EDITOR’S LETTER

Here we go again…

PH OTO B Y R AC HE L PA L M E R

Bond girl Astrid (p45)

…it’s the holiday season! Whatever that means to you, one thing’s for sure: you will be celebrating. Whether that’s high jinx and getting up to no good (hope so!), or simply toasting a chance to bolt the doors and do absolutely nothing (that’ll be me), it really is a magical time of year. The unavoidable commercial message of ‘spend, spend, spend’ sends many of us into a frenzy. But as someone who likes to delve deeper into the spirituality of it all, I think there’s nothing wrong with looking at gifting as something quite meaningful. Sometimes we need (and like) a reason to give, as much as we do a reason to celebrate. Gifting feels good, be it to loved ones or to a certain someone, for an act of random kindness. Love makes the world go round, and this is really just another step that keeps the circle going. So, ‘Gift away!’ I say – and keep encouraging that love with thanks. Need a few pointers? This issue has a dedicated gift guide, brought to you by those in the know (p126). On the subject of love, something’s definitely in the air – eighty per cent of brides get engaged over the festive period. Wow – that’s a lot of happy ladies! So we thought we’d give them a shout-out and gift them with our super luxe insider knowledge. Arabella Dupont delivers key trends from across the pond (p98) while Robyn Hamilton shines a light on the best of British bridal fashion (p104). Elle Blakeman, who knows every luxury London haunt, points us to the most fabulous party venues (p114) and the brilliant Charlotte Sinclair suggests honeymoon hotspots when it’s time to relax (p122). Above all, be kind to yourself. Don’t be shy about indulging and rewarding the person who keeps the wheels turning – you. After all, you’ve a whole new year to get through in 2018! What a thought. But I’m confident there’ll be something to lift you among our fashion, beauty, travel, food and interior pages. ASTRID JOSS,

EDITOR

TH E PER FU M ED GAR D EN Botany and the arts unite in stunning British newcomer Parterre, which creates perfumes from seed to bottle. All ingredients are direct from Keyneston Mill, the Dorset botanical garden of the passionate and artistic Julia and David Bridger – cocreators with Grasse master perfumer Jacques Chabert (who conjured Chanel’s Cristalle and Guerlain’s Samsara). The fifty-acre estate boasts over 2,000 plant varieties. ‘Our mission is to grow the most unusual plants we can source,’ they say. A trio of truly beautiful classic scents with a definite twist form the first range: Tribute to Edith (flora), Run of the River (citrus) and Root of All Goodness (leather). As for what that twist is… spritz to find out! parterrefragrances.com

akeup can completely change a face, at the stroke of a brush. Just as we have Monets and Da Vincis to thank for beautiful works of art, to be admired and adored, there are among us highly acclaimed makeup artists – geniuses who transform faces in the name of both beauty, fashion and art. Yasmin Heinz is one of them and her new book, Elements – The Art of Make-up (published by Prestel), is a celebration of her work. With 180 illustrations, weaving together the best of fashion, beauty and photography, it showcases makeup at the front line of art. Having worked at the cutting edge, from photoshoots and runway shows to music videos and advertising, Yasmin’s client list is second to none, including Vogue, Vanity Fair, Dior, Chanel and McQueen. She’s collaborated with photographers Ellen von Unwerth and Annie Leibovitz, and models including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, David Gandy and Diane Kruger – to name but a few. ‘Makeup isn’t revolutionary,’ Yasmin says, ‘but I hope my images will make somebody’s day, inspire them and lift them up.’ As Conde Nast Asia beauty director Kathy Phillips remarks, each time Yasmin picks up brush, sponge, tint, powder or cream, she paints a new perception of beauty. And this truly is beauty as art. elements-by-yasmin-heinz.com

“IF I TOLD MY PARENTS NOW THAT I WANTED TO BECOME A DOCTOR, THEY WOULD BE HAPPY”

n a beautiful, sunny, autumn day in north London, the MINE crew await the entrance of the much talked-about Renee Stewart. Once, that talk would have centered on her rock ’n’ roll and modeling pedigree: she’s the daughter of Rod Stewart and Rachel Hunter. Now, however, she is known, quite simply, for being Renee. Having graduated from the London Contemporary Dance School in 2016, she has projects galore afoot. ‘When I was growing up,’ recalls the twenty-five-year-old, ‘I tried lots of things, from riding to painting – and even football! Dad wanted us all to play at some point (there are eight siblings in total). He was hoping one of us would make it to a professional league! He’s football-obsessed. ‘Yet I soon knew that I wanted to be a dancer. I love the artistic side of dancing as well as the athletic side. I even love the discipline and the structure: I’m definitely a person who loves to have a meaning and a purpose – something to get up for and throw yourself into every day.’ However, she admits the industry is tough. ‘Dance is beautiful yet unforgiving – like anything that requires practice and discipline. If you have an off day, you have to get up, go back and do it again the next day. You’re also dealing with body as well as mind. Both are demanding in equal measure. ‘I love days like today (the MINE shoot). The collaborative side of coming together with so many different, creative-minded people is where I thrive.’ Having danced since she was seven, Renee can’t imagine life without it. But she has other interests too: ‘I love taking photographs – I have done since I was nine. I own two cameras: one digital and one film. Shooting on film is exciting because you have the anticipation of waiting for it to be developed.’ As we move through the day, there’s not a single crew member who isn’t touched by Renee’s charm and ease, not to mention her infectious smile: a big, Julia Roberts-esque beam that brings the room to life. Does she mind the comparison to Roberts? ‘Oh, not at all. It’s a compliment, for sure.’ When MINE shoots Renee wearing Dior’s new autumn/winter

