elcome back to another extraordinary season with Minnesota Opera!
The 2024-2025 season celebrates some of our most memorable productions while demonstrating our steadfast commitment to shaping the future of the art form.
you’ll see was originally produced in 2016 and makes a comeback to the Ordway stage after travels to other opera houses across the country. In fact, the set and costumes from this show are some of the most rented in our collection, speaking to the lasting artistry that we invest in year after year at MN Opera.
Another area where we demonstrate our commitment to the future of this art form is through the New Works Initiative. We recently announced three new commissions made possible through this program—innovative pieces that will add to the repertoire of stories told through opera. These new works include operatic adaptations of Misery by Stephen King, the graphic novel The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V., and a brand-new chamber opera titled My Name is Florence, based on the life and career of the American composer Florence Price.
As we revisit a production that has touched audiences here and across the country, a story that has been told and retold, I’m reminded of the extraordinary opportunity we have when we tell stories. Stories change minds, hearts, and perspectives. And it is for that reason we continue to invest in bringing more stories to the stage—why we aim to realize our vision to sing every story—stories matter. Thank you for supporting us as we strive to fulfill that vision season after season.

ACT I
At a masked ball in the Capulet palace, Juliet’s cousin Tybalt assures Count Paris that Juliet, who has been promised to him, is enchanting. Lord Capulet presents his daughter to the guests and invites everyone to dance. Mercutio and Romeo have donned masks to sneak into the ball, together with other Montague friends. Romeo tells them about a strange dream he has had, but Mercutio dismisses it as the work of the fairy Queen Mab. In a chance passing, Romeo and Juliet lock eyes and experience the first sparks of love. Juliet explains to her nurse, Gertrude, that she has no interest in marriage, but when Romeo approaches her in a quiet moment, both feel that they are meant for each other. Tybalt happens upon them and recognizes Romeo, leading both Romeo and Juliet to discover each other’s family identity. Lord Capulet prevents Tybalt from attacking Romeo, who, with his friends, makes a hasty retreat
ACT II
Later that night, Romeo enters the Capulets’ garden, looking for Juliet. When she steps out onto her balcony, he declares his love. Search parties briefly interrupt their midnight encounter. When they are alone once again, Juliet assures Romeo that she will be his forever.
ACT III
Romeo visits Friar Laurence at the church and confesses his love for Juliet. Shortly thereafter, Juliet appears with Gertrude. Hoping that their love might reconcile their families, Friar Laurence marries them.
In the public square, Romeo’s page, Stephano, sings a song about a turtledove imprisoned in a nest of vultures. This angers several of the Capulets. Mercutio comes to Stephano’s aid, but soon Tybalt challenges Mercutio to a fight. Romeo steps between them and asks Tybalt to forget about the hatred between their families. Tybalt has nothing but scorn for him, and when he kills Mercutio in their duel, Romeo stabs Tybalt to death. The Duke of Verona appears and, after partisans of both families demand justice, exiles Romeo.
ACT IV
Romeo and Juliet secretly meet in Juliet’s bedroom to consummate their marriage. Juliet forgives Romeo for killing Tybalt. The newlyweds passionately declare their love as day is dawning. They can hardly bring themselves to say goodbye. After Romeo has left, Lord Capulet appears, together with Friar Laurence, and announces to his daughter that she is to marry Paris that same day. Desperate, Juliet turns to Friar Laurence, who gives her a potion that will make her appear to be dead. He promises that she will awaken with Romeo beside her. Love lends Juliet courage: she overcomes her fear and drinks the poison. As she faces Paris at the altar, Juliet collapses. To the guests’ horror, Lord Capulet announces that she is dead.
ACT V
Romeo arrives at the Capulets’ crypt. Discovering Juliet’s body, he believes her to be dead and drinks a deadly poison. At that moment, she awakens, and the lovers share a final dream of a future together. As Romeo grows weaker, Juliet decides to join him in death and stabs herself with a dagger. The lovers die, finally united in eternity.
The story of Romeo and Juliet occupies a hallowed place in Western literature. Most of us have read Shakespeare’s play in high school, or seen the ballet, or watched a movie adaptation at some point. And yet we still return to these characters again and again, finding new moments of inspiration each time. I believe our fascination with Romeo and Juliet is twofold: one, it returns us all to our first loves, those moments when attraction is joyous and young, fun and exciting. And two, it tells us of war. We see two communities who are so violent towards each other that it ruins lives, loves, and families. Whether their story is spoken, sung, danced, or read, we journey with two souls who start as naïve young
❝How fitting that our telling of this tale, returning home to MN Opera after eight years, be filled with the voices and creative history of all those performances, making way for tonight’s cast.”
that our telling of this tale, returning home to MN Opera after eight years, be filled with the voices and creative history of all those performances, making
We begin, under the visual gesture of a single red rose, with a modern Romeo and Juliet, dressed in contemporary clothing. On stage, cast members then “dress” the young lovers in Elizabethan costumes. From there, our heroes rebel against a strict society and bloody familial dispute to find their way together. In the final scene, we see them returned to their modern dress—this time, a poignant sword hanging above them. It is a sign that this story happens in any time, in all times. It’s happening now. Romeo and Juliet remind us that love
show us our own layered definitions of loyalty, devotion, care, wild abandon, and they sing to us
people and are quickly thrust through trauma, heartbreak and tragedy. And yet they choose to remain as one, standing on a precipice and jumping off into the unknown.
This production began at Minnesota Opera in 2016, directed by Matthew Ozawa. Since then, it has travelled to many other cities, sharing its highly symbolic presentation of Romeo and Juliet with dozens of audiences across the country. How fitting

