Beng pays tribute to fallen heroes

Zamboanga City Hall Continued from page 1 and celebrate the stories of people who sacrificed their precious lives in defense of Zamboanga against infamy. “The 38 fallen heroes of 9-9-13 (September 9, 2013) laid their lives for a cause which is deeply respected and appreciated by all Zamboanguenos,” she said. In her speech, Climaco said Zamboangueños will forever remember the heroism of those who perished in the siege. “El ciudad de Zamboanga ya recibi grande golpe por causa del maga MNLF que ya tiene el deseo para ataca con el de atun ciudad. Este tiempo, ta amora kita con de atun maga heroes…heroes desde del AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) y tambien diferente fuerza del militar que ya dale el de ila vida por la amor y proteccion del projimo.” “En calor de govierno local, este dia ta rinde kita gracias and we pay our tribute to the lives of our heroes – 38 men, women and children; 20 from the Philippine National Police, five from the AFP and 13 civilians – they have given their lives for the protection of Zamboanga City. As we commemorate their heroism, may we never forget the sacrifices that they have given to Zamboanga City by giving their very own life. May we remember them with our prayers to God, to Allah that the Lord will grant them eternal rest. We also recall 13 civilians and more than 300 who died as a consequence of the Zamboanga siege, remembering the three-year old (boy) who was shot in the head and had given his life as well.”

Maj. Gen. Jose Chiquito Malayo, Director of the Philippine National Police Academy, also gave out a speech from his office in Cavite’s Silang town. Special Day of Remembarnce Last year, Climaco set September 9 as a “Special Day of Remembrance” in honor of all those who died in the attack. Supporters of Misuari attacked Zamboanga after declaring independence following their failed attempt to raise the Bangsamoro Republik flag at City Hall. The siege displaced over 100,000 people and affected the economies of Basilan and Sulu which are dependent on Zamboanga for their trades and goods. Misuari publicly denied involvement in the siege of Zamboanga. In 2016, Climaco – who stood firm against the MNLF during the entire period of the crisis – banned any so-called peace rally or gathering of the MNLF members in Zamboanga City. She said such rallies will not be allowed in the as this might disturb Zamboanga anew. Climaco said the destruction wrought by the 2013 siege continues to linger, as internally displaced persons – both Muslims, Christians and Lumads, most of whom are those who eluded the conflicts in Sulu and Basilan – have suffered the brunt of the MNLF attack in Zamboanga. Misuari signed a peace deal with Manila in September 1996 ending decades of bloody war. After the peace agreement was signed, Misuari became the governor of the Muslim autonomous region. But despite the peace accord, he

said there was a widespread disillusionment with the weak autonomy they were granted. Under the peace agreement, Manila would have to provide a mini-Marshal Plan to spur economic development in Muslim areas in the south and livelihood and housing assistance to tens of thousands of former rebels to uplift their poor living standards. It was the second attack by MNLF in the past decade. In November 2001, hundreds of MNLF members occupied the Cabatangan Complex and held hostage dozens of civilians, including children; and another group also attacked a military base in Sulu province in an effort to stop the elections in the Muslim autonomous region after Misuari was ousted as governor. More than 100 people were killed in the fighting and in the end, then Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat allowed the attackers to leave Zamboanga in exchange for the hostages. Misuari then escaped by boat to Malaysia, where he had been arrested and deported to the Philippines and was eventually pardoned and released by President Gloria Arroyo in exchange for MNLF support to her election bid as well as her allies in the Senate and Congress in 2004. He also ran several times for governor in Sulu even while under detention, but lost. Now, President Rodrigo Duterte said he wanted to resume the peace process with Misuari and ordered police and military not to arrest the MNLF chieftain. (Zamboanga Post)

‘City of Flowers’ gets U.S. donation Continued from page 1 environmental and fishery protection in Zamboanga City, whose moniker is “City of Flowers” because of its greenery. The donation was coursed recently through the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) and the Office of the City Agriculturist (OCA), according to Mayor Beng Climaco, who thanked the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The equipment will help in the daily operations of OCENR and OCA in maintaining their data base intended for recording, retrieving and analysing data related to apprehensions, seizures and other information related to enforcing environmental and fishery laws here. Dr. Reynaldo Navacilla, Field Site Manager of USAID Protect Wildlife Project, handed over the donation - including environmental plans that were developed in partnership with the local government and techni-

cal assistance from the USAID – to Climaco, who was joined by City Administrator Apple Go, OCENR chief Rey Gonzales and OCA representatives. The documents included the Zamboanga City Central Mangroves Framework, Ayala Watershed Management and Development Plan and Manicahan Watershed Management and Development Plan, Zamboanga City Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the Environment Code of the City of Zamboanga. The P1.2-billion, five year, Protect Wildlife biodiversity conservation project was launched in March 2017 by the U.S. government through USAID which partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and aims to help protect and manage the country’s diverse habitats and species. The project is also designed to address biodiversity loss and illegal wildlife trade in some of the most vibrant and vulnerable ecosystems in

the country. And it uses a comprehensive strategy that combines technical assistance for government and civil society partners, partnerships for conservation financing, behavior change campaigns and social marketing, science and technology, and environmental law enforcement. This holistic approach promotes partnership among environmental stakeholders and empowers those best positioned to address biodiversity loss and the illegal wildlife trade. Aside from Zamboanga City, the provinces of Tawi-Tawi and Palawan, which host some of the most bio-diverse habitats and unique species in the country, are included in the project because they are also exposed to various human-induced threats such as poaching and trafficking of wildlife, destructive fishing practices, and loss of habitats from widespread conversion of forests, wetlands, and mangroves to settlements and agricultural lands. Quarantine protocols, mas hihigpitan pa! Continued from page 1 inilatag ng Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases ng pamahalaang Duterte.

antine protocols. Maging ang Joint Task Force Shield ng PNP sa pamumuno ni Lt. Gen.

