Newcastle MedRevue 2013

Foreword
By Scott Craythorn The world of medicine, in this time and day, is not one shrouded within its own mystery or perplexities anymore, thanks to the rise in popularity of Medical TV shows. While being able to live in a world celebrated by Nielsen ratings brings much excitement to medical students, it also brings to the downfall of one very essential thing that motivates us through our taxing degree: the ability to dream outside the confines of reality. Why? Simply because TV Medicine has portrayed this field in a way larger than life - that maybe, all this talk of changing the world or making a difference is just one of grandeur and opulence, nothing more and nothing less. I have written Which Doctor? to question this - what is the human capability? What is one naively enthusiastic medical student capable of? And on top of it all, why not? Each of our lives are made up of highs and lows, joyous freedom, and entangling challenges. Some are voluntary, and some are not; and when we run up against such issues, we have two choices. The first is to back away. The second, to face the challenge and strive to overcome it. For me, the realization of Which Doctor? has been a mentally, emotionally and physically challenging process. I would like to use this space to acknowledge all those who have helped me achieve that challenge, but there are more than can possibly be named! First and foremost I wish to give great thanks to the whole cast and crew of Which Doctor?, for their patience, passion and conscientiousness with which they have approached an onerous process. Each and every one is a testament to the talent, intelligence and adaptability which flourishes in the University of Newcastle BMed program. I would also like to thank my friends for their support and my partner for her patience, understanding and belief in me and the show you are here to see tonight. Finally I want to thank my parents and my sister, who not only taught me valuable practical skills which have been instrumental in the creation of this musical, but more importantly, taught me that any challenge can be overcome if I never stop dreaming. And so to all those who helped make Which Doctor? a reality, I say a wholehearted and completely inadequate Thank You! You are all so wonderful, and you make the world a beautiful place! If you take one thing away from this show, let it be a sense of joy, and if this feeling is only a hundredth of what this show has brought me, then it would be worth the toil..
Scott
The Production Crew ScottBMed Craythorn 4
Director, Producer, Writer Scott proves to be a natural at producing plays, simply because this is only his second involvement in stage productions! In producing Which Doctor?, a process that started nine months ago, Scott draws from his experiences as co-director and starring role in last year’s production, his time as a trombonist and clarinetist in various jazz bands and orchestras, and from his long-standing interest in dissecting and understanding all forms of media, from literature, to film, to music. Besides writing Which Doctor?, Scott has also constructed all the physical props and backdrops you will be seeing in tonight’s play. As the main man behind Which Doctor?, Scott only hopes that the audience gains a holistic musical experience from this production, and to walk away from the play feeling inspired.
Hannah Coleman BMed 2 Coreographer
Hannah’s career in Dance is one that leaves jaws hanging - among others, she has danced in Canada, New Zealand and America, has been a part of the NZ National Cheerleading and National Hip Hop teams, has choreographed for international solo dancers, has won numerous prizes in international dance and choreography competitions, is a holder of various dance scholarships, and is currently training full-time students in the Australian National College of Dance - all of this accomplished by the age of 24! Hannah hopes that the dance numbers in Which Doctor? blows the audience away, from its tangoes, to salsas, to 80s fitness dances, and with some numbers having more than 30 people on stage at once!
The Production Crew
Fletcher Charlton BMed 4 Music
Fletcher is the epitome of a multi-talented medical student, having been a drummer and song-writer in a professional rock band for two years prior to commencing medicine. During his time as a member of ‘Darley’s Angels’, Fletcher toured the east coast, opened a number of shows for neo-alternative bands, and released two EPs and a studio album. Besides song-writing and playing the drums, Fletcher also plays the guitar and bass guitar (which he will be playing tonight). Fletcher sees his role in the music production of Which Doctor? as the person who “brings the ideas that sound bad but ocassionally turn out good”, and is excited for the audience to see the creative side of medical students.
AlistairBMed Thomson 3 Music
Alistair is a classically trained pianist in the Suzuki Method, having played the piano for 16 years now. In the production of Which Doctor?, Alistair brings his experiences in music production and score arrangement from his various musical involvements, from playing the piano in jazz bands, classical quarters, and at weddings, to playing in large-scale musicals back in high school. Having worked as a piano tutor since the age of 12, Alistair’s warmth and nurturing trait is also invaluable in the process of working with our singers, musicians and producers over the course of this production, from its days in the writing process, to its final dress rehearsals. Also playing the piano tonight, Alistair hopes that the audience stays captivated and enchanted throughout the show.
