‘I got Covid-19 two months ago. I’m still discovering new areas of damage,’ says CNN’s Richard Quest
Richard Quest (CNN) Continued from page 1 mid-April. The onset of symptoms came quickly. I suddenly noticed I was feeling very tired and I had a new cough. I got tested and the morning after I received a phone call from the medical center, I had tested positive for coronavirus. The virus is like a tornado. When it lands, it swirls through the body, causing chaos, confusion, coughs, wreaking damage to each organ it touches. Some won’t survive its visit. For those that do, when it has gone, one surveys the damage to the human landscape and realizes it’s much greater than first thought. My symptoms were on the milder side: I never had breathing difficulties, or loss of sense or smell. I was wiped-out tired and I always had “the cough,” which has now returned.
The Covid cough is not like your usual coughit-up deep cough (what doctors politely call a “productive cough.”) It is very distinctive. It is a dry, raspy, wheezy, cough. In my case, lots of short, expelling gasps of air, followed by a long, deep, chest-wrenching expiration cough, that has standers by wondering if I am going to keel over. I have tested negative for the virus and positive for the antibodies, and my doctor says it won’t return. But there are days when I feel that it has. I am also discovering new areas of damage: I have now become incredibly clumsy. I was never the most lissome person, no one ever called me graceful, but my clumsiness is off the chart. If I reach for a glass, or take something out of a cupboard, I will knock it, or drop it on the
floor. I have tripped over the curb and gone flying. I fall over furniture. It is as if that part of my brain, which subconsciously adjusts hand and movement to obstacles it sees, isn’t working. At times there’s a sense of mild confusion. The micro delay in a thought, the hesitation with a word. Nobody would notice but me. My digestive system is peculiar, to say the least. It doesn’t matter whether I call them symptoms, traits, or wreckage -- my body doesn’t feel quite right. The doctors try to reassure me, saying, this will wear off, but they can’t tell me when. Last week was bad. The cough has been with me for days, I have been tired and needed to take naps. I tripped over the camera tripod then fell over a chair! I am concerned but not panicked, yet. This week already feels much better. For those who have not had Covid, or witnessed the mess it leaves behind, again, I urge you, do whatever you can to avoid this tornado. It will roar through the body -- kill some on the way -injure all in its path -- and then when you think “well, thank God that’s gone,” look around, the damage is strewn everywhere and will be with you long after the crisis has passed. Covid is a tornado with a very long tail. (Richard Quest – CNN)

LTFRB bumigay sa paki-usap ni Mayor! Thank you all! Beng tested negative for Covid-19
Kenneth Beldua, at IBT Supervisor Rafael Evangelista.
“The City Government has taken steps to assist the riding public and that it will continue to find ways to ease the burden of our commuters,” ani Beldua. Continued from page 1 Health authorities did not identify who was the official infected with the virus. In coming out publicly to inform the public, and thanking God, Climaco said: “This week, my faith was tested when I underwent a swab test for Covid-19! When the negative result came out, I was filled with so much gratitude to God. Emboldened by the Holy Spirit to take on any challenge in life, realizing God has a purpose and mission for me in life!”
