,000 to 500,000 even a million of our OFWs will be coming here (to Zamboanga),” he said. Helping Hand Kuala Lumpur previously thanked Climaco for the support and assistance of the local government to its citizens stranded in Zamboanga City. Ambassador Norman Muhamad met with Climaco at the side line of
the repatriation of the Malaysians, including those stranded in Sulu and nearby Basilan province. Muhamad also thanked Sulu Governor Sakur Tan for assisting and taking care of dozens of Malaysians in the province. “The Embassy of Malaysia would like to record thanks to the Philippine Republic Government for finally giving the approval of this rescue operation. (Malaysia) did not forget the high appreciation to the Sulu Task Force (Covid) in taking care of Malaysians in Sulu; and the Philippine Marines and Philippine (National) Police on the safety and security that had been given throughout the operation.” “Our party is also touched by the help of the Philippine Air Force for flying the Ambassador and officers of the Malaysian embassy in Manila to Zamboanga City so that all the affairs there can be managed by our side,” the Embassy said, adding, a total of 154 Malaysians stranded in the Philippines had been flown out of the country in June. Good Job Mayor!
Continued from page 1 following the outbreak of the Covid-19 here in March. “I would like to congratulate Zamboanga City kasi nakita natin without any help or konti ang tulong mula sa amin you were able to stand on your own. Nakita natin you fought with a might sa Covid efforts natin,” Galvez said. He also cited the efforts of the different government agencies in collaborating with the local Covid-19 task force in preventing the virus from further spreading. “Ang kagandahan ngayon dito sa atin sa Region 9 (ay) very collective ang ating mga desisyon and because of the leadership of our Mayor Beng Climaco. Madam, thank you for your leadership at least nakikita natin.” “Imagine yun buong Region 9 (ay) walang testing capacity yan, but you were able to weather yun initial (Covid cases) wave na tumama sa atin, so yun ang nakita (namin) na isang malaking difference - yun ating mga tao ay disiplinado (at) maganda yun pagsasamahan natin dito although you have different peoples - narito ang Kristiyano, Lumad at brother Muslims, but we tend to listen to our leader (Mayor Beng Climaco). We have to continue that,” Galvez said.
Not a Problem Zamboanga now has only about 3 dozen active Covid-19 cases after dozens recovered from the fatal respiratory disease. Its hospital - Zamboanga City Medical Center also serves not only local Covid-19 patients, but also those from the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. “We are very happy that Zamboanga is not a problem for us because we have that kind of unity. Yun mga doctors dito, and the politicians and local leaders ay helping each other. Nakita natin na basta may unity, and unity of efforts among all (government) agencies kaya natin ito, kaya natin ang Covid,” he said, adding, President Rodrigo Duterte told him to congratulate Climaco for effectively handling the pandemic. However, Galvez said local residents should follow the quarantine guidelines and not be complacent as more challenges await the local government when returning Filipinos from Sabah arrive here soon. Follow Guidelines “Unang-una yun Zamboanga ay maraming mga challenges kaya huwag tayong mag kompyansa – unang challenges natin (ay)
yun mga OFWs. Galvez said with Climaco’s leadership and discipline of the locals, Zamboanga is a good model for other local governments to emulate, saying he was sent here by Duterte to see how the mayor managed to control the pandemic from spreading. He cited Cebu where Covid-19 cases continue to rise and how politics affected the government efforts in controlling the spread of the pandemic. “Kaya maraming pressure sa amin na gusto nilang bumalik sa GCQ, but we opted them at ECQ because we want to preserve life and we want a respite or magkaroon ng capacity building yun ating mga health workers na medyo makapahinga sila ng konti,” he said, referring to Cebu. “Malakas ang politika sa Cebu, sad to say malakas ang politika sa Cebu,” he added. “I would like to thank the Mayor (Beng Climaco) for her leadership kaya po nakikita natin