The Production Crew James Wayte BMed 2 Stage Manager
James’ experience in stage productions include playing Chlamydia (so well, that this role has returned for another year) and dancing in last year’s MedRevue. Always in search of a challenge, James is excited to make a move from the limelights of front-stage to the logistics and chaos called backstage. To be certain the night goes as smoothly as possible, James has ensured everyone that he knows the curtains inside out, and has befriended every mic, headset, stage light and prop involved in Which Doctor?. As Stage Manager, James hopes that the night is perfect, from the moment the lights in the hall dim, to the turning on of the first stage light, to the very end, when the curtains close.
Ming Yong BMed 3
Promotions and Publicity Ming has been involved in the promotions and publicity of countless events, but has never been a part of a production filled with so much passion and adrenaline as Which Doctor?. Over the production of this musical, Ming has Google-searched 1037 unique photos of TV doctors in designing its posters and promo materials, has pieced this programme together, from its design to stapling them, and with Scott, launched its internet and social media campaign. As the person in charge of promotions and publicity, Ming hopes that the audience walks away from this play in awe and will hold on to this programme as remembrance of this grand and majestic night. Ming also hopes that the audience does not go home annoyed by the flash from his camera.
Starring
Emma Curé BMed 2 Mel
Prior to medicine, Emma spent two years in Biomedical Science and ever since watching MedRevue last year, Emma has swore to be a part of it. This production is Emma’s debut to the world of stage productions, and Emma is very happy to finally get a chance to showcase her ‘black woman’s voice’. In the role of Mel, Emma hopes to bring a sense of naive enthusiasm, one that exists within the hearts of all medical students. Emma hopes that spectators of Which Doctor? walks away with goosebumps, and on a deeper level, a feeling of having seen a little bit of themselves in its various characters and a realisation that even an insecure young medical student can change the world.
Ned Merewether BMed 1 The Physician
Having only just finished high school last year, Ned would have never imagined already being the star of a large-scale musical production this early in his university life. Ned is no stranger to the world of stage productions though, having starred in an impressive two musicals and two plays throughout high school, which includes a production of Spamalot and Little Shop of Horrors. Ned hopes that his naturally awkward and quirky personality shine through in his role as The Physician, and hopes that the audience walks away from the show feeling slightly confused, but absolutely amused.
SteveBMed Grimson 3 The Bachelor
Steve is no new customer to the world of MedRevue, having also played one of the main characters in last year’s production. Steve is optimistic at his ability to bring suave to his role as Which Doctor?’s antagonist, and an evil laugh so eerie, it echoes in your ears days after you watch this show.. Steve is hoping that spectators of Which Doctor? will feel terrified, but strangely aroused by The Bachelor.
AliceBMed Pearlman 3 Hotlips
Alice, who has completed a B.Science prior to commencing the BMed Program, attributes her involvement in this year’s MedRevue to a quarter-life crisis she has been suffering from. All jokes aside, Alice brings her hot lips and a black lacey pushup bra to her appropriately named character, and hopes to walk away from this production with a nomination at the next Tony Awards for Best Supporting Character.
Andrew Shannon BMed 1 Tent
Andrew is neither a stranger to university life nor to revues, having already completed a degree in neuroscience and been a part of the Science Revue. As Tent, Andrew hopes that the his cynicism, sarcasm, and general distaste for the world and everything in it is evident, and hopes that the audience walks away from this production feeling nothing beyond fifteen dollars poorer.

Your MedSoc The University of Newcastle Medical Society (UNMS) is the peak representative organisation for medical students at the University of Newcastle. The Society (affectionately known as ‘medsoc’ on campus) represents over 650 medical students. Since starting in 1978 the UNMS has grown and matured into a multi-faceted organisation that organises a broad range of services for its members, including: representation, academic events, charity initiatives, welfare support, social events and sporting events. MedRevue, an annual initiative, seeks to bring together the creative minds of the BMed Program, and through such a production, provides these students a creative outlet and a chance to meet like-minds within the program.
