Spike in Covid recoveries noted, frontliners lauded Continued from page 1 cases here which is a little over 1,000. Most of those whosuccumbed to Covid-19 had underlying illnesses. The active Covid-19 cases are at least 400, mostly due to communitytransmission. Of the 400 patients, about five dozen of them are locallystranded individuals who recently returned home from various places where thereare large numbers of coronavirus infection, according to Climaco. She again reminded residents to always observe physicaldistancing and wear face mask and face shield when in public places, and tofrequently sanitize or wash hands with soap and water. “Let us not forget the health protocols and (community) quarantineguidelines and please, as I always remind everyone to wear a face mask and faceshield, observe physical distancing and wash hands with soap and water orsanitize them. Avoid holding your face – eyes, nose and mouth – and that is thebest way to prevent (Covid-19) infection and most of all, pray to God that Heprotect us from this disease,” Climaco said. She also thanked all medical frontliners and barangay healthworkers and barangay captains for

their dedication to serve and even risk theirown health to save others.“There are no words to express my gratitude to all thosewho work hard to protect and save the others. I thanked you all for yourbravery and love for the others,” Climaco said.Last week, Climaco said as part of the“whole of government” approach to tackle the pandemic and more effectivereporting of Covid statistics, the local government will soon launch adedicated site for all related data. She said the local government will put up the Zamboanga CityCovid-19 Data Center and it will be a one-stop repository and online trackerthat will synchronize and centralize Covid-19 management data such as real-timeupdates for confirmed coronavirus cases, testing numbers, case mapping inbarangays, and other relevant information. The online tracker, according to the mayor, will alsohighlights up-to-date count of confirmed and suspected Covid-19 cases, including the breakdown of cases according to type, identification, sex, ageand status. “It will also have data and figures for the occupan-

cy statusof quarantine and isolation facilities and private and public hospitals as wellas the inventory of equipment, supplies and PPEs in hospital establishments,”she said, adding, a contact tracing form and a database of all Covid-19 relatedexecutive orders will also be made accessible to the public. Climaco said the Zamboanga City Covid-19 Data Center is partof the local government’s continued efforts to fight the spread of the diseasein all fronts, and ensure the dissemination of relevant, timely, andimportant information amid the spread of fake news and false information thistime of crisis. She said the project is a joint undertaking of the ComputerServices Division of the Office of the City Mayor, the Research, Evaluation andStatistics Division of the Office of the City Planning and DevelopmentCoordinator, and the Surveillance Unit of the Office of the City Health Officer. The technical assistance in the developmentof the tracker is also provided by the Ateneo De Zamboanga University, theNational Resilience Council and the Local Government of Baguio City. Any person caught not wearing the standard protective motorcycle helmet in violation of this Act shall be punished with a fine of One thousand five hundred pesos (P1,500) for the first offense; Three thousand pesos (P3,000) for the second offense; Five thousand pesos (P5,000) for the third offense; and Ten thousand pesos (P10,000) plus confiscation of the driver’s license for the fourth and succeeding offenses.” Ayon kay Abaton: “The nutshell helmet is not consistent with the provisions of the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009 or RA 10054. Either the J-type helmet or the full-face (visor) helmet will be allowed, as it is authorized under the law.”

“The LTO fully supports the position of the National IATF (Inter-agency Task Force 0n Emerging Infectious Diseases) and the (Zamboanga) City Government and we are in sync with Executive Order 591 of Mayor Beng Climaco,” dagdag pa ni Abaton. “Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the LTO has been implementing the Motorcycle Helmet Act for the safety and protection of motorists, thus, the Mayor’s executive order (complying with the order of the National IATF) should be implemented by the police to the fullest,” wika nito. Nagbabala rin ang Department of the Interior and Local Government ukol dito