She also wrote this on her social media page: “Today is the Feast of St. Thomas, the Apostle, known as Doubting Thomas! After the encounter with the Risen Lord, he was so emboldened with faith to give his life to Jesus!” And continued to say: “With so many doubts abounding that would distract me from my mission, I could easily give up. But God sends special angels, like Elaine, who showed me my purpose to help children, and Harvey, whose belief is an inspira-
tion despite the distance. As I have discovered God’s purpose, so may you find yours! Elaine, Harvey, Richard, Javier, Hilda, and the Angels that remind me God’s call, thank you! May we find our true calling in life, that’s where God meant us to be!” Climaco was referring to those close to her and the Zamboangueño people who continue to stand by her amid the health crisis, and the barrage of fake news and false information, and black propaganda against her. Continued from page 1 joined the celebration of the 244th U.S. Independence Day and the Philippine-American Friendship Day. The U.S.-educated Climaco highlighted the strong partnership of the Philippines and the United States as she addressed American troops stationed in Mindanao. Climaco spent her high school years in New Jersey where she found her “voice and was taught to speak out.” She was also a recipient of several U.S. scholarships - twice for the International Visitor Leadership Program; the American Council for Young Political Leaders; and the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship. Climaco said under her administration, Zamboanga City has been one of the priori-
ty areas in the country of the U.S.- funded programs, which include technical assistance on governance, security, peace and conflict resolution, education, environmental protection, urban planning, revenue generation and health, especially at this coronavirus pandemic. U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim said he is privileged to have called the Philippines home now for more than three years. He said each year, the concurrent celebration of U.S. Independence Day and Ph i l i p p i n e - A m e r i c a n Friendship Day serve as a poignant reminder of the deep and historical connections that both countries share. “From joint military exercises demonstrating our commitment to regional peace and stabil-
ity, to unfailing humanitarian assistance and diverse people-to-people ties, over the past year, together, we have further enriched our friendship, partnership, and alliance,” he said. “Friends help each other in times of need, or as I’ve heard here, the weight becomes lighter when we help each other – “Ang mabigat ay gumagaan, kapag nagtutulungan.” Manila received over P978 million ($19.5 million) in aid from the U.S. government to address the Covid-19 pandemic. And this was also complemented with donations of food, technology, and other assistance from American companies as a testament to their deep commitment to flatten the pandemic curve in the Philippines. Covid cases rising again in Zambo! Continued from page 1 introduced by Senator Bong Go. Zamboanga - which is under the more relaxed Moderate General Community Quarantine status since the start of this month after 3 months of strict Enhance Community Quarantine - now has at least 6 dozen active Covid cases. “As we have all anticipated, the opening of commercial flights, the entry of local stranded individuals and returning overseas Filipinos, and the easing of restrictions will put the city at greater risk for illnesses due to Covid-19,” Climaco said. “Nohay kita falta na de aton maga aviso con el publico. Necesita gayot el suporta y cooperacion de todo amediante este pandemia.” Just recently, Climaco met with Regional Health Director Dr. Emilia Monicimpo, City Health Officer, Dr. Dulce Miravite and Councilor Jimmy Villaflores, the mayor’s action officer on health; and the chiefs of different hospitals here, as well as the representative of the local chapter of the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines and dis-
cussed further preparations amid the spike in Covid-19 cases. She also had a meeting with City Police Director Colonel Thomas Joseph Martir and Task Force Zamboanga Commander Colonel John Divinagracia, City Administrator Apple Go and Councilor Josephine Pareja and discussed the strict implementation of MGCQ guidelines. Many residents had been reported to have violated the health protocols, especially the wearing of face masks in public places, and for not carrying their quarantine pass. Dozens of motorcycle riders were also apprehended carrying passengers which is not allowed by the national task force on Covid-19. Climaco reminded residents to always carry their quarantine pass if they go out for work or to buy essential goods. “The (use of ) quarantine pass will continue to be in effect under MGCQ for all residents to manage the influx of crowds in accessing essential goods and services at the malls, public markets, supermarkets, groceries and pharmacies and other essential busi-
ness establishments.” “The prohibition in back-riding in motorcycles is a national IATF guideline and the City Government is just complying with the order. We understand the concern and demands for its lifting but the City cannot do otherwise but to follow it, as it is a national law and forms part of the health protocol to fight against Covid-19,” she said. Climaco said residents should all the more be compliant of quarantine guidelines and follow the minimum health standards. “Strict compliance of the guidelines and the minimum health standards should be a personal responsibility of each and every resident of the city,” she said. Like a scene from Wuhan Last week, two men were rushed to hospital after they collapsed one after the other in downtown Zamboanga and panicking people near them amid the rising number of coronavirus cases here. Policemen and civilians were spotted trying to revive one man - as he was gasping for air - and unaware whether he was