STAGE DIRECTOR
Charles Gounod was a pivotal figure in 19th-century French opera, celebrated for his lyrical style and melodic grace. Born in 1818, Gounod initially pursued law under pressure from his parents but soon followed his passion for music, studying at the Paris Conservatoire. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1839, allowing him to spend time in Italy, where he absorbed the works of Palestrina and became acquainted with the Faust legend—both of which would profoundly influence his later compositions.
Gounod’s music is noted for its rich, expressive melodies and his ability to blend sacred and secular influences. His most famous opera, Faust (1859), showcases his gift for drama and character development through music, blending traditional French lyricism with a spiritual depth. Gounod’s delicate orchestration and emphasis on vocal beauty are key hallmarks of his style, seen again in Roméo et Juliette (1867), where his ability to capture romantic and emotional nuance shines.
Although he composed several other operas, including Mireille and Philémon et Baucis, none
reached the same lasting popularity as Faust and Roméo et Juliette. In his later years, Gounod turned more toward sacred music, reflecting the spiritual inclinations that had always been a part of his creative life, and composed masses, oratorios, and hymns, including the famous Ave Maria

Robert L. Lee
(August 1, 1956 - October 10, 2024)
Minnesota Opera staff and board members mourn the loss of our dear friend, Robert “Bob” Lee. A true lover of music, Bob was an ardent supporter, attendee and board member of Minnesota Opera for many years. At the annual meeting of the board of directors in June 2024, a fellow board member accurately noted that Bob was the “one who always shows up.” Rarely was there a meeting, social gathering or performance that Bob did not attend, despite a demanding career. Bob was generous with his time and talent and frequently the first to raise his hand to join a committee or task force when the need arose.
Bob enthusiastically supported Minnesota Opera programs, particularly the Resident Artist Program. He took great pleasure in meeting the Resident Artists early in the season and seeing them on the stage. He was also an exceptional advocate for the Art Partnership, and his legacy of leadership and support is gratefully celebrated by all four of the partner institutions: MN Opera, Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Schubert Club.
We will all miss his warm presence, quick wit, kind smile and twinkle in his eyes as he peered over his glasses.
These performances of Romeo and Juliet are dedicated to one of our most ardent supports, Bob Lee.
Upcoming events
The Snowy Day
FEBRUARY 8–16, 2025 | THE ORDWAY
In the fresh snow, every footstep is marked with magic. A young boy wakes to find that the first snow of winter has fallen overnight — an exciting day of adventure awaits. Peter delights in making footprints in the snow and meeting new friends, before returning home to the cozy embrace of Mama and Daddy. Based on the Caldecott Medal-winning book by Ezra Jack Keats, Joel Thompson and Andrea Davis Pinkney’s The Snowy Day brings centerstage the fleeting but indelible magic of childhood.
The Barber of Seville
MAY 3–18, 2025 | THE ORDWAY
Where love is concerned, too much is not even enough. Rosina is young, clever, and wealthy, but her greedy guardian desires her and her fortune for himself. Using her wits to outsmart him and find her true love, she enlists Figaro, the mischievous and wellconnected local barber, who has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Plans go awry (resulting in several close shaves) against the backdrop of Gioachino Rossini’s iconic score as romance and a little old-fashioned trickery combine in one of the bestloved comedies of all time.
