The Miracle of Commanding the Rain
Lesson
4
Once in Madinah, there was a time when there was no rain. This made life very hard for the people living in Madinah, because they had no water to drink. During this time, Prophet Muhammad s was giving a talk to the people in his mosque. A man stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Our animals have died and our children are crying. So please pray to Allah to give us rain. When the Prophet s heard this, he prayed to Allah for rain. The sky was clear, and nobody could see a single cloud in the sky, but as soon as the Prophet s raised his hands to pray, the sky was filled with clouds.
26
Minhaj-ul-Quran Minhaj-ul-QuranIslamic IslamicStudies Studies--Level Level22
There were so many large clouds in the sky that they looked like mountains. When the people left the Prophet’s mosque, they walked home in the pouring rain. It rained without stopping for a whole week! The next week when the Prophet s was giving a talk to the people, the same man stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Our things and our homes are getting damaged because of the rain, so please pray to Allah that He stops the pouring rain.” When the Prophet s heard this, he smiled. He raised his hands to pray and he said, “O Allah! Send the rain around us, but not on us.” As soon as the Prophet s prayed, the rain moved away from the city of Madinah where the people were, and it went to the area around the city. The sky in Madinah was clear and the sun was shining bright. It was still raining around the city of Madinah and the people there were happy with the well needed rain. (al-Bukhari)

Allah, the All Powerful
Allah is so powerful that only by saying the word ‘Be!’ He made everything in this world and the whole universe when there was nothing.
The Qur’an tells us: o
The heavens and the earth belong to Allah alone, and Allah has perfect control and power over everything.
13
Minhaj-ul-Quran Islamic Studies - Level 3 o
Allah is the Most Powerful and the Almighty.
o
Allah creates whatever He wants.
o
We need Allah, but Allah does not need us. Allah does not need anyone or anything.
o
If Allah wanted to, He could make human beings go away and make a new creation. This is not hard for Allah to do.
Prophet Muhammad s told us all about Allah. He said: o
Allah is always fair, so we should always be fair to each other.
o
Only Allah can help us, so we should pray to Allah to help us to be good Muslims.
o
Only Allah can feed us, so we should pray to Allah to give us food.
14
Allah, the All Powerful
o
Only Allah can give us clothes, so we should pray to Allah to give us clothes.
o
Only Allah can forgive us when we do bad things, so we should pray to Allah for forgiveness.
o
We cannot help or harm Allah. Even if Allah gave us everything we asked for, it would not lessen Allah’s power.
o
Our deeds are recorded, and Allah will judge us for them. Those who do good deeds should praise and thank Allah and those who do not should only blame themselves.

Lesson
2
Who are the Prophets?
Ever since Allah made human beings, He sent special people to deliver His message, so that people know how to live in a way that makes Him happy. These special people who delivered Allah’s message were the ‘Prophets’ and ‘Messengers’. Those who accept the teachings given to us by the Prophets and Messengers are known as the believers because they believe in the message of Allah. We cannot receive Allah’s message on our own, so Allah sent Prophets to give His message to us. The Prophets were sent to teach us and help us to be good in this life.

Eating Manners
Food and drink are great blessings from Allah. It is important that we pay careful attention to our food and drink because Allah has given us our bodies to look after and protect. Prophet Muhammad s told us that we need to look after our bodies. We need to eat good, healthy food, so that our bodies become strong and we are able to do things. It is very important that we use the blessing of food in ways that makes Allah happy, and we need to make sure that we do not disrespect food by wasting it or eating too much.
The Sunnah Manners BEFORE Eating 1. Wash your hands carefully. 2. Eat with the intention of making your body strong so that you can worship Allah and do good deeds. 3. Sit down to eat; do not eat when you are standing/walking/ playing.

