Accumulated snow and ice have the potential to damage many aspects of your home and property, including exterior components of your propane system. “Propane is one of the safest and most reliable sources of energy in winter,” said Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of the Propane Education Research Council (PERC). “It keeps your home warm and allows you to cook and have hot water. A propane generator ensures that you have reliable power in any weather.” While you can’t predict the first snowstorm or hazardous weather conditions, you can put your family in the best position for safety and warmth by planning ahead.

Get to know your propane system. If you are not familiar with your propane system, take a few minutes to review it. Identify core components, including the tank, regulators, meter, piping and supply valves, as well as any appliance vents. Be sure you know where your main gas supply valve is located in case you need to close it in the event of an emergency; in many cases it may be located on your propane tank. Mark your tank and regulator. Use a brightly colored stake or flag taller than the maximum anticipated snow depth as a marker to enable emergency and propane service personnel to locate your tank. Also mark your secondary pressure regulator or meter, which is usually near the side of your home. Check local ordinances about marking tanks and regulators and follow any rules applicable to your area.

Have an adequate supply of propane. Roads leading to your home might not be accessible for delivery, particularly after a snowstorm. Establish a regular delivery schedule with your propane retailer or call to schedule a delivery when the percentage gauge reads 30% to give the retailer enough time to make a delivery and ensure you have an adequate supply of propane. Talk to your contractors. If you use a snow removal service, make sure the service knows the location of all propane equipment on the property. Instruct them to keep their equipment clear of all parts of your propane system, especially tanks, regulators and gas meters. If they shovel snow off your roof, instruct them to never shovel snow onto any part of the propane system and not to block any appliance air intakes or exhaust vents. It may be helpful to designate an area to pile snow safely away from any equipment.

Take Action

Keep snow and ice from accumulating on propane equipment. Snow or ice accumulation can potentially cause parts of your propane system to crack or break, resulting in a gas leak. Gently brush away snow or ice that has accumulated around the tank, meter, regulator and any other piping by hand or using a broom. If you must use a shovel, use extreme caution. If you notice any snow or ice buildup that cannot be removed easily, contact your propane retailer. Do not attempt to remove snow or ice by kicking or hitting equipment.

Be alert to snow buildup. Frequently check areas where snow or ice collect on your roof, structures or nearby trees and clear it if you believe it might fall on any part of your propane system. Heavy accumulations of snow or ice falling on tanks, regulators, meters, piping or valves may cause damage that could result in a gas leak. In high snowfall areas, drifting snow and ice sliding off roofs may require additional regulator and vent protection. If you think this may be an issue, contact your propane supplier for guidance on protection of these components. Keep vents clear. Appliance air intake and exhaust vents and chimney flues must always be clear of snow or ice.

Some homes may have direct vents, which are close to the ground. Improper venting can cause carbon monoxide buildup in your home, which could lead to serious illness or even death. Clear driveways and pathways to propane tanks. Remember that a propane delivery truck needs at least a 10-foot-wide path to be able to deliver fuel to your home. Keep the tank area and a path to the tank free of snow. When plowing, snowblowing or shoveling, do not push or pile snow around your tank, meter, regulator or piping.

Stay Alert for Safety As you look for ways to keep your family warm and comfortable, it’s important to keep safety at the top of your list. These tips from PERC can help keep you and your family safe during cold weather.

Never use a gas oven or range to heat your home. Never use portable gas-powered heaters indoors unless they’re designed and approved for indoor use. Never use an outdoor barbecue grill indoors for cooking or heating, and never use a generator in a garage or other enclosed area. Keep chimneys, flues and appliance air intake and exhaust vents free of snow, ice and other debris. Consider installing a UL-listed carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home.

If you smell gas: 1. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or fire. 2. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking. 3. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise). 4. From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call your propane retailer. If you can’t reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department. 5. Do not return to the building or area until your propane retailer or emergency personnel determine it is safe to do so. 6. Before you attempt to resume use of your propane appliances, have your propane retailer or a qualified service technician check your system to ensure it is leak-free.

