AWARD-WINNING HAIRSTYLIST ERROL DOUGLAS MBE’S SECRETS
By day he runs one of Belgravia’s most coveted hair salons. By night he wins one award after the other. Nominated for Best British Hair awards for twenty-five consecutive years – as well as being International Hairdresser of the Year and a three-time British Hairdresser Award Afro category winner – there is nothing Errol Douglas doesn’t know about expert hairstyling. He specialises in curls and Afro hair, and his clients include Rihanna, Lewis Hamilton… and, now, MINE cover star Jessica Plummer.
ERROL’S TOP TIPS TO CREATE OR ENHANCE CURLS ‘Learning how to use a diffuser will help achieve volume at home. Use products that give your hair hold, such as a contouring gel, and nourishing and conditioning products such as an oil or masque.
‘For the best results, I apply styling products to wet hair to encourage curls to form and help them hold their shape.
1Dry your hair naturally, with a towel, rather than with a hairdryer.
2Use a diffuser to define curls. Avoid blowing your hair directly – that causes frizz. To form curls, pin your hair up as you dry it. Leave it for five to ten minutes to cool down, then you’ll have the perfect curl.
3To maximize the sheen, add a mist of a light holding spray oil. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF CARING FOR CURLS? ‘Detangling! Textured hair can get quite knotty, especially overnight with friction against a pillow. Using a silk hair turban or pillow can help minimise that. A great shampoo automatically does it too, while the stylers condition and care for the curls.
AND WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES OF CARING FOR VERY CURLY HAIR? ‘Very curly hair needs more nourishment and moisture, and typically less hold than regular curly hair. It can tolerate a richer oil and heavier bases as it absorbs those ingredients better, due to the dryness and fragility of the texture.’
ONE THING THAT SOMEONE WITH CURLY HAIR MAY NOT KNOW… ‘People with curly hair often don’t fully understand their curl pattern. Take a moment to understand what curl you have – ask your hairdresser –then you can choose which products are best for you.’