Lesson

Belief in Allah’s Books
In the beginning, all the people — the children of Prophet Adam e — were part of one nation. Everyone believed in Allah and worshipped Him alone. Shaytan did not like this. He wanted to misguide people and keep them away from worshipping Allah. Some people listened to Shaytan. These people wanted money and power, and they did not want to be kind to other people. They forgot the message that was given to them by their great-grandfather Prophet Adam e. They forgot about Paradise and Hell, and the life hereafter. These people lost the knowledge that Prophet Adam e had given them. The Shaytan whispered in the hearts of these people telling them to change Prophet Adam’s message, and in this way, he misguided them. He told them to make idols and worship them. Some people listened to the Shaytan, but the people who stuck to the truth understood that
worshipping idols was wrong. They were guided by Allah and they told the other people not to worship false gods, but they did not listen.
138
Belief in Allah’s Books The people split into two groups. One group was the people who believed in Allah and worshipped Him alone, and the other group was the people who disobeyed Allah and worshipped idols. Allah did not want the people to be misguided. So, He sent His Prophets and Messengers to them. The Prophets and Messengers were Allah’s special servants and they told people what was right and wrong. They told the people not to follow Shaytan and not to worship idols. Allah gave the Prophets and Messengers special messages. These special messages are known as ‘revelation’. In these ‘revelations’, Allah gave knowledge to the Prophets and Messengers, who then passed that knowledge on to their people. Those who believed and followed the Prophets became the believers, while those who did not believe in them became the disbelievers. Allah rewarded the believers and He punished the disbelievers. Allah wanted to keep on guiding the people to the truth after the Prophets and Messengers passed away. So, He revealed holy books to them as a source of guidance for their people.
139
Minhaj-ul-Quran Islamic Studies - Level 3 These holy books contained all kinds of knowledge and explained to the people how to live a good and righteous life. The people received guidance from these holy books and used them to know what was right and wrong. These holy books gave rules for the people to follow in their lives. There were four important books revealed by Allah to the Prophets. They were:
01
At-Tawrah (The Torah)
This book was revealed to Prophet Musa e. It was a book of law for the Bani Isra’il.
02
Az-Zabur (The Psalms)
This book was revealed to Prophet Dawud e. It contained many poems, prayers and religious songs. 140
Belief in Allah’s Books
03
Al-Injil (The Gospel)
This book was revealed to Prophet `Isa e. It was a book of law and stories that taught many lessons. It had many of the teachings of the Tawrah and confirmed them to be true.
04
Al-Qur’an
This is the last and final book, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad s. It confirmed the central message of all the past books.
Apart from the four holy books, Allah sent many smaller books called ‘scrolls’ (suhuf). These included the scrolls sent to Prophet Ibrahim e.