biker boots, we ask her to tap to the background music’s beat. She happily complies, pausing only to grant the photographer’s request to strike a pose for a close-up beauty shot. Then she yelps – ‘Oh! I didn’t realize you were still filming me! Wait – I need to get my rhythm back!’ Did her background propel her in the direction she has taken? ‘Growing up in an artistic family was chaotic: constant music playing throughout my mum’s house and my dad’s. Mum’s was more hip-hopbased; Dad would have Sam Cooke or Motown playing. ‘But we made our own decisions and were encouraged in anything we pursued. If I told my parents now that I wanted to change my career and become a doctor or an accountant, they would be happy and supportive. ‘As an artist/creative, you’re forever learning and developing your craft; constantly working harder and harder. Nothing is ever enough! Which is why I love doing what I do. With dance, there’s constant growth and discovery.’ Since graduating with a first-class degree in contemporary dance, Renee has worked with international choreographer Sasha Roubicek on a project funded by the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama. In May, they took their piece to Hong Kong for the International Choreography Festival, where it earned great acclaim. Renee’s interest in film has also drawn her into work on three forthcoming dance videos. Her passion for the art of dance is crystal-clear, as is her desire to bring it to the forefront of complementary media like film, photography and fashion. ‘Collaboration is a way for your work to be seen on different platforms and by different audiences,’ she declares. ‘My friend Jacob Jonas holds a monthly Instameet (a community on Instagram) called CamerasandDancers, which brings dance and photography together to create content.’ Talking of Instagram, Renee’s is one to watch, as her 11,000-strong (and growing) following attests. ‘Social media plays such an important role in society, especially for creatives – it’s how our work is seen,’ she explains. ‘I see Instagram as a beautiful magazine of our lives. As a dancer, I try to create authentic and interesting content rather than selfie after selfie… Nothing against selfies though!’

Diamonds are forever – and so is an Aston Martin (well, almost). Licensed-to-thrill MINE editor Astrid Joss takes the DB11 for a spin

ou only live once – albeit twice or maybe forever in 007’s world. And despite never being a Bond film fan, I’m inspired by his fast and fierce appetite for life. So when a day driving Aston Martin’s most recent creation was mooted, I thought I really should. Its predecessor, the DB10, was a bespoke model for 2015’s Spectre. The DB11 reimagines the relationship between form and function, but – like anything shiny and expensive – requires a special factor to make you fall for it hook, line and sinker. So when Aston Martin CEO Dr Andy Palmer said, ‘This is not only the most important car in Aston Martin’s history, but also in its 103 years’ existence,’ now seemed the right time to be converted to a luxury car appreciator. I set off from Berkshire’s Cliveden House after a briefing by chief creative officer Marek Reichman, who conjures up each new Aston Martin. At the mercy of the vehicle, I felt intimidated by its power and value. Yet as the journey unfolded, a curious thing happened: we became acquainted with each other. I got to know how the car works, and all its clever details; from being able to move the steering wheel to an ideal angle unobtainable in most cars; through

the high-tech sound system and sat nav; to the way it makes you feel a million dollars, courtesy of stunning styling (think hand-stitching, a hand-painted finish and Bridge of Weir leather, untainted by midge bites owing to it coming from long-haired cows). Empowered by confidence, I relished gliding along country lanes and racing down motorways. The Aston Martin and I were friends, inspiring feelings I’ve never had for a car. It was like a fusion of a treasured piece of jewellery with a beloved canine. The DB11, Reichman explained, is living art with fantastic DNA: ‘I’m embodying all of its British history, style and prowess in a shape that has soul. When you lay eyes on the car, I want the same reaction you may have if Usain Bolt entered a room: bowled over by the beauty of sculpture and power.’ Reichman and his team have gone above and beyond to deliver perfection. No surprise, then, that Aston Martin has six hundred customers waiting for one hundred and fifty cars. It has produced 80,000 vehicles in a century, whereas Toyota et al churn out ten million each year. In 2017, Sotheby’s sold a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 for $22,550,000, making it the most expensive British car ever. You do the math.

dventures around the world have inspired British designer Katharine Pooley. Now her work is commemorated by a beautiful new book, in collaboration with Assouline.

How did you begin in interiors? Living in Singapore, I designed several homes. People kept asking me to do theirs. On my return to London, I opened a boutique on Walton Street, with luxury products from around the world, then a design studio.

