The report will provide an overview of the assignments completed and lessons learnt, as well as reflecting my personal observations and experiences of the working environment. The Internship Report is also a requirement for Industrial Placement program in semester six, Diploma in Graphic Design in Limkokwing University. It is hoped that this report will help the university to improve the internship programs.

The ta
As a graphic intern, I took care of most of the designs for events, products, gifts and many others, for BizzyBody and FacialFirst’s outlets in Wyann International.
the Complimentary Card to put onto the bed inside the treatment rooms as well as some designs to be put on the lockers where customers kept their belongings.
In the beginning of my internship training, I have helped out the company to prepare the Love Your Burst event. Although it did not include any designing task, it was something to prepare me in my very first job.
Other than that, the company gives out gifts called The Code of Honour. It is for the staff and the outlets that have perform well in the previous month. I usually have to come out with an idea, making use of the existing/remain resources to create a gift with the company looks.
This biggest task I got in this training progress was the preparation for most of the designs in Ambassador Search Top 100 Finalist event 2012/2013. I designed the invitation cards, the number stickers for the contestants to wear in the event, the advertisement stickers for the staff, the money vouchers for every contestant, the judges’ sign, the photography, the registration counter sign and so on. After that event, I got to prepare for the continuing event which was the Ambassador Search Top 50 Finalist, where the letters to inform the contestants, telling them if they are in or not, have to be designed and the testimonial forms for the 50 finalists needed to be done as well. BizzyBody has its monthly design schedule, which was in my responsibility. Every month, I will design the Wyann Newsletter, informing the staff what is going to happen that month, the event dates and the training timetable. I was also in charge of the campaign designs. Once every month, I need to redesign Summary of the Internship
Apart from the event designs and the monthly designs, I was given design jobs whenever there was anything needed. I got to design and animate the internet ad in different sizes. The counter calendar, with the purpose of letting the customers see the available dates to book their treatments, was also designed by me. When the company was concerning about the therapist and beautician’s qualities, they asked me to design the therapist/beautician comment form as well as the clipboards. For the AcuClear Contest inside the company between the therapists, I designed the Contest Poster together with the Testimonial form. I also designed the toiletries label featuring free samples inside the washroom of the outlets and the quotations in the meeting room. Of course, I did help my colleagues with things going on here and there, but the tasks were not that important and I do not think they are worth mentioning as a task of my internship training. 27

Summary of the Internship
Aspects of my training experiences Li Hua, as my supervisor, has helped me a lot during my internship training progress. Most of the projects that she gave to me are really interesting and they are very different from each other. They require different skills, different design styles and different uses in different times. That allowed me to learn a lot of new things and I never got bored designing them.
machine in the office is a very old machine. At times, the prints would get stuck many times inside the machine without any special reason, and Miin was the one taught me how to deal with the printer.
Most of the time when I am having trouble with the designs and Li Hua was not there, Olyvia, the other designer, would help me check out the work to see if there is anything wrong, and I would do the same for her when she needed me as well.
Inside the marketing office, only designers have a Mac in front of them. Although Mac is known as a best platform for designers for its quality in output result, faster speed for graphic tools and perfect-end printing, the Macs in this office are very old and they needed to be updated. The design programs installed in the Macs are the old version back in 2007, and for designers we believe that we should always update the programs to the newest to catch up with the speed of changes in designs and tools. Olyvia tried to install the 2012 version and was unable to as the Mac also needed to be updated. It was a bit hard to get used to the old programs and we definitely got slowed down as there were not enough tools.
The designing works that me and Olyvia had to do usually have reasonable deadlines, where we could be relaxed and finish all the work together. Sometimes, Li Hua would dash into the office in the morning, gives us a task that requires designing, printing and finishing up in a large amount and ask us to finish all of them in a few hours. It was, most of the time, very rushed, but after Olyvia and I have done the job, we just found it ridiculous and laughed together on how we acted during the whole progress of panicking mixed with designing.
