THE MAGIC CITY!
Minot was founded in 1886. The community became known as the “Magic City” because, as the railroad was making its way through town, winter hit. The townspeople said the town went up so fast it was practically up overnight….like magic! That same feeling has been happening the past few years as an energy boom hit the area. The growth that occurred during the first five years of the decade took the 2010 U.S. Census population figures at 41,000 into more like 50,000 at present time. The community has met the need with new housing and infrastructure, including a new airport. North Dakota is number two in the nation in oil production, but Agriculture is still the state’s number one industry. The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce, with our 730 members, welcome you! The Chamber is made up of small business, corporations, service groups and nonprofit organizations. We are happy you have chosen Minot for your destination. Enjoy the great places to shop, eat and enjoy the great outdoors. We are very proud of the Roosevelt Park Zoo which now has red pandas, giraffes and a new aviary. Shopping and restaurants have something for everyone whether you are in downtown Minot, at the malls or anywhere else. The Scandinavian Heritage Park, Taube Museum of Art, Dakota Territory Air Museum and Northwest Art Center are just a few of the places you’ll want to stop and check out while you are here. We hope you will also head outdoors and go golfing at any one of our many courses in our area. There’s even one for kids, the Jack Hoeven Wee Links Golf Course. If you are in town for one of our many major events, like the ND State Fair, Norsk Høstfest or the Downtown Wine Walk, be sure to check out the aforementioned shopping, museums and restaurants as well. We’re glad you’ve chosen Minot and hope you will enjoy your time here!

ABOUT MINOT COVER PHOTO

Minot, the start of
‘THE MAGIC CITY’
Minot, located in the valley of the Souris River, is named for Henry Davis Minot, a close associate of James J. Hill, the “Empire Builder,” who was at the helm of the Great Northern Railway. Initially, the city began as a tent town when the Great Northern was pushing west in the 1880s. When construction on the railroad halted to build a bridge across a coulee west of Minot (Gassman Coulee Trestle), a large tent town immediately sprang up which was generally assumed to be the start of permanent settlement. When the selected townsite of Minot became known, the tent town was replaced almost overnight and the new city grew so rapidly it was called “The Magic City.” Minot’s post office was established Feb. 12, 1887. Minot’s current location was selcted in Nov. 1886, and was incorporated as a city in 1887. Today, Minot is a trade center for an area including Canada and Montana as well as northwest and north central North Dakota. The city lies within the eastern boundaries of the oil-rich Williston Basin. The city has a population of 49,450, according to the last population estimate in 2015.

ROOSEVELT PARK ZOO
Online:
Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot is home to more than 190 inhabitants of various species from all over the world. That number increases dramatically when about 3,000 honey bees arrive from a local beekeeper on loan to the zoo for a display in the Discovery Barn. Roosevelt Park Zoo was North Dakota’s first public

zoo and will celebrate its centennial in 2021, the year designated on the cornerstone of the former Zoological Building, now the Aviary Building. A year earlier, the first animal for the zoo arrived in 1920 – a bison from Montana. Ever since, the collection of zoo residents has continued to grow. The okapi, an animal closely related to the giraffe and native to the Congo, two young camels and a black-footed ferret named Osh Kosh are among the zoo’s newest residents. Zoo visitors this season can expect to see new exhibits in-
cluding a prairie dog habitat and many new birds. A new exhibit area for the big cats is being constructed in 2018 to provide them with a larger and more natural habitat. The Discovery Barn is also being redone. Other construction projects recently completed include a new barn for the bison and shared with the camels. A new habitat and bridge for the playful Nigerian dwarf goats was completed in June 2017. The zoo has gone through some ups and downs over the years including two major floods but has bounced back each time into a fully viable facility for visitors with a wide variety of zoo inhabitants plus special programs provided for the zoo experience.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, there wasn’t enough money for zoo improvements. In 1969, the Minot area experienced a major flood and much of the zoo was under water for more than a month and all animals and birds had to be temporarily moved. The zoo went through another major flood in June 2011 when the zoo inhabitants had to be moved from the zoo to other locations, including to other zoos. The 2015 zoo season was the first season since the 2011 flood with all zoo inhabitants. Additions of new animals, new exhibits and the participation in the Species Survival Program have greatly enhanced the zoo. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Starting two years ago, the zoo began remaining open through the winter months, depending on the weather. The winter opening offers visitors a different type of zoo experience to summer, said Becky Dewitz, zoo director. She said some animals like the wolves are much more active when it’s colder. Zoo staff work to increase visitors’ experience and many new and year-round educational programs for all ages are being held at the zoo.