Do international projects excite you more? I enjoy working on every project because I become immersed in,

homes. Some clients have antique collections, which we use to dress a space. But I also believe in ‘less is more’ when it comes to dressing. It’s important to keep a curious mind and a keen eye – inspiration can be found in unexpected locations. When I was in Russia, a detail on the ceiling of the Summer Palace of Peter the Great caught my eye and was later woven into a cornice design. I’m always on the lookout for inspiration in nature, architecture, art, jewellery, fashion and interiors.

Where would you like to work? A dream of mine has always been to create a beautiful safari lodge in Africa. I’ve enjoyed many safaris and the landscape is unsurpassable. I’d use a palette of natural tones, fabrics and textures in a luxurious, timeless combination. De Le Cuona fabrics have an amazing, Africaninfluenced range with beautiful textures, which would work perfectly. I’d also love the opportunity to design a yacht or another private jet.

How do you feel interiors will evolve? That’s difficult to predict. It definitely goes in circles: certain schemes become fashionable again. Who would you like to design your own property? Nina Campbell.

How do residential projects compare to commercial ones? We’ve worked on residential projects where the building is listed, so you’re sometimes limited as to what you can change structurally. But my team and I love the challenge. We completed a castle in Scotland where the staircase was so small that we couldn’t get any furniture in. We had to saw everything in half and glue it back together! There’s always a solution to every problem. From a commercial/hotel perspective, people like to see interior design that has a lived-in feel. But there are far greater regulations – for example, the projects have to be fire-rated.

What was the inspiration for your book with Assouline? Travel is the thread running through the book, which explores the creative process and inspirations behind nineteen of our projects; from a magnificent Middle Eastern villa in Dubai to a historic castle in the Scottish Highlands. No two projects are the same; I take inspiration from a client’s style and personality, as well as each property’s location. What’s in the pipeline for you? Projects across the globe, including a family home in Washington.

Do you follow trends? My starting point is always to listen to the clients and work with them. I travel with them and absorb their tastes. Ultimately, we’re creating

FOOD ROASTED FENNEL, LENTIL AND FIG SALAD

‘These are some of my favourite flavour combinations. The liquorice taste of the fennel, the aromatic dill, the fresh lemon, the sweet figs and the delicate crunch of their seeds create a wonderful, well-rounded salad. The lentils add real substance to keep you feeling fuller longer.’ Serves 2 100g (½ cup) dried green lentils, rinsed 1 large fennel bulb 1 tbsp olive oil pink Himalayan salt or sea salt freshly ground black pepper 3 fresh figs, quartered small handful of fresh dill, chopped For the dressing: ½ lemon 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil ½ tsp ground cumin

1) Preheat the oven to 180°C. 2) Place the lentils in a small pan. Cover with cold water and place over a medium-high heat. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes or until cooked through. Add water if needed. Drain, tip back in the pan and leave to cool. 3) Remove tatty outer leaves from the fennel. Cut into 1cm wedges and place on a roasting tray with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. 4) Roast the wedges in the oven for 30-35 minutes. Turn halfway to ensure all are evenly cooked. Remove and allow to cool. 5) For the dressing, zest the lemon. Set the zest aside. Mix the lemon juice, olive oil and cumin together in a small bowl. 6) Mix the lentils and fennel with the dressing. Serve with the fig pieces. Scatter over the chopped dill and a little lemon zest.

CARROT CAKE PORRIDGE

‘I’m a huge fan of porridge – it’s one of the best breakfasts, providing energy that usually keeps me going until lunch. I like experimenting with different flavours, inspired by traditional British puddings. Because who doesn’t want to eat dessert for breakfast when it’s good for you?’ Serves 2 200g (1 cup) rolled oats 250ml (1 cup) unsweetened almond milk 1 carrot, peeled and grated 1 tbsp date syrup or maple syrup ¼ tsp each of ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg and ground ginger 30g (¼ cup) raisins

1) Put the oats, almond milk and 250ml (1 cup) water in a small saucepan, and place over a medium heat. 2) Stir in most of the carrot, with the syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and raisins. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring regularly, until thick and creamy. 3) Serve sprinkled with the remaining carrot, or your preferred topping (try our favourite: a small handful of chopped, unsalted, raw walnuts).

The décor and dishes of Jean-Georges at The Connaught

THE BEST FROM

Born in Alsace, inspired in Asia and a smash in New York and Tokyo, Jean-Georges Vongerichten helms a new restaurant at London’s Connaught hotel. Robert James reports

J

ean-Georges at The Connaught is open all day, but dinner offers an opportunity to enjoy a meal without the thought of rushing to meetings or being bombarded by WhatsApps and emails. The Connaught – a London icon – sits perfectly in the heart of Mayfair and on the corner of go-to luxury shopping destination Mount Street. Over the years, the hotel has found ways to reinvent its spaces while maintaining a superlative level of service. The new restaurant has been duly designed by interior architect John Heah as a contemporary yet relaxing and informal dining room. As you enter, you’re absorbed both by beautiful smiles and warm welcomes from the team, and by the décor. From low-slung sofas, you can take in stunning, floor to ceiling, stained glass windows, and fantastic views to the outside water feature and beautiful architecture of Mount Street. A cool but warm natural colour palette, and perfectly positioned mood lighting, complete the scene. Jean-Georges is renowned for his signature Southeast Asian flavours, which grace the menu alongside an eclectic mix of British and Connaught classics. The ‘Taste of Jean-Georges’ is an ideal option when you’re so spoiled for choice: tuna tartare (an utter taste sensation), crispy salmon sushi, egg toast and caviar, black truffle and fontina pizza (an absolute must), and Cornish lamb chops. And with a wine list drawn from The Connaught’s six-thousand-bottle cellar, it’s well worth asking the sommelier to recommend something extra-special. From start to finish, the experience is faultless. Now to find time for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea…

