create stainless steel yacht, dinghy and multihull sculptures. My first ever commission was to create trophies for the
British Sailing Team winners for the Beijing Olympics. It was
a little nerve racking and a bit like starting at the deep end!
My work now sells both in galleries and as trophies for
yachting events. I have been lucky enough to have some very exciting projects including creating the Extreme 40 sailing series World Trophy and a trophy for the Americas Cup.
How would you describe your sculptures?
My sculptures are very sleek, minimalist and always very shiny. I like to capture the essence of the yacht I am trying to create.
Where do you get your inspiration and ideas? I tend to study the boats that I am making and do a lot of research. I take my ideas from watching the boats sailing.
What's the largest sculpture you've made?
The largest sculpture I have made so far was a five foot
high AC72- these are the boats that are currently being
sailed by the America's Cup. It was commissioned by an America's Cup sailor for a museum in San Diego.
Can people commission you or where can they buy your work?
The music festival in September is always great fun and member of Looe Sailing Club it is always great to get out on the water and see the visiting boats. The Lugger festival is also a great event, and I often like to
photograph the visiting Luggers, as it gives me material to work with for future projects.
What’s the best thing about Cornwall?
Living in a great location five minutes from the sea.
Where do you like to go on a day off?
On a rare day off I like to hit the water and visit Fowey. It’s only a little way down the coast by boat and there is a wonderful restaurant there called SAMs which is always worth a visit.
Favourite visitor attraction in Cornwall? In my house we always like to visit the Eden Project
because it’s a great day out whatever the weather! The
tropical biome is the closest we can currently get to our favourite holiday destination, Malaysia.
If you had one wish for Looe, what would it be? A marina.
Find out more:
You can see further images of my work on my website: www.richardvasey.co.uk
People can commission a sculpture by contacting me at my website. I also sell my work through: The Crabb Pot, Looe, The Red Rag Gallery Bath, and in Harrods.
My work will also be on display for the next month
alongside the artist Martin Bush in the Royal William Yard, Plymouth.
Favourite time of year in Looe?
My favourite time of the year is summer when the tide is in as it means I can go sailing!

so undeclared landings of alcohol and tobacco, mainly from the Channel Islands, were rife. When visiting, be sure to check out the Polperro Heritage Museum of Fishing and Smuggling, which will take you on a tour of Polperro's maritime and smuggling history. Today, the smugglers have gone (well most of them), but Polperro is as busy as ever with a thriving tourist trade and small day boat fishing fleet.
ilovelooe & south east cornwall
21st century Polperro
With the fishing industry at an end tourism saved the day, turning the chocolate box, picture perfect fishing harbour into one of the most popular destinations in Cornwall. Over the decades Polperro's narrow winding streets saw an increase in vehicle traffic bringing about the pedestrianization of the village with visitors now leaving their cars at Crumplehorn, half a mile from the harbour. Don't worry, there are trams and horse carts if you don't fancy the walk. The village itself is home to pretty whitewashed cottages, winding lanes, restaurants and pubs, craft and gift shops. Local guided walks give a great insight into the history of the village. Look out for the old Watch House, the aptly named Shell House in The Warren, the House on Props and the Saxon and Roman bridges.
24
ilovelooe & south east cornwall
For the more adventurous there are shoreline and wildlife spotting boat trips, fishing trips and many stunning coastal and countryside walks.
Polperro Festival
For the last 18 years Polperro has celebrated the local community and its cultures with an amazing festival of food, drink, music, dance and art. 2013 will be no exception with nine days of fun and entertainment from the 15th to the 23rd June. On show will be arts and crafts from local artists, locally produced fayre, resident musicians and singers, Morris dancing and some general silliness! For more details about the festival, visit: http://www.polperrofestivalsandlights.co.uk
Visiting Polperro
With the traffic free streets, it's easy to wander the lanes where once fish was hauled in barrows and contraband, some destined for London, was hidden under the cover of darkness. The fishermen's cottages are testament to hard working families who made the village what it is today. Polperro has been labelled the prettiest, traditional village in Cornwall, which is well deserved. With good links from Looe and the south west, it’s an all year round destination.
Parking
All year and plenty of it in the car park at the top of the village.
How to get here
Getting to Polperro from Looe is easy and you have no less than four options! 1. Car - 10 minute drive along the A387 from Looe. 2. Bus - Pick up opposite the doctor’s surgery by Looe bridge. 3. Walk - Depending on fitness, 2-4hrs along the coastal path. 4. Boat - Boat trips in summer from Looe depending on tides.

For those with horticultural problems, the BBC Cornwall Gardenline Team will be present to give tips and advice. For all gardeners, this is one event not to miss.

Since then, this colourful and well supported event has grown into an
important part of the Looe calendar. Locals and visitors flock to see the procession, Maypole dancing and entertainment. For 2013, the West Looe May

All festival goers are invited to sample Cornish teas, coffee, wines, jams, chutneys, seafood and much more. There will be demonstrations by leading chefs, hot and cold food to feast on and recipes to try at home. All this and more in a larger marquee than last year, making visiting easier, especially for wheelchair users. Try the lobster from Nippers Shellfish in Looe. Trust me, it’s amazing.

Customer Reviews Love it
HHHHH
I am enjoying this app enormously. It is a great place to visit for locals and visitors alike. Whether you are looking for a place to stay, choose from all the fab local restaurants, share local knowledge or promote local business. There are some superb photos showcasing all the events and hotspots of Looe.
Amazing app for Looe
HHHHH
This app is amazing if you live in Looe or if you’re traveling through. It can keep you up to date with the latest info. Most business in Looe are on it with all there contact details!
Impressive app
HHHHH
A common problem with most apps & local sites like this is that they only cover businesses that sponsor them. This Looe app doesn’t rely on that, and really is comprehensive - from my limited knowledge of Looe, all the pubs & shops are included! Really useful guide, recommended.

HHHHH
We travel to our 2nd home in Looe 5 or 6 times a year & although I know the area pretty well, this app is up to date with restaurants, shops, what’s on and tide time tables. Great app to have on the move when out and about. Can thoroughly recommend it.