Lesson 2 Belief in Allah We believe in Allah. Allah is the Arabic word for God. As a Muslim, we believe that there is NO god but Allah.
Allah is One and we do not worship anyone or anything besides Him.
Allah has no partner, and nothing is equal to Him. He
made everything, and nothing is like Him.
Allah has no father or mother. Allah gave us parents to
look after us, but Allah does not need anyone to look after Him. Allah does not need a mother or father.
Allah has no son or daughter. No one can be Allah’s
son or daughter because no one is like Allah. If Allah had a son or daughter, then he or she would be like Him, but no one is like Allah. So how can Allah have a son or a daughter?
Lesson 2 / Belief in Allah
Allah is not a person and He does not have a body.
People have bodies. We have two eyes, two ears, a
mouth and a nose. Allah made these for us because we are people and we need a body. Allah is the Maker. He
is the One Who makes people and their bodies; He does not need a body.
There is nothing like Allah. No one looks like Allah, and
Allah does not look like anyone or anything else. Allah has made us either a boy or a girl. But Allah is not a boy or a girl, nor a man or woman. He is so great that we cannot imagine Him.
Whatever we believe about Allah must be according
to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad s. The Prophet
s taught us about Allah, His Names and Attributes. And we must believe in everything the Prophet s taught us
about Him.
Minhaj-ul-Quran Islamic Studies - Level 6
Our belief in Allah can be found in the following
statement known as ‘al-Iman al-Mujmal’ (The General Beliefs).
Al-Iman al-Mujmal
I believe in Allah as He is with His Names and Attributes, and I accept all His
Commands affirming them with the tongue and believing in them with the heart.
Lesson 2 / Belief in Allah
From this statement, we must know the following
things:
We Must Believe in Allah as He is • We must believe about Allah only what Prophet
Muhammad s taught us. This means that we must
believe in Allah as He is described in the Qur’an and hadith.
• We should never make things up about Allah. Our minds cannot understand Allah’s nature. Allah is
beyond our imaginations and thoughts. Whatever comes to our mind, Allah is greater than it.
We Believe in Him with His Names and Attributes • We must believe in Allah’s Names as they have come to us through the Qur’an and hadith. There are 99
Beautiful Names of Allah, which describe Allah’s Being, Attributes and Actions.
• We must believe in Allah’s Attributes, which are His characteristics. There are eight important
characteristics that we must believe in. They are that
Allah is existing, living, knowledgeable, willing, powerful, seeing, hearing and speaking.
Lesson 5 Allah is Forever Allah is forever. This means that Allah has no beginning and no end. Allah was not born, and He will not die.
Everything besides Allah has a beginning and an end. The sun, moon and stars were made by Allah a very
long time ago, and so they have a beginning; and one
day, a long time in the future, they will come to an end. The mountains, skies and seas were all made by Allah.
They all have a beginning, and before the Last Day, they will also come to an end.
Allah made the animals, birds and fishes. There was
a day when they were born; and when they die, they will also come to an end.
Even we are born into this world, and one day we will
die also, when Allah decides. This shows us that we too have a beginning and an end.
Every human being is a creation of Allah. They were
made by Him. No human being can make himself. His life
Lesson 5Lesson / Allah5 is/ Self-Sufficient Allah is Forever
is given to him by Allah, the All-Powerful Creator. Only the Creator, the One Who made us all, can be the
One True God. If someone is born and is a baby in the
cradle, it means he cannot be God, but only a creation of Allah.
This is because a person who is born or dies cannot
control his own life, and so that person cannot be God. Everything we see, hear or touch is Allah’s creation.
Allah made everything, and no one made Allah. There is
nothing in the whole universe that is not Allah’s creation. Allah has always been ‘the Maker’ and ‘the Creator’.
Even when there was nothing, Allah was alive. Allah said, ‘Be’, and He made the whole universe from nothing.
When we were born, we were small, and every day
we grew bigger until we could walk and talk. We kept on changing, but Allah does not change.
Allah was never small, and He does not grow. He is the
same today just like He was in the past and will continue to be the same in the future just like He is today. This is because Allah does not change, and He is forever.
Lesson 24 Paradise and Hell Allah knows everything that we do. On the Day of
Judgement, Allah will ask us about our actions. If we did
good deeds, we will be rewarded. But if we did bad deeds, we will be punished.
If a person’s good deeds are more than their bad
deeds, they will go to a special place called Paradise (Jannah).
Paradise (Jannah) is a very beautiful place, nobody
has ever seen anything like it before. There is nothing in this world like it.
In Paradise (Jannah), no one will die or become old.
Everyone will be young, healthy and very beautiful.
Everyone will live forever and not be scared of anything or have any worry. Allah will never be angry with its people, and He will always be happy with them.
The Prophet Muhammad s told us that the first group
of people who enter Paradise (Jannah) will appear like
the full moon. The second group will appear like the most beautiful bright star in the night sky.
Lesson 24 / Paradise and Hell
The Prophet s also told us that Allah has prepared for
its people such beautiful and amazing things that the
eyes have never seen, or the ears have never heard of.
There will be such things there that have not come to the mind of any person.
In Paradise (Jannah) everything will be pure and good,
and people will get everything that they want. And there will be markets where people can take whatever they want without having to pay for it. The soil will smell of
musk (a sweet-smelling perfume) and the palaces will
be made from bricks of gold. The people will ride animals that are fast as lightening and that can fly.
The greatest blessing in Paradise (Jannah) will be to
see Allah. The people of Paradise will gather together, and they will remember Allah. During that gathering, all the
people of Paradise will see Allah for the first time. Allah will
talk to every person and give them His greetings of peace, and He will ask every person if they are happy with all the good things they have received.
Minhaj-ul-Quran Islamic Studies - Level 4
Hell (Jahannum), on the other hand, will be a very
terrifying place. It is where wicked people will go as a punishment from Allah for their bad deeds.
People who disobey Allah will not see Him or talk to
Him. In Hell (Jahannum) they will be lonely and hungry, and their punishment will not stop. They will stay there
until Allah decides for them to leave or He forgives them. The people of Hell will call out to Allah to help them, but
Allah will not talk to them. He will not listen to what they
want. The people of Hell will be ignored by all the angels and the people of Heaven. They will not have anything, not even water to drink.
Their punishment will continue forever, and it will not
stop. They will be made to eat plants with sharp thorns and drink boiling hot water mixed with blood and pus. The angels who will punish them all day and night will
Lesson 24 / Paradise and Hell
be deaf and blind, and they will not hear their screams or
cries. They will keep on punishing the people of the Hellfire as they have been ordered by Allah.
The people of the Hellfire will be full of remorse and
sadness. They will wish they had listened to the Prophets
and Messengers and not disbelieved in them. The people
who believed in Allah and His Prophets will ask the people
of the Hellfire if Allah’s promise has come true. The people of the Hellfire will admit that they were wrong, but their belief on that day will not be of any benefit to them.
May Allah protect us from the Hellfire and grant us His
company in Paradise (Jannah) forever. Amin!

