T

his issue, we have been fortunate to work with influencers who are moving and shaking the luxury industry. Women and men at the top of this game work with major fashion, jewellery, travel, beauty and lifestyle brands. They construct, design and deliver creative work through their social media content, to impart the brands’ key messages in their own way. And it’s this uniqueness that makes their audiences log on and, ultimately, sit up and listen. So we at MINE were only too happy to deliver their insights and interpretations of the industry via our magazine. It is our greatest honour to work with the well-respected (and charming!) Peony Lim to deliver the very special announcement of her pregnancy. We’ve long wanted to work together, so the timing was perfect. As a mother, I appreciate how incredibly precious and private such news is. Yet you are so overjoyed that you want to shout it from the rooftops! Peony herself faces an interesting paradox: working in a sphere in which people can freely access you; yet, as far as her personal life is concerned, taking a more private route. When you have loyal followers wanting and expecting to know your every waking move, that’s not always straightforward. As she says in our cover feature (page 26), the announcement needed to be made in an environment that was in tune with her audience but which she felt comfortable with. At the end of the day, she suggests, ‘You have to “do you”.’ Couldn’t put it better ourselves. Peony’s announcement inspired us to cover the need for shifting gears when it comes to your wardrobe. That means dressing when expecting (as delivered by the brilliant Georgie Abay on p44) and staying chic as a mother (not always easy) and dressing your mini-mes (see the flawless Hannah Strafford-Taylor’s edit on p36). Staying true to what she knows best, Peony offers her thoughts on fine jewellery (p12) and what to wear this season (p26). Menswear is taken care of by Mr In-theKnow, aka the marvellous Marcus Butler (p48). And we keep it in the family with our wonderfully loyal Larry King. His work with British style icons such as David Gandy means he’s ideally placed to offer hot grooming tips (p52). It’s holiday season, and no one does travel and fashion better than style guru Amelia Liana. After plenty of globetrotting for work and pleasure, she’s narrowed down this year’s most fashionable destinations and holiday wear (p78). To edit our wedding guide, we welcome back last issue’s cover star, Victoria Magrath (p59). As she glides towards her own summer wedding, Victoria’s made being engaged her business! And, taking it back to base, we celebrate our capital city, London. Nobody pictures it more perfectly than the talented Meandering Macaron (p84). Last but definitely not least, the one and only Mr Tom Ford creates our cover look (p11). Enough said. Enjoy the issue!

Family jewels Allen, Karen and Daisy Adler helm a house based on ‘the emotion of exceptional gemstones’. Here’s their story so far…

I

stanbul, 1886. In this lively city – then the world capital of jewellery – Viennese goldsmith Jacques Adler set up his workshop. With fine talent and a passion for high jewellery, his unique work captured the attention of the great and the good. But he wasn’t to know that he was creating a legacy that now spans four generations. Adler’s son Edouard joined the business in 1937, and navigated it towards the artistic vision for which it has become famed. That unique vision – which marries artistic Oriental tradition with western influences – was honed by the third generation. Franklin, and Carlo Adler spent their childhood eating chocolate cake in the workshops, then grew up ready to take the brand global. Striving for international recognition, the house left Istanbul for Geneva, then spread to boutiques and outlets in London, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, Tokyo and Gstaad.

‘Ballerina’ necklace in 18-ct white gold, set with pearshaped diamonds (8.75 cts), sapphires (13.43 cts) and diamonds (10.10 cts)

TREASURE

Jacques Adler’s legacy is celebrated in a devotion to precious stones. The house continues to explore the potential of rare and unconventional materials, avant-garde designs and intriguing, contrasting textures and shades. Adler’s innovative techniques complement the inspirations that drive its designs. Behind each collection are an array of cultures, paintings, letters and journeys into the unknown. The ‘Amarante’ high jewellery set explores the deepest mysteries of nature, with the aura of an invincible guiding goddess. ‘Nahua’ – the name of the Aztecs’ ancestral group – resounds like a call to its people. The necklace offers the wearer a powerful talisman to protect against a vanishing sun. ‘Kiss Me’ is, as it suggests, a gentle caress from a lover or loved one, paying homage to the delights of the heart. The ‘Millaa’ set celebrates Queensland’s most famous tropical waterfall. White gold, sapphires, diamonds and a black opal, vibrant with deep blue fire, bring its rare, untouched beauty to the fortunate owner. adler.ch | All prices on application

