MOTIVATION I grew up in family that has business in construction field for 50 years. I have been familiar with products and absorb some knowledge about construction. Moreover, I always fascinate by different architectures when I have chances to travel aboard. I fascinate on how each country has different in its cultures, people, which effect on their Architectures design. All my experiences contributed to my passion as I always curious how to create and design spaces and buildings. I have decided to study Architecture in Bachelor. During my study, my interested in Architecture is increased every year. The assignments were challenging not only my thinking process, analysis skills, design process but also planning structure abilities though differences program since small house, Apartment, public building like Hospital, School, Museum, Theatre, high rise building and urban design studio. As a result, I have developed varieties of fundamental thinking, designing processes, imaginations and design skills. In addition to design related skills, the programme also teach us about other related topics such as planning skills, law and regulation, real estate management, construction methods and structure analysis. This equip me with well-rounded knowledge and also abilities to foresee requirements and needs from different entities. I also develop further interested in heritages buildings from my projects during five years of study. Especially in my bachelor thesis, I have chances to observe and analyze old town area. I realized that it has a great impact on how we live today even though it is fading. However, I would like to help nation to preserve our culture and heritages and gain attention from new generations. That’s why my interest is deeply drawn into heritages development. I also interested in bring the old town area becomes alive again. While saving heritages site, I would also design to blend them and develop the surrounding area in order to match with new lifestyle and attract more people to visit and live in the area again. I strongly believe that I could gain knowledge related to my interested and develop broader other aspects in my master degree. I would be able to exchange unique architecture culture and knowledge from Thailand with the class as my studies at Slipakorn university has provided me with a great foundation of knowledge. According to world-wide reputation of TU delft, I believe that the university will allow me to pursue the knowledge and excellence in my professional career in the future.

This project is a part of my course works in a Thai Architecture design course. The main course’s objective is to study how to design Thai architecture. It begins with understanding local’s believes and knowledge, how to arrange each house’s function and then how to design itself. For example, over 1,000 year traditional wood craft method, House’s proportion and elevation design. My project designed to be a small homestay that has 3 bedrooms. The homestay also has their own café and the owner house in the same area. All are designed in northern thai style called “Lanna”. It is located on the mountain of Pai District in Mae-Hong-Sorn province. In the north of Thailand, it is well known for the beautiful nature, which easily become one of the most popular tourist destination. As a result, there are many homestays and cafes open in the area. The project has to be outstanding. Therefore, I brought out one of its unique feature, that the site itself located next to the river. One of my design’s objectives is to enrich the river view, wind and nature.

DESIGN: Thai architecture design has some unique rules. For instance, Thai tradition belief that house’s front should be facing in north-south direction. The tradition might derive from the fact that the front should avoid direct sun light from east-west direction. Therefore, the main building, landlord house and duplex house were planned to face those direction accordingly. As the project’s requirement has both private and public area, the site has to be divided into two main zones. The first one is public zone for café and homestay, which will be located on the left side. While Private zone, landlord house, will be on the other side. However, both zone needs to enrich the uniqueness of the project. The designed are done so that both zone have river view.

This project located along Chao Phraya River, the main river in Bangkok. Thais’ life was build around this river. Not only they used water supply from the river, but also use it as the most convenience transportation. Over time, even though lifestyles were changing, the river still remains importance to Thais. Along the river, main buildings are individual houses and small piers with a lot of historical buildings nearby. For instance, The Arun Temples, The Grand Palace and Government bureau. For this reason, there are over 1,000,000 tourists visiting this area each year. However the surrounded areas are high density housing , resulting in poor city development. This leads to lacking of public space for both locals and travelers, therefore, the project was proposed to design the area for public facilities, such as, school and public library, for locals, students and tourists.

DESIGN : As school and public library have different activities and usage of the space, therefore, the spaces need to be separated. Because of riverfront’s scarcity, the design meant to share this scared resources by created AXLE run between The Pho Temple and The Arun Temple, to connect school and public library together. This riverfront space will be public space and main circulation of the project. Last but not least, the path will create unblock view of The Arun Temple as a approach background for the project’s entrance.

The school project is designed for public high school. The school will consist of six classrooms and six facility rooms, which are laboratory, cafeteria, auditorium, school oÂŹffice and, school yard. School location is on the left zone, which is next to the local housing. Due to high density of the old community ,therefore , it create noice, smell pollution and criminal problem. The advantage of the left zone is that there are two famous temples on the other side of the river, The pho temple and The Arun temple, which will create unique and scenery for th school. DESIGN : Because of the beautiful scenery, the design will focus on creating connection between each area and maximize those scenery. Not only maximize the secnery, but the connection will also help all areas becomes livier. The connection will be seperated into three levels. First, the connection between outdoor environment and private school area. Second, the connection between each indoor school balcony. Third, the connection between public path and private school area.

The shape of the school building is U-shape with sport yard in the center of the area. The adventage of the U-shape building is to create eye connection between schoolyard area (private area) to AXLE path( public area). This connection will help them becomes livelier. In addition, floor plate and balcony are rotated and skewed in order to increasing view and make eye connection between each floor. There are three level of building’s height according to required privacy level. The more public area is located on the lower floor and closer to the main road. For example, the office and first aid room’s locations are in front of the school due to security and trasportation concern. Auditorium, however, is located in the block next to housing area as it is not required to connected to other areas. All classrooms are located in the tallest building resulting in high security and privacy controls plus the beautiful scenery.

