Noonan couple grows their rural business By JILL SCHRAMM

Senior Staff Writer jschramm@minotdailynews.com NOONAN – Since starting a pumpkin patch in 2016, Hank and Lucy Frandsen have been transforming their Noonan farmstead into a place for all sorts of family fun. Hygge Hills has been a work in progress for the Frandsens since moving back to Lucy’s home community in 2015. Hygge is Danish for a relaxing, warm atmosphere. Hank Frandsen came from Denmark to work with a custom combining crew, and he and Lucy met when she was living in Crosby. After their marriage, they lived four years in Denmark, where two of their three children were born. Upon moving back to North Dakota and acquiring a farmstead that had been in Lucy Frandsen’s family, they opened a fall pumpkin patch as a way to create a fun activity for families who otherwise would have to drive many miles to a larger community to find something similar. In expanding the business, the Frandsens started with a basic shop building with a dirt floor and fixed it up to house a cafe, restrooms and indoor space used during their Fall Fest on the Farm and by individuals and groups for private parties and events. Hygge Hills can host birthdays, anniversaries and crafting parties, receptions and other events for up to about 100 people. If guests want help with food or with planning and running activities or just need a space, Hygge Hills can accommodate them. Lucy Frandsen manages the cafe and hosts crafting classes. “I really love the crafting part of it. I was always in 4-H so my favorite thing was all the different painting and sewing and just anything crafty,” she said. A small section of their building serves as a boutique for selling crafted items. The cafe has been extending its hours. “I always wanted to get the cafe going a little more, especially in the summertime. So this wind tower project right next door to us came through and it gave me the push,” Frandsen said. “We were full-time last summer.” The cafe re-opened this past March after taking a two-month winter break and is open Saturdays through Wednesdays from

8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Wednesdays until the end of summer, the cafe opens from 4 to 7 p.m. for “Cafe and Crafting.” The highlight of the year remains the Fall Fest on the Farm. Along with having pumpkins for sale, Hygge Hills offers tunnels, a zipline, a corn pit, small playground and a corn maze for children, target shooting with paintballs and a train with seating for up to 20 people that traverses the property. Lucy Frandsen said the development is largely due to the talents of her husband, who also runs his own business as a landscaper and builder/repairman. The activity venue reflects his creativity, she said. Hank Frandsen had built a children’s indoor tunnel using hay bales one year. Since then he has built a unique system of tunnels in the wall, designed from a simple tunnel for the youngest visitors to a more complex, three-level tunnel for older children or even smaller adults. Hygge Hills received an agri-tourism grant from the state to expand its operations. That led to the creation of a train that uses a tractor inside the locomotive engine to pull two boxcars. The train also is portable for use in area parades. The Frandsen’s longer term plan is to construct a tunnel and spooky forest to create a haunted train ride. Hygge Hills also has begun holding children’s camps. It held a Harry Potter camp with themed crafts and experiments and is looking at a possible LEGO camp. There also was a Bigfoot Day during a recent Fall Fest that provided children with a Bigfoothunting activity and engaged them in Bigfoot-themed crafts. The projects keep the Frandsens plenty busy. The cafe has hired a couple of high school students to help. During the Fall Fest, Lucy Frandsen’s family helps. “This is absolutely what I love so it couldn’t be better,” Lucy Frandsen said. “We’re always trying to add on,” she said. “We’ve always been talking about different expansions and throwing around ideas of what we could add.” This summer, they plan to finish the train tunnel project using the agri-tourism grant money and are working on an outdoor laser tag area. They continue to dream, too, about new Halloween haunts, rental cabins, a larger playground, a longer zipline and just more to entertain and provide service to their visitors year-round. “We’re in a unique location out in the middle of nowhere – which is what we always called it growing up,” Frandsen laughed. “But we’re trying to see what needs there are out here and what we can fill.”

