Anti-Duterte propaganda?

People who recover from Covid nearing 1,000 in Zambo Continued from page 1 against Covid-19 headed by Mayor Beng Climaco continues to control the spread of the respiratory virus in an effort to flatten to pandemic curve. She said most of the infection now is transmitted locally with at least 400 recorded cases. Although the steady increase in the number of recovered cases the past months is a welcome reprieve from Covid-19 infections, Climaco again reminded residents to strictly observe health and quarantine protocols. “Wash hands with soap and water, or sani-

tize them and avoid holding your eyes, mouth and ears. Please follow our quarantine guidelines,” she said, but despite Climaco’s repeated pleas and public advisories, many locals continue to ignore the warnings. Police and soldiers have also been tapped by the task force to help impose discipline and for residents to always wear face mask and face shield and practise physical distancing in public places. Authorities have issued citation tickets by the hundreds every day and imposed fines and penalties for quarantine violators. And public calls

for heftier fines and heavy penalties for quarantine violators are mounting. Climaco said while the number of active Covid-19 cases is slowly climbing the chart, she said they also recorded several dozen mortalities, and most of those who perished had underlying medical conditions. The Department of Health said the country has over 57,000 active Covid-19 cases and more than 4,600 deaths. It said the total number of patients who recovered from the disease is over 207,000 from a total of 269,000 cases. (Zamboanga Post)

Truck ban now in effect!

Trucks squeeze thru traffic in this photo taken prior to the Executive Order 589 signed by Mayor Beng Climaco re-implementing the truck ban in Zamboanga City from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. (Zamboanga Post) ZAMBOANGA CITY has re-imposed a truck ban five days a week in an effort to ease the flow of traffic, especially during rush hours, as the public continues to adapt to the restrictions and routine of the new normal. Mayor Beng Climaco issued Executive Order 589 re-implementing the prohibition on cargo trucks of more than 5 gross weight tonnage, including trailers and container vans, on certain streets in Zamboanga from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Section 1 of EO 589 prohibits truck or transportation and/or cargo trucks of more than 5 gross or 5,000 kilograms to include trailers, container vans from plying through Governor Camins Avenue, Veterans Avenue, Governor Ramos Avenue, MCLL Highway

from intersection of Governor Camins to Veterans Avenue, Don Alfaro Street in Barangay Tetuan. While Section 2 of the same order provides a total truck ban at all times for 10-wheeler trucks and up and six-wheeler trucks with an over-all length of 20 feet and beyond on Governor Alvarez Alejo Street, Mayor Vitaliano Agan Avenue, Zamboanga City-Labuan Road and Baliwasan Grande. Climaco said exempted from the ban are fire trucks and liquefied petroleum gas carriers, as well as trucks carrying flammable gas and acetylene gas, and medical and industrial grade oxygen; Zamboanga City Water District tankers, refrigerated vans, and trucks carrying perishable goods, agricultural cargoes and those trans-

porting factory workers. She said the order took effect on September 16 after the City Council passed Resolution No. 1211 on September 1 supporting EO 589. (Zamboanga Post)

Take extra precautions, more typhoons expected: Beng Continued from page 1 more storms are expected until end of the year,” Climaco said. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA said more tropical cyclones enter the socalled “Philippine Area of Responsibility” or PAR than anywhere else in the world. 20 cyclones entering PAR every year, it said about 8 or 9 cross the country and that the peak of the typhoon season is July through October, when nearly 70% of all typhoons develop. Last week, typhoon Noul (Leon) hit the country and flooded many areas, including Zamboanga City where it destroyed croplands and rice fields. It also displaced many families, especially in Barangay Talisayan and Ayala. Climaco rushed to the areas affected by flooding and distributed relief goods to villagers who evacuated at the Talisayan Elementary School. She was accompanied by Councilors

Pinpin Pareja and El King Omaga, and Talisayan Barangay chairperson Juanita Escobal and social workers. She said the City Agriculturist Office reported at least 75 hectares of rice fields in Culianan District were damaged due to flash floods and strong winds. “Estimated value to the damage (rice fields) is P2.8 million. The (heavy) rains, accompanied by strong winds, also flooded streets, damaged several houses on stilts and knocked down trees causing power outage in various parts of the city,” Climaco said. The mayor ordered the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office to always be on alert

and to quickly respond to emergencies, and for barangay officials to monitor the situation in their respective areas and to take appropriate actions if the situation calls for it. Climaco said PAGASA also warned of La Niña which can bring more rains in comings months. Citing a report by PAGASA, she said the country may experience higher chance of strong convective activity and tropical cyclone occurrence which may bring above normal rainfall. “Potential adverse impacts also include floods and landslide over vulnerable areas with varying magnitude,” she said, quoting the weather bureau. Anti-Duterte propaganda?