The library opens for public services, which normally is chaotically while the space needs to be quite and peaceful. The complexities of this library design are always discussed. The specialty of this library is that it will be served both students and public. The design need to be concerned about entrance’s privacy, circulation and reading area for all types of user. Design : The main color of reading area will be green to create comfort, lively and welcome atmospheres. The level of atmospheres is depends on required level of reading concentration. From the least to maximum level of concentration are magazine, novel, literature, generality books, sciences, and theory books respectively. The least degree is located at outdoor courtyard, which is divided into two sections by its user types – school and public library. Moderate required concentration is located indoor where there are indirect natural light while the maximum concentration reading area will be in private boxed cantilever from the building in order to create peacefulness and comfortable atmostphere.

The museum is designed especially for history of Thai’s architecture showcase. The purpose is to help preserve and expand the knowledge to wider range of people, therefore, the exhibition needs to be easy to understand according to timeline. The museum’s location is on Ratchadamnoen road, the center of Bangkok’s old town. It is surrounded by museums, art gallery, historical buildings, which are preserved over 100 years. The most important historical building is the Grand palace, which the museum located in the axle road. The design will be integrate historical buildings into the exhibition.

Design : the project will be using the advantages of the location among all historical buildings. After the site analysis, there are couple heritage architectures possible for the integration. The building design will be marked to voids according the linear projection from the heritages. The voids will be used as eye guidance for visitors when they walk in both museum’s circulation and the main exhibition. The center of the building is locate where every heritage axle is intersected, which also will be use as the main entrance. 2

Bangkok Noi canal is a part of Cha Phraya River, which flows from Thonburi side of Bangkok. The location, which is far from city center, was mainly use as agriculture area. The program is to design market which is consist of fresh market, dry food market, local product market, workshop area, convention hall, information center, and bicycle rental area with bicycle track round the project for both locals and tourists. The design needs to fulfilled both locals and tourists’ needs and also how to attract those group to visit the project. DESIGN: The project’s purpose is to improce well-being of farmers and also lower the product price for buyers. In order to attract buyers and tourists, the design will be planning for agriculture-learning center with markets. Visitors can role-play as a farmer, such as, growing rice and learn how to do local’s product. The planning process will be using kevin LYNCH theory about THE IMAGE OF THE CITY; Nodes, Edges, Districts, Path, Sence of place, to ensure that the circulation and project’s contents are easy to understand for visitors.

CROPS AREA

CANAL

The project area is devided into 5 main zone by the main argriculture product in Thailand ; Flowers, Friut, Hydroponic vetgetable, vetgetable, Rice, in order to create leaning’s story line. While there will be three makets wich are, fresh market, vegetable market, and local product market. Those markets have varities of basic merchandises for locals. The markets’ location will locate in the front of the project and also at the road side because it will be easier to access for all visitors. Each zones are connected by canals, which will be used as main water system for agriculture, along with walking and bicycle path. There will be three nodes as the gather spaces for users. They are located at the main project’s entrance, side entrance, and by the riverfront. However, the transition spaces are needed to educate people that the area is changing in each zone.

According to each product theme, each zone has different atmosphere. This will not only help reduce chance of user get confuse between areas, but also each type of plants requires different growing condition. The design will be using growing pattern to distinguish each zone. Building’s design is base on the zone theme, leading to the unique style of building design and structure in each zone. For instance, the most importance thing in growing hydroponic method is the growing system, which requires a lot of lights and clean water, therefore, the building matherial should be glass with water storage. However, for vegetable zone, the important thing is good water circulation because it is easier to grow this type of crops and also easy accessible to the crop field in order to create learning atmostphere. The rice field uses lower path in exhibition to access the field in order to allow visitors to get closer to the crops.

THE LANGUAGE OF ARCHITECTURE : SIMPLIFY COMPLEX ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM BANG-LUM-PHU,BKK

INDIVIDUAL

ACADEMIC

FIFTH YEAR(THESIS)/HOLD YEAR 10/08/15-05/05/16 MR.JEERASAK KUEASOMBUT(annxmf@yahoo.com)

Architecture language was popular in post modernism. Nowadays building is designed with exotic shapes with constrains of timing, cost and profit. Aforementioned reason creates repeated complex pattern. These patterns create unclear function and confusion for users, such as, getting lost in the building. The thesis question is about how to improve communication and reduce complexity in using building’s space. The purposes are to help user correctly use each space when there are program’s complexity and overlapping space and to maximize value of each space. Design : In the beginning, the complex building program is created and studied about user groups, activity types, and changing of area when it is not being used. The next step is to select the location. Banglumpoo was selected because it is in the center of the old town area, which are slowly dying by rapid change of culture and moving out of its residents. After selecting the location, design process started. My design used architecture language as a tool to help simplify the complexity in the building. There are three levels of architecture language as follow; 1. Building organization – the shell of the building and the building itself. It is the visible part from outside. It will influence configuration system within the building and also the easiest part to implement traditional design. 2. Circulation characters – Using natural light to create walking path’s atmosphere according to groups of activities. 3. Space characters – the space identity that will allow user to know whose area are created for.

Banglumphu district is one of the most fashionable area in its peak time, located near previous Bangkok city center on Rattanakosin Island. The area consist of small shops, operate on the first floor of town houses, full scale department stores, temples and houses. The district was planned long time ago, therefore, it has only small alleys with lots of crossing plan created intertwined sections. According to rapid change of lifestyle in the last 20 years, the area is losing its residences. The result of less population, the area becomes quieter and turns into losing its culture identities. My design purpose is to blend in the area’s tradition culture and identities into the building organization.

From organizing system analysis, the Gird Organization method was selected to separate between paths and building functions. By using different material, each unique space was created. For example, wood materials use for walk path, transparent materials use for children playground area, translucent materials use for exhibition area, opaque materials use for Library/classroom area, etc. Building voids are used to classified user types. For instance, random void used by children, big void is a sign for adult to be relax in the area, high/low positioned void is a sign for adult to pay attention, and solid wall is used to limited distraction and let users have full attention on the designed activities.