Regional Editor eogden@minotdailynews.com GARRISON – What started as a place for boat storage developed into Hwy 83 Lawn, Leisure & Tools, owned by Russ and Jeanne Gohl and located along U.S. Highway 83 near the Six Mile Corner (intersection of Highway 83 and N.D. Highway 37) east of Garrison. Hwy 83 Lawn, Leisure & Tools opened April 2. A welding shop will open later and there’s also a warehouse. “It started out we were just going to store boats and it just grew from there,” said Russ Gohl. The store is 9,000 square feet, the welding shop next door to the store is 3,200 square feet, and there’s 4,000 square feet of warehouse. The store is open from 5:30 in the morning until 5:30 at night Monday through Friday and 5:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. “We have a complete line of bait and tackle, we’re a dealer for Green Mountain grills, Toro mowers, T & E Tools, and then we have a full line of automotive chemicals, oils, batteries,” he said. There are also surplus tools and many other surplus items. “There’s quite an assortment of shop tools and hand tools,” Gohl said. Of the surplus merchandise, he said, “A lot of it is brand spanking new.” “A decorative windmill in green and gold John Deere colors stood amidst other merchandise in the store, attracting visitors who dropped by just to look around prior to the store’s opening. “I got six of them and that’s the only one left,” he said of the windmill, several days prior to opening. A couple rows of the Adirondack chairs also already had been sold. Gohl said the store will also be a Yamaha golf cart dealer but due to COVID-19 the golf carts won’t arrive until approximately June. The business has four full-time employees. When the welding shop opens up eventually, there will be a couple more employees. “We’ll have a full-time small engine mechanic on staff,” Gohl said. He said there’s also a digital marketing person on staff. Darryl Revier, of Coleharbor, is general manager. The store has a Facebook page at facebook.com/hwy83. A website is being developed. Work on the building, located on the west side of Highway 83, started last June. Gohl said the work was done by local contractors. Besides customers from the surrounding area, he said, “I hope to draw people from Bismarck and Minot.”

Stanley store creates outlet for local products

BUBBLES OVER INTO RETAIL SHOP

By JILL SCHRAMM

Senior Staff Writer jschramm@minotdailynews.com STANLEY – Hannah Landry’s effort a few years ago to market her excess handmade goat’s milk soap has blossomed into managing a Main Street manufacturing shop, along with a retail store for herself and other hobbyist entrepreneurs. To think it all started with two goats. Landry, a Minot native, formerly worked in the oil industry. She and her husband, Joseph, a Surrey native, moved to Stanley in 2014 and to their current Stanley-area farm in 2016. Living on a farm enabled them to acquire chickens, raise pigs for a time and have horses and ponies. They also took two goats from Joseph Landry’s sister in Minnesota. “Two we turned into 20 in two years,” Hannah Landry said. “It’s an addiction.” Currently with a goat herd of about 25, the Landrys have operated Foxden Farms Soapworks for about three and half years ago, selling goat-milk soaps, lip balms, lotions, bath bombs and deodorants. “I started just making soap in our kitchen,” Hannah Landry said. “When you make soap – when you’re small – you make it six bars at a time or 12 bars at a time. So quickly, you end up with a whole bookshelf that you have to get rid of somehow. And when all of my friends and family had multiple bars of soap, then I had to start selling it. We started selling within six months of when I made my first bar.” The Landrys eventually set up for manufacturing their colorful, artistic soap in a building on Stanley’s Main

Jill Schramm/MDN

Hannah Landry stands with some of the merchandise available in the Foxden Farms retail store in Stanley March 29. Street. They were there for a year. “We rented that building and then outgrew it in the first month,” Hannah Landry said. “We rented it just for production. We weren’t really planning on having the retail space.” However, Stanley’s annual wine walk brought people into the building who voiced their interest in seeing a retail store. The Landrys decided to stock consigned handmade items from other artists and crafters as well as their own soaps and lotions. “Everything we have in our retail store is either local, North Dakota or Minnesota businesses, or womenowned or minority-owned products,” Hannah Landry said. As a retail outlet, space was inadequate, so in July 2020, the Landrys purchased a larger, nearby building.

The Landrys added merchandise through a wholesale company, but providing a retail outlet for local and regional home businesses is still at the heart of Foxden Farms. “You never would know that that talent is here because they’ve never sold at vendor shows. They just did it as a hobby but they never had an outlet,” said Hannah Landry, who also serves on the board of the Stanley Commercial Club. Among its inventory, the store carries items such as jewelry, repurposed furniture, paintings, antique pieces, pottery, books, hand-dyed yarn and crocheted items. For every bar of soap sold, Foxden Farms donates a bar to a shelter or food pantry. The back of the new building houses the manufacturing for Foxden

Farms Soapworks. Joseph Landry, also a deputy sheriff, handles the goat milking and Hannah Landry has charge of the manufacturing. Her soap-making employee is a high school student whom she describes as having extraordinary skill in making bath bombs. Because they had extra space, the Landrys started Escape Goat Events last fall to offer a Halloween escape room experience to the public. The response locally and from as far away as Williston and Minot Air Force Base was so positive that they later created a family-oriented Christmas-themed escape room. Currently, they have mobile, spythemed escape games that people can come and play or rent to play elsewhere. People can book online at

https://foxdensoapworks.com. This spring, the Landrys were in the process of buying a trailer to create a mobile escape room to take to fairs and festivals. The Foxden Farms store is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Foxden Farms Soapworks also can be found at Stanley’s farmers market on Thursdays and at the farmers market on Broadway in Minot on Saturdays. Plans are to expand to the Red River farmers market with the help of Hannah’s sister in Fargo. Foxden Farms also consigns its goat milk products in stores in Fargo and Market on Fourth in Minot and sells online from its website, where visitors can find some of the store’s consigned items.