“So I hope that everybody would listen to reason. (Zamboanga Post)

Climaco also warned smugglers to stop their nefarious activities be-

It’s either we get you or you stop your illegal activities for good,” she said. The Bureau of Customs in Zamboanga under District Collector Segundo Sigmundfreud Barte Jr.

tion of the contraband, is a firm directive from Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero. “This serves as a warning to smugglers that we are committed in performing our mandate to protect the borders from illicit trade and customs fraud,” he said. Barte also commended the Philippine Coast

Philippines to revive ‘North Borneo Bureau’ THE PHILIPPINES said it would revive the “North Borneo Bureau” to exert its claim to the mineral-rich Sabah even if Malaysia insisted it is theirs. This was confirmed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. who told lawmakers that he has decided to revive the North Borneo Bureau to uphold the country’s claim to Sabah. A report by ABS-CBN also quoted Locsin as telling members of the House Appropriations Committee that: “While we fiercely guard our waters, we are not forgetting our terrestrial domain. In pursuit of securing what is ours, I have decided to reactivate the North Borneo Bureau.” “After realizing that the rest of us have almost forgotten our Sabah claim, casually designating it as another country’s territory, well we have not forgotten. This is one of several international disagreements we can afford to conduct in our best interest without any risk of loss of any kind for our country,” he said, adding, “Our honor is involved here.” Locsin said there are also plans to revive both the Brunei Daruss a l a m - In d o n e s i a - Ma laysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and the Sabah claim. “BIMP-EAGA, dormant for a while but it was

agreed to revive it. Pretty much like even some of our special concerns like Sabah. That was, on our part, put on back burner which I never agreed with. But over the years, from one admin after another, starting with Cory Aquino, it was put in the back burner, but something happened this year. And if I may talk about this, when the press release was put out by the US embassy and they very casually referred to Sabah, Malaysia, and that was it. I blew my top,” Locsin shared, recalling an incident that happened in late July. “I told (the US) embassy (to) take it down. Of course, they didn’t want to do it. So I accused them... And (US Secretary of State) Mike Pompeo said, ‘Leave it to me. I will make sure to bring it down’.” “Because that thing has been happening to us, that claim has always been there and we should have never allowed it to be dormant. But ... we have no control over that. But now, we are going to revive that bureau and make sure no one is allowed to question that claim without a challenge from us. That is part of Philippine history, especially of Philippine south,” the report further quoted Locsin as saying. The Sultanate of Sulu, founded in 1457, continues to lay claim to Sabah which it obtained from

Brunei as a gift for helping put down a rebellion on Borneo Island. The British leased Sabah and transferred control over the territory to Malaysia after the end of World War II. The Sulu Sultanate said it had merely leased North Borneo in 1878 to the British North Borneo Company for an annual payment of 5,000 Malayan dollars then, which was increased to 5,300 Malayan dollars in 1903. The Sultanate of Sulu is believed to exist as a sovereign nation for at least 442 years. It stretches from a part of the island of Mindanao in the east, to Sabah, in the west and south, and to Palawan, in the north. But North Borneo was annexed by Malaysia in 1963 following a referendum organised by the Cobbold Commission in 1962, the people of Sabah voted overwhelmingly to join Malaysia. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein repeatedly said his country will not recognise any foreign claim for Sabah, adding, it belongs to Malaysia and will always be part of the Federation. “We will not recognise, what more, meet any foreign claim for Sabah. At the same time, I want to categorically state here that Sabah is, and will always be, part of Malaysia,” Hussein said. (Zamboanga Post)

May Body Odor, Paano Maaalis?

HEALTH

Ni Dr. Willie T. Ong

M

Puwede ang tawas, roll-on, baking soda,

at iba pa. 6.

Grandparents Sunday! SIRACH 28:7 - God overlooks offense. Matthew 18:35 - Jesus added, “So will my Heavenly Father do with you, unless you sincerely forgive your brothers and sisters.” Msgr. (Crisologo) Manongas spoke of God’s UNLI- MERCY! Unlimited forgiveness by God should move us from our pain by letting go of our grudges and only by God’s grace, be ready to forgive those who have caused us so much hurt. It’s God’s way - He was innocently accused and tortured, crucified and died, all for the love of us. I bear the pain of collective hurts and ask: cosa ba yo ya culpa kanila? When I look at Jesus, I realize that He who was innocent suffered greatly from injustice, I too must follow him. To forgive beyond grudges and hurt, and to forgive and love desde corazon! This is a journey of healing that God

provides if we are open to let go of all the burden. (Just a while ago,) we got a very important greeting from our Apos, Tania and Tonito, a HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY! The little ones bring unexpected joy in our hearts! Today, the Garcia family honors our Tito Julianing, who turns, with God’s grace, 99 years old. With our Tito Ben, Tito Julianing, who is a doctor, came to Zamboanga and followed by my Mom, who was an optometrist. They built their families here and learned Chavacano. In this new normal, we have great limitations and stayed at home for our Zoom party. We offered a thanksgiving mass at St. Joseph Church where they used to attend services during preCovid with our dear Tita Nene who introduced me to the Novena to St. Joseph for a good husband. (Keep praying for those searching because God makes way) By noon, the family gathered in different time

zones, the rest almost midnight. We said a prayer and in our own party hats and cakes, we sang Happy Birthday. The grand children and great grandchildren greeted their Lolo. Simply a blessed event to see our Tita and Tito both in their 90s partaking of the birthday meals with loved ones gathered virtually. All are blessings with friends also sharing a video message. We still seek Dr. Garcia’s advices and he still provides medicines to cure us with God’s grace. Happy 99th Birthday dear Tito! He is a father to us. His other sibling is my Ninang who took care of us in New Jersey. Thanks to Arlene and Peter who set up the zoom session. May families adjust to a new normal of safe celebrations which bring us together despite of the distance! Gracias a Dios y abrazos de La Virgen Maria y San Jose! Bendiciones a todos Abuelos y Abuelas! Lolos and Lolas!