ang ating mahal na Presidente sabi nga niya “General, Chief Implementer, puntahan mo ang ibang mga lugar para at least makakita tayo ng model, para at least makita natin kung ano ang mga model na iyon na puwede natin i- transform sa ibang area.” Working from the Heart “So what good model I have learned from Zamboanga City – one is gov-
ernance and leadership and then it is collective, and then there is unity, unity of efforts among (government) agencies, and then lastly, yun sinasabi ni Presidente (sa akin) – “alam mo General, when you do something, put your heart on it and when you put your heart on it, we can solve many problems,” he said and cited Climaco’s efforts. He further said that
while Duterte was cursing, the president has a big heart for the Filipinos. “Alam ninyo si Presidente naririnig ninyo lang nagmumura, pero kapag once you are talking with him closely, yun mga golden words (ay) naririnig ko sa kanya (at) “sabi niya if you want to serve people, you have to put your heart on what you are doing right now.” (Zamboanga Post)
Zamboanga is now a ‘Digital City’ Continued from page 1 and Business Process Management (IT-BPM) sector and promote countryside development. Previously termed “Next Wave Cities”, the Digital Cities 2025 program is expected to determine the industry-readiness of new centers by creating and developing ICT hubs in identified locations. It said these ICT hubs shall serve as business and innovation centers to draw in investments that can be expected to create more jobs and other economic opportunities in areas outside the National Capital Region. DICT said this program forms part of its National ICT Month 2020
Celebration with the banner of “Maximizing ICT for the New Normal”. Under the program, local government units, ICT Councils, and IT-BPM locators will have access to information on strategies and best practices from the private and public sectors to effectively develop and grow the ITBPM industry in the regions. “We believe that the Digital Cities 2025 program will help focal areas promote local participation in order to strengthen their economies and governance systems in the New Normal setting,” DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II said, adding, this significant movement also aligns with the
President Rodrigo Duterte’s ‘Balik Probinsya, Balik Pag-asa Program. The other digital cities are Balanga, Batangas, Cabanatuan, Dagupan, General Santos, Iligan, Iriga, Laguna Cluster, Laoag, Legazpi, Malolos, Metro Cavite, Metro Rizal, Olongapo, Puerto Princesa, Roxas, San Fernando in La Union, San Fernando in Pampanga, San Jose del Monte, Tacloban, Tagbilaran, Tarlac, Tuguegarao and Urdaneta. This is the first time that Zamboanga has been considered a digital city because of the efforts of Mayor Beng Climaco to put Zamboanga on the digital map. Climaco is a strong advocate of ICT. Beng urges Zamboangueños to plant more trees
Fruit trees line up this neighborhood in Zamboanga City. ZAMBOANGA MAYOR Beng Climaco urged residents to plant more trees and beautify their yards and surroundings and at the same time help air pollution. In an interview with the Zamboanga Post, Climaco explained that trees give off oxygen which is beneficial to health, especially at this time the
country is fighting the coronavirus pandemic – a deadly respiratory disease that had killed over 504,000 around the world with more than 10 million infected. She said just recently, the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) distributed forest and fruit tree seedlings to baran-
gay officials and environmentalists who participated in the observance of Arbor Day - an activity in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees. They planted the seedlings in Pasonanca and Zambowood, according to Climaco, who lauded those who joined the tree planting.
