Review When the 14th Chronicle came out, I was able to read about many different topics. The Chronicle included articles about a transfer program to Australia which is provided to Hankyong students. There was also a beautiful poem written by professor Leslie Zsoldos. Also, the articles on the presidential elections in South Korea and the United States caught my eye. Reading the Chronicle also allowed me to realize how the Korean Wave has spread so far. I even learned about the history of smoking women. Originally, I was not aware of newly formed English words, so reading that article on new vocabulary words in the Chronicle was a good opportunity to learn more great thing I can point out is the design of that edition of the Hankyong Chronicle. It took my fancy because of its sleekness and sensuality. 2 The most important role of the Chronicle has been becoming conscious of the issues that we often thoughtlessly miss. Until now, I have watched the difficulties that this magazine has surpassed, and I will keep my eyes on future editions. That is the why I hope for the Chronicle to have a bright future. EDITOR’S LETTER

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. … If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could I boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special 4

On July 10th, HKNU (Hankyong National University) was selected by the Ministry of Education for the ‘University Education Capacity Intensification Project’ for the third time in a row. Selection standards for the project include the employment rate of graduates, the amount of enrolled students in the University, rates of scholarship and the relaxation of financial burden of tuition and so on. HKNU earned relatively high marks for every evaluation.

6

Especially, the employment rates of graduates account for over 60% which shows a stable record for the third time in a row. In 2012, tuition fees were lowered by 7.64% and they became fixed this year. The Ministry of Education had it so that about 150 universities applied for the project this year and they were supposed to take a two step assessment. According to the selection standards for the project by the Ministry of Education, the main purpose of the project is not only to improve qualities of education but also build infrastructure under field centered college education. It enforces universities selected for the project to train creative talented individuals. One of the ways to produce advanced models for creative college education is to foster various education systems based on the universities’ founding philosophy. What the Ministry of Education focuses on is how to teach students well, and it promises to fund universities which reflect what the government requests. To enhance university education

‘University Education Capacity Intensification Project’ capacity, universities should develop education curriculum suitable for trends in the educative fusion era. Then, they get funding for a state-of-the-art educational environment. In order to keep up with the times, it should be forwarded that a systemic reformation, an improvement of qualities in education, and an enhancement of the teaching-learning system are promoted altogether in each university. BeomSeok Tae, the president of HKNU, realized how necessary reinforcing the education would be. His main vision is to improve every department to be multilaterally suitable and also to amplify the abilities of each student and professor with a concrete provision in order to brace our capabilities. He promises to cultivate the infrastructure of financial affairs. Under the ‘University Education Capacity Intensification Project’ by the Ministry of Education, both students and professors expect an improvement in the teaching and learning system. Above all, while HKNU converted into a general national university from an industrial university last year, to make a high-tech education infrastructure, it will fund a lot of money to more various education programs – even more so than last year. In 2012, HKNU declared the HKNU VISION 2025 ‘JUMP TO THE FUTURE’ plan to meet purposes of the Capacity Intensification Project. Also, a lot of students in HKNU have become successful in many fields by using their creative talents. We are proving how great HKNU students are. As far as we know, it is only a matter of time before we accomplish Vision 2025.

Why don’t you Leave Campus? Beginning this year, I was selected to be in the 19th LG Global Challenge. Thus, I went to America for two weeks free of charge. How could I go to America for free? I want to introduce my first international activity, the LG Global Challenger.

LG Global Challenger, Introduction

8

LG Global Challenge International Activity

the students hand in after the program. Furthermore, to those teams that receive the grand prize, LG provides an internship and can even offer the winning students a job. Meanwhile, LG publishes the students’ expedition report into a book and distributes it to universities and public libraries. LG also posts these reports on the LG Global Challenger website (www.lovegen.co.kr) so that students, companies, and government agencies can freely use them.

What do you need to be a Part of the LG Global Challenger?

LG Global Challenger is the first and oldest overseas expedition program for undergraduates. Students freely choose the expedition theme and country, and visit the ‘world’s excellent sites.’ Since its first introduction in 1995, it became the major overseas expedition program most popular among university students with the competitive rate of 21:1 every year.

When preparing, you may need some tips. So I want to tell you some tips as a senior.