at sinabi ni Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya ang motorcycle driver at angkas nito ay dapat gumamit ng face mask at full-face helmet. “Both riders (driver and back rider) must wear face masks and full-face helmets at all times while back-riding to ensure compliance with minimum health standards,” paliwanag ni Malaya. Beng leads food distribution on Santa Cruz Island CHIEF COVID frontliner Mayor Beng Climaco led social workers in distributing food packs to families living on Santa Cruz Island off Zamboanga City. She also brought and distributed personal protective equipment for the members of the Protective Area and Management Office (PAMO) on the island and thanked them for guarding Santa Cruz, one of the best tourist destinations in the South. Climaco said PAMO members are working and ensure the island and its surrounding water is protected from poachers and illegal fishermen, adding, the Santa Cruz Island known for its pink and powdery sands and pristine water and best snorkelling site - is to reopen

soon. Zamboanga City amid the coronavirus pandemic - is now under a more relax Moderate General Community Quarantine (MGCQ) and tourist destinations, including beaches and resorts, as well as libraries, archives, museums and cultural centers may operate at 50% operational capacity subject to certain conditions which may be imposed by the Department of Trade and Industry. Climaco said strict safety guidelines and health protocols must be in place before local tourist destinations can reopen. City Tourism Officer Sarita Hernandez also explained that rules and regulations for this development must first be

studied and finalized. “We are still finalizing the guidelines as far as the reopening of Santa Cruz Island y tambien el Once Islas. Bajo na MGCQ, tiene cuantos maga tourist sites que puede acomoda con el maga visita o turista but then we have to follow some guidelines,” she said. Hernandez said this can include limiting the carrying capacity of tourist destinations as well as the imposition of rules, regulations, and health protocols that is under the new normal. “Other tourist sites that can reopen are the (Zamboanga) Golf (Club) Course (and Beach Club) and the City Museum,” she said. Tight security for Zambo Mayor Beng Climaco Continued from page 1 for quickly responding to her heightened alert directives. She said shortly after the explosions in Jolo, the military and the police immediately deployed sea and land patrols and personnel in downtown Zamboanga as part of precautionary measures. The mayor also appealed to residents to stay vigilant and alert and cooperate with authorities by reporting suspicious individual or unattended bags and containers which could possibly contain explosives. Suicide Bombers Philippine Army chief Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said the attacks were

carried out by a pair of suicide bombers – one of them was an Indonesian widow of Abu Sayyaf suicide bomber Norman Lasuca, who blew himself up outside a military base and killed 8 people in Sulu’s Indanan town last year. The other suicide bomber, he added, was the wife of an Abu Sayyaf explosives expert Talha Jumsa, who was also slain in a clash with soldiers in Patikul town, also in Sulu. Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said the first explosion was near two military trucks and followed by another blast minutes later while soldiers and police-

men were rushing to the scene to aid the victims. The 11th Infantry Division in Sulu said 8 soldiers and one policeman were killed and 24 soldiers and six policemen were also wounded in the bombings. It said six civilians also died and 48 others were injured in the attacks. “The severely wounded individuals were airlifted to Zamboanga City for more extensive medical care,” it said. The Joint Task Force Sulu also imposed stricter security in Jolo following the daring attacks. “The Joint Task Force Sulu is implementing more stringent security measures to prevent further atrocities. We urge the public to re-

main calm and be vigilant for suspicious individuals,” it said. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of soldiers, policemen, and civilians who perished and offered the ultimate sacrifice. Rest assured that we will bring into justice those who are responsible in these twin bombing incidents,” it added. ISIS ISIS has claimed responsibility for the blasts. Authorities said the Abu Sayyaf, a small group notorious for its brutal campaign for a self-rule and whose leaders pledged allegiance to ISIS, was behind the bombings. The daring attacks occurred barely two weeks after security forces arrested a senior Abu Sayyaf leader, Idang Susukan, from the house of former rebel chieftain Nur Misuari, chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front, in Davao City. Susukan reportedly surrendered in April to Misuari in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region, and brought him to Davao on a private jet