She said the “greening program” was based on the OCENR’s “Family Approach Greening at Home Project” where families are enjoined to engage in planting activities in their respective vacant spaces with expected vital impact for health and wellness of communities. Climaco said Zamboanga remains one of the best cities in the country that have thick vegetation and forests whose mountains are covered with greens because of the strict environmental laws the local government is enforcing, and the natural
love of Zamboangueños for their surroundings. She said aside from trees, residents can also start growing their own vegetable garden either in their backyards or in containers, adding, it can save money on monthly food bill. Gardening is also a natural stress reliever because being outside in the fresh air and sunshine can improve mood and make one feel rejuvenated and happy, according to Climaco, citing the benefit of growing a vegetable garden. She said during the
weeks Zamboanga was in a strict quarantine measure, residents resorted to planting vegetable and ornamental plants, and even various barter sites on Facebook offer plants in exchange for food items and groceries. “Let us plants trees and grow our own vegetable garden and we feel happy by what we do,” Climaco said. Climaco’s modest house in Santa Maria is also adorned with various species of plants and trees which are home to different birds. (Zamboanga Post)

Western Mindanao police chief impressed with Zambo surveillance center
Regional police Chief Brigadier General Jesus Cambay, Jr. listens to a briefing by a staff of the local government’s Security Surveillance Coordinating Office during his visit. (SSCO Photo) ZAMBOANGA CITY – Regional police chief Brigadier General Jesus Cambay, Jr. visited the command center of the local government’s Security Surveillance Coordinating Office (SSCO) and was impressed by its operation. Cambay was briefed on the SSCO’s accomplishments since its establishment in May last year and maintained 24/7 operations amid the coronavirus pandemic to keep Zamboanga safe and secured. A simulation exercise was also held during Cambay’s visit to show to the official the SSCO’s capabilities to monitor, coordinate and response during emergencies or incidents. Cambay commended the SSCO for its contributions to the local police force which was awarded as “Best City Police Office” in the country last year. The SSCO is the brain child of Mayor Beng Climaco with security as one of her top priority programs. The police force and the
military are also recipients of patrol cars donated by Climaco to help authorities maintain peace and order. Cambay, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1989, is new in the western Mindanao region and replaced Brigadier General Froilan Quidilla, who retired at age 56. He was previously the Deputy Regional Director for Administration and Deputy Director for Operations in Western Visayas, and was largely credited for the 2018 peaceful and orderly rehabilitation of Boracay Island as commander of the 600-strong Metro Boracay Task Force helping the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. He was also awarded during last year’s 118th Police Service Anniversary for his effort in the six-month Boracay rehabilitation program ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte. Cambay, a native of
the small Ifugao town of Lagawe, also served as the Director of Philippine National Police (PNP) Intelligence Group in March this year, according to Major Helen Galvez, a regional police spokeswoman. Galvez said Cambay’s designation was approved by PNP Chief, General Archie Francisco Gamboa upon the recommendation of the PNP Senior Officers Placement and Promotion Board. Despite being new in his post, Cambay is very active and even went out of his headquarters here to personally commend policemen and anti-narcotics agents for their recent accomplishment that led to the arrest of a 17-year old drug dealer and the recovery of a kilo of crystal meth. Cambay’s good example as regional police chief further boosted the morale of policemen here under equally hardworking Zamboanga police director Colonel Thomas Joseph Martir. (Zamboanga Post)
DepEd gets usual support from LGU Continued from page 1 Tuballa and other education officials and committed funds from the Special Education Fund for the preparation of learning materials under the DepEd’s blended learning modules. “As always we want to assist the DepEd and we want to provide the necessary measures for our teachers and facilitate the learning of our pupils which is the core of educative process,” said Climaco, who also chairs the Local School Board. Late last year, Climaco donated over a dozen brand new, 43-inch Samsung full high definition television sets to the Santa Maria Central School
Special Education Center after one of its students Jellyn Castillan wished that someone would donate a television for her class. And Jellyn had her wish come true. It was an emotional moment not only for Jellyn and her classmates, but also the teachers at the school when Climaco handed over the televisions in a simple ceremony in September. The digital televisions were all equipped with a pair of High-Definition Multimedia Interface ports and one Universal Serial Bus port. Climaco said the use of television as a tool for learning will make classroom activities more in-