Lesson 1 Belief in Allah’s Existence ‘Allah’ is the Arabic word for God. We believe in the ‘existence’ of Allah (God). This means that Allah has always been there, and He is real. Allah is so great that we cannot see Him with our eyes, touch Him with our hand or hear Him with our ears. We are unable to go to Allah directly, so how can we know Him? We know Allah through His Prophets. Allah spoke to His Prophets and gave them His special message called ‘Revelation’. Allah does not speak directly to every person, but He sends His Prophets. The Prophets then teach their people what Allah tells them. This is how we come to know Allah (the One God), His Names, Attributes and Commandments. 12
Lesson 1 / Belief in Allah’s Existence
Allah Gave the Prophets Miracles Allah knew that Shaytan would misguide people and tell people not to believe in the Prophets. So, He gave the Prophets signs to tell their people that they are really Allah’s Prophets. These signs are called ‘miracles’. When people did not believe in Allah, the Prophets performed miracles to show people that they are telling them the truth. But even after seeing the miracles, some people did not want to believe; instead, they called the Prophets magicians and sorcerers. No matter how much the Prophets told them to believe in Allah they would not accept it, and they would accuse the Prophets and say that they are liars or mad. Prophet Muhammad s performed many miracles in his lifetime. Once, the leaders 13

from the Quraysh asked the Prophet s to show them a miracle by splitting the moon in two.
“If I do it, will you believe me?” asked
the Prophet s, and they all said, “Yes.“
So, one night, when there was a full moon, the Prophet s gathered everyone together, and he prayed to Allah to show the disbelievers the miracle that they had asked for. As soon as the Prophet s

prayed to Allah the moon split in two. One half was over Mountain Abu Qays and the other half was over the mountain on the opposite side. The Prophet s called on the disbelievers to bear witness, but they turned away from the miracle and called it magic. Despite seeing the many miracles of the Prophets, the disbelievers did not want to believe. Only those who submitted themselves before the Prophets in humility believed in them and accepted their message. Those who did not accept the Prophets, they disbelieved in Allah and rejected His revelation.