A splash of color can refresh the kitchen without a remodel

Some days, do you look around your kitchen and think about ripping it apart and starting fresh? But a full kitchen remodel isn’t in the cards? That’s no reason you can’t give your kitchen’s look and feel a little boost. The easiest way to change things up is to add a pop of color. Bright and bold or soft and pretty, splashes of color offer immediate gratification in the kitchen-cheer department. Some easy ways to do that: Stand Mixer: Talk about color choices! The KitchenAid Artisan 5-quart stand mixer comes in a whopping 46 colors. The hardest part is choosing . should you go with Buttercup, Cobalt Blue, Aqua Sky or the newest color, Passion Red, in honor of the brand’s 100th anniversary? Smeg’s colorful offerings include a crazily patterned Dolce and Gabbana mixer, available at Williams-Sonoma (and carrying a designer price tag). Mixers can be beautiful enough to leave on the counter (which may prompt more cookie-baking, never a bad thing). Food Processor: A touch of metallic adds shine and a little bling to a kitchen. For example, the 14-cup Cuisinart comes in a fun Copper Classic, and I don’t know of an appliance that gets more of a workout in my kitchen. My glimmer-gold version makes me feel a bit like a Kardashian. Big Fruit Bowl: A quick color fix on the counter — both the fruit and the bowl. Fiesta specializes in affordable, colorful tabletop and cookware, in 15 colors (Scarlet! Meadow! Poppy! Daffodil! Lapis! Claret!). The Drift Bowls at CB2 in red and yellow are also cheerful, and you can hunt for something

more unusual on Etsy.com or in local shops. Utensil Pots: Many of us love to keep cooking utensils in a little canister on the countertop for easy grabbing, but we don’t think too much about how that container looks. This is yet another opportunity for color! Glazed earthenware Tabor Pots come in rich blue, burnt orange and deep yellow. And yes, you could also use them for their original purpose, as planters. Poke around a garden shop for some other brightly colored pots. Tea Towel/Dish Towels: One of the easiest and least expensive ways to liven up the space. Pick colors or patterns based on the season, a holiday or just a change in mood, and keep changing them up. Blender: Another go-to kitchen tool, it tends to hide in plain view. You might as well make it count color-wise! Many of the Vitamix blenders are available in arresting red and shimmery copper. More budgetfriendly Black & Decker has some vibrantly hued choices as well. You can tuck a blender in the corner and let it sparkle while not in use. Toaster: Smeg’s retro-looking toaster has models for two or four slices, and comes in colors including red, pastel green, pastel blue and pink. Secor and others also have an array of colors in pop-up toasters. Coffee Maker: While you wait for your toast to pop up, brew yourself a cuppa in your teal or red Keurig K-Mini Plus. Other Keurig coffee makers come in colors like Greenery and Black Plum, so you can pick the one that speaks to your morning aura. If you’re more of a pot-of-coffee person, the Bella Linea 12-cup coffee makers come in lots of colors including lime green, magenta pink and purple.

MATERIALS MATCH-UP The blending of materials on a single tile makes for interesting floor layouts. Today’s iterations of wood-look tile are almost indistinguishable from the real deal, since realistic hues and textures can be printed onto slab, plank or square tiles. The tech is also being used to marry disparate materials into cool new versions: pieces of wood paired with slivers of metal, say, or wood embedded in stone. The juxtapositions are intriguing, and easier both to install and walk on than if real wood, real metal and concrete were fused together. Sant-Agostino’s Timewood has a geometric pattern of wood-look strips in a cement-look matrix; Provenza’s Alter takes the look of shards and panels of reclaimed oak and blends it seamlessly with a ceramic base to create a kicky, midcentury modern design. Antique silks were the inspiration for Florim’s Filati di Rex collection, comprised of floral, jacquard, baroque and geometric patterns drawn from the renowned Italian fabric house Rubelli. Tile designers are also using antique rugs and tapestries as inspiration.

BOLD BOTANICALS Katie Michael-Battaglia, design director for Nemo Tile and Stone in New York, says another trend builds on a kind of pattern that’s been growing for the past few seasons: flower, leaf and tree motifs. “What’s interesting now is to see the explosion of botanicals, typically seen on fabrics and wallpapers, but now moved to porcelain tile,” he says. And again, the wow factor is how accurately new printing techniques can reproduce leaves, grass or even pebbles. With some of the exceptional versions, like Casalgrande’s Padana Limpha ivy-look tile slabs, there’s an almost 3-D effect of a “living wall.’’ The Casalgrande tiles are even treated so when they’re exposed to sunlight, air pollutants and dirt

don’t adhere as readily, making them easier to clean. But the hand of the artisan can also be appealing. At Artistic Tile, Michael Aram’s Orchid collection features carefully crafted 3-D flowers on a black or white background; a panel of the tiles would make striking wall art. And at Tilebar, there are copper-glazed tiles that look like embossed or braided leather. Michael-Battaglia mentions one other major tile trend, which is also capitalizing on fabricating advancements. “Designs are pushing the boundaries on imitating natural stone,’’ he says. “Terrazzo is a great example of this; companies are playing with scale and color with almost cartoonish liberties. Manufacturers have started elevating designs to mimic exotic stone like onyx and gemstones. They’ve moved away from just the imitation of classic stone — marbles, limestones and quartzes — and are creating their own mashups, a stone you don’t see in nature.”