DR SEBAGH

Advanced skincare brand combining French manufacture with unique formulations The Dr Sebagh brand, co-owned by cosmetic doctor Jean-Louis Sebagh and businesswoman and philanthropist Melissa John, is one of the few privately owned skincare brands that formulates and manufactures its own products. This independence enables them to develop unique and powerful formulations using advanced bio-tech ingredients, carefully chosen for their potency and specific benefits in addressing a particular skincare need or concern. The Dr Sebagh brand’s philosophy has always been about the skin’s individual needs, and that ‘feeding’ it properly with the correct ingredients for your skin type, in the right concentration and using the latest bio-technology available, is the key to achieving the best possible skin. Dr Sebagh was the first person to advocate the mixing of different serums to create a personal skincare regime. ‘As a cosmetic surgeon, I don’t believe in miracle skincare creams. But I do believe that good quality skincare can make a real difference to the skin. Feeding the skin on a daily basis with carefully selected ingredients for your own needs is essential to maintain a youthful skin,’ explains Dr Jean-Louis Sebagh. Having won countless awards for excellence the Dr Sebagh brand has many ‘hero’ products loved by beauty insiders, Hollywood celebrities and influencers worldwide. These include Deep Exfoliating Mask, Serum Repair, Supreme Maintenance Youth Serum, Pure Vitamin C Powder Cream and the recently launched Vitamin C Brightening Primer SPF15. Dr Sebagh attributes the success of the brand to his and his partner’s drive for quality and integrity, coupled with the best of France’s manufacturing, with its long history of innovation and excellence.

In 2018, Melissa John, on behalf of the brand, established The Mercury Foundation, to continue and expand their charitable work both in the UK and overseas. ‘Dr Sebagh and I are passionate about what we do and believe strongly in giving back. If we can help causes or charities we believe in, we do,’ says Melissa. The Dr Sebagh brand is sold globally through well-known department stores and online via the brand’s website.

t all began in 2010. Peony was studying at the prestigious Courtauld Institute of Art (where she would achieve a first in Art History), based within the arches of Somerset House. The Courtauld was chosen by the British Fashion Council to host London Fashion Week. ‘It was the very beginning of the “street style” concept being recognised by the fashion press,’ she remembers. ‘I found myself having my picture taken by photographers attending the shows.’ But, one may ask, why Peony? ‘I had my own unique style. While other students were in trainers, I was in heels, a Marie Mercier hat and an Azzedine Alaïa coat. I guess I stood out.’

I N S P I R AT I O N

The process that followed was purely organic: Peony stood out to the right people at the right time. That led to her being featured in international editions of Vogue, Elle, Grazia… the list is long. ‘By the time I graduated,’ she recalls, ‘I’d made friends with lots of photographers, and it was suggested I start a blog to share my inspirations. Within the first month of doing that, I got a contract with Revlon, and tickets to major fashion shows.’ And, just like that, it started to happen for her – just by being herself. Peony, of course, never looked back – and who could possibly blame her? She was at the forefront of her field; one of the original fashion bloggers. ‘It felt amazing,’ she says. ‘But there wasn’t an industry yet, so it was just organic. None of us knew that we were at the start of something huge, but perhaps that’s why it was all so great. We did it because we genuinely had something creative to say. And we were hired simply to create content.’ There were no expectations beyond being oneself, which rang true to Peony. But what of being at the genesis of something that has captivated the world? The role of ‘influencer’ has been recognised by Peony’s generation and become an aspiration for the next. ‘There are parts of it that are really wonderful,’ she suggests. ‘It is one of the only industries where women make more money and have more power than men, so it’s certainly not something to be diminished. It genuinely evolved out of a sisterhood, not the mainstream. Sadly, the uniqueness has, in part, gone. People who weren’t traditional beauties had a space and a voice, and now the media has given us an abundance of white preference, which is what they feel should be the norm; mostly, an unrealistic, homogenised idea of beauty.’ However, Peony’s view of social media is unrepentantly optimistic. ‘The digital space is still so new that we are in the phase of it being like the American frontier. It’s not a fixed space. I think we still can, and will, construct something really special.’ A decade on, Peony is still at the forefront of the social media whirl; in April, she launched her own fine jewellery range. Having always been asked about her personal gems, it made sense. ‘It’s been an amazing experience,’ she beams,