1. Making a blueprint

The five expedition fields of the LG Global Challenger are Natural Science, Information Technology · Engineering, Economy · Management, Humanities · Social Science and Culture · Art · Gymnastics. The members of the LG Global Challenger spend 2 weeks of their summer vacation, according to each team’s autonomous expedition plan, participating in exploration activities in government agencies, laboratories, universities, companies and social organizations that have the world’s best knowledge and know-how. LG funds all the expenses during the expedition period including flight fees and expedition expenditures and also gives scholarships after reviewing the Challenger report that

Since this is a yearly program, it will start in the beginning of the year. When the LG Global Challenger recruitment begins in March, students form groups of four, decide their expedition topic and make a blueprint. The first stage is selecting a topic. It is important to select the expedition topic, but it is so hard and you might not be able to choose the subject easily. So here are some tips for selecting a topic. - Meet a professor :   You can get the recommendations from him or her. - Read a magazine which you have never read :   It is helpful for your sight to become wider. - Refer to a report which was made by the LG Global   challenger before.

THE HANKYONG

Forward

I think, when preparing, the most important thing is to select good team members. I want to suggest that you make a team with your good friends. Many people might fight with their friends, but it will be a memorable experience. If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, it is a good way to spend time with him or her.

(3) Ask students about your topic: The panels of judges are just professors, not necessarily experts in your subject. It means that they might not know too much about your subject. If you can explain your project simply to anyone, your friends included, then you will most likely have a successful interview.

After making a team, I want to recommend that you should decide who does what, roll allocation, such as making a PPT presentation, collecting data and speaking English. This division of labor will make you work effectively. And you can save your time. There are some things you must do in order to make a blueprint

The blueprints submitted through the LG Global Challenger website are evaluated and selected for an interview, and only 30 teams gain the honor to become among the final challenger members.

CHRONICLE

- Interview:   In your blueprint, there should be some interviews     of internal enterprises or experts. Therefore, you   should  interview with them in advance. - Feedback:   When you finish making a blueprint, you should   receive feedback from your supervisor, professor or     experts.  The more feedback you get, the better your   blueprint will be.

2. Interview After submitting your blueprint to LG, if you pass the primary stage, you have to prepare for the interview. This interview is really important because half of the teams will fail at this stage. If you make it this far, what do you need to prepare? (1) Preparing English questions : This program is internationally minded. So if you pass all stages, you will go to an overseas country. They want to know you will be fine and successful in that overseas country. To give you little tips for the English interview, one of your team members must speak English. So make sure you find a team member who has good English skills. (2) Do a simulated interview : You can do a practice interview with some expert such as a professor or a native English speaker. In our college, I can recommend some professors: Breshahan Patrick James and Yeon mi Pack. They can help you by asking some English questions about your project. It’s good to prepare in advance.

When you become a challenger member, you can get lots of new experiences. With your team, you might reach the end of your patience and want to drop out of this program. However, in the LG global challenger program, you must persevere for the experience is worth fighting for. Firstly, you can meet lots of people who are in not our university. Meeting many people, you can learn an indirect experience about life and LG. Secondly, you cannot imagine what a great experience I had in America. Also it was for free! I did not bring any of my own money. I always wanted to go to a foreign country. I had enough passion but I didn’t have enough money. I felt it was possible to travel abroad without using my money. Lastly, after the expedition, if you win the prize, you can get a job offer by LG. Honestly, can you join a major company like LG? Do you have lots of specifications? Can you compete with the thousands of people who apply to work for LG? Once you join this LG Challenger program, you are at the same level as those thousands of qualified people who apply. You can get a chance to join the LG Company without even interviewing. Although you might not get the prize, it is worth while applying to this program. Every student who graduates wants to get this job. So you do, too. This program, the LG Global Challenger, is the oldest overseas expedition program and is very popular. It is certainly good for students. But in our college, no students have tried this program in the past. I was the first global challenger from Hankyong National University. It is such an honor to me. However, after me, I hope that more HKNU students become global challengers by trying this program.