The Prophets Taught Us to Use Our Intellect Allah is so sublime and perfect that we cannot see, hear or touch Him. As we cannot talk to Him directly, we need signs to remind us of Him. The greatest of Allah’s signs are His Prophets, because they know Allah directly, and they tell us about Him. But other than the Prophets and Messengers, Allah has placed many other signs around us to let us know that He exists. The Prophets used these signs to explain to us about Allah’s existence and His greatness. They taught us how to use our minds properly: they explained that everything has a beginning; and if something has a beginning, it means it must have a creator, because nothing comes into existence all by itself. As this universe had a beginning, it means it also had a creator, and that creator is Allah – the One God. Allah commanded Prophet Muhammad s to remind people of these signs, but those who close 16
Lesson 1 / Belief in Allah’s Existence
their hearts and minds to these signs will not understand them and they will not believe.
Story – Imam Abu Hanifah and the Disbelievers A group of disbelievers wanted to debate with Imam Abu Hanifah about the existence of Allah (God). So, Imam Abu Hanifah and the disbelievers set a date for the debate. On the day of the debate, Imam Abu Hanifah did not turn up. The disbelievers waited for a long time until they thought Imam Abu Hanifah would not come. “Imam Abu Hanifah is afraid to debate as he knows he will lose,” said one of the disbelievers, “this is why he has not come.” When the disbelievers were ready to leave, suddenly Imam Abu Hanifah turned up. He apologised for being late and explained the reason.

“As I was making my way,” he explained, “I found myself at the bank of the river. There were no ships to carry me across. I looked around, but I could not see anyone. As soon as I made my mind up to return home, a tree fell; it then started cutting itself into long pieces of wood. The pieces of wood then started to arrange themselves perfectly into a boat, and then the boat was floating on the water. I got onto the boat, and without there being a sailor it ferried me across to the other side of the river, and I was able to come here today.” When the disbelievers heard this, they laughed at Imam Abu Hanifah. “How silly is this story,” they remarked, “how can a boat make itself without a maker and then sail across the river without a sailor?” “You do not believe one word of my story?” asked Imam Abu Hanifah. “Of course not! How can we believe in this nonsense?” cried the disbelievers.
18
Lesson 1 / Belief in Allah’s Existence
Imam Abu Hanifah turned to them all and said:
“If you cannot believe a boat can make itself without a maker, how then can you believe that this whole universe and everything it contains can make itself without a creator?
When the disbelievers heard this, they became silenced. They knew it was not possible for this universe with all its perfection and orderliness to be made all by itself. It could only have been made through an All-Powerful Creator. So, they turned to Allah in repentance and they became believers.

Lesson 9
Sirah: The Night Journey and the Ascension to Heaven Prophet Muhammad s was going through the
most difficult times of his Prophetic mission. He lost his uncle Abu Talib and his beloved wife Khadijah, and he was turned away by the people of Ta’if.
74
Lesson 9 / Sirah: The Night Journey ...
Allah wanted to make the heart of His Prophet s stronger, so He honoured him with a unique and very special gift that had not been given to anyone else before him.
The Night Journey (al-Isra’) One night, while the Prophet s was sleeping near the Ka`bah, Angel Jibra’il came to him and woke him up. He brought with him a white beast that looked like a small horse with wings. This heavenly horse was called ‘al-Buraq’, which means ‘multiple lightening’ in Arabic, and it was so fast that every step it took, it could reach the furthest point that the eye can see.