‘with some of my audience buying every single drop. Keeping in mind that I’m asking people to part with thousands of pounds, the fact that they trust me is mind-blowingly humbling. My main goal is to keep it limited, so it remains exclusive to the owner.’ And what of Peony herself: her drive, her message, her aim? Unlike many influencers, she has taken a more private route; which may seem to contradict her role, yet she achieves it seamlessly. ‘I only talk about luxury,’ she notes, ‘and that doesn’t have to include images of my husband, my family or my home; just my work – which to me is an easily defined separation.’ As for being pregnant, and publicly so? ‘It’s very different, and an interesting merging of worlds. I think some influencers would view it as a “content-creating” opportunity because that’s what they’ve always done: shared their life through their stories and posts. For me, it’s given an interesting perspective on how my body is portrayed, which has been very humbling. I have less to hide behind. ‘My whole life hasn’t been about being pregnant. I don’t want it to be the focus of everything. It’s temporary. That said, motherhood is the greatest blessing and I can’t wait to make having a family my focus.’ Doing it her own way seems to be Peony’s recipe for success. ‘I’ve kept my pregnancy news to myself for as long as possible, as it was important to enjoy it for myself, with my family. It’s a constant balancing act. Being a working woman with a family and a life doesn’t come with a guide book. Some women have integrated it effortlessly into their content and I respect them for that. But none of us are obliged to share something so personal, and we are free to express it how we see fit. ‘I say power to you, whoever you are. You have to “do you”. For me, announcing this within my more public working role, as part of an editorial, felt in tune with who I am and who my audience are. It feels natural. Besides, I’ve always done things my own way. I shared my wedding pictures a year late!’ This time around, we’re hoping for a speedier release… 28

The Grace Tales, shares her favourite labels for mothers thegracetales.com

hen I was pregnant with my first child, I was working at Australian Vogue as the deputy editor and fashion features director. I knew nothing about maternity dressing. And, as someone who had always highlighted my waist, my growing bump threw me. Luckily, I was in the business of researching fashion brands; of knowing where to go, no matter what the occasion. I discovered a range of labels that suited my new style, and found that ones I’d loved for years catered for my new shape. I made sure the items I invested in could be worn long after my baby arrived. Here’s my roundup of the best for mothers-to-be… 44

INNIKA

Every mother needs one of Innika Choo’s smock dresses. The Australian in Bali is a mother of two and understands comfort and style. Effortless summer style at its best.

Hugh smocked embroidered linen dress, £395, Innika Choo at net-a-porter.com

MATTEAU Matteau’s resort-wear pieces are perfect for mothers – and guaranteed to be worn for years to come. Tiered cotton-poplin maxi dress, £385, Matteau at net-a-porter.com

Gold cuff, £195, merola.co.uk

HATCH

This is one of our favourite brands for mamas. ‘I live in Hatch,’ says founder Ariane Goldman. ‘I designed pieces around a comfortable and easy, one-stop-shop dressing formula, as that’s how I like to organise my wardrobe. No fuss, no frills; ease and style. That’s all one needs.’ We couldn’t agree more.

Paloma tiered cotton-blend poplin dress, £315, Hatch at net-a-porter.com

SERAPHINA LONDON

Seraphina founder Fiona Hodges’ career has taken her to Vogue and Anouska Hempel, but her greatest passion has always been for fabric – and it shows. Seraphina’s range provides a fresh take on resort and loungewear; using the finest fabrics, in divine prints that are all designed in-house. This gingham dress, in cotton, will be one of the most loved pieces in your wardrobe. Cherry picking maxi dress, £235, seraphinalondon.com

WIGGY KIT

Wiggy Kit – the resort-wear line created by Wiggy Hindmarch – caters for beach, dinner and everything inbetween. The brand is the result of finding a wardrobe filled with ‘holiday-ready’ clothes that simply didn’t translate to the real world. The beautiful, bohemianinspired collections (minus any froufrou) really are a worthwhile investment for both travelling in style and spending lazy summers at home. wiggykit.com

Style saviours The best pieces to buy now for mothers on the move

These sunglasses will brighten your day – even if you haven’t slept.

Sunglasses, £55, Le Specs at net-a-porter.com

A total wardrobe essential, this makes summer dressing a cinch. Embroidered cotton kaftan, £595, Pippa Holt at net-a-porter.com

I have a wardrobe full of Dôen dresses. They’re ideal for preand postnatal wear.

Sol shirred floral-print cotton-voile maxi dress, £325, Dôen at net-a-porter.com

My new fave! Just add a white tee and sneakers and you’re good to go. Beatnik high-rise slim-leg jeans, £343, SLVRLAKE at net-a-porter.com

46

This Three Graces London dress is an essential. I would happily live in this label all summer long.