**This article is identical in content to the 304th Hankyong Newspaper, Interview section of professor Ho-Taek Oh.

12

“It is critical to endeavor to make our school the main university in the Gyeonggi region with firm convictions The 304th Hankyong newspaper published an open forum about matters of public interest and influence that the university has. At this debate, our university professor, Ho-Taek Oh, who

Professor Ho-Taek Oh

is also the director of the headquarters of the International Cooperation Center, also took part in one of the discussions. The role and position of our school has been increasing as the one and only national university in Gyeonggi-do. This article will demonstrate how Hankyong National University has been preparing in order to become the main university in this region by giving an interview with professor Ho-Taek Oh.

Q. At this juncture, what is the role of Hankyong National University nationally and in this local community? A. We provided quality education with low-cost to our students as a national university. In comparison with other private universities, we are already implementing tuition at half. Also, it is our strong point that we have sufficient research capacity and educational competency in foundational studies and large-scale investment which is laborious for most private universities. In particular, opening the campus to locals and education for residents are a form of serving the community.

Q. Is there any limitation to being a national university compared to other national universities?

Sun-Woo Kim fin9214@nate.com

A. Because of being located in Gyeonggi-do, our school is regulated under the Seoul Metropolitan Area Readjustment Planning Act. Under these circumstances, it is quite hard to say that increasing the number of students or departments will result in a quality education. Our school, however, has always strived for development of the university as much as possible.

Q. To pursue being the main university in Gyeonggido, which parts does the school care about the most externally? A. As I mentioned above, we are looking for an exception to the Seoul Metropolitan Area Readjustment Planning Act by carrying forward a plan. Furthermore, to be the best university that represents Gyeonggi-do, establishing a base in Suwon where the seat of the provincial government is part of the process. Our school has taken the first step to put into effect a development plan, a research installation in Jungwang-dong Siheung-si where the school established plans beforehand.

THE HANKYONG

Interview

CHRONICLE

Q. In comparison with endeavors in the past, what is different in strategy at the moment? A. A number of school members and the former president of Hankyong did make a lot of effort such as a transformation of the system and so on which contributed to ensure internal stability. Now, we strive to convince others of the importance of advancement from various angles towards the outside. For example, there is an interchange with the Education Ministry and Gyeonggido as well as Anseong-si. The school is hoping not for one-sided support, but assisting Gyeonggi-do and Anseung-si with the maximum amount of effort.

Q. If there is a problem with being the main university in this region, what are some solutions?

A. We would not say that the main national university in the region is a concept of law; however, over ten thousand enrolled students is a general standard. So, it is unavoidable to gain recognition with an exception to the Seoul Metropolitan

Area Readjustment Planning Act or to merge with another national university. But in recent years that has changed. It is hard to gather over ten thousand students no matter what integration with a Korean national university or Korean national college of rehabilitation and welfare occurs. Therefore, we should create a conceptual

shift whether or not we implement a wider range of cooperation and integration with a private university.

Q. In conclusion, are there any comments to Hankyong students and members? A. The pursuit of being the main university in Gyeonggi-do leads to the development and expansion of Hankyong National University. To all members in Hankyong, our school’s growth comes with individual growth and to achieve this goal, we must try and try under firm convictions. Of course, there are still many barriers that we must go through; however, our school has a clear goal to be the main university in the Gyeonggi region and by extension, heading for higher rank is our ultimate object. I believe that it will become true in the near future and we will create better conditions for our future students.

In 2011, people whole around the whole world were shocked to hear that the Great East Japan Earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 off the coast of Japan occurred on Friday 11 March, with the epicenter approximately 70 kilometers east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tohoku and the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 30 km. It was the most powerful known earthquake ever to have hit Japan, and the fifth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900. The earthquake triggered powerful tsunami waves that reached heights of up to 40.5 meters and it caused nuclear accidents, primarily the level 5 meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex. The major tsunami that brought destruction along the Pacific coastline of Japan’s northern islands led to the death of thousands of lives when entire towns were devastated. Also, residents within a 20 km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and a 10km radius of the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant had to be evacuated. This was just the beginning. When people living in other countries realized how dangerous exposure to radiation is to people, which results in biological and mental problems, they felt fear

The truth of radioactive contamination in Japan

and issued respective warnings. If a person’s body is contaminated by ingestion or by injury and standard cleaning cannot reduce the contamination further, then the person may be permanently contaminated. Many efforts have been carried out in Japan by burying and covering the contaminated substances with concrete, soil, or rock to prevent further spread of the contamination to the environment.

