The project site is located in downtown Syracuse, NY, which is occupied by Syracuse Technology garden. Thus, this project aims to replace this co-working space with more advanced makerspace where people can show their creativity. Considering the surrounding context, this site can play a crucial role in Syracuse economy. We expect the contexts such as the highest building in Syracuse, hotel, stadium, and convention center can mingle with this site, which potentially draws people to this area as well as downtown Syracuse.

Anbiguous Boundary Location: Syracuse, NY 2018/9 - 2018/11 Team:Minghuan Xie Jiyoon Bae, Zhehui Sun 7

The concept starts from the drop of the ink, when ink is spreading in the water, it will creates shapes with various qualities, also the blending of ink and water makes me thinking about blending of different people and different activities in architecture. So the goal of this design is to create a mixed space that has the quality to connect different activities and people, also can blur the boundaries of surrounding space. This project starts with experimental exercise that explores the two-different materiality, ink, and water. We convert certain moments of this physical figure into digital 3D figures. Later on, two-dimensional figures are created from this digital model, which are used as our architectural language.

There are basic shapes traced by the 2D ink images, by abstract those images, the figures of the ink are created. Then using those figures to create new patterns for the design.

8

The projection of the figures can transfer 2D patterns to 3D volumes.

Maker space, office space, and public space is 3 basic types of program in this design. The massing strategy is making this blurred space into a huge volume and hollow out this ink-space from the volume.

Collaging Genoa Team: Matthew Celmer, Minghuan Xie Location: Genoa, Italy Student housing Genoa Competition 2019/2 - 2019/4

20

Genoa is a city of fragments, disparate elements creating a complex urban mixture. From the old historic center to the sea and port we see Genoa as an urban collage and assemblage. This Design takes inspiration from this heterogenous character to propose a contextual and contemporary architecture. The housing design is composed of a series of contextual architectural forms from the city of Genoa.

21

DESIGN BACKGROUND The Collage Genoa proposal for the Genoa University Housing will reactive the historic Piazza Sarzano while preserving views and access to the Church of San Salvatore. The student housing is elevated above the piazza creating an open ground oor and a new public green roof open to all occupants of Genoa. The elevated

22

student housing will have sweeping views of the city to the north and the port to south. The housings form and architectural language resonates with the complexity of Genoa as a city. The arcade, piazza, sea, port, mountains, bell towers, cloister & fort walls are all contextual references and components of the architectural collage. This suggests the idea of housing as an architecture of fragments, an architecture of the city.

Shanghai City's development has caused many abandoned factories. In architectual aspect, many of those buildings are nonhuman scale and inacessible. The design tries to rethink of those buildings and find a new way to make the abandoned factories contribute to the urban environment.

32

Silo Terminal Terminal Design Location:Shanghai Pudong area 2015/12 - 2016/5

33

Site Analysis

FACTORY AREA

The abandoned grain elevator in Shanghai and it's fast developing surrounding environment.

The terminal references the silo structure with an interest in how people used to occupy and move around this now abandoned piece of historical heritage. Although the silo building has been left behind by progress, it hovers above Huangpu River with its monumental and non-human scale. The contrast between people in movement and the inaccessible building is the departure point for my terminal design. The terminal will express an incomplete, fragmented architecture as a reference to the old industrial past which is forever gone. Its structure will be contemporary and steel-frame to symbolize a new post- industrial China. (New industry is always changing by people’s needs with human scale rather than simply country willing control). Therefore no more heavy, inaccessible, anti-human monumentality, but a light, transparent, accessible environment in a human scale.

Circulation MONUMENTALITY The new silo structures cover with steel and glass extend the monumentality of the original buildings. However, the materials show the transparency and lightness for people's immersion in the building.

TRANSPORTATION The Terminal contains different transportations including Metro station, Bus stop and Ferry. Those transportations create an effiecient circulation that connect different part of this area. When people are attracted to this area, the old factory will be reactive.

This design is aimed to awake people's memory on urban tradition by using the concept of "wall". By follow the historical context of Shanghai, the red mansonry wall is used as the main structure of the architecture, which is standing for the traditional "Shikumen" housing character.

