MINIM±L MAGAZINE

N째1

For me, minimalism is about focusing on the fewest details and eliminating any unnecessary components. Minimalism is often mistaken for the simple-minded, however a minimalist lifestyle is a way to escape the excesses of the world around us - the excesses of consumerism, material possessions, clutter, having too much to do, too much debt or too many distractions. Minimalism is a way of avoiding the non-essential in order to focus on what is truly important; what gives our lives meaning; what gives us joy and value. By focusing on these few details and acquiring a minimalist approach, you are more likely to be a clear-minded, focused and calm individual.

MinimÂąl magazine brings you aspects of contemporary culture, fashion, art and design with a bi-annual publication. Volume No°1 models women’s fashion with features from a range of inspiring and up-coming designers and photographers from across the world who are emerging into the creative industries. We also bring you features of global street style from some of our favourite minimalist bloggers. This issue has been created for the fashion and style enthusiasts, to inspire and broaden your mind.

Minimalism also refers to a very particular aesthetic, in terms of design and fashion, minimalists favour neutral colour palettes and basic apparel and interiors. A minimalist will choose to invest in life-time, luxury pieces and try to avoid over-consumption.

Oh Seven Days is a contemporary womenswear label embodying opulent simplicity and sports luxury. Each piece is created to become a building block within a classic, chic, and tailored wardrobe. The Istanbul-based label was founded by Canadian-born, Australian-bred designer Megan Mummery, following her relocation to Turkey in 2013. The flurry of the city begged for a simplified yet sophisticated wardrobe, ideal for a lifestyle on the move. The design aesthetic is a mixture of Australian ease, European classicality and eastern texture. Using plush fabrics and cool modern silhouettes, each piece has both intricacy and clarity. The name Oh Seven Days comes from the Turkish word seven, meaning ‘one who loves’.

Megan Mummery launched her eponymous womenswear label ‘Oh 7 Days’ in 2013. Designed with minimalism at its core and contemporary cuts in mind, the designer warmly welcomes this preview of her fourth collection for AW15. Elin, meaning ‘your hand’ in Turkish, suitably describes the intricate, hand-made feel of the AW15 collection. With dresses made from hand-marbled crepe and loomwoven sleeveless coats, the collection is rooted in tradition despite its seemingly modern aesthetic. AW15 maintains the brand’s signature sport-luxe aesthetic with fleece sweatshirts, oversized shirt dresses, and pleated wide leg trousers. This season we see new exciting updates to the range with a pop of teal green, the line incorporated colour whilst maintaining its trademark minimalist look. We see soft tailored pieces juxtaposed with sports inspired sweat shirts, matching separates for a more feminine look, and effortless overcoats to complete aesthetic of the range.

Black and white is often considered as boring and dull while for many it is clean, crisp and a bold statement. Black and white is simple and also considered timeless, however the problem is simple does not necessarily mean easy as a monochrome palette requires a lot of creativity and thought. The key to monochrome is to style it up, but not too much and not too little. Black and white are the perfect harmony and contrast, however with the incorrect styling it can surprisingly go wrong. Too many prints or textures can make it look untidy however a few staple accessories, whether it be for your wardrobe or for your home decor, can make it look sophisticated and classy. Choosing black and white also eliminates the time wasted on co-ordinating colours when you buy new things and will simplify your choices when shopping. Only having one colour of shoes would save you a fortune on its own. Black and white does not have to be dull, the benefit of going colourless is that you can dress and style it with any choice of texture, print, material or accent of colour as you like. Whilst black and white home interiors will always remain contemporary and modern, you can always update each room by adding small pops of colour with accessories and small furnishings. Equivalent to your home, your minimalist black and white wardrobe can be accessorised to create your own personal style. A small but sufficient selection of jewellery, handbags, scarves and shoes can change up an outfit entirely whilst keeping your look refreshed.

Grey, being neither black nor white, is the transition between two non-colours. The closer grey gets to black, the more dramatic and mysterious it becomes. On the other hand, the closer it gets to silver or white, the more illuminating and lively it becomes. Grey is considered an unemotional colour, it is detached, neutral and indecisive. But it is also solid and stable, creating a sense of calm and composure. Grey can reflect maturity, professionalism and intelligence however on the contrary it is associated with being un-emotional, lifeless and dull. Grey clothes are to be worn with other neutral colours such as more grey or black and white. Do not detract from the grey by wearing a bright jacket or a colourful, bold necklace. Grey should not be treated as workwear you are trying to liven up: it is a chic shade to be worn with pride. Avoid looking dull with the correct styling and by accessorising your grey outfits with minimal pieces of jewellery only.