The effort to conceal the truth As of 2013, The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, assured that contaminated water in the Fukushima plants had been completely blocked. Despite his assurances, water contaminated with radiation has been flowing out into the Pacific Ocean. On August 19, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) revealed that high levels of radioactive contaminated water are leaking into the ocean from the storage tank - at least 300 tons every day. TEPCO estimated that between 20 trillion and 40 trillion Becquerels (a unit of radioactivity) of radioactive tritium have leaked into the Pacific Ocean since the disaster. But the question is what the truth is. According to the chart above, the Japanese government changed their attitudes to contaminated radiation. The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, appeared confident of completing a thorough cleanup of the Fukushima nuclear disaster by 2020, as Tokyo is set to host the 2020 Olympics. However,

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) admitted Fukushima radioactive leaks are impossible to stop. “Any contamination in the groundwater would eventually flow into the ocean,” said Ken Buesseler, a marine chemist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. “That is very difficult to stop even with barriers which TEPCO installed called “silt fences,” in the harbor in April 2011 to suppress seawater traffic because water and fine mud particles can penetrate the silt fences through grids of minuscule holes.” Those attitudes lead to strong doubts among its Asian neighbors. Recently, the government of South Korea banned all fishery products from eight prefectures in northeast Japan because of radiation contamination concerns from Fukushima. South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries confirmed the decision as Japan failed to provide accurate information regarding the status and future of the contaminated waters that leaked from the defunct nuclear plant.

Why does Korea need to sanction imports of Japanese fish? There is evidence of how terribly contaminated products affect people. There was a movement in Japan to promote products from Fukushima called “Fukushima is safe”. One of the rock stars in Japan, a member of TOKIO, led the campaign and was diagnosed with ‘radiation infection’ a year later. The rock band appealed to how safe products from Fukushima are and ate them before an audience. The term 'radiation infection' means that people are infected by eating food from contaminated radiation zones.

Can Korea be safe from radiation contamination? Hurriedly sanctioning imports of Japanese-caught fish may be the first step but we all know it will not solve the problem. The

Besides doubting what the Tokyo government says, people in Korea begin to question the results of the analysis. Now people are obsessed with and fed up with news of contaminated radiation. Also, there are a lot of rumors that indicate that there is the hazard of Fukushima radiation, which makes people grow restless. Some strange fruits and vegetables have reportedly turned up in villages surrounding Japan’s stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Because of the rumors, people abstain from eating products from Japan including all fishery products and seek ways to protect themselves from food and fish from Korea as well as Japan. Several provinces in South Korea have tried to enact an ordinance concerning Safety Food Product Purchases from radioactive contamination of the School Lunch Program in Korea. But the problem is how we can trust the results of the analysis. Sasaki Ruri, who has a child in Fukushima, got the results of a medical health examination which said there were no problems in his child’s body. But two months later, a private medical center diagnosed his child with a tumor in the

thyroid and cesium was found in his urine. As we realized possible errors of radiation checks following the case of Japan, to assure Koreans who feared exposure to radiation that the government remains vigilant for any possible threat of radiation contamination, the ministry said that there will be an increase of radiation checks on Korean waters near Japan. Four areas in South Korea will have a twice monthly inspection from once every quarter. Until now no country has yet offered effective technological assistance to solve problems and does not know if certain radiation tests used in Korea and Japan are effective. Actually no one knows how to save the region from the world’s first catastrophic experience. Even though TECO is now attempting to build ice walls around the perimeter to stop the leak of contaminated water, the method is yet to be proven effective. What we have to do now is not conceal the truth about the status of the leak of radiation accompanied with hazards to people’s health, but to fund the development of more advanced water treatment equipment and prevent the leaks from contaminating outside groundwater. If government officials try to cheat and conceal the truth and status of the exposure of radiation one more time, people in Korea and Japan and even around the whole world will not be able to help but feel fear and suffering from more severe disasters again. As the government of South Korea proceeded to the banning of fishery products from Japan, however, they said that waters are still safe from feared radiation contamination coming from Fukushima. According to South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, “The result of an analysis of waters from six sea areas that was conducted jointly with the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission showed no traces of induced radioactive materials or only minuscule traces.” The ministry also reminded people that the level of radiation allowed in food is 100 becquerels per kilogram. “The test confirmed that marine products produced from our waters are safe from radiation.”

