The World Cadet Games of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) represents a mega sports event on an international scale that compiles multiples sports and it’s organized every four years, open to cadets of the Military Academies that belong to the Army, Navy and Aviation forces. The CISM is a nonprofit association which was established in Belgium and it´s represented by its president, Colonel Camerunés Hamad Kalkaba Malboum. The main purpose of the games is to contribute to achieve World Peace by assembling the Army Forces of several countries through sports. Bravery, audacity, political intuition and vision of the future are the qualities that inspired the creation of this nonpolitical association, right after World War II ended. Values such as solidarity, development, humanitarian assistance and world peace are the principles that motivate the CISM and its associates. The number of countries which are active members of CISM is currently 133. From that number 14 belong to America, Ecuador being one of them. The CISM, on every edition of the World Cadet Games, offers to all participants the possibility to exchange the different aspect of the military training, learn the educational programs that other military academies offer and become better cadets, soldiers and the military leaders of tomorrow.

World Cadet Games – Ecuador 2014
How did Ecuador become the host of this edition?
One of the main reasons that the General Assembly of the International Military Sports Council considered was the successful organization of the XX South American Championship of Cadets, which took place on September 2010 and was held in the Military Academy, “Eloy Alfaro”, located in Quito. This allowed the assembly, organized on Seul-Korea, to recognize Ecuador’s potential as a host of the Second World Cadet Games that will take place in the cities of Quito and Salinas from August 30th until September 5th of 2014. The purpose of this edition of the World Cadet Games is to promote socio cultural exchange between nations. In this context, it is also an opportunity to promote the different human virtues held by our cadets, such as discipline, understanding, tolerance and solidarity. We believe these qualities are pillars that will contribute to accomplish cooperation between nations and establish world peace. Hence, the slogan for this competition is “World and Peace for the World”. In order to organize this years’ games, Ecuador created the CADOC (Organizing Committee of the World Cadet Games “Ecuador 2014”) , which is responsible of dealing with planning, organizing and execution of the events. The CADOC works in coordination with the CISM WCG CC to establish a solidarity program in order to guarantee the participation of most members of the CISM.

Military Pentathlon In 1946, Captain Henri Debrus, a French officer, thought of organizing a sport championship within the Army. During this event, he centered in technical aspects of the traditional physical training offered in the army, which, by then, was practiced throughout the aviation units in Holland. After the release of a parachute over the designated area, the paratroopers had to trek through 20 km from the landing point, passing a series obstacles in their way (rivers, etc.) and executing combat operations on their way (firing with low range gun and handling grenades). Captain Debrus modified the competition and, after an analysis, the military authorities approved said changes. Since then the Military Pentathlon has been practiced in most countries worldwide. Military Pentathlon, in Ecuador, started officially in 1973 when Brigade No. 13 “Pichincha” organized an open tournament, where the only participants were the teams that belong to the different units within the Brigade as well as a squad from the Navy’s Infantry. Nowadays Ecuador is considered one of the four top teams in the world, right after China, Russia and Brazil. The Ecuadorian team is in constant training, aiming to reach the highest scores on each championship.

Volleyball According to the regulations instituted by the International Military Sports Council CISM, for this sport was considered the participation of only eight teams, male and female, including the Ecuadorian commission. Volleyball represents a game where two teams compete in a court divided in half by a one meter wide net. The purpose of the game is to throw the ball above the net, making it fall on the adversary’s side of the court while trying not to let the ball fall inside one’s own side. The ball can be thrown with any part of the body, although the most common way is to use the upper body parts, especially the hands. The hit must be clean, meaning that the ball cannot be held, retained or pushed. Another important rule in volleyball establishes that each team can touch the ball a maximum of three times before throwing it to the other side of the court and a player cannot touch the ball twice in a row.

Natación Swimming started as a sport in the beginnings of the XIX century in Great Britain, when London’s National Swimming Society was created, in 1837. Swimming became one of the Olympics’ sports on Athens, in 1896 for men and 1912 for women. Swim Styles: • Free Style, where the competitors can pick whichever swim stroke they prefer. The only rules applied to this style are that at the start of the test the swimmer must begin on the starting lane. After the beginning and end of each length the competitor can be submerged for no more than 15 meters. • Butterfly Style: This swim stroke requires more strength and is the one that consumes most energy. The competitions are held on 15m, 100m and 200m distances. • Breaststroke: Is the slowest style in swim competitions. The events are held on distances of 50m, 100m and 200m. • Backstroke: This swimming style is similar to an upside down front crawl, with the difference that the elbows remain stretched – the competitors move their arms back above their shoulders and their hand, once submerged, pushes water propelling the swimmer. • Relay: where different competitors swim consecutively. These competitions take place in distance of 4x50m free, 4x100m free and 4x200 free. • Individual Medley: where a single competitor swimming equal distances of four different strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl, in that order. These competitions are held in distances of 50 and 100m only. • Mixed Medley: When four different swimmers in one relay competition, each swim one of the four strokes in the following order: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and front crawl, in that order. The competition is held in distances of 4x50m and 4x100m.

Orienteering During the first half of the XX century, orienteering was considered a Scandinavian sport. Nowadays is one of the most recent military sports, practiced all around the globe. Ecuador’s national orienteering team is composed by members of the three army branches, who compete on an international scale. Orienteering is a sport in which the competitor must find certain amount of control points, from 20 to 30, marked on the land on the minimum amount of time, with the help of a map and a compass. This competition demands a high level of training, a perfect knowledge on how to navigate with a map and the capability to make fast decisions. The male orienteering team consists of six members while the female has four cadets. Besides the long and medium distance races, there is a relay test where three representatives of each team (female and male) must complete different routes. The person who finds all the control points in the least time possible will be declared the winner. The II World Cadet Games will take place in the Santa Elena Province where the competitions will take place during four days with a reconnaissance test, two medium and a large range fields and a relay test.

Shooting Sport Target shooting, as a sport, is as old as guns themselves –which amounts for around 500 years. This sport originated in Europe, as a mandatory complement in the war gun training. When there were no armed conflicts, the gunmen would constantly train with their weapons in order to achieve speed and accuracy – both important qualities needed during combat. The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) was created in 1907 on Zurich Switzerland by eight different associations. The ISSF current president, since 1980, is Olegario Vázquez Raña, from Mexico. On the same year the Federation’s headquarter moved to Munich (Germany). There are 145 national federations which are currently affiliated to it. There are a wide range of fire weapons. Some are used on the Olympics while others are mostly used during the Nation Community Games. In fact, Bullseye pistol competition was one of the inauguration sports during the Olympics in 1896. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who is considered as the father of the Modern Olympics, was France’s National Bullseye Champion and included this sport in the Olympics program, where it has been a part of ever since.

Athletics Athletics is a collection of sporting events that involve running, jumping, throwing, combine races and trotting. It represents the art of surpassing other competitor’s performance in the fields of speed, resistance, distance or height. The amount of competitions, individual or grouped, has varied through time. Athletics is one of the few sports that are practiced worldwide, in competitions of all levels. The simplicity of the sport, as well as the need of little to no equipment to practice it, are some of the reasons of its success. The first glimpses of the athletic competitions go as back as ancient civilizations. This sport discipline has developed though centuries, from the first competitions to its proper regulation.
