Pigs (wirestock/Freepik) ZAMBOANGA CITY has banned the entry of pork from Luzon and many provinces in Mindanao

where there are reported cases of the African swine fever or ASF. Mayor Beng Climaco

said the local government imposed the ban not only on pork, but processed pork products as well from the whole island of Luzon and Panabo City, Talaingod and Santo Tomas towns in Davao del Norte, and all municipalities or areas in Davao del Sur except the town of Hagonoy; and the Davao Occidental towns of Jose Abad Santos, Don Marcelino, Malita and Santa Maria. Beng joins President Duterte’s call for unity MAYOR BENG Climaco joined President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for unity as the country continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic. “This pandemic calls for a united country to heal together as one. We pray for our President, for all our leaders and frontliners and for the safety of everyone in these trying times! Vaya con Dios!” said Climaco, who was invited to attend Duterte’s State of the Nation Address (SONA). In the SONA, Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte and Mayor Beng Climaco also praised all those who sacrificed their lives – the

Beng joins President Duterte’s call for unity Continued from page 1 us express the nation’s gratitude to those who courageously and willingly put their lives on the line to serve the people and country. We share the grief of their families and no amount of tears can compensate their great losses.” And recognized efforts of the local government units (LGUs) in battling the pandemic. “Let me also recognize the efforts of the local government units that stepped up and initiated their own response measures to contain the effects of Covid-19 and its impact to their constituents.” “I know exactly the difficulties you are undergoing. I pray that the officials of each LGU in our country – from the barangay to the autonomous regions – would set aside partisan politics and selfish interests to do what is right and good for all,” Duterte said. Climaco also reflected on Duterte’s statement and called on everyone to put politics aside and help instead in ensuring the welfare of the people. The Philippines now has over 55,000 active Covid cases with the National Capital Region, Laguna, Cebu, Cavite

and Davao del Sur as among the highest number of coronavirus infection. Zamboanga City has also recorded more than 250 active coronavirus cases, according to the local task force Covid-19 headed by Climaco. Climaco has repeatedly appealed to residents to strictly follow the quarantine guidelines and observe physical distancing and the wearing of face mask when in public places. The spike in Covid cases here started when the national government allowed the return of locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), including deportees from Sabah. Zamboanga recorded its last community Covid transmission early in April, but infection continued among prisoners at the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center. And this was aggravated by the return of the LSIs and the “Balik Probinsya Program” introduced by Senator Bong Go. Now, over 30 of Zamboanga’s 98 barangays have reported Covid cases - San Jose Gusu Santo Nino, Calarian Santa Maria, Camino Nuevo, Campo Islam, Mampang, Arena Blanco, Bali-

wasan, Cabatangan, Canelar, Cawit, Culianan, Divisoria, Kasanyangan, Labuan, Maasin, Mercedes, Pasonanca, Putik, Salaan, San Jose Cawa-Cawa, San Roque, Sangali, Sinunuc, Sta. Barbara, Santa Catalina, Talon-Talon, Tetuan, Tugbungan, Tumaga, Zambowood, Zone I, Zone II, and Zone IV. City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite also confirmed the sudden increase in the number of Covid cases was due to the influx of LSIs, and local community transmissions. “Covid-19 infections does not choose whom to infect. All of us are at risk of getting infected,” Miravite said noting the disease has infected individuals of all ages, from all walks of life and profession. She echoed Climaco’s repeated appeals for residents to always practice the minimum public health measures of wearing face mask, regular hand washing, and physical distancing. “We will have to live with COVID for a while until a vaccine will be available. Let us care for each other, let us protect each other,” Miravite said. (Zamboanga Post. With additional report from Jasmine Mohammadsali.)

Zambo to put up walk paths, bike lanes Continued from page 1 the Cobid-19 pandemic. Climaco said the establishment of bicycle lanes is also pursuant to the order of Interior Secretary Eduardo Año who said the national government is encouraging citizens to consider bicycles as the new primary mode of transportation. Año issued Memorandum Circular 2020-100 which directs and provides guidelines for local governments to establish a network of cycling lanes and walking paths. Under the guidelines, local government units will revisit and improve existing transportation plans to prioritize the establishment of lanes dedicated for active transport and light mobility. “Yung bicycle, pino-promote natin na maging primary mode of transportation. Mag-uutos

In this new normal, we want to encourage everyone to use bikes. Very safe ang bikes, at saka, matipid pa. Climaco, who advocates physical fitness, said biking promotes good health and a good workout because it uses all major muscle groups as you pedal. Quoting Better Health Channel, she said unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. It increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness. It is also time-efficient and as a mode of transport, cycling replaces sedentary (sitting) time spent driving motor vehicles or using jeepney or tricycle - with healthy exercise.

It said cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level. The health benefits of regular cycling include increased cardiovascular fitness, increased muscle strength and flexibility, improved joint mobility, decreased stress levels, improved posture and coordination, strengthened bones, decreased body fat levels, prevention or management of disease and reduced anxiety and depression. But Climaco reminded that bikers or cyclists must always wear face masks and proper safety gear such as helmet, among others. (Zamboanga Post)

‘Go and Be the Mayor’ ‘Beng swabbed anew, negative for deadly virus’

Mayor Beng Climaco at work as usual. Continued from page 1 Facebook page, recalling the moment she was told to undergo a sec-

ond Covid test after a colleague at work contracted the respiratory disease. The fear of getting the

virus and infecting loved ones and other people was instant for the mayor - that feeling of paranoia

Wearing of face mask cuts Covid transmission by 85%, says DOH

A man wearing mask (Zamboanga Post) AMID reports of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, which is the causative agent of Covid-19, being airborne, the Department of Health (DOH) stressed the importance of wearing a face mask as part of the prescribed minimum health standards to ensure utmost protection from the deadly virus. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said this is the reason why healthcare workers use N95 masks. She said although more definitive studies are necessary for non-healthcare settings, the public is enjoined to wear masks and practice the minimum health standards to reduce the transmission of the virus.