MUCHA

CHRONICLE

How do you feel about this poster? Isn’t it beautiful? I especially like it among Mucha’s works. Do you know Mucha? His full name is Alfonse Maria Mucha. He was born in Ivancice, southern Moravia, in 1860. When he was young, he lived in a religious atmosphere. So, this became his inspiration. After that, when he was 35 years old, he drew the ‘Gismonda.’ It was a play poster about a very famous actress in Paris at that time. After this, he got some fame and quite a bit of money. People thought he was a Maestro within the Art Nouveau movement. In 1910, he returned to his nation, Czechoslovakia, and dedicated himself to drawing the Slavs. On the 13th of July in 1939, he died of pneumonia. One of my friends introduced me to him. We became curious about him and Art Nouveau. So, we went to a gallery that featured Mucha last August. The exhibition had 6 parts. The first part was about ‘Gismonda’ and the early part of his works. The second was about his ad posters. It also was considered decorative art. It gave him some inspiration. In the third part, we saw Mucha as a very successful painter. And in the fourth, we could learn how religion is shown his work. The fifth part had ‘The Slav Epic’. So, we saw his patriotism in this part. Lastly, in the sixth part, we came to know his Utopia. In the end of his life his subjects were of love, peace and wisdom. He believed these are very important to humans. So, he wanted to complete this project but he passed away in the middle of drawing. A very important thing concerning his paintings is Art Nouveau. It was in fashion from 1890 to 1910 around America and Europe. When people heard ‘Art Nouveau’, they thought of ivy, curves, and the beauty of women. But that is not all. ‘Art Nouveau’ was an art movement. In the end of the 19th cen-

And aside from this we can find Art Nouveau in architecture, interior design, decorations, tarot cards and other paintings. In architecture ‘Art Nouveau’ is expressed softly. Architects use this style we make buildings appear elegant. In fashion, this Art Nouveau expresses femininity because it uses the smooth curves and clothes beautifully show the women’s body line. In interior design, this style of art is used to make an antique atmosphere. With accessories, because of a variety of lines, Art Nouveau gives a splendid feeling. I was especially surprised when I saw some tarot cards. Many tarot cards use this style. It is very beautiful. By researching more on ‘Art Nouveau’ I have found that it is very modern. If you have some interest, seek out more information online or at the library.

tury, almost all artists denied the old style and they sought something fresh. Mucha became famous thanks to this style. Most of his works express women’s beauty, decorative patterns, and various colors. He also made an effort to express art in real life. He tried to match business with art. Because of his effort, commercial art was considered to be at the same level with pure fine arts.

CHRONICLE

On July 6, 2013, Asiana Flight 214 crashed at San Francisco International airport as it was about to land. Among 307 passengers and crew, 3 Chinese teenagers were killed, and 181 were wounded, some seriously. After the plane hit land, there was a fire in the aircraft which burnt out about half of the body. The total number of casualties was relatively low compared to other plane related accidents. However, it was then that the Western press began to focus on Korean culture as a significant cause of the tragic. Not just a few media it asserted either – the Foreign Policy, CNBC, CNN, and even National Geographic websites did and they all raised the question of whether the hierarchical Korean culture may have led to the accident. In other words, the several authoritative presses speculated that the air accident was caused due to the strict culture which makes the crew hesitate to speak during any contingency at all. Some critics refuted this argument. So, if culture plays a critical role in an accident, why is it that nobody asks about Western culture when their airlines go down?

Connection between the culture and the plane accident “Korean Culture May Offer Clues in Asiana Crash” – NBC News “Could the San Francisco Crash Have a Cultural Component?” – LA Times “Could Malcolm Gladwell’s Theory of Cockpit Culture Apply to Asiana Crash?” – National Geographic

Why Do They See Culture Through the Crashed Plane?

