Top Military Representatives Meet in Brussels (January 23) Chief of the General Staffs and Defence Staffs from NATO and Partner countries met on 22 – 23 January in NATO Headquarters in Brussels to negotiate the topical issues. The top military representatives addressed the issues of the ongoing NATO-led operations – ISAF and KFOR, and discussed some other issues like the planned NATO summit, transformation of the Alliance or cooperation with Partner countries. As for ISAF, they focused on the current state and on creating suitable conditions and defining prerequisites for continuing engagement of NATO in Afghanistan within the new mission after 2014. As for KFOR, they considered all the conditions and prerequisites for identifying possibilities of a further course of development of the operation. With a view to preparations for the NATO summit to be held in autumn 2014, the participants raised the issues that will require a focused attention of political leaders. The delegation of the AF SR was led by Major General Miroslav Kocian, the Military Representative of the AF SR to the NATO Military Committee. ● The Ministry of Defence of the SR presented children from the elementary schools and kindergartens in Bratislava with gifts from Slovak soldiers serving in Afghanistan to whom the children had sent Christmas wishes and New Year greetings which they had made themselves. Children from the eight kindergartens in Karlova Ves were delighted to receive T-shirts, badges and memory games Pexeso with a military theme.

We Are Close to Each Other (January 24) Minister of Defence Mar n Glváč received the new Ambassador of the Czech Republic Lívia Klausová at the premises of the Ministry. Both agreed that our countries have a special rela onship. „I am pleased that coopera on between our Defence Departments is very intensive and resulted in signing an intergovernmental agreement on development of coopera on in the field of defence. We want to prepare specific projects on the basis of this agreement, not just in the field of military planning, educa on, armament, but also logis cs or development of armed forces,“ stated Mar n Glváč at the mee ng. According to the Ambassador, the Defence Department is one of the Departments that come to the fore in the ma er of coopera on between our two countries: „Military coopera on has recently intensified, not only through contacts between the highest representa ves, but also through specialists from the men oned fields.”

Experience Sharing (January 20) The Ministry of Defence of the SR wants to share its experience on the accession process to NATO with Georgia, and further develop bilateral coopera on in the field of military educa on and training. This was confirmed by Minister of Defence Mar n Glváč at the mee ng with Alex Petriashvili, State Minister of Georgia on European and Euro-Atlan c Integra on. „Georgia is an important contributor to ISAF’s mission in Afghanistan and in other projects of the North Atlan c Alliance. Thus we see the space for bilateral coopera on,“ said the Head of the Defence Department.

● To get a more detailed insight into the structures of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic and about the performance of the assigned tasks, the Second Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the AF SR Major General Pavel Macko made on 23 January a visit to the Land Forces Headquarters in Trenčín. He was welcomed by the Commander of the Land Forces Brigadier General Ondřej Novosad, who informed him of the current structure of the Land Forces, on the planned tasks to be performed in 2014 and on the long-term plans of shaping the Land Forces’ structure and long-term development of their capabilities. Deputy Chief of the GS AF SR also met with the officers, soldiers and employees of the HQ. ● On 23 January, the Second Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the AF SR Major General Pavel Macko made a visit to the Training and Support Forces Headquarters (TSF HQ). He was met by the TSF Commander Colonel Martin Stoklasa, who subsequently introduced the current structure of the TSF HQ and subordinate units and informed him on plans, on performance of the tasks the HQ and its subordinate units are to perform and gave a briefing on the organizational changes currently taking place in TSF HQ.

Giant in Our Services (January 20) One of the largest transportation aircraft from serial production Antonov An-124 Ruslan (in NATO Code:Condor) landed on Monday, 20 January, at the Iinternational airport of M. R. Štefánik in Bratislava. This was a part of Strategic Air Lift NATO SALIS. It was the next of series of cargo flights made with respect to the gradual withdrawal of the Slovak contributions from ISAF operation. On the flight, 14 ISO 1C/ISO 1 CX purpose-made containers were transported from the military sector of Kandahar Airfield, with a total capacity of nearly 70 tons. In spite of cold and damp, foggy weather, the unloading and custom procedure went smooth. Having met all the requirements, the containers were loaded on vehicles, which, escorted by Military Police, moved to the barracks in Vajnory to undergo decontamination procedure. Further on, the containers were dispatched to the Multifunctional Supply Base Nemšová.

● Head of the Military Office of the President of the Slovak Republic Lieutenant General Marián Áč, accompanied by the Commander of the seat of the President of the SR Colonel Norbert Kádek, made a visit to the Headquarters of Bratislava Garrison (BaG HQ). He was welcomed by the Commander of BaG HQ Colonel Ján Marek. They both expressed satisfaction with mutual cooperation and good relations. As a token of respect and esteem they presented each other with commemorative medals. ● On 21 – 22 January, the medical personnel of the AF SR took the CPR Course (Course of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), under supervision of Lt. MUDr. Rastislav Jurkovič. The course took place at the Section of training, education and specialized preparation of the Medical and Veterinary Services Division of the Office of the Surgeon General based in Ružomberok, with a workplace in Liptovský Mikuláš. ● On 23 January, at invitation of the Commander of Training and Support Forces of the AF SR, the top officials of the Headquarters met with members of Club of Generals of the Slovak Republic, Regional Group North. The meeting was held at presence of Major General (Ret.) Marián Mikluš, Colonel General (Ret.) Jozef Hrebík, Major General (Ret.) Jozef Dunčko, Major General (Ret.) Rudolf Tvaroška, Major General (Ret.) Dušan Humený, Major General (Ret.) Gašpar Hozman, Major General (Ret.) Ján Ďurove. Commander of TSF Colonel Martin Stoklasa introduced the top official of the Headquarters and gave a briefing on the role and organizational structure of the Headquarters and subordinate units.

Guard of Honour Giving a Helping Hand (January 23) On Thursday, four members of the Guard of Honour of the President of the Slovak Republic handed over the collection proceeds raised to be donated to the Children’s Oncology Center at the Kramáre Hospital, Bratislava. At the end of the past year, members of the GoH PSR and employees of Military Office of the President of the SR collected EUR 450. Some of the money raised was used to purchase school aids and school supplies for children patients. Rest of the proceeds raised was evenly distributed among the Sokol, Brestovský Kanaloš families, whose financially situation seriously deteriorated as a result of the illness their children are suffering from.

23rd Anniversary of Establishment of Military Police

(January 21) On ceremonial parade held on 21 January, members of Military Police commemorated the 23rd anniversary of its establishment. In his address, Colonel Ing. Milan Hamar, Director of Military Police, emphasized effective cooperation with the individual constituents of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic and Ministry of Defence of the SR in defining requirements for capabilities, planning, training and logistic support of Military Police. At the same time, he extended his thanks for the job well-done with respect to the performance of tasks of police protection. On this occasion, the Minister of the SR Martin Glváč and the Chief of the General Staff of the AF SR Lieutenant General Peter Vojtek awarded the members of the Military Police with commemorative medals. Six members of the Military Police were presented with Commemorative Medals of Minister of Defence, six military policemen were awarded with Medals for Allegiance to the Armed Forces of the SR and thirteen members of MP were presented with Badges of the Chief of GS AF SR. The occasion was graced with the presence of Head of Service Office of MoD SR Ľudovít Macháček. Military Police was established on 21st January 1991. Since March 1992, its activities have been governed by the Act No. 124/1992 Coll. on Military Police, as amended.
