BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE, 2022 KOREA UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

Starting from the elements that compose the spaces, focusing on them, researching how to use them in other ways and interpreting. Establishing the newly defined world, showing the structural logic intuitionally, and filling the inside with simple components. Considering how to make the building effect surrounding contexts, community as an object standing at the site, as a gesture delivering messages.

1. Memorial and Cultural Centre for Victims of Industrial Accidents Disclosing the Suppressed Death

Thesis Project, Design Studio VII, 2021-1, GRAND PRIZE Location : Mapo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea Type : Renovation, Landscape Design Instructor : Chungyeon Won, Sungkyu Hong

The city where we are facing today is untruth. The untruth of a city that represents only a corporeal development eliminates the truth about the existence-laborers who are doing self-understanding, and their death and sacrifices. Describing the stories about laborers through erasing the monuments which show only visualized advances and exposing the raw and pure structures with removing the envelopes materialized domination of capitals are expressing of the wills that disclosing the truth and revise the wrong formation of relationships. Seoul Power Plant(Danginri Power Plant) is chosen as the most radical place in Seoul to declare the wills, and by stopping the generation, it puts down the representation of developments which was explained as “Miracle of Hangang”, at the same time, it would be an instrument that helps Da-sein who are living in the city to make recovered self-understanding. To achieve this purpose, elements that came from the original power plant, surrounding urban contexts, new constructions, sequences, programs are considered actively. Finally, this project hopes to visitors who experience the spaces that contain many instruments to be new existences after coming back to the city.

History of Seoul Power Plant and neighborhood Seoul Power Plant(Danginri Power Station) was constructed and started its first electricity generation at 1930. To support and transport the materials for power plant, Danginri Line was constructed. After the 1st generator was completed, 4 more generator was constructed in sequence (2 at 1936, 3 at 1956, 4 at 1971, 5 at 1969).

Original Building Study : Isometric Perspective View

Original Building Study : Interior and Exterior View

No. 4 and 5 generator have almost the same composition and elements. Both have chimney, structure for boiler, turbine room. In front of the no.5 generator, there is a water tank which is not used today. The difference of the generator is the location of the boiler structure; boiler structure of no.4 is on the roof of the building, that of no.5 is in front of the building.

Site Map and Urban Contexts Surrounded by residential area and Hangang, Seoul Power Plant has many visual communications and connectionss with many other contexts nearby. New phase of the building after renovation can act as a gesture or an objet indicating the relationships between people who are living in the city and laborers who faced death.

Topic : Remained History of Laborer "The world" was made by thousands of laborer's sacrifices and death. The structures that consist of the power station show the materialized histories about the laborers with transparent envelope, and new buildings surrounding neighborhood are spatial equipment that help the recovered selfunderstandings through the formation of relationships with the unveiled truth.

Exhibition 1 Reconstitution of Histories

Exhibition 2 Recognizing the Structure

Memorial Zone Generalization of Death

Each chambers show the histories about industrial accidents in sequence through exhibition; sculptures, installation, arts, etc. Visitors experience the space and remind themselves about the historical and social situation related to the topics

Dark and uncomfortable atmosphere of the inner space is metaphor of the causes that brought the death of laborers. The movable machine on the roof shows the pictures of the workspaces. People recognize the indirect reality of the structure (either physical or superficial) through experiencing the space.

Objects that once belonged to victims are stacked anonymously. Visitors identify laborers with themselves through seeing the objects. It is some kind of memorialization. If the shelves are full, the objects would be moved to Open Archive.

Exhibition 3 Completed History

Cultural Centre Remembering History

Open Archive Archived Recordings

The cleanest spaces are the finale of the sequence. Only a few objects are there to mark it. Visitors come back to the city through the expression of "Death" by the most regular composition.

People who are living think what they can do, such as revision of the unreasonable conditions or remembering the accidents and events. Cultural Centre is the space for supporting them. The space of creation is not shown well, we can see only the results displayed outside.

Histories would be archived. Similar to a library, visitors can read the documents or materials such as books, multimedias, etc, about the conditions of laborers or movement to overcome the situations.

2. Anam Topo House Topographic Planet Academic Project, Design Studio I, 2015-1 Location : Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea Type : House Instructor : Santiago Porras Alvarez

House for Gertrude Comfort Morrow. Gertrude Comfort Morrow, who is one of the first American architects, in which this site shares one point; Unexposed Characteristics. Women architects are always hidden or expelled from the mainstream due to discrimination by male architects. Gertrude Comfort Morrow was also not the exception. The original landscape of the Anam dong is not like the view of today. The objects from the city cover all the ground, and the Sense of Place is disappeared. Therefore, the shape and architectural language of the project have a purpose to expose these two things: The tectonical structure and transparent envelope, shape that follows the topography shows the suppressed identity of the Gertrude Comfort Morrow as the architects finally being free, and the original characteristic of the topography.