to have him fitted with a prosthetic arm after losing one arm in a bloody battle with soldiers in the province. It was unclear whether the twin bombings were in retaliation of the Abu Sayyaf for Susukan’s arrest. U.S. Warning Just this month, the U.S. Department of State warned Americans to stay away from the restive southern region due to terrorism. “Do not travel to the Sulu Archipelago, including the southern Sulu Sea, due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. (And) Marawi City in Mindanao due to terrorism and civil unrest,” it said in an up-

dated advisory August 7. “Terrorist and armed groups continue plotting possible kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks in the Philippines. Terrorist and armed groups may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, markets/ shopping malls, and local government facilities. The Philippine government has declared a State of National Emergency on Account of Lawless Violence in Mindanao,” it added. The bombings were timed while the country is battling the spread of the coronavirus that had killed nearly 3,000 people since the start of the pandemic in March. (Zamboanga Post)

SUNDAY REFLECTION by Mayor Beng Climaco Matthew 16:13-20

“Relax lang ikaw my Ate Beng. It’s really sad and pains me to hear na malapit ka nang mag-break because of stress. I’ll include you always in my prayers, kaya mo yan Ate Beng. We (your original Brito Boys) will always be here” – Jojo

IT WAS a Thursday, Amun Jadid (Muslim New Year Holiday) and we were working in City Hall fixing the system for Covid Response with a group of doctors. I happen to notice one solitary person I could not identify in the meeting, but went to offer breakfast. As the meeting proceeded toward noon, I asked Dr. Justin Paber who is Dr. Soria, then the stranger identified himself! Lo and behold it was Dr. Joel “Jojo” Soria, my student. It was such a humbling experience for me to listen and learn from my students. With us was Dr. Noel Tarazona, helping us with USAID Reach Health Program that trained barangays. Among them was my Barangay Chairman in Santa Maria, Los Eli Angeles, who was also my student. It was in 1990 when I had my first moderating class with freshmen and junior all-male students were assigned to me - the St. John de Britto Batch of 1992. This was a litmus test

for me and I was very nervous and wanted to give-up after three days. The boys were in the prime of their teens and it was a “welcome to the jungle” moment that time. One Saturday, we had a general cleaning and I had to buy a brick red paint for the floor and put-up curtains for our classroom. That beautiful change of atmosphere was palpable for the boys and a tweak of inspiration for them. I bought pancit for our lunch in Pasonanca pool, and poor Teacher Beng had no food left as the boys voraciously wiped out the bread and pansit because they were hungry. Mr. Oscar Carzada, my principal back then, encouraged me not to give-up and let the students “taste a sense of victory.” I remembered it was September after class and during classroom cleaning I called the boys and shared popsicles since it was my birthday. They were all sweaty. And that was when I realised my love for my

students and my passion for teaching. For the Novena to Fort Pilar, we had the procession and attended the mass. On the way home, we walked to the City Hall and the boys went up the stage, what could I do but joined them too. I have never imagined one day I would be on stage years later. We rode the jeep home to Santa Maria. By October, the Third Year, St. John de Britto Class won the “Marian Altar with Our Blessed Mother”. A table borrowed from Glen Usman, who used to sell newspapers, bougainvilleas from Santa Maria. The Boys had a taste of victory and I became their “Ate Beng” for life! When the boys were preparing for high school graduation, I was no longer their teacher. But Jojo Soria wrote a class prophecy. In 15 years, he wrote his projection for his classmates, he said that their teacher, Maribel Climaco would be a “Representative to Congress”! Of course at that time we kept

this as a Rite of Passage, a tradition for the graduating class, until it became a reality in 2007. I was blessed by God to be the Congresswoman! Jojo and his sister Jing were both my students, the older being part of my Brito boys, the younger my Britto babies of which I moderated. Today, they are both doctors. Indeed, we can never fathom the mind of our students. They may be young, full of energy and dreams. But their dreams can be a reality. They keep me on my toes, because of the training I had as teacher and I must always be prepared with my lesson plan. I have always respected their views and allowed them to express themselves and fight for their rights. But this time around it is my students who teach me.