Besides that, I had another problem regarding resources needed for designing. It will always be faster and easier for anybody, when asked to design following an existing concept and style, to have the existing design’s working file to be able to keep the consistency. For many times, I did not get the design file to start with because no one had it for some reasons. That means I had to start all over again from the beginning, and it was really time-consuming. Luckily, the deadlines were pretty far away when things like that happened.
Li Hua is a very busy person, she tends to travel to different outlets for her other jobs, so it was really hard to get a comment directly from her. But when she was at the Headquarters, she gave me lots of support and useful tips on how I should design.
Other than Olyvia, Miin was a great supporter when it comes to printing. The printing
Summary of the Internship
29
Was I prepared enough? When I started out, I did not know what I needed to do other than preparing my portfolio, my curriculum vitae and finding some intern position available in design industry on the internet. I had troubles when it got to the interview section as I had neither experience nor knowledge in what I was going to be asked and how I needed to present myself. I did research and checked on what to do through the internet just a few days before my first interview. I did mess a few things up since I was really nervous because it was my first time, and I do not think that I was professional enough. During my experience at the internship training, I realized that the real life industry design process and its requirements are almost the same as what I have experienced during my 5 semesters at Limkokwing University. Of course, the basic knowledge in design will appear everywhere as long as it related. Thankfully, I was prepared for designing during the first 2 semesters in the university. I also did not have any problems with using designing programs except for the fact that the programs in the company were a bit old. I felt lucky that I can actually draw decently, thanks to my Illustration classes back then. I was once asked to draw out this idea for Marcus (who is not a designer) so that he can present his decoration idea to the higher boss. It would have been really embarrassing if I was a designer and I could not draw.
30
I did some packaging designs during the internship program, and they required not just designing skills but imaginations as well as DIY skills. During the studying progress in Limkokwing, it was always a bonus mark for crafty designs as they require more effort and time. I had gone through all that to maintain a high CGPA therefore I am very used to designing a DIY packaging. Also, I have managed to successfully develop the event designs as well as the company’s monthly advertisement campaigns thanks to the experiences I have gained through various assignments in the university. However, I had some difficulties when I needed to animate an internet ad. Although I have learnt how to use Adobe Flash and how to apply the knowledge in the university, I had never known about how a normal ad has a restriction on its size and what I have to be concerned about when there is such problem. In addition, I got problems when it got to typography. I realized that my choices of font and its placement were not good enough as I was not familiar with this topic. It was also because there were no classes that delve deeper into this subject in the diploma program in the university. Overall, I think my coursework has prepared most of the knowledge I needed for the internship training program. Of course it has minor holes here and there as I mentioned but there were no major problems. I hope my fellow juniors would able to be better prepared than me, especially for their interviews. Summary of the Internship
do What additional skills
I need?
Followed by the problems I had during my internship training, I think I should learn some additional skills before graduation so that I would not have that much of trouble later on. Typography is a must for me to learn because it is known as an art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. Designing is all about communicating and giving out messages through your artwork. Therefore, if the type is not beautifully designed, the overall artwork could be ruined and I need to learn how to avoid that from happen. I also need to study about other design programs, such as Dreamweaver, Aftereffect and Fireworks. It is always a good thing to know your available tools because you will never know when it comes in handy. With those tools, I would be able to start on other types of design without much difficulty in the beginning. Nowadays, websites are an interactive platform that is used for receiving and providing information. According to the researchers, within a few seconds web users develop their first impressions regarding the webpage designs. Therefore web designing knowledge would come to be very useful for me in the future, especially since I am majoring in Multimedia. Last but not least, I think Social Media Marketing skills will be very helpful for any new designers out there. This skill helps an individual promote themselves, their products and services in the market. By knowing some of the art and science in marketing, it would be easier for you to start in the industry, consider how many designers out there are trying to get attention, build their own brand, sell products and bring repetitive business.
Summary of the Internship
31
32
What strength do I possess?
1.
Technical skills. After working in BizzyBody, I realized that I hold a great technical skill. My speed in making the design is considered as fast, all I need is to understand the main concept and idea before get started. I am also able to see tiny technical mistakes in a second which Olyvia, the other designer, appreciates. Other than that I am a quick learner therefore I had no trouble getting used to the new tools.