teresting, colorful and meaningful, and vowed to continue other educational programs to help improve the quality of education in Zamboanga. And the good news did not stop there – Climaco, whose priorities include “education” – said at least 600 more brand new televisions are on their way to other School Special Education Centers to help and aid students in their class. The local government appropriated some P1.9 billion for educational programs in the last 5 years as part of the Climaco’s flagship program on Security, Health and Education. (Zamboanga Post)
Armyworms attack corn fields Continued from page 1 Office reported that armyworms have attacked some 76.9 hectares of corn fields in Barangay Mampang, Mercedes, Dulian, Upper Bungiao, Lamisahan, Lapakan, Buenavista, Limaong and Taluptap. Because of the infestation, City Agriculturist Carmencita Sanchez ordered technologists to continuously monitor corn fields and coordinate with the farmers and report any occurrence of the pests to the Crops Division for immediate action. To stop widespread infestation, Sanchez said they distributed chemicals to the affected farmers to prevent further damage to their crops. She reminded farmers to maintain proper cultural management practices and to use pesticides appropriate to fight against the armyworms. According to the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, the fall armyworm can be one of the more difficult insect pests to control in field corn. Late planted fields and later maturing hybrids are more likely to become infested. Fall armyworm causes serious leaf feeding damage as well as direct injury to the ear. While fall armyworms can damage corn plants in nearly all stages of development, it will concentrate on later plantings that have not yet silked. Pests and Trolls Like pests, political trolls are also attacking efforts of the local government in combating the spread of the coronavirus. Mayor Beng Climaco previously branded as “very malicious and very dangerous” the false information and fake news being peddled by political trolls and her foes amid the health crisis. Climaco blasted propagandists who are
spreading fake news on social media, particularly on Facebook, and especially on the issue of the rising number of Covid-19 infections and the late releasing of test results by health authorities. “Actualmente este insinuations are very malicious and very dangerous, as Local Chief Executive you do not know what it feels every time I received a (report of Covid) positive case. No one would want to endanger Zamboanga City, aquellos que tiene malicioso pensamiento que ta pensa que ta queda kita alegre na maga caso positivo is very dangerous. Poreso gane este maga tiempo mas bueno pa si concentra ya lang kita na de atun trabaho imbes de hace calayat maga false information.” “We are really praying that every Zamboangueño be healed because if every Zamboangueño is healed then Zamboanga City will be able to recover. Stop insinuating and stop accusing (and) let us work together for the benefit of Zamboanga City,” Climaco said. She said the local task force on Covid-19 and health authorities are exercising all measures to ensure public safety despite previously being under the General Community Quarantine based on the decision of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases and approved by President Rodrigo Duterte. “We are really exercising every ounce of safety measures and sometimes people think the City Government is very slow, but we have to be safe than sorry,” Climaco said. She said the local government has to set three vital measures to further combat the spread of the deadly Covid-19 disease following the emergence of new positive cases. “We have to set three
very important measures: One is to strengthen the monitoring in our barangay health emergency response; second is to provide opportunity for data collection and contact tracing and next, we need to also prepare system and a module where every individual Zamboangueño is responsible enough when they are in public. So these three (important measures) have to be set in place so that we will be able to be in a more relaxed, new normal process in the city of Zamboanga,” she said. “Na favor de Dios, el de atun maga paciente de Covid-19 ta recobre embuenamente con el amor, ayuda y compacion del de atun mga medical front-liners pero mientras tiene ta recobre, tiene tamen ta umenta el caso. We need to remain vigilant and to continue carrying out the minimum health protocols. To move forward and to rise from the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, we need to balance el de atun health and the economy poreso ay esperanza kita el declaracion del national IATF so cosa ya ba el status del ciudad de Zamboanga,” Climaco added. City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite was also saddened by the spread of the black propaganda, saying, health authorities are working hard to ensure the safety of everyone against the Covid-19. Last week, Duterte placed Zamboanga under more relaxed Moderate General Community Quarantine based on the recommendation of the national and local task forces on Covid-19 and the Department of Health. Climaco thanked Duterte for his support to the local government and she reminded residents to strictly follow quarantine guidelines and health protocols. (Zamboanga Post)