Alette cutout cotton-poplin midi dress, £520, Three Graces London at net-a-porter.com

I never purchased a baby bag. Instead, I used a raffia basket. The dream? This divine raffia basket from Loewe. Large leather-trimmed woven raffia tote, £325, Loewe at net-a-porter.com

Buy these in multiple colours and wear them year-round. They come in mini sizes too!

SDU HEXA rubber-trimmed mesh and vegan suede sneakers, £95, Veja at net-a-porter.com

Now that I finally have my waist back, I spend most of my time in skirts (or jeans). And, as a floral lover, this is my dream print.

Bloom floral-print linen skirt, £245, Ephemera at matchesfashion.com Quartz cuff, £860, merola.co.uk

Velvet Texture Clay, £22 for 50g, larryking.co.uk

INVEST IN A GOOD STYLING PRODUCT and learn how to apply it. My Velvet Texture Clay is great for soft, pliable hold. The velvet part is from how you use it: rub it in your hands, then over your hair in all directions. It’s like touching velvet and makes a huge difference to your look.

For Men Intensive Purifying Mud Mask,

£49.90, Tom Ford at notino. co.uk

INVEST IN AN EXPENSIVE FRAGRANCE that becomes your signature. People will remember you after you’ve left the room. LEAVE YOUR EYEBROWS ALONE (other than trimming extra-long stray hairs).

DON’T BE SHY ABOUT GOING FOR A FACIAL. I love Teresa Tarmey (teresatarmey.com). Her treatments are very focused and use tech and lasers to make a real difference. Her twelve-week, at-home microneedling treatment is amazing.

TRIMMING YOUR BEARD? Harsh lines, particularly under the jawline, are extremely unflattering. Instead, use the trimmer guards to blend the edges to nothing. This gives a much more groomed and stylish finish. 54

love so many dress designers and just how different one can be from another. Someone like Phillipa Lepley has a more traditional, very feminine and princess-like feel to her dresses. But you can go somewhere like Galia Lahav or Gali Karten and find a dress that feels much more seductive and sexy – almost like a lingerie piece. Atelier Pronovias offers the most sultry, sheer designs that the most confident ladies can steal the spotlight in. And rightly so. Both the traditional bridal gown and the sultry, sheer styles are truly stunning. I must admit there have been times that I was tempted to go both ways.

won’t, unfortunately, be leaving my wedding waving my hand like the Queen from an open-top car. But we hope to go to New Zealand for our honeymoon, followed by a trip to Indonesia. And why not go for the fully glamorous newlywed look for the airport? Louis Vuitton has launched luggage that is fun but also the height of travel accessory luxury. Outfit-wise, if you’re travelling to one of the top destinations for your honeymoon, you need to stay comfortable. Throw on your summer hat, so it doesn’t get squashed in your case, and take low heels to ensure you travel in style. I have two destinations to recommend: the Maldives (either Conrad, Mirihi or Gili Lankanfushi) and Malaysia (the Datai Langkawi hotel is just phenomenal). However, Alex and I desperately want to visit Indonesia and the Bawah Reserve.

STATELY DOES IT If the grand country style is right up your street, be it London or home county, Jamb offers exactly what’s needed. From hallway lanterns to stunning fireplaces, the Belgravia specialists have the keys to the look

S

tyle never goes out of fashion – and the world of interiors is no different. This is very much the year of golds and pinks, as the Maison&Objet trade fair predicted in January. But, next January, who knows… So what to do and where to go if you’re looking for true glamour and substance in your home? Well, say hello to Jamb! This stunning Belgravia gallery captures the classic English country house aesthetic. It offers the very finest of antiques and, cleverly, reproduction fire grates, chimneypieces, light and furniture. (Let’s face it: fancy pretty vintage pieces aren’t always in the best of conditions.) Handsome husband and wife Will and Charlotte Fisher (pictured above right) founded Jamb in 2003. They painstakingly acquired one of the country’s most extensive collections of antique chimneypieces, including rare seventeenth century, Georgian and Regency surrounds. These reflect the architectural design and craftsmanship of William Kent, Isaac Ware, Robert Adam, Henry Cheere and Sir John Soane. Antique mantels are the backbone of Jamb. Thanks to highly skilled craftsmen at their workshops, they have produced a collection of exceptionally high-quality reproduction chimneypieces. You will find a brilliant range of fireplaces, carefully developed over years and hand-carved to the highest standards, using eighteenth-century traditional techniques.