Lesson 10
Prophet Yusuf e (Part Two) While Prophet Yusuf e was in prison, two men also entered the prison. One night, the two prisoners had a dream. One of them saw himself pressing grapes and making wine. The second man saw bread on his head and birds picking on it. They wanted to know the meaning of their dreams. Prophet Yusuf e told the first man that he would
once again serve the king and he will be freed. As for the second man, he told him he would be crucified and that the judgement has been passed to kill him. The one who was to be freed, Prophet Yusuf e asked him to mention him to the king, so that he may also be freed, but Shaytan made him forget about his promise.
84
Lesson 10 / Prophet Yusuf e (Part Two)
As time passed, one night the king had a dream. He saw seven fat cows being eaten by seven skinny cows, and seven green ears of corn and seven dry ears of corn. When he woke up, he asked his advisors the meaning of this dream, but none of them could interpret it. They told the king it was a confused dream, but the king was not satisfied with this. The man who was freed from prison and now served the king, suddenly remembered Prophet Yusuf e. He promised the king to get an interpretation for the dream. Prophet Yusuf e told the former prisoner that the seven fat cows symbolised seven years of richness while the seven skinny cows symbolised seven years of famine and having no rain for the crops to grow. In those seven years of no rain, they would eat from the grains they stored from the previous seven years.

Lesson 8 Prophets Represent Human Perfection Flint, coal, basalt, limestone, diamond, emerald and ruby are all stones, but they are NOT all equal. The last three are not just stones, but they are ‘precious stones’, known as gems and jewels. Similarly, the Prophets are human beings, but they are special human beings. They have been chosen by Allah to be His representatives and ambassadors on earth.

Prophets Represent Human Perfection
The Prophets are not supernatural beings, such as the angels, but they are the most perfect human beings. They are the best among humanity who have the most excellent examples of human behaviour. In the Qur’an, Allah commands us that if we want to be close to Him, then we must walk in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad s (al-Ahzab 33:21). This is because the Prophet s is not an ordinary human being like us, but he is the most perfect human being who has the best example and most beautiful character.

The Superiority of the Prophets Allah made the Prophets superior over all people. They are the best of humanity. Ibn `Abbas reports that some of the Companions were sitting and waiting for the Prophet s. When the Prophet s came towards them, he heard them having a conversation. One of them said, “How amazing it is that Allah chose a dear friend from among His creation! He chose Ibrahim e as a dear friend.” Another said, “What is more amazing than the speaking of Musa e? Allah spoke to him directly.” Another said, “`Isa e is the Word of Allah and His Spirit.” Another said, “Adam e was chosen by Allah.” The Prophet s approached them, greeted them and said, “I heard your discussion and your
amazement that Ibrahim e is Allah’s Dear Friend
(Khalil Allah) for that is how he is, and that Musa e
is Allah’s Confidant (Najiyy Allah) for that is how
he is, and that `Isa e is Allah’s Spirit and His Word
(Ruh Allah wa Kalimatuhu) for that is how he is, and that Adam e was Chosen by Allah (Safiyy Allah),
for that is how he is. Listen! I am indeed the Beloved 92

of Allah (Habib Allah) and that is no boast.” (atTirmidhi)
The Prophets are the Most Honourable The Prophets were the most respected and honourable people within their communities. However, when they brought Allah’s message, their people rejected them only because they did not want to follow their teachings. For example, Allah mentions the reaction of Prophet Salih’s people: “They said: ‘O Salih, you have been the centre of hope amongst our people before this.’” (Hud 11:62) Prophet Salih’s people recognised his superiority, but they turned away from him only because they were not ready to accept his message. The Prophets were born into honourable families with the best family line. Abu Hurayra reports that the Prophet s said, “I was raised from the best of each generation of the children of Adam.” (al-Bukhari). Wathila bin al-Asqa` also reports that the Prophet
s said, “Allah chose Kinana from the children of 93
Minhaj-ul-Quran Islamic Studies - Level 6 Isma’il, and He chose the Quraysh from among the Kinana, and He chose Banu Hashim amongst the Quraysh, and He chose me from the Banu Hashim.” (Muslim)
The Incomparability of the Prophets The Prophets have no equal among humankind. They are the best human beings who cannot be compared to. They have the finest inner and outer qualities. Regarding Prophet Muhammad’s inner qualities,
Anas said, “The Prophet s was the best of all the
people in conduct and behaviour.” (al-Bukhari and Muslim) When someone asked the Mother of the Believers `A’isha about the Prophet’s character, she asked, “Have you not read the Qur’an?” “Yes,” replied the person. “For verily, the Prophet’s character was the Qur’an.” (Ahmad) The Prophet s also had the best outward 94