This were also the repeated appeals to residents of Zamboanga Mayor Beng Climaco and City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite Vergeire said the effectiveness of personal protective equipment, such as face masks, face

shields, and physical distancing must not be underestimated. “According to studies, wearing masks lowers the chance of transmission by up to 85%, while maintaining a physical distance of one meter reduces the risk of transmission by 80%,” she said. She urged the public to work together in protecting the vulnerable sector. She also called on the public to become part of the solution by staying vigilant and following the prescribed health protocols. (Zamboanga Post)

- but Climaco’s strong faith in God and prayers were her weapons to fight Covid. “This week, God tested my faith once more as Covid continues to manifest its presence on people, in the workplace and to those who are dear to me. We were required to have ourselves swabbed for the second time due to exposure to Covid-positive colleagues at the workplace. There is a paralyzing paranoia that this pandemic brings - sadness and helplessness, seeing those dear to me infected and that double edge sword that, I myself can also infect members of my own household and my loved ones,” she said. “But we need to fight our fear and bravely submit to be tested once again. What I also feared most is the possibility of infecting my husband, my dear Mama Lu and the seniors at home because of my exposure and compounded with the bigger problem of rising con-

firmed Covid cases and yes, the responsibility too of taking care of the entire Zamboanga City in my hands. I always resort to prayer, asking God to direct and guide me in all these trials. After being tested, I sought the intercession of Nuestra Señora La Virgen Pilar!” Climaco wrote in her Sunday reflection. “I kept praying and with Mama Mary and Jesus, God’s message was ‘Go and be the Mayor’, I held on counting my prayers with my husband beside me. The challenges continue and I realize, people matter and our health is wealth for us to help heal others too! Paz de Dios! Do not give up! God’s love will triumph in our multiple trials!” Climaco said. In her reflection, the hardworking mayor said the responsibility was so heavy with the fear of infecting others. “I have personal fears and hung on to God to keep my peace and stability because of my

duty to serve Zamboanga. After the virtual mass, my student Dr. Justin Paber (of the Zamboanga City Medical Center), informed me of the negative test results. Thanks be to God!” And she also quoted three Parables in the Bible, reflecting on the chapter and verses of the Book of Matthew 13:44-52 about the Kingdom of Heaven, and despite being under immense pressure and burden of taking care not only herself, her family and loved ones and her people, Climaco managed to carry on and continues her duties as the Mother of Zamboanga and Mayor to all. Early in July, Climaco also underwent Covid-19 testing and was swabbed after she was exposed to an infected official who was recently in Zamboanga with other guests who delivered equipment for the biomolecular laboratory of the Philippine Red Cross. She turned out negative for the virus. (Zamboanga Post)

AFS virus which is transmitted to pigs through direct contact with infected pigs, their waste, contaminated clothing, feed, equipment and vehicles, and in some cases, some tick species. Although ASF cannot be transmitted to humans through contact with pigs or pork, the virus causes a haemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in domestic pigs; some isolates can cause death of animals as quickly as a week after infection. Climaco also praised border guards and local authorities for their strict implementation of safety measures to ensure that Zamboanga remains free from ASF amid the Covid-19 pandemic. She also sought the cooperation of all stakeholders and strongly advised pork sellers to secure the necessary permits or documents from local or the National Meat Inspection Service. “We seek the cooper-

ation of all livestock transporters and dealers to acquire pigs from local hog producers or from ASF-free localities to support our local swine industry. Transport of livestock is governed by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Administrative Circular 12, series of 2019.” “In the same manner, we advise all sellers to secure pork and pork products that were inspected and passed Local or National Meat Inspection Service standards and demand for the meat inspection certificate for the day as proof of inspection. Let us keep Zamboanga City ASF Free,” Climaco said. Last June, local authorities destroyed over 200 kilos of confiscated processed meat and chicken products which came from Cebu City. The Bureau of Animal Industry and the DA seized the meat products from a boat after alert security guards and port police inspected the vessel to ensure they were free from the ASF virus. The meat products - 194 kilos of processed meats and 30 kilos of chicken products - had been mis-declared and did not have documents. It

was all burned in the presence of representatives from the Food and Drug Administration, the Meat Inspection Service and DA. Climaco said the City Veterinary Office continues to strictly implement the DA guidelines of zoning and protocols with regards to the movement, sale, and trade of hogs, pork and pork products to contain the spread of ASF in the country. She signed early this year the Executive Order 543–2020 in support to the DA guidelines and also in pursuant to President Rodrigo Duterte’s order urging local and national government agencies to harmonize efforts with the DA in stopping the spread of ASF. Checkpoints have been placed in entry and exit points in Zamboanga since last year to ensure that no infected hogs and its pork products slip past the city. She said personnel from the City Veterinarian Office continue to inspect and conduct disinfection of trucks transporting live pigs and other animals to Zamboanga to protect the hog population against the ASF.

Kailangan magpa-check up agad sa isang cardiologist.

Huwag mangamba.