I am immensely humbled, honoured and grateful to God for being part of their lives. I am so blessed that they are helping me run the City. Just last Saturday, the Feast of Mary’s Queenship, the classmates were interviewed by another Britto student, Eugene Las Prillas, a news anchor and Barangay Kagawad. This is the greatest consolation of any teacher - to see their students with hearts full of love, kindness and are contributing to the community with their God-given gifts. Matthew 16:18 was Jesus’s declaration to Peter his Prophecy of establishing God’s Church. This is the essence of Fundamental Ecclesiology from the class I had in Theology by Fr. Daniel Huang, SJ, fresh from his studies in the Catholic Uni-

versity of America. The Foundation of the Church by Jesus. Thank you so much to all my students. Salamat talaga sa inyong dasal at pag-alala. Thank you this time for encouraging me to keep fighting, just as I did when we had our lessons for you to pass, and how we cheered in your basketball games. Today, you give me courage to go on because YOU all matter in my life. And YOU fill me with so much joy. God, with La Virgen del Pilar, has indeed blessed my life as your teacher. Dear Jesus, in your firm command to Peter, may we discover our purpose and your mission for our life. Thank you so much for those whose lives we have encountered. May we be a blessing to each other. St. John de Britto, Pray for us. Amen.

Zamboanga shows what love of humanity, compassion is all about Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio and most, if not all, sought government aid after losing their jobs in Manila due to the pandemic. Climaco has ordered Hernandez and social workers to attend to the needs of the LSIs and returning overseas workers. President Rodrigo Duterte has repeatedly appealed to all local governments to accept LSIs and repatriated overseas Filipino workers who are returning to their respective home provinces. “Ang pakiusap lang na tanggapin lang ‘yung mga LGUs — tanggapin nila ‘yung mga tao, pakiusap,” he said, adding, local offi-

cials do not have the power to deny them their right to return to their homes and love ones because it would just create problems for them. The presence of Covid-19 asymptomatic individuals to the batches of LSIs going home could not be a ground to restrict their return to their places of origin, Duterte said. “You do not even know if he’s contaminated or not. If he’s not, then you still refuse him tapos magkaroon kahit sabi mo wala. Maloloko. You’ll run into a gamut of so many problems. Even if they are actually contaminated, if they want to go home maybe to get well or to die

there, hindi mo ma-deny sa Pilipino ‘yan,” he said. The Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases headed by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said they have sent home a total of 56,000 overseas Filipino workers to the provinces. And also expects the arrival of some 40,000 more from different parts of the world in two months, Lorenzana added, citing reports from the Department of Labor. He said thousands of LSIs are still stranded in Metro Manila awaiting their return schedules. (Zamboanga Post)

MAYOR BENG CLIMACO said the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is all set for the conduct of the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) and urged residents to support the government’s survey. She said the public and CPH enumerators must strictly follow the health protocols amid the current crisis brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. “Please observe physical distancing and wear a face mask or face shield. The census shall start on September 1 and will run until September 29,” Climaco said. This was also confirmed by Chief Statistical Specialist Conrad Sontillano, of the Philippine Statistics Authority in Zamboanga Peninsula.

He said some 949 people were hired and trained as enumerators. He said the enumerators are equipped with personal protective equipment when they go house-to-house in all 98 barangays here for the census. The CPH was originally scheduled in May, but this had been moved to September due to the pandemic. The last census in Zamboanga City was conducted in 2015 where it registered a total population of 861,799. Among the barangay which have the highest population were Talon-Talon, Mampang, Tumaga, Tetuan, Calarian, San Roque, Pasonanca, Santa Maria, Baliwasan and Tugbungan. The CPH is a nation-