FISHING PIERS & PONDS
Not to be overlooked is the availability for fishermen of all ages to access angling opportunities within the city. Several fishing piers are spaced throughout the city on the meandering Souris River. There’s even a catch-and-release fishing pond equipped with a handicap accessible pier and stocked with several species of fish each year. “It’s really nice to have these urban fisheries where you can catch a fish,” said Greg Gullickson, North Dakota Game and Fish Department outreach biologist. There are five fishing piers within the city. All are popular spots with fishermen who have enjoyed tussling with walleye, northern pike, perch, smallmouth bass and catfish. Each pier is handicap accessible too.
A well stocked fishing pond is located on the State Fairgrounds on Minot’s northeast edge. The Game and Fish Department annually stocks the pond with trout, catfish, bluegill and other species in sufficient numbers to ensure angling fun. School groups and other can often be found lining the railing of the large fishing pier, watching bobbers slip under the water. The pond is particularly busy during the week of the North Dakota State Fair when thousands of fairgoers take the time to drop a THE PIERS ARE LOCATED AT: line into the water in the hopes of catching a fish. •Roosevelt Park (North side of skate park and backside of East loop) Yes, for serious and novice anglers, for parents, grand•Water Treatment Plant parents and youngsters, Minot’s fishing piers and Fair•West of Souris Valley Golf Course (access off east bypass) grounds Pond provide ample opportunity to enjoy some •West side of Riverside Park memorable moments outdoors.

NODAK SPEEDWAY
THE PLAYGROUND OF POWER Conveniently located on the North Dakota State Fairgrounds, Nodak Speedway offers affordable family fun all summer long. Races are held on Sundays from early May to the beginning of September, with races in 2018 falling between May 5 and Sept. 2. Nodak Speedway features local drivers from all over the state, as well as bringing some national flare to our own backyard. The World of Outlaws sprint car For more information, series comes to visit racenodak.com Minot every year, and will be featured on June 17 in 2018. North Dakota native Donny Schatz has been racing in the World of Outlaws for 22 seasons. Schatz has become the third winningest driver in series history. It’s always a show when the Outlaws are in town. Nodak Speedway features four weekly International Motor Contest Association classes with the occasional IMCA Sport Compacts mixed in. Here’s a preview of action to look forward to in 2018.

IMCA Modifieds The top flight was dominated by Ray’s Jason Wolla in the 2017 season. Not only did his six wins at Nodak help him secure the 2017 track championship, Wolla went on to the win the 2017 IMCA Modifieds National Point Standings over Cory Sample from Winnemucca, Nevada. 2017’s runner-up and former multi-time track champion Wayne Johnson from Minot returns in 2018 with a new white and green paint scheme.
IMCA Sport Mods
Turtle Lake’s Isaac Sondrol claimed the track championship in 2017 under the difficult circumstances by holding off Minot’s Erik Laudenschlager by a mere three points on Championship Night. Minot’s Robby Rosselli rounded out the podium in the final standings, but was 48 points back of Sondrol. The streakiest racer in the class was Jeff Hooker from Minot. He won a track-high five out of the 11 races he was in. The field this season can rejoice a little with Hooker deciding to move up to the Modifieds.
IMCA Hobby Stocks
Returning champion Andrew Bertsch from Minot has his work cut out for him if he wants to defend his track title. Looking to knock Bertsch down a peg is 2017 runner-up Vance Tomlinson, who finished 29 points back and missed a feature race, and the 2016 track champion Dana Brandt, who aims to come back and compete full-time in the class again.