Site : Anam Dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea The site is located on anam dong which has dynamic topograpic. Existing Contexts had been shaped not regarded the differences of heights, and topo. Therefore, the main considerations of this projects is interpreting the topo and revealing the characteristic of the site.

Concept : Revealing the Topogrphic and Spaces Skimming the original contexts that cover pure topography. Arranging the new spaces according to the revealed topo. Making the spaces transparent to declare the releasing from the pressure to hide the identity as the (woman) architects. Locating the studio space higher than other spaces to show the expression.

3. Max Bill Gallery Reinterpreted Composition Academic Project, Design Studio II, 2015-2 Location : Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea Type : Gallery, House Instructor : Santiago Porras Alvarez

Gallery for Max Bill Attempting to export elements and languages that can be discovered in the artist, and composing with the interpretion of that: Max Bill, who did much research on geometry, proportions, compositions, etc, tried to reflect his analysis in his paintings. The empty space occured by overlapping two surfaces, and symmetrical shape like square, circle, are the expression of the desires. In three dimensional space, this elements reproduced into void that comes from the empty spaces in his paintings, and the facade that has the similar principles of his arts.

Graphic Study : Artworks of Max Bill Study focus on artworks of Max Bill which have a diamond shape. Based on this symmetrical frame, some elements are overlapped. The parts where the elements are overlapped responsed in various ways: being filled with other colors, or being emptied.

Site : Anam Dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea Located in front of Seongbuk River, the site is next to main road Seongbuk river and sidewalks have many trees that make the special nature of the neighborhood. The view blocked by the trees make the site seem like it is a hidden place.

4. Anam Residential Building A Making a New One from the Past Academic Project, Design Studio IV, 2017-2 Location : Anam Dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea Type : Residential Building, Urban Design Instructor : Fabio Dacarro, Ryul Song

The leader of this era must be the youth. This project is residential proposal for students of Korea University. Containing students facilities related to student autonomy like clubroom, office and conference place for student associations. These attempt is to overwhelming the disconnected status between Anam Dong and Korea University, and carving new accumulations from the deep physical and mental relationship in this town. The building which has these purposes is like a ship sailing in the town. The spirit of the space would spread out through the time, and the starting point is the youth and their activities; student autonomy.

Korea University

Anam Dong

Halted Accumulation Subject drive of collectives and culture were the temporary "visitors", outnumbering the actual residents of Anam-Dong, the Korea University Students. However, Korea University has encroached all contents like drinking booth, activity spaces, plaza, and so on. "The visitors" don't have to walk around the town due to this condition.

Inserting Elements in Stopped Time A change must occur in order to develop a more lively society. Change begins from the past. in other words, something new inserted deeply in the past accumulations would affect surrounding objects. New elements must have contrast and be different from the past things.

5. Songhyeon Cultural Centre Blurring the Scene Jongno Urban Design Competition, 2020 Location : Songhyeon-Dong, Jongno-Gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea Type : Community Centre Individual Participation

Interpretation of the History Songhyeon Site which is empty now, has complicated history related to various owners; government, company, and so on. History of the Songhyeon Site about the owner fianlly stopped. The fields densely covered with grass reflects this status. Now, this proposal suggests the recovery of nature and characteristic of the site, and return to people not just the power but citizens. To achieve these purposes, slow recovery strategies are used; reflecting imperfect scenes and constructing with simplifed elements of traditional architecture of Korea. Through these methods, people are reminded the original characteristics and histories not in directly, but through implication.

Site : Songhyeon Dong, Seoul, Republic of Korea The site is surrounded by many historical places. Therefore, the motive of composition and construction logic of the project and its spaces is came from this kinds of remains. Visual communication with Bukak Mountain has new position on the project; not directly viewed, but reflected on mirror and blurred. Through these methods, this project is located on the boundary between the past and the present

Concept Diagram Motive from the elements that consists the surrounding context Bukak Mountain is the visual destination of the circulation. Construction logics and space atmosphere of the buildings are derived from the corridor and pavilion from Korean traditional architecture.

According to the development of technology, the media for information storage was segmented in various ways. Especially, the development of internet led to the rapid supply of e-books. As a result, original library as a physical space lost its status. Therefore, the question "what is the role of library in the future?" should be necessary. If the past library is "standing information well", the library in the future should be "sea of circulated information". If the function of original library was limited to accumulating the information(mainly book type), the coming library should have roles delivering the information which make people create new value(in various ways). The new information as resultants would be accumulated in the library again, and the invental loop delivered to the next generation.

7. 家具-家口 Furniture-Family Chairs with the Value of Community "Kengo Kuma & Higashikawa" KAGU Design Competition, 2021 Type : Furniture Design Team Work as a Member (Team Member : Jiwoo Lee, Minhyeon Kang)

家具, which means furniture in Japanese, has the similar sound as 家口, which means family in Japanese. Today the value of family and community is fading as fewer people know the construction principles of furnitures. This chair - for sitting implies a paradox that one cannot sit alone. This is an attempt to arouse nostalgia for the society that is living together and discussing the current state of individualism.