FALL INTO WINTER 67

Wine lovers will have heard of Castiglion Del Bosco: a twelfthcentury estate complete with its very own ruined castle, now carefully managed by Rosewood. Within five thousand acres of a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is popular both for its views and its vineyards. Its Zodiac wine has become a collector’s item and its brunello is considered among the world’s best. But it’s not just the wine, fresh olive oil and grappa del drago that attract guests: it’s the hallowed atmosphere of a true jewel of a hotel. The golf course is so immaculate that Obama visited for a well-earned break. The gardens – carefully tended by a charming team – were designed by the landscapers of the Vatican. The kitchen gardens have over 180 varieties of vegetables and herbs, which the chefs use for inspiration when creating menus for the two exceptional restaurants. And the stylish staff are attentive without being overbearing. With just twenty-three spacious suites and eleven luxury villas, conjured from restored seventeenth and eighteenth-century farmhouses, guests can imagine they have the estate to themselves. In the summer, the infinity pool, with views of the hill town Montalcino, is hemmed by a haze of lavender, and timid lizards dart between ancient stones in the steps to the castle. But this winter the hotel is soft-launching a foray into the world of log fires, foggy mornings and crisp days. The villas will be available with daily housekeeping, daytime assistance and, should you decide that making Christmas lunch is a chore too far, chefs on call. castigliondelbosco.com

Abbaye de la B ussière, L a Bussière -sur- Ouche, Côte - d’Or

Keats described autumn as a season of ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’ – and there’s no better place to experience those than a Gothic abbey in the heart of Burgundy. The Abbaye de la Bussière was founded in 1131 and, as it flourished, so too did its monastic necessities: a cellar, dovecote and winepress. In time, possession passed from the monks to the aristocracy and, latterly, to a British couple who transformed it into a luxury hotel, now part of the Relais & Châteaux group. Sympathetic to the buildings’ history and romantic design, the owners have kept the nooks, crannies and jewel-coloured stained glass, making it the perfect place to relish thunderstorms as you sip local red wine. The Michelin-starred 1131 restaurant, in the abbey’s former cloister, invites hushed reverence – but, nowadays, from devotees of exceptional dishes. The perfectly balanced, delicate flavours are pleasingly free of the heaviness of some French menus. Twenty tastefully decorated rooms are spaciously arranged, with views over the seventeen-acre park in which the hotel sits. If you’re keen to explore the area, the abbey is a twenty-minute drive from Dijon, Beaune and the Route des Grands Crus wine trail. Experts gathered in the cosy bar will point you towards less well-known but equally worthy wineries, or you can take a bicycle through the beautiful countryside and build up an appetite for supper. abbayedelabussiere.fr/en

The Lanesborough, London

After a summer of sunny escapes, body-toning outdoor activities, fresh fruit and salads, the party season should showcase all that hard work. So kick it off with a trip to the new spa at The Lanesborough: so spectacular and beautiful that it’s hard to believe anyone would dare sweat in it. And that’s just one reason to stay at The Lanesborough. It’s now an Oetker Collection hotel, which guarantees the highest levels of style, service and substance – and makes the presence of elegant celebrities in search of a London hideaway more likely (Madonna and Leonardo DiCaprio are among former guests). A big pull for the well-heeled is a round-the-clock, dedicated butler service. No matter what time you jet in, every need will be met. The Michelin-starred Celeste restaurant serves the best pastries in London for breakfast, and an irritatingly irresistible (for those watching their waistline) afternoon tea whose highlight is fresh scones with lashings of cream. Lunch and dinner menus are similarly spectacular. Each room is designed to the utmost standards of comfort and taste, and the Library Bar – with live music and seductive furnishings –makes ‘just one more’ cocktail the smart choice. And now there is the Lanesborough Club & Spa – after all, you have to work off those delicious refreshments somehow. So why not do so in exquisite surroundings and round it off with a soothing massage? You deserve it. oetkercollection.com/destinations/the-lanesborough