The stated headlines were provocative but it was quite astonishing that some mass media (even many people heard of this) put these sentences as headlines on their paper. ‘Outliers’ was published in 2008 by Anglo-Canadian pop culture expert Malcolm Gladwell. He puts forward the claim that the problem was not bad planes or bad pilots, but Korea’s top-down hierarchical culture. This is to say, copilots are reluctant to criticize the pilot even when other pilots guide the plane in the wrong way. In a 2008 piece in Forbes, he writes, “What they were struggling with was a cultural legacy, that Korean culture is hierarchical. You are obliged to be deferential toward your elders and superiors in a way that would be unimaginable in the US.” But Gladwell also noted that Korean Air pulled off a “small miracle” and became “as safe as any airline in the world” by working to change the problem. On the other hand, even language structure has come up for as a potential factor. Writing for NBC, Hee-Sun Wee says, “In the Korean language, you speak to superiors and elders in an honorific form that requires more words and can be more oblique than in English, for example. … This may sound trivial. But put this in the context of a cockpit, where seconds and decision-making are crucial, and communication and culture can matter.”

“It seems unlikely that if this were a United plane, we would be wondering about American culture as a major source of the accident.” – John Lie, Berkeley sociology professor of California University

“I think linking the Asiana plane crash to cultural causes or making appeals to Confucius in the cockpit is a symptom of the thinly veiled racism that somehow still holds sway with some audiences. I have yet to hear how the most deadly plane crash in history involving a Dutch airline had a cultural cause” – Elizabeth Shim, Journalist “You have militarized cultures in the cockpits in a host of places. It does bring problems, a lot of problems, but it is not necessarily related to a higher accident rate. For me, all this talk …… smacks of Orientalism.” – Korea Times, Vladimir Tikhonov, East Asian Studies professor “If an (apparently) mishandled approach shows something

about Korea – or East Asia, or Confucius, or rote-learning systems- then what do we make of the many thousands of Asisan-piloted flights that land smoothly and safely throughout Asia every single day?” – James Fallows, The Atlantic “The only reason why people are even referring to the Korean culture is because of Malcolm Gladwell’s argument that Korean culture contributed to the 1997 crash of a KAL jet in Guam. Now, Gladwell’s analysis has all kinds of issues, including the fact that he never bothered to interview an actual Korean pilot in order to vet his theory.” – Anonymous, blog ‘Ask A Korean’ It is just as well that the Korean public does not seem to be buying the cultural argument. Observes journalist Shim, “The good news is most Koreans actually do not think their culture caused pilot oversight. They have moved beyond being victims of stereotyping and racism.”

Is Syria Okay?

Syrian has become pained because of civil war. Syrians have been expressing their bitter experiences for the past two years. It is a civil war. This war has arisen because of their dictatorship. Although they have democracy, they have been living under controlled absolutism for a very long time. At first, their resistance was peaceful. Their ways of protesting were various, just like Egypt and Tunisia. But the government reacted very tough. So, the citizens made an army. They fought their government.

thousand people, including women and children, died. So, many nations hope to control the Syrian civil war. Russia and China have stepped back because of global intention. Almost all nations conclude that the civil war must stop. We are reminded of Kosovo in 1998. At that time, Kosovo had a civil war. Many nations thought it was Kosovo’s problem. But they were wrong. In Kosovo, three hundred thousand people were killed because of genocide. After that global intention blamed America and other world powers.

During the strained relations, the Syrian government forced their power on citizen’s army. The government used snipers and some tanks. Many Syrians were killed or hurt. The dictatorship cut water and electricity. Also it had their army ‘buy all flour and food.’ They thought if citizens did not have enough food they would give up in the end. But brave citizens have not given up. Finally, the Syrian government used chemical weapons on the general public.

America wants to intervene in Syria. But they do not have enough reason and are hesitant because of their relationship with other Middle Eastern countries. And other countries hesitate for these four reasons. First, Syria is different than Libya. Libya used global power to help the citizen’s army. But, Syria does not. So, many countries worry about Syria and it has become a sensitive issue. Second, world countries have no justification in intervening. The global society wants to have sanction and punish the Syrian dictatorship for their inhuman actions. But they do not want to sacrifice their own armies. Third, the most important thing is each country’s profit. Syria has a little oil. Although they would help the Syrian people, they could not get enough of a financial benefit. Lastly, Syria’s autocracy is very powerful. The current president’s family has been in duty for a very long time. So, it would be hard to take their power.