The range includes designs from early Palladian architectural pieces to finely carved neoclassical mantels. Their reproduction fire grates and lights are handengraved, historically authentic and based on the finest antique originals. Will Fisher gives us the lowdown… Why did you go into interiors?

In pursuit of creating the ultimate country house aesthetic. And why did you start Jamb?

As an antique dealer, I would be in possession of the most wonderful pieces of furniture, lighting and fireplaces. I wanted to be able to continue their life and reach by reproducing them. Regency design mirror, £2,600

What’s your favourite part of the job?

The moment of finding the most wonderful antique, and working on the reproduction collections. What parts of Jamb are you most proud of?

Building a company as husband and wife, from scratch, over the past fifteen years; and the reproduction collections. We now have over 150 designs – both fireplaces and lighting. What furniture do you think every home should have?

A piece with a wonderful, dry, untouched patina. What’s your top tip for dressing a space?

Start with the fireplace! Always a focal point.

Do you believe in redressing rooms between seasons and to suit trends?

Not really. We believe in a timeless interior.

What’s your key advice regarding lighting?

Use a lot of lamps and be bold, with larger pieces in hallways. Our globe lighting is a dramatic statement. What question are you most asked by your clients?

How to choose the correct proportion for the fireplace in a room. Are there any interior faux pas you would advise against?

We would prefer a mirror or a painting above a fireplace, rather than a TV! What is your most treasured piece?

Large carved Giallo Antico Grand Tour model of the Temple of Castor and Pollux, £32,000

A collection of Grand Tour objects, acquired over the years. If money were no object, what would you purchase as an investment piece for your home?

A fabulous Roman antiquity. jamb.co.uk

Maître Choux Kings Road, Chelsea

It’s hard to decide what’s prettier: the eclairs or this specialist patisserie’s floral interior. I’ve been a fan of head chef Joakim Prat’s eclairs since he founded Maître Choux in 2015, and its one of my top places to visit in London. The new store on the King’s Road has beautiful floral walls and, with the eclairs served on colourful china, it’s perfect for Instagram shots.

Neill Strain Floral Couture West Halkin Street, Belgravia

EL&N

Neill’s boutique showcases beautiful seasonal installations – perfect for that #OOTD shot. He always has a magnificent array available, and the fragrance envelopes you as soon as you enter. It’s my weekend ritual to pop by, purchase my weekly blooms and take a few (dozen) photos.

Hans Crescent, Knightsbridge and Market Place, Oxford Circus

Lip Color in Pink Dusk, £40

EL&N cafés have myriad pretty corners for photos. My favourites are the flower wall at Market Place and the love heart booths at Hans Crescent. And once you try their coconut and passion fruit eclairs, you’ll understand why my friends joke that I’m always at an EL&N café!

Wild Things Flowers

Saint Aymes

Davies Street, Mayfair

Connaught Street, Mayfair

Opposite Claridge’s, Wild Things adds a pop of colour to Mayfair’s stunning facades. With cascading flowers in tall silver vases, and large buckets of flower cuttings, it always brightens my daily walk to work. They refresh their vibrantly coloured flowers every day, so it’s hard not to take a quick photo or “shoefie”.

On leafy Connaught Street, Saint Aymes is another hot spot for beautiful photos. The café’s outdoor floral display is updated every few months and the inside is just as pretty, with walls awash in peonies and hydrangeas. Feeling adventurous? Try their Unicorn Latte. It will have you bouncing around for the rest of the day!

Les Senteurs Elizabeth Street, Belgravia Les Senteurs sits among some of Belgravia’s most beautiful boutiques. Its stunning blue facade is usually decorated with a vibrant floral installation, created by By Appointment Only Design. Once you’ve perused their curated perfumes, pop to the nearby Peggy Porschen Belgravia for a cupcake and pot of tea.

Prêt-à-Portea The Berkeley, Knightsbridge Arguably the most fashionable afternoon tea experience, the Berkeley hotel’s Prêt-à-Portea has been a ritual celebration for my friends and me for more than twelve years. Created by pastry genius Mourad Khiat, the latest tea is a tribute to Dior; with biscuits, cakes and teas inspired by the iconic designer.

Aubaine Selfridges Oxford Street, Central London The beautiful installation at Aubaine Selfridges will have you wondering if the wisteria is real… Conveniently located within the shoe hall at Selfridges, and with a ceiling of purple blooms, Aubaine has long been a favourite pit stop of mine. The patisserie is wonderful and my guilty pleasure is their breakfast pain aux pistaches.