Beau-Rivage Palace, Lausanne

Admired for its beauty, Lake Geneva has also inspired the creatively inclined. Mary and Percy Shelley competed with Byron to write ghost stories there (Mary won with Frankenstein), David Bowie resumed painting when he moved there and Freddie Mercury recorded his last songs on its shores. The beautiful expanse of water – surrounded by frayed mountains, haunting castles and picturesque villages – is an attraction in its own right. Take a paddle steamer and a good book and spend the day enjoying the views and fresh air. When you disembark, recharged and with rosy cheeks, check into the BeauRivage Palace, which opened in 1861 and has hosted Victor Hugo, Charlie Chaplin, Coco Chanel and Tina Turner. Set within beautiful gardens on the shores of the lake, it exudes the quiet confidence of a grande dame, and is known for its superb service, understated elegance and, naturally, discretion. Rub shoulders with racing car drivers, world leaders and pop stars in the sensational Japanese restaurant Miyako Lausanne, check into the Cinq Mondes spa for a swim and a massage, then prise yourself away for a stroll around Lausanne itself. At this time of year, chestnuts are roasted outside pristine department stores, so warm your hands and tummy while dashing between shops for last-minute Christmas gifts. A trip to the chocolatier Blondel is essential – the spicy dark variety is especially tasty. Then retreat to the hotel’s all-year heated terrace for a glass of champagne and to watch the sun set over snowy Mont Blanc. brp.ch/en/home.html

CRYSTAL CLE AR

Make crystal-inspired luxury part of your daily ritual, courtesy of Lalique

P “PERFUME IS ALWAYS BETTER IN A BEAUTIFUL BOTTLE”

erfume is the most intimate form of luxury. Its application allows a moment of escapism, a time for yourself. And to make this experience of luxury in everyday life more special still, Lalique has created the Mon Premier Cristal collection. Its trio of fragrances are housed in crystal flacons with a contemporary design by artistic director Marc Larminaux. These objects of desire, with elegant atomisers, are destined to be as much a part of daily rituals as they are to be collector’s items. Each scent interprets crystal in a different state. ‘Facets, transparency, an in-depth knowledge of high quality materials – crystal and perfumery have a lot in common,’ says perfumer Karine Dubreuil-Sereni. ‘We always say that when our fragrance is in a beautiful bottle, it smells even better.’ Dubreuil-Sereni’s heavenly SENSUEL conveys the warmth of molten crystal. Its flame-hued fruit – mandarin and peach – segue into the vanilla accents of heliotrope. And at its heart are lush tonka bean and Madagascan vanilla. Amber notes fan the flames. Alexandra Monet’s floral LUMIÈRE evokes the brilliance of sculpted crystal. It enchants immediately with luscious almond; then regal tuberose, the most captivating white flower, is accented by green, narcotic jasminum sambac. Lumière blends darkness and light, tradition and modernity, simplicity and sophistication. TENDRE is Sidonie Lancesseur’s exquisite vision of satined crystal. Luminous Turkish rose is enhanced by playful pear and fresh lily of the valley. Conjuring the softness of a fresh bloom, Tendre leaves a delicate veil of vanilla and white musk. The Mon Premier Cristal Collection is available from Lalique boutiques and Harrods, £550 per 80ml

Chloé is synonymous with cool, feminine fashion – and now it’s reimagined and bottled.

he fragrance scene’s very own Jay-Z, Michel Almairac was commissioned in 2008 to create a scent that captured the iconic Chloé label. The brief cited airy ambience, veils, muted light and a boudoir scent with a definite nod to flowers – especially roses, a symbol of French romance. In short, a scent that conveyed the confident, free-spirited and fashionable femininity of the Chloé woman. Almairac – born in Grasse, the world’s perfume capital – put the rare centifolia rose at the core; exploring its unrevealed facets and enhancing it with notes of peony, lychee, freesia, white musk and warm amber. The result changed perfume forever. An overnight success, embraced by women worldwide, it became an industry icon. Almost a decade on, Almairac has a new trick up his sleeve: Absolu de Parfum, a limited edition reimagining of the Chloé original. Consistency is maintained but enriched by rose centifolia absolute, and the fragrance continues to embody the label’s cool, chic femininity. It’s both instantly familiar and a unique, contemporary reinterpretation. ‘Seductive,’ says Almairac, ‘and more intense.’ The square, pleated glass bottle mimics a Chloé blouse, with a pretty hand-knotted nude ribbon. (It takes an hour to produce twenty-four meters of the latter.) The usual handcrafted silver collar is gold for this celebratory edition, whose launch sees actress Haley Bennett (above right) takes centre stage as today’s Chloé girl. Charming, stylish and joyous, she follows no path but her own, embracing the scent’s free spirit. Ask any woman why she wears Chloé, and she’ll tell you, ‘Why not?!’ Its tender yet bold floral notes, conjured by Almairac’s magic touch, bring out that self-assured je ne sais quoi in us all. Try it to find out.

THREAD LIFT

FACIALS

‘Collagen production diminishes by one per cent a year from the age of twenty-five,’ says Dr Marwa Ali (phiclinic.com). ‘By our forties, this has escalated considerably. Without underlying collagen, skin becomes lax – resulting in sagging cheeks, drooping jowls and a crepey neck – and loses its peachiness and glow.’ The good news is that with a suture or several, this can be remedied. After a local anaesthetic – said to be the least comfortable part of the process – Dr Ali injects a cannula into the cheek. This deposits a suture beneath the skin. Its knots attach to flesh, enabling the threads to be tightened. The result: an immediate lift. Dr Ali’s preferred threads, Silhouette Soft, stimulate collagen production to improve elasticity and skin quality. ‘It’s why I prefer a thread lift to an actual facelift,’ she notes. ‘With the knife, you’re not improving skin quality. With the thread lift, you most certainly are.’