Tami Chrest, owner of Peony Petals, stands in her floral and gift shop March 30. Jill Schramm/MDN

OLD BECOMES NEW

Floral shop pursues historical look

By JILL SCHRAMM

Senior Staff Writer jschramm@minotdailynews.com KENMARE – More than flowers are blossoming at Peony Petals Floral & Gifts in Kenmare. The 100-year-old building housing the floral and gift shop has been getting new life as well under owner Tami Chrest. Chrest established Peony Petals – named for her mother’s favorite flower and one of hers – four years ago after purchasing an existing flower shop. The building had many previous uses, including as a drug store, pool hall and furniture store. One of Chrest’s first steps as owner was to put her own mark on it. The building’s interior received new paint and a new look, as did the exterior with its eye-catching pink trim. Chrest decided last fall, with the help of her brother and fiance, to remove the existing carpet and tar paper, which revealed an original 1910 hardwood floor, which she refinished. “It was a lot of work but it was well worth it,” she said. “I love old buildings.” She also loves antiques, and the store’s new decor reflects that love. Several antiques from her parents and family farm that have special meaning to her have combined with other antiques she’s acquired to find service in the shop – from old doors and cabinets to a repurposed chicken roost. An original stained glass window at the front of the store is another of the historical aspects of the building that Chrest seeks to give exposure to as well. Chrest is planning another project to remove the drop ceiling

Visit us online at www.MinotDailyNews.com

to expose the high, ornamental metal-tiled ceiling. She expects that project to be largely do-it-yourself with the help of family, although electrical work will require outside help. Chrest was a social worker for 21 years before opening Peony Petals. “A huge change of pace but I love it,” Chrest said. “I’ve always liked interior decorating.” As a sole proprietor, Chrest stays busy with special holidays, proms, funerals, weddings and other events on the floral side of the business. However, she has several people she relies on for temporary help during busy times or when she needs to be away. Both of her daughters and her son also help at the shop at times. Her gift shop sells plants, jewelry, clothing, candles and various decor items. Chrest holds a liquor license, which enables her to include beer or wine in some of the gift baskets she creates. The store is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends by appointment. However, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Peony Petals offered curbside delivery to customers who would call in or email their orders. It also had to rely more heavily on its website and social media to reach customers. Chrest said the Kenmare community has been supportive of the local business. She contributed in return in having served on the Kenmare Chamber of Commerce board. Completing four years in business on April 1, Chrest said the floral and gift shop has been a perfect fit for her. “This is my business and I can make it my own, and I enjoy people and flowers and plants. It’s just fun,” she said.

Staff Writer The Pierce County Tribune ssitter@thepiercecountytribune.com Bailey Nelson started working as a photographer in college in 2016. Now she owns 106B Images inside Rugby’s Wild Minds Studio. “Then, I moved home right after college and we located my studio downstairs (in the Wild Minds Studio building) first.” Nelson is the daughter of Wild Minds Studio owner Daunne Heilman. The building, a former J.C. Penney store, needed remodeling when Heilman purchased it in 2018. “We revamped all this on the second floor,” Nelson said, motioning to her studio’s open ceiling and expanded space. “We just ripped everything out.” “So, we’ve been here about a year and a half or so. This is kind of new for us up here,” Nelson said of her studio. I like it a lot. It’s more secluded. Nelson said she likes working both as a manager for Wild Minds Studio and a business owner. “I like it here,” Nelson said. “It’s fun being your own boss.” “The clients are amazing,” Nelson added. “My aunt used to be here, too, and she had all kinds of baby stuff,” Nelson added, pointing to a rack of hair ribbons and fashion accessories for babies and children. Nelson sometimes uses the items in her photos. “My aunt was Carisa Hoveland. She actually moved to Fargo,” Nelson said. “So, I’ve been taking up a lot more of her clients now, so I’ve added to my client base, which is really good.” Nelson said her favorite photo shoots are with high schoolers posing for their senior photos. “I think it’s because I may be closer in age to them, so I just kind of have fun when I’m taking their picture,” she noted. Nelson’s senior pictures were among several transferred to banners and hung along Main Avenue for Rugby High’s Class of 2020, a group of seniors affected by school closure and cancellations of sports and activities. “I did a lot of photos for the (Rugby High School) Class of 2020,” Nelson said. “I think that was because it was my sister’s class and I had known a lot of her friends, so it was kind of fun getting to catch up with them.” Nelson is a member of the Rugby Chamber of Commerce. As for her membership in the Rugby Chamber of Commerce, Nelson said with a smile, “It’s pretty fun to be in the Chamber. It’s about time.”