2.
Open-minded. I am an open-minded person. I am always open to suggestions and criticisms from everybody including my colleagues who are not designers in the office. Li Hua likes how I am willing to make changes and improvement for my designs to make them look the best they could.
3.
Hardworking. My willingness to work overtime often impresses Li Hua. During the training progress, I was willing to go the extra mile and put in extra time to finish the work. Very often I arrived at the office earlier than I am supposed to and go back home 2 or 3 hours after my working hours. To me it was more like a responsibility to finish my assignments on time with a good quality no matter what it takes.
What are my weaknesses?
1.
No typography skill. Although I was able to design and execute my assignments, my typography in the designs was not exactly fulfilling. My choices of font and placement were off and it would be too much for Li Hua to actually teach me about that matter. I wish I got to learn about typography like degree students in Limkokwing University.
2.
Not so impulsive or adventurous. Often when I was given a designing task, my designs tend to be a common design that has been used everywhere. Although it is good in a way that it is safe to use and there will be a lot of references for similar designs but as a designer, I should be more adventurous and look for something more unique and creative.
3.
Easily get panicked during a crisis. Other than the 2 weaknesses I have listed above, I also easily panic during a crisis, such as having very close deadlines, being rushed or having last minute problems that needed to be fixed quickly. I was told by my colleagues that if I were to calm down, I could be much more efficient and much faster. Summary of the Internship
What have I learnt about myself Generally, I am a silent person and I usually would not start a conversation with anyone I am not close with. Therefore if I was standing in a middle of a group where I know no one and no one talks to me, I would not say a word. Things changed when I worked in BizzyBody. My colleagues were different from everybody I know. They are very friendly and supportive. Their sincerity could make you feel at ease as if you were home and they are your family. I have never felt left out there. As a family, my office often celebrates one’s birthday. A small cake, a song and a picture could make somebody’s special day much more special. Other than that, my colleges would have a dinner all together when somebody is leaving the company. Before I came back to school, I also received the same treatment. Other than special occasions, we sometimes went out just to get some ice cream or milk teas to cool the day down, especially those days where everybody was busy and stressful. In the marketing office, everybody is allowed to open music on their computers if they want. When one does so, the other people would automatically not open their music because a song is always better playing alone than 2 or more songs playing at a time. The person who opened music also respect the other people enough to lower down the volume, enough to be background music but not disturbing anyone. I really like how everybody respects each other in such a way. Summary of the Internship
and others?
Working as a team with Olyvia, we often talk and laugh at each other jokes. One of my colleges told me that when both of us were not there (we went for school registration), the office had no more laughter and it felt so silent for her. When she told me that, I was touched as my existence was important in a way, and I think that goes for everybody else that works there. Olyvia and Li Hua, who I worked the most closely with, were very innovative. They openly express their thoughts and feelings toward a design, which helped me a lot in improving my own designs. Both of them have much interest toward designing, make them fun to talk with and share about the same topic. Li Hua is really clear in the priority of what should be done, for example she would consider the solutions for the problems first before actually blaming anyone, and I think she would be a great leader, wherever she goes. After my internship training, I found out more about myself in terms of strength and weaknesses. I realized that I am not a bad designer, but I could be better and I still have a lot more to learn. Working in BizzyBody also let me realized that I could never get away from designing, it is in my heart and my body, and I could really spend my entire life devoting in this field.

- It is much quicker to use cooking oil to clean up the remaining glue than nail polish.
Only when there were 2 bottle left, Li Hua came to us with cooking oil.

I
t has been a really fulfilling internship experience here at BizzyBody. I appreciate the way I was guided throughout the training by my supervisor Wong Li Hua. Not only I have gained practical knowledge and real-life experience in the designing field, I have also managed to develop relationships with my colleagues and polished my social skills. Besides, a lot of independence was given to me despite the fact that I was only an intern. I believe that the knowledge and experience gained through this internship would come in handy and be able to put to good use upon my graduation, as it has opened up another possible career route for me.