St Petersburg-born Nataliya Robinson (nataliyarobinson.co.uk) is the perfect post-procedure facialist. ‘When my clients have fillers, they suffer water retention and puffiness,’ she says. ‘I use a technique adapted from massage developed in the 1930s for postcosmetic surgery.’ Robinson’s speciality is ‘not treating wrinkles – it’s more taking care of the skin’. And there can’t be many facialists in London preparing their own skincare: ‘I have special herbs to massage into the skin; then calendula, camomile and aloe to soothe; followed by a very gentle extraction, and a lactic acid or aloe mask.’ And, she adds, ‘I use smashed coral, in a lotion massaged into the skin, to reduce scars, redness and improve circulation. Obviously the sides are smooth!’

DERMATOLOGY

FILLERS

A consultant dermatologist and your go-to for issues such as eczema and acne, Dr Susan Mayou (cadoganclinic.com) ran the paediatric dermatology clinic at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the paediatric and adult clinic at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton. She’s a star with the cosmetic dermatology needle, and mole-mapping and removal – all conducted with a glorious bedside manner.

In 1992, Wayne’s World was released, Whitney’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ inspired many a karaoke diva, and Dr Rita Rakus (drritarakus.com) began injecting fillers. ‘I’ve been dubbed “the London lip queen” for my subtle and artistic lips,’ she says. She was even given a lifetime achievement award by Restylane, one of the most popular dermal filler brands. Her techniques have evolved to suit changing tastes. ‘Over the years,’ she says, ‘my ladies have wanted more subtle lips. The variety of filler strengths enables me to tailor my lips; from fine lines, to volume and the corners of the mouth. My main aim is subtle rejuvenation.’

MUST-HAVES

EYES

● Plastic surgeon Dr Dirk Kremer trained in burns and reconstructive surgery. So it’s no surprise his new product line SkinDoc formula – packed with peptides and stem cells – is proving a hit. The hero product Centennial Skin (£180, fenwick.co.uk) delivers five unique peptides, molecularly identical to growth factors found in the human placenta – but, of course, all synthetically derived.

Lucky for London: Dr Maryam Zamani (drmaryamzamani.com) trained at Washington DC’s George Washington University School of Medicine to be a board-certified ophthalmologist. But she relocated to London and specialises in cosmetic eye treatments, both invasive and noninvasive. Her Tri Eye treatment lifts the eyebrows, improves the texture and clarity of skin on that hard-totreat area, and works like a charm.

BOTOX

Botox has become the most popular in-clinic procedure, its brand name as entrenched as Hoover and Post-it. Dr Tracy Mountford (cosmeticskinclinic.com) was one of the doctors to pioneer its use, more than twenty years ago. How has that changed in the years since? ‘The main difference is that people no longer need to look like their forehead has been ironed,’ Dr Mountford says. ‘Completely immobile looks fake, unattractive, prematurely ageing and very odd. I favour low doses of Botox, all over the upper face. It looks very natural, while allowing some movement.’ Other uses have emerged. The ‘Nefertiti neck lift’ entails ‘Botox injections to the platysma bands [neck muscles] to rejuvenate the neck and improve the jawline’.

IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME… Looking ten years younger with Dr Dirk Kremer

T

he talk of the town since he opened his Harley St Aesthetics clinic, plastic surgeon Dr Dirk Kremer’s most requested procedure is the facelift. Over twenty years, his technique has evolved to become the T-B-T (‘Turn Back Time’); such an innovative procedure that its name has been trademarked.

‘A great facelift is one that goes unnoticed by friends and family,’ says Dr Kremer. ‘I like my patients to look fantastic, rested and rejuvenated, rather than different. Few of my patients want to change their looks. The majority seek simply to turn back the clock and remove ten years from their face.’ Looking ten years younger? We’ll take that. But how is it achieved? ‘We all have fat pads under the skin, covering the bony parts such as the cheeks and eye sockets. But gravity pulls the fat down, and it reduces in volume, leading the face looking loose and lined.’ The T-B-T secures fat pads in their original positions and, along the way, excess skin is removed; vertically rather than laterally, to avoid stretched ‘Joker’ mouths and unnatural appearances. Dr Kremer is also leading the charge with a new skincare line, SkinDoc formula, championed by the press and customers alike. One product to note is the Day Watch serum (£140, fenwick.co.uk), which combines a high concentration of the powerful antioxidants ferulic acid and vitamins C and E. These fight free radicals, one of the prime causes of skin ageing. Get it to your bathroom shelf post-haste, before it sells out – again. harleystreetaesthetics.com; 0845 519 7232