GARRISON SHOP AIMS FOR UNIQUENESS

Jill Schramm/MDN

Tonee Matteson stands March 18 in the family business, 1 North Main, in Garrison, which sells a variety of unique products and consigned items.

Handcrafted products specialty of 1 N. Main By JILL SCHRAMM

Senior Staff Writer jschramm@minotdailynews.com GARRISON – Shoppers looking for something unique when in Garrison make a point to stop at 1 North Main. Mike and Tonee Matteson and their daughters, McKenzie and McKaila, opened the shop in 2017 to offer merchandise customers would have a hard time finding elsewhere. The shop might never have happened had not Tonee Matteson been laid off at the Garrison clinic where she had worked as a nurse for 27 years. She left the job intending to focus on her quilting hobby. “But Mike and the girls thought I needed some adult interaction, conversation, and thought if I was just at home that maybe wouldn’t work well for me. So they dreamed this up. And they help. I do the day-to-day operation,” Tonee Matteson said. McKenzie Matteson, an accountant, handles the books. McKaila Behles, formerly Garrison’s Convention and Visitors Bureau director, now works in her father’s insurance and real estate business and handles the promotion and marketing for 1 North Main. The business name comes from the original location at 1 N. Main in Garrison.

When Mike Matteson purchased the building at 1 Central Ave. E. for his insurance and real estate business, they decided to co-locate the shop in the new location, although still keeping the name. Local customers and ones from outside the area have no trouble finding the store. “Minot and Bismarck both take very good care of us. And then we have the lake traffic. And then we have the Dickens traffic,” Matteson said of the popular Dickens Festival held in Garrison between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. There’s also customers from a wide region who discover the store and can’t help but stop by whenever they are in the area. Businesses have found the store to be a treasure for employee Christmas gifts. COVID-19 arrived in the area around the same time as her mother had a stroke and needed care in March 2020 so Tonee Matteson adjusted operations. The store was generally closed, but customers could place advance orders for pickup at the insurance and real estate office next door. The shop also granted some requests to shop privately, and McKenzie Matteson sometimes did pop-up shops to open for short periods at certain times. The shop is known for its old-fashioned soda pop and what Matteson calls nostalgia candy because it is hard-to-find candy that people remember from their youth.

The shop carries a variety of items, from gourmet coffee, seasonings, barbecue sauces and other homemade edibles to jewelry, aprons, knitted and crocheted items, T-shirts and dresses. There’s also candles, stationery, goat’s milk lotions and soaps and wall decor, to name just a sampling. 1 North Main includes both consigned items and items that the Mattesons keep an eye out for to stock the business. The shop includes locally made items as well as items made by other North Dakotans and certain items that are from out of state but rare to find. Personalized items are popular, and many of the shop’s vendors can accommodate those requests. Matteson said part of the goal in being unique is to complement and not compete with other Garrison businesses. To find unique items, the Mattesons travel to Pride of Dakota shows but they also hear about new vendors through word of mouth or online sites. Matteson has added some of her own quilted items to the store as well. She took up quilting nearly 20 years ago. When a cousin gave her a quilted runner, Matteson knew she wanted to try her hand, but with young, twin daughters to keep her busy, she planned to put it off. However, her husband signed her up for a quilting retreat and insisted he needed time alone with the

girls. “That’s when I started quilting in 2002,” she said. “Gradually I started quilting the items on my domestic sewing machine, and then I rented and used a couple of different long arms.” Her mother would join her at the back of the store to help with her projects. When her mother died last September, Matteson purchased a long arm, once again at her husband’s insistence. It sits in the back of the store, named Lucy B. in memory of her mother. She’s able to enjoy her hobby while tending the store, but it also gives the shop flexibility to be open extra hours if she’s there to quilt. The stop’s regular hours are generally Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, sometimes customers message her when they are in town and she’s run over to open the store for them. Working next door, Mike or McKaila also have opened the store on occasion for a customer. Of course, store hours are extended for the Dickens Festival, too. “I don’t have to be here every day so it’s more of an enjoyment,” Tonee Matteson said. She has her sewing machine and long arm to pursue her hobby, with the occasional interruption for adult interaction and conversation. “I enjoy it,” she said. “It’s been fun.”
