A Message from your President

LQ Key club donated 70$ toward fighting Cancer at Relay for Life!

Greetings Aztecs! What a fantastic summer it’s been. Can you believe we start school in a month? Although we haven’t been able to see eachother as often, we still managed to participate in multiple service projects with our community and division such as Concerts in the Park, Relay For Life, and Beach Clean Ups. We also fundraised

181.61$ for PTP! And 70$ toward Relay for Life! Division also fundraised for PTP; we participated in “Splash Attack” with our LTG, having fun and donating at the same time. But get ready for August because we’re going to have a multiple events and fundraisers such as Movies in the Park, BBQ Bonanza, Beach Clean Ups, Beach Boomba, Divisional Bonfire, and more bake sales. Wow.

So tell me Aztecs, how do you feel?! Your President, Mindy Vo

A Message from your Secretary Hello, fellow aztec otters! I am proud to announce that we've accomplished a full 1500 hours since April! WOW! By going to events such as the Concerts in the Park at Mile Square and the Realy For Life at Fountian Valley High, You guys have truly stepped up your game from 1000 hrs from last year's term. However, why stop there? We still have half of the summer and the whole school year ahead of us. Be prepared for the upcoming Beach Boomba where you'll meet many new people from other divisons! Make sure to continue showing off that Aztec Spirit! Your fellow secretary, Christian Do

Past events BEACH CLEAN UP Article by Tanya Ngo On June 28th, our club attended a Surf Rider’s beach clean-up on 17th street. Despite the event taking place bright and early on a summer day, a surprising amount of members came out to help. Collectively hauling our purple latex gloves and eco-friendly trash bags, we strolled onto the shores of Huntington Beach to start the project. It soon turned into a friendly competition, diving after Darold Trinh and Alex pham bottle caps and candy wrappers. race to claim the most trash— Even though it wasn’t an enormous Darold had 5 lbs of trash! Nice group of members that attended the job Darold. event, we were able to collect at least eight pounds of trash all together. Truthfully, five of those pounds came from one member, but that just goes to show how spirited Key clubbers can be, even at 9 AM during summer. I personally enjoyed this event because of how well we worked together for a small group of members. Not wanting to be there for the whole four hours, we labored away; making sure the beach was spotless as fast as possible. US Open was probably a huge motivating factor, but it doesn’t matter because we got the job done.

Keon Chung picks up cans, bottle caps, cigarette butts, and bird poop……. Kelly Nguyen, Petery Ly, Mindy Vo, and Christian Do screen the sand for some trash with bags Surfrider provided.

JULY 5TH/ 19TH Article by Jacqueline Letu

As weeks of service roll by, La Quinta High School Key Clubbers began the month of July with Concerts in the Park. This service project was held at the Fountain Valley Recreational Center in Mile Square Park. Hundreds of families gathered in front of the stage to enjoy live music and delicious food provided by the Kiwanis tent. These volunteers were in charge of playing games with kids and handing out free stress balls. Once again, these otters put smiles to the faces of happy children and adults.

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

Everyone stayed overnight/late to attend the Relay for Life Ceremony -> and to walk around the track. Many kept track of their laps through keeping beads around a bracelet.

“Everyone generously donated a total of 70$ toward finding a cure to cancer! ”

On July 14th, 2012 I attended my very first Relay for Life. When I first heard about Relay for Life I did not know what to expect. At first, I thought that we were just going to volunteer, help, and support those who were fighting against cancer. However, it was so much more than that. For some, this event was a comfort zone for them to remember their loved ones. For others, it was an eye-catching event because it’s not every day you see a community so united to accomplish the same goal. At Relay for Life I learned many new things, but what really caught my attention were the purple and white themed banners that had the three words: Celebrate. Remember. Fight back. Each of these words meant something which was that you celebrate those who are still living, remember your loved ones, and help the community fight back against cancer. This was a memorable event for me because I met a lot of new people from other schools that weren’t in Division 4 North and I got to experience what it was like to relay for people’s lives.

“Walking for Relay For Life made me realize that no matter what how difficult things get, whether we have lost a family member or watched another struggle, there will always be hope. There will always be people who will care. And that’s why we do what we do. We were walking for a cure, for a change.”

- Mindy Vo

Luminary Bags Members walked around the track at Fountain Valley, where it is lined with hundreds of glowing luminary bags. As the sun set, the simple parchment bags turned into glowing orbs of hope, lighting the way toward finding a cure, one step at a time.

For their July DCM, Division 4 North gathered at Garden Grove Park and held a fundraiser for Pediatric Trauma Prevention. These otters donated three dollars and participated in a water balloon fight. With a donation of one dollar, members had an opportunity to pie the divisional board. Afterwards, the water balloon fight began and these otters started getting soaking wet. One by one, over five hundred water balloons flew in the air. Within several minutes, all that was left were scraps of balloons and drops of whipped cream scattered across the ground. Division 4 North ended the social by cleaning up and saying goodbyes to their fellow otters!

Bake Sale Sunday, July 22: Jennifer, Christine, Kelly, Darold, Alex, Vincent, Christian, Duy, Jacqueline, Mindy, and Travis arrived bright and early in front of Albertsons, setting up tables, chairs, and trays of goodies. Even our LTG, Helen, joined us that afternoon! Jennifer lured customers over with her signature Key Club spirit and irresistible cute-ness. We are proud to announce that after a grueling afternoon with hot sun and no shade, we managed to produce 181.61$ for Pediatric Trauma Program.

Mr. Piggy was nice and full that Sunday, collecting more than 181 $ in his pink belly. He sat out in the sun for more than 7 hours and got a nice pink tan!

Congratulations Danny Nguyen for being July’s Member of the month! Danny is an upcoming senior, and he is always committed toward showing up for events and fundraisers and also exhibits Key Club character by lending a hand to his fellow members when needing rides or picking up trash. He’s always fun to be around with and keeps the atmosphere light and feelin’ good. “He seems really dedicated, friendly, and he attends most of the service projects we have.” -Christina Tran (Spirit Chair/ Teach. Assist.) “He always goes to events and even though he's kind of quiet it seems like he's always the one stepping up to provide rides.” -Tanya Ngo (Historian)