resurfacing and PRP, the highly effective platelet-rich plasma treatment that’s been dubbed the ‘Vampire’ lift. ‘I have lots of enquiries from patients worried about jowls,’ Dr Rakus notes. The bad news, she explains, is that elastin and collagen in the dermal layer of the skin deplete naturally as the years pass, causing the jawline to sag and form ageing jowls. The good news is that intervention can help: ‘There are a number of options, such as filler in the cheeks. This creates volume, which will lift the skin lower in the face – and, therefore, the jowls.’ Alternatively, the ‘Nefertiti’ lift involves Botox injected in the depressor muscles of the lower part of the face. This pulls up the skin, for a sharper jawline and smoother neck. An alternative for anyone not keen on needles is the ULTRAcel device. This uses radio-frequencies and ultrasound to contour the face and tighten the skin, lifting the jowls. Then there’s Exilis: a computer-controlled device that delivers energy to the deep levels of the skin: ‘The collagen network is strengthened and stimulated, to improve skin laxity and jowls.’ Long face no more!

That place is Annabel’s. After an extensive (and expensive) move, the club reopens this winter in a huge Georgian townhouse, just two doors from the iconic original. Stepping through this marvel’s intriguing scarlet doors on Mayfair’s Berkeley Street is like stepping into another world: 1930s Shanghai perhaps, or a rakish nightclub in prewar Paris. It is beautiful, theatrical and provocative. A wedding here is not for the faint of heart, but for the bride who throws caution to the wind, then slings her pearls after it. Velvet-covered walls, plush chairs and plenty of corners for cosy têteà-têtes offer intimacy, while the stage is just waiting for live music and dancing to fill the room. parkchinois.com

Holding up to 250, and with room for all the flowers you can dream of, this is the place for a truly lavish celebration. You need a lot more than kickass organisational skills to be a wedding planner for the jet-set. Impeccable taste, for starters. An ability to stay ahead of trends. Fashion flair, discretion and empathy. And ice-bucketfuls of cool. All things that Anna McGregor and Lotte Martin have in abundance. Thanks to their high-end event-planning company LAMP, Anna and Lotte are used to working with talented creatives across the globe; arranging lavish parties and fairy tale nuptials from Cape Town to Cap Ferrat. So when entrepreneur and Urban Retreat founder George Hammer sought tastemakers to curate his latest venture – luxury retail outlet The Wedding Gallery, in London’s Marylebone – the duo were a natural fit. Tessa Clayton spoke to Lotte and asked her to tell us about the project, as well as her and Anna’s shared passion for a great dry martini… 118

Can you explain the concept of The Wedding Gallery?

There’s been nothing else like it before. It’s a one-stop destination where customers can come to browse all the latest wedding trends, ideas and inspiration – from dresses and jewellery to cakes and stationery – in the company of their own Wedding Gallery consultant. It’s more of an experience than a store. How did you get involved?

At a party! Anna happened to bump into Andrew Morrow, one of our business partners, on a night out. She’d organised his best friend’s wedding a few years ago, and he’d known me for years as our paths had often crossed… He was so keen to talk to us about this ‘new wedding concept’ that we met at his house the very same weekend so we could get the ball rolling. Soon we were introduced to George and knew pretty quickly that we were the right

The 20,000 sq ft store, set over two floors, provides a relaxing, creative environment in which to choose your dream outfit and plan the perfect wedding

Outside of our industry, there are plenty of artists and designers who inspire us. Fashion-wise we absolutely love what Mary Katrantzou produces, it’s so exciting. And we can’t wait to see what Edward Enninful does with Vogue. He’s not strictly a designer but he’s a true creative. What about the venue itself? What does One Marylebone bring to the experience?

It’s the ideal location – it’s such a stunning building. It’s Grade I listed and was designed by Sir John Soane, whom we hugely admire. The interiors have come together beautifully, thanks both to the architect, Christian Lahoude, and George himself, who has a great eye for antique pieces. We absolutely love the warm parquet flooring, and the interesting pieces that have been refurbished to bring even more character to the space. We’re thrilled that the Club area has been furnished by Greathire, so that all the furniture that clients and industry members see is available to hire. So not only is it beautiful, it’s also a useful resource.

You both have an art-school background [Lotte and Anna are graduates of Central Saint Martins]. Did you ever consider other careers?

team to bring the concept to life. It’s been an enormously fun, inspiring partnership. You’ve put together a truly exciting collection of brands and suppliers. Can you tell us about the curation process?

At the outset it made sense for us to approach companies we know, love and trust – and they were incredibly enthusiastic and supportive. But we then had the privilege of getting to know a huge range of new suppliers, venues and creatives. All of them bring something different and unique to the space. It’s such a creative industry and every brand has its own style and aesthetic. We’re confident the Gallery has something for every type of client. Which brands do you feel are the standouts?

It’s impossible to choose – but, just off the cuff, I think it’s fantastic to have Gina on board. It’s such an iconic brand, and

few people realise that all their shoes are designed and made right here in London. Bo & Luca are also very exciting as we’re their first UK stockist; the buzz around them is huge. The dresses are beyond pretty, so we know that they’ll be flying out of the door. In the stationery world, Chiara Perano from Lamplighter London must be one of the most creative people out there right now – her work is just a dream. Trends are constantly changing. Where do you find inspiration?