The site is at the north of the old Shanghai city, where the old and the new combined. The aim of this youth hostel is not only providing some space for young people to live in, but also bring more energy to this area, letting people could have more activities, and experiencing a different life style rather than simple modern concrete box. contour drawing means to draw by instinct rather than look at the object. The walking experience of old Shanghai city could be explict by using the method of contour drawing. The experience is different from the real building because activities and people movement have expand the public volume.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE HOUSE 1860

EARLY SHIKUMEN HOUSE 1890

The Traditional house was with a courtyard in the center and people share the rooms in three sides.

Shikumen building hold the character of traditional Chinese house and western townhouse.

LATE SHIKUMEN HOUSE 1930 After the population increasing, the Shikumen houses became the rental houses for citizens.

MODERN BOX HOUSE? NOW? Shikumen houses becomes the history and many of them were replaced by concrete boxs.

Public space

From small scale to large scale, the space of traditional Shikumen housing is organised by the wall. And there is a hierarchy in different scales of public space. 44

Parking Garden Parking Complex Location:Suzhou City 2014/7 - 2014/9

52

The cities in China are fond of construction great and attractive shopping malls, public buildings and city landmarks. However, they usually pay most on “Project” itself and sometimes ignore the surrounding infrastructure, such as the parking experience. As an example, the famous landmark Humble Administrator Garden in Suzhou is a “star “that government pay a lot to make it better. But the only parking place around this area is in a bad condition.

53

Site Analysis

?

The site is an empty area only with mess shrub weeds, which located in the Suzhou old city. It was be surrounded by a represented scenery, the highdensity residential dwellings, expect that it is also on the entering road nearby the main road. So there will be lots of people here, and most of them will be with their vehicles. It could be easily to seen that this mess square is becoming much worse.

The left entrance

The entrance is facing the main street, it's livly and many people walking on this street. The parking garden provides an alternative, convenient and intersting way to go to other places.

The south entrance I believe it is more than building a “Parking garage”, but put the human behavior and the urban context together to create a new “parking complex”. Compared with former parking area, it will not be an appending staff for a building. And this project is a new style parking garden, which will be an individual architecture, and based on this building, there will be more relative service. It is so much potential possibilities for the future development. And in addition, the users will not only be the tourists, the local residents, the neighbor will be shared in the leisure garden.

56

This entrance leads the visitors to another famous garden, Shizi garden. Meanwhile the landscape near this entrance imply visitors the garden is not far away.

Humble Administrator garden Zhuozheng garden is one of the most famous place people want to go in this area. So the parking garden is aimed to provide a better service to those travellers.

The main entrance

This entrance is close to the entrace of the zhuozheng garden. People who drive car to this place can easily go to the destination.

Surrounding residence

There are many traditional residence in this area, those people could also go to this 'parking garden' for their daily life, because the building also provides retails and caterings.

The ‘Climate Utopia’ would promote the method of research-by-design, it will starts with the research of impact of climate change to Chongqing city and then based on the clamate characters to provide an architectural concept to response to the climate change.

CLIMATE UTOPIA

Sustainable Design Location: Chongqing, China 2019/6 - 2019/8

61

Chongqing city is based on Yang’ze River and Jialin river, and mountains surrounded. Even thought there are a lot of water, the city faces the huge problem of high temprature in summer because of the basin landform. In recent years, climate change has influenced the Chongqing city, drought happens with a higher frequency. Therefore, figuring out a solution to reduce the climate change influence becomes significant for Chongqing. By invloving the concept of "wind tower" to local architecture, the new form that can decrease the temprature is generated. This process will start with the analysis of the climate and specifjic topography in Chnogqing city.

The most intriguing part of this competition is the consideration of sewage plant on the site. How to deal with the abandoned sewage plant and bring certain value to the site becomes the most significant task for us. The solution we proposed is keeping the main structures of sewage plant and adaptively reusing it as a component of the whole picture. The roof of this plant is designed as a landscape to connect the interior mall and surrounding infrastructure such as the tunnel roof and water-front park.