“The social media are full of photos and evidence of hard-headed people deliberately violating the quarantine protocols. These can be used as pieces of evidence to warn, to fine and to summon the people concerned in coordination with the barangay officials concerned,” ani Eleazar. (Zamboanga Post)

IN TODAY’S homily, Fr. The devotion to the twin hearts of Jesus and Mary.” Yesterday, in an Interview by Al Alhabshi (of TV11), I was asked with all I had, what are our plans with my husband to bear a child? I was in the cemetery visiting my parents and offering prayers at that time. In a small cubicle was Jose Maria Trifonia Climaco-Salazar, who at five months resulted to an ectopic pregnancy. I almost died but losing her life was a great suffering. Today (September is Mama Mary’s birthday. Jesus’ attachment and love could not deny His mother the miracle in the wedding of Cana as attested by Fr. Jude. Miss Universe

Sushmita Sen in 1977 said the “essence of a woman is being a mother”! Motherhood for me goes beyond the act of child bearing. Women have the inborn capacity to nurture and nourish that balances with man’s act to provide, to protect and to toil. Amongst many greetings I got yesterday were greetings from my God-children who call me “Nanay” - the Lapu2x Warriors, the Super-friends and the Super Family born out of friendship as they were Company Commanders during their military service in Zamboanga. Another officer in the Air Force greeted me “MA” as he is an adopted son when he was still a cadet. I was also greeted by my students - my special sons whose unique abilities made them dream beyond what I could

imagine, Atty. Martin Loon and Atty. Kenneth Vincent Beldua, the BC Team, and my Step Children and Apos. Our eldest, Tania, sent me a wonderful birthday message expressing how I inspire her toward a big future and said how, me, as her Lola, has the capacity to make everyone in the family feel loved and being cared for! This is what MARY, our Mother is to us. So was she with Jesus and the apostles. She makes us feel her Son’s love and her care for us. Today we pray for all mothers and all who nurture us to be loving guides in our life, male included, who are always present like Mary even in the midst of hardships! Gracias dearest Mother Mary. We offer our lives to you. Lead us to Jesus your Son! Feliz Compleaños!

Zambo’s security remains tight

Troops patrol a village in Zamboanga City. (TFZ)

NOTICE Police guard a checkpoint in Zamboanga City. Security forces kill at least 5 Abu Sayyaf gunmen in R.T. Lim town in the neighboring province of Zamboanga Sibugay on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, following sporadic battle since Sunday in Alicia town. (Zamboanga Post) Continued from page 1 capital town of Jolo late last month. She said roadblocks and checkpoints around the city are being guarded by soldiers and policemen and patrols continue even at night. She reminded Zamboangueños to stay vigilant and for soldiers and policemen to maintain their alertness following fresh clashes between security forces and Abu Sayyaf terrorists in the neighboring province of Zamboanga Sibugay. “Necesita esta todo alerto y vigilante por nuestra propia seguridad,” Climaco said. At least 5 Abu Sayyaf gunmen were killed and two soldiers wounded in fierce clashes last week in Barangay President Roxas in the town of R.T. Lim where security forces caught up with a group of gunmen escaping a military operation from the nearby town of Alicia where a gunman had been killed and 2 soldiers and

three civilians wounded in Barangay La Paz. The latest fighting coincided with the commemoration of rebel attacks in Zamboanga City by the followers of Moro National Liberation Front chieftain Nur Misuari in 2013. The siege lasted for three weeks and left hundreds of people dead and wounded. It was the second attack of Misuari’s group in Zamboanga City since 2001. Lt. Col. Don Templonuevo, commander of the 44th Infantry Battalion, said they killed 5 gunmen in the fighting, but two more soldiers were also wounded in the clashes. “This is the result of our pursuit operations against the armed elements of Abral Abdusalam and Sahibad Group led by Furuji Indama after our encounter in Barangay La Paz in Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay dawn of Sunday, September 6,” he said. Templonuevo said troops recovered the bodies of the gunmen and

their automatic weapons. The identities of the dead remain unknown, he said, adding, soldiers clashed with at least 10 armed men in the area. “Pursuit operation is still on-going,” he said. Citing intelligence report, Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas, commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade, said the Basilan-based Abu Sayyaf gunmen were on a kidnapping mission. Last October 4, gunmen led by a rogue leader Abdul Alip, of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, kidnapped a 70-year old British man, Allan Arthur Hyrons, and his Filipina wife, Welma Paglinawan, in Tukuran town in Zamboanga del Sur. Alip handed over the couple to the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu province where the pro-ISIS group demanded P50 million for the safe release of the victims. The victims were allegedly rescued by soldiers November 25 after a clash with the Abu Sayyaf. (Zamboanga Post)

Zamboanga launches Covid-19 Data Center

T

HE LOCAL government of Zamboanga has come up with an impressive Covid-19 Data Center showing real-time updates for confirmed coronavirus cases, testing numbers, case mapping in barangays, and other relevant information. Mayor Beng Climaco, Zamboanga City Covid-19 er that will synchronize and head of the local Task Force Data Center is a one-stop centralize Covid-19 manageagainst Covid-19, said the repository and online track- ment data.