Everyone is looking for new ideas, all of the time, and that’s one of the reasons clients come to us – to access our black book. We’ll definitely be opening the door to new people to be included in the Gallery; whether in our trends area, or by sponsoring a space or hosting an event. It’s so important to us that the Gallery supports young, creative companies, as this keeps things interesting for clients.

119

No! The events industry is the perfect mix of creativity, business, customer service and logistics – it keeps our brains busy. It’s hard work but we always try to make it fun and keep things in perspective, and be nice to each other. Our ethos is the same in everything we do: be kind, professional and honest. Having a strong team in-house and trusted suppliers at the very top of their game means we can always exceed our clients’ expectations. And when you’re not working…?

Downtime has been a rare thing for us for the last few months. We’re always jetting off for meetings, networking or buying trips. We managed New York, Paris and Venice in the space of three weeks and opened the Gallery! If we do get downtime, Anna spends it with her gorgeous son, and together we’re always keen to explore London and new restaurants or bars – anything Asian and a great dry martini are always top of the list. the-weddinggallery.com

n the past decade, the Maldives has become a hub of hotel activity. Tiny atolls bustle with overwater villas and ever more extravagant one-upmanship; from underwater restaurants and nightclubs beneath the sand to menus of Kobe beef and air-conditioned beach bars. If that’s your kind of thing, marvellous. But for those who long for authenticity and a charm that derives from a more relaxed – but no less exacting – experience, there’s Gili Lankanfushi. A short hop from Malé by speedboat, the resort has an excellent heritage. It was originally part of the Soneva and Six Senses group, founded by Sonu and Eva Shivdasani – the first people to recognize the Maldives’ potential, and who spearheaded an ecologicallyminded, barefoot experience. A sale to hoteliers par excellence the Ongs secured both its future and its distinctive atmosphere. For all travellers, but particularly honeymooners, that atmosphere is one of luxurious escapism. Heeding the ‘no shoes, no news’ maxim coined by Sonu Shivdasani, guests remove their footwear on the boat to the resort and remain barefoot for their stay. A small gesture with a powerful effect, it whisks you into holiday mode.

The villas are delightful: thatched and overwater, with generous decking for sunbathing, and from which you can slip into the Indian Ocean. The sea is pearlescent and the white seabed smudged with coral, through which reef shark weave and iridescent squid pulse. Inside the villas are no gold taps or bling. Nothing is out of place or jarring to the eye, and air conditioning in the main spaces is provided by a sea breeze from the open walls. Yet the rooms are luxurious, with rooftop terraces from which to watch the stars, vast lounging spaces and bathtubs with sunset views. There’s also the game-changing addition of personal butlers, hailed at the touch of a button. But the mode here is natural, friendly and unpretentious, encouraging us to interact with our surroundings. The television, for instance, is hidden – the better to encourage us to experience an outdoor cinema tucked in a thicket of palms, and a starlit screening of The Philadelphia Story. A convivial infinity pool area is enhanced by loungers facing the sea. The main restaurant boasts buffets of Indian curries and Vietnamese pho. And in the kitchen garden, you can dine in a treehouse, the perfume of mint and basil rising from below. Offshore, there’s diving and snorkelling, the latter to a reef where you might be eyeballed by curious green turtles, and witness fish in a carnival of colours. After all, honeymoons are heavenly, but even better when there’s something to do other than gaze into your beloved’s eyes. Surfing at nearby Ninjas, one of the Maldives’ most established breaks, offers the opportunity to carve down wave upon wave, assisted by a guide. Follow that with a wellearned, muscle-soothing visit to Gili’s delightful overwater spa. There are sandy paths to sail along by bicycle (the pedals wrapped in fabric to protect bare toes), weaving in and out of shaded tunnels, to a point on the sandbank where the sunset feels close enough to touch. There’s even a hammock suspended above the warm waves. With a carefully carried mojito in hand, this is luxury at its most ingenious and feelgood. gili-lankanfushi.com ✈ Ampersandtravel.com offers seven nights at Gili Lankanfushi from £8,900 per person. On a sheltered private peninsular in the north of the island, surrounded by turquoise lagoons, its Dutch colonial architecture has been refreshed, its breezy villas have been redecorated in marine and white hues, and there’s a sparkling new spa. oneandonlyresorts.com/oneand-only-le-saint-geran-mauritius Africa makes for a memorable honeymoon. Tented Camp has undergone top-to-toe refurbishment, and now offers a chic wraparound bar, a restaurant area of wood and bronze, and a sleek splash pool with lounging area. Tents are authentic yet indulgent, with outdoor swings, vast beds and views of grassy floodplains. At night, elephants crunch past to drink and wash in the rivers. andbeyond.com Off the coast of Africa, the Seychelles comprise some of the world’s wildest islands. A protected ecosystem boasts giant tortoises, rare seabirds and whale sharks. At the Six Senses’ eco-aware resort on Félicité, low-rise, thatched villas are pressed into tall granite hills, among huge, sculpted boulders. With splash pools, ocean views and winding paths to a secret sundowner spot on a sunbaked rock face, it is truly magical. sixsenses.com