Because of the use of chemical weapons, many countries around the world became divided. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany want the citizens to have control of Syria. On the contrary, Russia and China want the government to stay in power. Officially each nation is not doing something for Syria. But, America, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey have given some weapons to the citizens. England and Germany give some information to the Syrian citizens. Russia has sold many weapons to the Syrian government. China is the reason for their diplomatic relations and for helping the Syrian government’s resources. But on August 25th, the Syrian government used chemical weapons on the general public. On that one day, fifteen

After learning of Syria’s use of chemical weapons, the world seems deep in thought. And now, Syria has agreed to stop using chemical weapons. They have until this coming November to remove all of their chemical weapons. So, now researchers are seeking out any illegal weapons in Syria.

Science

Thomas Edison once said, “Sleep is a criminal waste of time.” Although there is no doubt that Thomas Edison was a great inventor, we generally agree that sleep plays a very important role in our lives. Most of us (at some time in our lives) experience the negative effects of sleep deprivation, and I am sure many of us just cannot wait for the night to roll around after a long day’s work. You get to put aside all your worries, and try to fall into a nice, sound sleep. We expect sleep to replenish our energy. We expect to wake up and feel refreshed. This happens during what is known as a restorative sleep cycle. After a good night’s sleep, we feel ready to attack the problems of the day. But what we normally do not think about is why we sleep. Why is that? Why does it not occur to us to ask the question of why we sleep? Maybe this is because sleep occurs without effort and therefore should also occur without question. Or maybe we just never thought of asking the question. Either way, we spend roughly 1/3rd of our lives participating in this activity. So, some examination into sleep and our sleep cycles is prudent to say the least. Let’s just discuss the three big theories surrounding sleep. The first theory is the Inactivity Theory. This is the general idea that when predators are lurking around in the shadows, it is advantageous to remain quiet. Natural selection ensured that this behavior was passed on to humans, and this is one of the main reasons why we sleep at night. The next theory is the Energy Conservation Theory. This is the idea that energy (and food) is scarce, meaning that we should attempt to consume as little as possible. Also we should only search for energy when it is most optimal to do so. This would explain why we sleep at night.

Why do we sleep?

It is difficult to find food at night, and we would expend more energy by remaining awake at this time. Finally, we have the Brain Plasticity Theory. This is the idea that sleep is related to the development of the brain. During our infancy and childhood, we need more sleep. This is correlated to our brain development. Conversely, as we get older, we need less sleep. This is because our brains have already developed. We should briefly discuss some of the different ideas and theories floating around about sleep. A major cause of sleep is definitely fatigue. Truly, everyone who has ever worked a hard day’s work in their lives knows this. This means one of the functions of sleep is restoration. This is a major theory called the Restorative Model of Sleep. In order to achieve restorative sleep, it is predicted that we must enter a sleep cycle of no less than three hours of uninterrupted sleep. After those three uninterrupted hours of sleep we experience what is known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement). It is called Rapid Eye Movement sleep because your eyes actually move around under your eyelids while you sleep. The best restorative sleep is thought to come after two successive REM sessions during one uninterrupted sleep. Simply, if we are asleep for 6 hours, we get the best sleep. REM sleep is also the stage in which lucid dreaming occurs. Often times in Asia, you can hear rumors about how dreaming during sleep actually is the worst quality of sleep you can achieve. This is not true; in fact, if you were having a vivid dream, you were most likely getting the best sleep possible! You might believe that having a nightmare will result in you getting poor

Jung-Hoon Lee charismajake@hotmail.com

sleep; however, dreaming and having a nightmare is scientifically proven to be better than sleeping and not dreaming at all. In fact, if an individual goes for a long enough period of time without having any dreams, they are prone to many mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or psychosis. Nightmares, or negative dreams, are very important and are actually more valuable than positive dreams. A nightmare is thought, by psychologists, to be a major way that we deal with negative thoughts and experiences we face during the day. The only time a nightmare or dream is actually a bad thing is when we experience what are known as recurring dreams. These often signify a serious mental disorder: PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Anxiety, or OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). These can also occur after a major traumatic moment, such as a divorce or a death in the family. It is important to note that just because we experience a recurring dream; it does not mean we have a mental disorder. So let’s go back to our question: why do we sleep? Do we know for sure? We cannot say with any degree of accuracy. It is a question that even our best scientists cannot answer as far as root causes go. Nevertheless, human beings know that sleeping is one of their most important instinctive activities. There is one solid agreement across the entire scientific community: sleep is of the utmost importance. Whether you take a cat nap, catch 40 winks, or just saw some old fashioned logs, it is never a waste of time to sleep.