IMCA Stock Cars Down the stretch, the Stock Car standings in 2017 provided the most excitement and ended remarkably with catastrophic car troubles for Austin Daae on Championship Night. Daae’s misfortunes handed Dalton Flory the track title by two points. Dalton’s father, Joe Flory, was 10 points back in third place. The Williston father-son duo, along with plenty of other familiar faces, will go head-to-head once again this season.

DAKOTA TERRITORY AIR MUSEUM
See numerous military and civilian aircraft and learn the rich history of aviation at the Dakota Territory Air Museum in Minot. Located at 100 34th Avenue NE, north of the Minot International Airport, the mission of the air museum “is to be a vital historical aviation resource honoring the men, women and machines that have impacted the rich history of aviation through displays and events that educate, inspire and entertain people of all ages.” The air museum was founded in June 1986. The military and civilian aircraft available for viewing include many Texas Flying Legends Museum World War II aircraft. The air museum also has numerous aviation paintings and photographs, aviation items, memorabilia and a gift shop. The Minot Airport beacon, which guided pilots in the Minot area from 1949 to 1993, and the Minot Fire Department trucks from the 1920s and 1930s also are displayed. Several aircraft are displayed on the museum grounds including aircraft like the ones flown by the former 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Minot Air Force Base and a model of a B-52 bomber. Activities are held at the air museum during the year, including aviation camps for third- to sixth- graders. The air museum is open from May to mid-October. Hours are Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Other times are by appointment. For more information call 852-8500 or visit the website at dakotaterritoryairmuseum.com.

MSU SUMMER THEATRE
Season 53 at the Minot State University Summer Theatre will begin under brand new lighting. “I think you’re really going to see what lighting can do on our stage,” said Chad Gifford, adding that the new lights will be appreciated when the lights go down during an evening performance. The organization launched a fundraising effort this past spring to replace the lights, which had grown old. Hess Corporation donated $6,000 for the lighting project and the remaining $12,000 was raised through donors participating in MSU Giving Day on April 11 and from the theater budget. “Lighting creates mood, atmosphere, setting and magic in outdoor theater,” Bill Harbort, MSU humanities chair, said in a press release. “Our campus community is delighted and excited about the potential of this lighting gift.” Gifford, who took over this year as artistic director, has been involved with the Summer Theatre since 1995 and had been helping to oversee the program for the last decade. Most years the theatre company puts on four plays during the summer months, usually three musicals and a comedy.

This summer the plays will include “Sister Act,” from June 12-18; “The Bridges of Madison County,” from June 25 to 29; “One Strange Night,” from July 5-9; and “Seussical,” from July 16-22. “One Strange Night” was written by Crosby native Bradley Dokken, who will return to the state to take a small role in his own play. Actors in the plays come from the university and the community as well as a few actors from elsewhere in the country. “We have people from every walk of life, all ages,” said Gifford. He said preparing four plays for production over the course of a few months is intense and the cast and crew work together night and day and become a close-knit family. Audiences also enjoy the productions. “I think (MSU) Summer Theatre is a pretty unique thing,” said Gifford. “There aren’t a lot of outdoor theaters like ours where you get to sit under the stars and watch shows for a pretty affordable price.” The amphitheatre is located just north of the MSU Dome. All performances during the summer months begin at 8:30 p.m. The box office opens at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $20 for deck seats, $15 for adults, $10 for people over age 65 as well as for current military members, MSU faculty, staff and summer students with a current MSU ID, and $5 for young people under age 18. For reservations, call 858-3228. Gifford can be reached with questions at chadgifford@gmail.com.