qualities. Al-Bara’ said, “The Prophet s was the
most handsome of all the people and had the best appearance. He was neither very tall nor short.” (alBukhari and Muslim) `Ali said, “I have never seen the likes of him before or after. May my mother and father be sacrificed for him.” (Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi) Describing the special features of the Prophet s,
Ibn `Abbas said, “When the Prophet s spoke, a light came from between his teeth.” (ad-Darimi) Hind bin Abi Hala said, “The Prophet s was majestic and he was held in great esteem. His blessed face shone like the full moon.” (at-Tabarani) In one narration, Anas said, “I have not touched silk or a silk garment softer than the palm of the Prophet
s, nor have I smelt a perfume nicer than the sweat of the Prophet s.” (al-Bukhari and Muslim) And in another narration, he reports: “The Prophet
s had a very fair skin tone and the drops of his sweat shone like pearls.” (Muslim) 95

The Prophets are Law-Givers The Prophets are Allah’s representatives and
ambassadors to humanity. They speak on Allah’s
authority and by His permission. They have the duty of explaining Allah’s laws to their people and showing them how to practice them. No other human being has this power, as every human being is commanded by Allah to follow the Prophets. No one is allowed to reject or change the laws given by the Prophets. The Prophets do not just explain Allah’s laws; they also have the power to give new laws from themselves. For example, Prophet Muhammad s made Madinah a holy city (Haram) like the way Makkah was made a holy city (Haram) by Prophet Ibrahim e (al-Bukhari and Muslim). The Prophet s also made fish lawful (halal) for his Ummah even though it is not sacrificed, and it dies when it is taken out of the water (Ibn Majah). The words and actions of Prophet Muhammad s are known as his ‘Sunnah’. Many of the Islamic laws are based on the Sunnah of the Prophet s. The Qur’an 96

did not explain everything in detail, as it left many things for the Prophet s to explain through his Sunnah. For example, Allah commanded us to pray in the Qur’an, but He did not explain how. The Prophet
s showed his Ummah how to pray, and they learnt to pray by watching him. In this way, the Prophet’s Sunnah is the practical
demonstration of the Qur’an. Just as it is obligatory
to follow the Qur’an, it is also obligatory to follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad s.
Summary The Prophets are special servants of Allah and the most perfect human beings. They are unlike other humans in their inward and outward reality. They have been given superiority by Allah over all of humanity. They are the most honourable and respected among their people and they come from the best families. They also have a special status as law-givers because they can give laws and explain them by the authority of Allah. 97
Lesson 16 The Ahl al-Bayt The Ahl al-Bayt are the blessed family of the Prophet s. The family of the Prophet s include his blessed wives, his pure daughters, his cousin `Ali and his grandsons al-Hasan and al-Husayn.
The Excellence and Virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt Like the Companions, the Ahl al-Bayt are also a source of guidance for the Ummah. Zayd bin Arqam reports that the Prophet s was delivering a sermon one day between Makkah and Madinah. In this sermon, he praised Allah and said, “I am leaving behind you two weighty things. The first of them is the Book of Allah (the Qur’an)… (and the second of them is) the people of my household. I remind you of my family. I remind you of my

family. I remind you of my family.” (Muslim) In another hadith, according to Jabir bin `Abd Allah, the Prophet s said, “O people! I am leaving behind something if you follow them, you will never be led astray: The Book of Allah and my household.” (atTirmidhi) Just as it is necessary to respect the Companions of the Prophet s and to speak well of them, we must also respect the holy family of the Prophet s. In fact, it is necessary to love them and honour them without any exception. Ibn `Abbas relates that the Prophet s said, “Love me for the sake of Allah’s love and love my family for the sake of my love.” (at-Tirmidhi)