There is a fine art to wearing simple clothes and making them look as if you have dressed with deliberate understatement rather than a lack of imagination. You need to add an element of emphasis. So if you are wearing a pair of denim jeans, try an acid wash or some which are ripped at the knee. Or if you are wearing a simple coat, throw it over your shoulders like a cape. Also changing from a pair of pumps to a pair of simple black stilettos can revive your outfit entirely. Styling a simple wardrobe requires awareness of presentation and quality: stylish people who have a simple uniform update it frequently and try new combinations to keep things fresh.

A capsule wardrobe provides more time, more money and more energy for the things in life that really matter. A capsule wardrobe, otherwise known as a wardrobe with approximately thirty items or less, will eliminate your morning stress of finding something to wear every day. A few versatile but staple pieces will not only save you money, but will also leave you with fewer choices resulting in less time wasted and more time and money. Many people are sceptical about this approach and wonder why anyone would choose to wear the same or similar outfit every day, however by choosing interchangeable items and with the correct styling you can create a new look for each and every occasion. Our society has an obsession with fast-paced fashion trends however those who adopt minimalist principles in their wardrobe choices are discovering more productivity, less stress, less distraction, less expense, and more peace. Most of our wardrobes are filled with garments and shoes we have purchased but never or hardly worn. By living with a minimalist wardrobe you are adopting an iconic and personal uniform and can eliminate the expense and waste of trial-and-error clothing purchases. Once you have found your personal style or essentially a ‘uniform’ for yourself, you can begin to minimise your wardrobe and start experiencing less worry and stress over your appearance. A capsule wardrobe will influence you to stay true to yourself and also encourage you to feel comfortable in your surroundings opposed to following the fad fashion movements that seem to result in our closets overflowing with short-term, mediocre items that are never worn.

Tourism is used as an escapism from people’s day-to-day lives. However holidays should be closer associated with exploring destinations of interest and the world outside of the one you know and live in. For the best experience, one should choose a holiday with more freedom and culture opposed to opting for a sub-standard, all inclusive, packaged holiday. Travelling should give you an educated perspective of the exotic cultures we are alienated to and should teach you the way that you look at the world and yourself. Travelling encourages you to try new things out of your comfort zone, experience different foods, interact with people from different cultures and possibly even learn a new language. Holidays not only allow you to experience different cultures and climates but they will provide you with incredible memories and also make you appreciate your life back home when you return to your reality. When booking your next holiday, consider the amount of culture and the experiences you will encounter in your choice of destination.

naturalism #134

noun

noun: naturalism 1. the philosophical belief that everything arises from natural properties and causes, and supernatural or spiritual explanations are excluded or discounted. 2. adherence or attachment to what is natural.

#140

‘Naturalism’ was chosen for the name of this series of images due to the term’s expansive definitions and explanations. The female models in this fashion and beauty editorial have adopted the philosophical belief that everything arises from natural properties and causes. Commercial Photography student Rosie Wood integrated the theme of naturalism through the application of ecological products, specifically within the make-up and styling. Using Liz Earle cosmetics throughout the shoot, a British beauty brand that uses sustainable, fairly traded ingredients was the first step in this process, whilst the styling consisted of casual lingerie made from eco-friendly material. ‘Barely there’ make-up and styling was used to enhance the models’ natural features whilst they posed in a state of tranquillity accompanied by pots of vibrant green, tropical plants.

SS15 is radical and imaginative, soft and structured, with the designer’s trademark futuristic perspex and resin columns seen in a new, visionary light of unpredictable colours, shapes and forms. Lily has looked to a range of fantastical sources for inspiration this season, including Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill - the architect’s surreal structured buildings worked as an inspiration for many of Lily’s pieces this season inspiring solid geometric colour block forms. Lily also took inspiration from the 1920’s looking at creamy coloured Art Deco film sets and nostalgic cinema lobbies to evoke memories of velvety hues, block shapes and contrasting smooth curves. Lily also looked at a more unexpected source for SS15, geometric sand sculptures, relating to soft tactile shapes with a malleable yet structured aesthetic. All of these diverse inspirations are brought together to form a collection that is captivating and totally unique. Lily’s hand dyed columns have been updated with new, innovative colour ways this season including: soft lilac, bold royal blue, powdery blue, deep amaranthine and soft pastel shades mimicking art deco cinema lobbies. We also see an injection of bright green accents with contrasting monochrome panels to create bold lines that are nostalgic yet cutting edge. These shapes come to play with luxurious materials such as white sapphires to create a modernistic range that is unforeseen and unique. Lily has introduced more rose gold throughout the collection offering a decadent edge to the range. We also see a pioneering hexagonal gold block covered in white sapphire pavé a luxury addition to the range, as well as disc shaped pendants and pieces with cutting edge tiered ends. The range this season is diverse, with a considered collection of bracelets, bangles, earrings and rings, as well as Lily’s trademark column pendants in a range of shapes and sizes, from minuscule to robust, creating a collection that is assorted yet completely wearable.
