01 [ PARKWOOD SPRINGS ACTIVATING PLAN ] DIMENSIONS Urban Landscape Planning Parkwood Springs, Sheffield, UK Team Work Academic advisor, Dr. David Buck 2020.10-2020.11

" Parkwood

Springs, located in a special position, occupies three areas of

Sheffield(Southey, Hillsborough and Burngreave), separating from wealthier areas of the city by the river Don and the steep escarpment and access through poorer and unattractive areas of the city. According to the policy, it aims to make Parkwood Springs a city park that is integrated into the memory of the site (derived from the industrial area and ski village), and closely connected to the surrounding communities. Based on the 5th ecological vision, a feasible and efficient strategy for restoration, activation and regeneration will be proposed, which will help improve the ecological efficiency of the site, provide surrounding residents with a safe place for activities, and reverse the residents’ negative impression of the site. Taking into account the particularity of the Parkwood Springs, reshaping the site will make the site a unique place in Sheffield that can sustainably attract residents to recreation and wildlife to inhabit, thereby improving the quality of surrounding environment and activating nearby residential and commercial areas to promote economic development.

Conceptual plan

This master plan focuses on our hypothesis of 5th ecology. Hope to improve the ecological benefits of the site and surrounding environment through four dimensions; provide public space that sustainably attracts residents to carry out activities; improve the quality of life of surrounding residents and activate the surrounding environment and stimulate the economy.

Proposal on dimensions 1st Dimension

Human activities

The open space on site that can be effectively used is limited. From the perspective of individual human needs, planning is focused on human activities, and general activities and events are set.

Orienteering Orienteering is proposed as a method of activating Parkwood Springs and creating new memories for people. Orienteering is an exciting and challenging outdoor sport that exercises mind and body. It require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. With the complex terrain and diversity of landscape types in parkwood springs, setting up orienteering activities can attract outdoor adventure enthusiasts from Sheffield and even the whole UK. Under the planning, high-quality outdoor experience can promote the development of this sport into a regular event, thereby attracting batch after batch of contestants and tourists. This will promote the economic development of Sheffield and create a new image of Sheffield.

Integrating system Set up an integrating system to encourage people to bring compostable garbage to the site. Every kilogram of garbage is brought to the compost bin, and 10 points will be accumulated through QR code. People can get a stamp for every 50 points, and receive a free ticket for dry skiing or grass sliding if they gather 10 stamps.

02 [ QINGXI CENTRE ACTIVATING PLANNING & DESIGN ] PUBLIC SPACE

HAKKA CULTURE

Urban Landscape Activating Planning and Design Qingxi, Dongguan, Guangdong, China Individual Work Academic advisor, Dr. Nicola 2020.9 -2021.6

"This project produces a landscape planning strategy for activating Qingxi Centre and

develop an in-depth design. It aims to build Qingxi Centre into a sustainable, livable, culturally inclusive, and human-oriented core area. In order to create a livable core area that can reflect the characteristics of Hakka culture, how to combine public spaces and Hakka culture in this program are of vital importance. Public space It meets people's needs for daily living and solve the existing problem (low utilisation, poor infrastructure, lack of Hakka cultural identity and so on). To achieve this aim, the project improves existing public spaces and builds new green spaces by landscape means.

Hakka culture As an important regional factor, Hakka culture affects people's life pattern. This project aims to strengthen the cognition and perception of Hakka culture. It creates physical spaces integrated with Hakka characteristics and provides more opportunities and experiences for cultural activities.

03 [ GREEN SHEAF, GROWING COMMUNITIY, GREAT SHEFFIELD ] RIVER STREETS COMMUNITY Landscape Urbanism and Design Sheaf valley, Sheffield, UK Team Work Academic advisor: Laurence Pattacini, Joseph Claghorn 2020.4-2020.6

"This project is an urban planning and design scheme based on river strategy proposed

by the urban public open space of Sheaf Valley. In order to create the image of Sheffield as an outdoor city, combined with the unique characteristics of the river Sheaf, the existing transportation system and urban street space are optimized to support the entertainment and healthy life of contemporary citizens.

04 [ METROPOLITAN SYMBIOSIS ] RIVER COMMUNITY Urban Planning Sao Paulo, Brazil Individual Work Instructor: Hao Hu 2018.7-2018.8

"Unlike most other cities, a considerable part of Sao Paulo's central area is occupied

by industrial zones and scattered with slums. With the establishment of industrial zones and the emergence of railways, traffic dominated the urban form of Sao Paulo. The Tamanduatei River has gradually changed from a natural form to a rigid River to adapt to the development of the city. Frequent rainfall, rigid rivers and lack of greening made the central area of Sao Paulo a serious problem of rains and floods, affecting a very large area. In order to solve the problem of rain and flood in the central area of Sao Paulo from the planning level, the design made full use of the available land of the city, established social housing and green buffer zone and improved the green infrastructure of residential areas, at the same time solving the problem of rain and flood, providing people with a variety of places of activity and alleviating the pressure of urban housing.

05 [ RAIN GARDEN SQUARE ] RIVER STREETS COMMUNITY Landscape Water Management and Public Space Design Zhongguancun, Beijing, China Individual Work Instructor: Hao Hu 2018.11-2018.12

"Beijing is a city with both drought and flood, located in the north of China. Rainfall in

Beijing is concentrated in June, July and August. Water often accumulates on the urban road surface, which would seriously affect the traffic of Beijing. In order to solve the problem of drought and flood in Beijing, several sunken parks will be built in the city, which will make full use of the permeability of soil and permeable pavement to alleviate the problem of rains and floods during the flood season. The site is located near a shopping mall in Zhongguancun, Beijing. Combining with the surrounding environment and people's demand for use, increasing the infiltrated area of the site and expanding people's activity space, a sunken square and low-lying area with large enough activity area are designed to connect the transformed ecological parking lot, so that the roof rainwater and the runoff of the road surface of the shopping mall can be collected from around to the site, alleviating the problem of the surrounding rainwater accumulation, and making use of the elevation difference of the site and rainwater to form a flood season.

06 [ SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS ] ECOLOGICAL WATER Urban Ecological Design and Management The east side of the Arts tower, Sheffield, UK Individual Work Academic advisor: Mel Burton 2019.12-2020.1

"Located on the east side of the Arts tower at the University of Sheffield, the site is an urban green space with low utilization rate and poor ecological benefits. This small space is divided by parking bays, resulting in space fragmentation and poor accessibility to the surrounding environment. In addition, the site has very few types of vegetation and poor biodiversity. Based on site status, this project mainly analyzes and puts forward strategies from the three aspects of water-veget-people. Water: Make the site as a node in the urban sustainable drainage system, connecting the site with the external and internal surface runoff, slowing down the flow rate of rainwater and thus reducing the probability of urban flood. Vegetation: Improve the original single-layer vegetation coverage, increase the diversity of plant species, and create a good ecological environment with native plants. People: Reorganize the function of the site to provide space for people to rest and activities, connect the surrounding roads and promote community communication.