stricken with the deadly viral disease. Ambulance workers clad in protective suit quickly removed the two men on stretchers and both remain unidentified. It was not immediately known why the two collapsed or if they are carrying the virus that had killed at least 8 people here with the latest fatality recorded only on Saturday. The scene was reminiscent of what had happened in the Chinese city of Wuhan where the virus originated in December last year. People were collapsing on the streets due to Covid-19. Climaco told residents to maintain cleanliness and avoid holding their face, nose, mouth and eyes and frequently wash hands with soap and water, and always wear
face mask and observe physical distancing – at least a meter apart from each other in public places. “We continue to appeal to the public to remain vigilant, strictly comply with MGCQ guidelines and continuously practice minimum health standards - wear face mask, frequently wash hands, observe physical distancing and avoid non-essential movement or activities,” she said. LSIs, ROFs Just this month, hundreds of residents stranded from other places and OFWs had arrived here by bus from Cagayan de Oro City, and dozens of deportees from Sabah were ferried back home. The local deportees were immediately brought to a quarantine
facility as part of the strict health protocols before they are sent home. The Department of Social Welfare and Development said the first batch of 395 deportees and 300 of them disembarked in Tawi-Tawi, had undergone Covid-19 rapid testing in Sabah prior to their departure, but they still need to undertake coronavirus testing again when they reach the country as part of the government’s health protocols. Sabah is set to deport some 5,300 Filipinos illegally staying in the rich Malaysian state just several hours by boat from Tawi-Tawi. They are now being held at four congested jails after it temporarily suspended the repatriation since March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. (Zamboanga Post)
Zambo gears up for new anti-polio drive
Mayor Beng Climaco leads the anti-polio drive in this photo taken in October 2019 in Barangay Santa Catalina. FOLLOWING THE successful anti-polio campaign here in February, Mayor Beng Climaco has urged parents to have their children immunized against polio, a highly contagious disease transmitted through the fecal-oral route and may result in life-long paralysis and even death. Climaco said the City Health Office (CHO) is now gearing up for the “Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio 3” for the bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) which will begin on July 20 until August 2 for children aged zero to below 10 years old in an effort to contain and eradicate polio here. Hardworking health workers also underwent a series of orientation on the minimum health standards, as well as infection control protocols amid the coronavirus
pandemic, according to Climaco, who thanked the World Health Organization for its technical assistance, and Department of Health (DOH) for providing logistics. “Even as the City Health Office takes the lead in contact tracing and treatment of Covid-19 cases, it is likewise immersed in its other mandated tasks such as the Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio round 3 slated on July 20 to August 2 for children aged zero to below 10 years old in Zamboanga City,” she said. Climaco reminded the public, especially children, to constantly wash hands with soap and for parents to always observe sanitary preparation of food and drinks. She said there is no cure for polio, but it can only be prevented with three doses of the polio vac-
cine. In the last anti-polio drive, the local government vaccinated 221,917 children – more than 8% from the target. Last September 19, the DOH announced a polio outbreak in the Philippines and launched a synchronized polio vaccination campaign which aims to boost immunization coverage against polio by giving three doses of the oral polio vaccine to all children regardless of their immunization status. The Philippines has seen a decline of immunization coverage in the past few years, including for protection against polio. In 2018, at least 66% of children completed their oral polio vaccine (drops) doses and 45% received their inactivated polio vaccine (injection) dose. (Zamboanga Post)

Keep surroundings clean, dengue-free, residents told
Aedes aegypti mosquito. (CDC Global)
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Mayor Beng Climaco reminded residents to keep their yard clean and destroy breeding places of mosquitoes following the death of a villager from dengue fever. Climaco renewed calls for public cooperation and community involvement in the campaign against the spread of the deadly virus caused by mosquito bites, mainly of the species Aedes aegypti. Dengue fever is a tropical disease caused by the dengue virus and its symptoms typical-
ly begin 3 to 14 days after infection and these may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. Climaco ordered barangay officials to help in the campaign against dengue and lead villagers in the cleanliness driver by destroying breeding grounds of mosquitoes. “Please keep our surroundings clean at all time and destroy breeding places of mosquitoes, such as discarded containers, tires and broken (flower) pots,” Climaco said.
City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite also confirmed the first dengue casualty in Barangay Kasanyangan. She said they have recorded over 300 dengue cases in June in Barangays Santa Maria, Mercedes, Talon-Talon, Tetuan, and San Roque. “To prevent dengue fever, the City Health Office advocates the practice of 4S habits – search and destroy mosquito breeding places, self-protection measures, seek early consultation, and say no to indiscriminate fogging,” Miravite said.
“Residents are encouraged to keep their homes and to clear potential mosquito-breeding places which typically are areas that have stagnant water such as uncovered water containers, flower vases, gutters, unused tires, among others,” she added. Last year, the City Health Office recorded 23 deaths from dengue fever and over 4,000 suspected dengue cases here in the first 8 months alone. (Jasmine Mohammadsali and Zamboanga Post)