You are going downhill

26

College students are in transition from adolescence to adulthood. During this period, eating habits have a potential to change an unhealthy diet before being fixed as well as reflect past habits. And it is also one measure of a nutritionally balanced life between members of the community. Today with westernization and an improvement of living standards, a dining culture of overconsumption and processed foods has an effect on nutritional imbalance of college students. Especially as university students, it is critical to recognize the importance of adaptable nutrition intake because college students are more active both physically and mentally. However, most students usually eat prepared foods, instant foods and fast food. That makes them unstable from a health perspective. We need to change this diet as soon as possible.

How to go uphill So there are four pieces of advice for those who do not know how to fix it. 1. Eat regularly – Do not skip meals It is important to have a meal in accordance with body rhythm. In particular, breakfast is necessary when it comes to

You are what you eat

getting essential nutrients to use a day well. But most people do not enjoy their meals on time on some pretext or other. So let us see how important it is. 1) Significance of three meals – When skipping a meal, it results in overeating later. Our body tends to react by saving energy so if meals are missed at times, body fat will be accumulated in the body. 2) Value of breakfast – Skipping a breakfast leads to result in a lack of essential energy in the body. In particular, blood sugar will be low, which means that the brain will not receive sufficient glucose. As a result, it will be hard to develop enthusiasm for work and easy to become lethargic. 3) Problem of latenight-meal – Energy which is accumulated by breakfast and lunch does not yet turn into body fat but with a dinner that has high-calorie foods it is easy to gain weight because the surplus is laid down as fat. Late-night-meals bring obesity which causes heart problems, diabetes and other medical disorders. Also, it provokes reflux esophagitis due to a backflow of gastric juice during the night so that it is natural to suffer from chronic fatigue. To sum up, if irregular eating habits last long, it entails nutritional unbalance and ruins physical health such as the digestive system.

2. Eat appropriately Eating only what one wants is not good for health, no matter how high-quality the foods are. Nutrients are not restricted to certain food groups but distributed over a wide range of food groups. Therefore, to have nourishing meals, enjoy a wide variety of healthy foods to get sufficient nutrients. In other words, eating a variety of foods is the best way to get the vitamins, minerals, calcium and may other nutrients we need each day.

3. Less sodium Most Koreans are constantly accustomed to eating salty. Eating salty foods can give us an appetite but eating overly salty foods can also cause many health problems. Thus it is best to have your food as bland as possible. But for most students in particular it is easy to be exposed to sodium. Processed foods and fast foods are notable examples. Realistically, It is difficult to avoid eating processed foods, so try to reduce them as much as possible. Another effective way to cut the use of sodium is to use less monosodium glutamate and to use fresh ingredients when cooking at home. Fast foods are chunks of sodium. Fast food is high in calories, saturated fat, trans fatty acid and natrium, and has fewer vitamins and essential nutrients. As a consequence, eating fast food ruins nutrition which can have a negative influence on a student’s body. However, when eating fast food is unavoidable, choose milk or juice instead of coke or cider to get vitamins and minerals and also choose a salad instead of French fries. That is a minimal effort to enjoy less sodium 4. Eat pleasantly There is nothing better than having a meal with a pleasant

feeling. This means that eating is easily affected by circumstances. Many dieticians recommend eating happily. The reason is eating without any anxiety is not only an excellent source of energy, but will boost the levels of the ‘happy hormone’ serotonin in our brains.

You will be on the uphill As I mentioned before, 20-somethings are physically, mentally and socially in transition. They are experiencing a lot of change in their life as well as escaping the control of their parents which can cause unexpected irregular habits like frequently eating out and drinking. In particular, because they are easily responsive to external change, their dietary balance is vulnerable to meager meals, irregular eating and excessive drinking. For this reason, there is still the possibility of improvement. The improvements listed above are not difficult and actually everyone knows these facts. If each and everyone has a will to correct habits, anyone can follow this easily. It is important to perform this advice step by step. You do not need to overburden yourself from day one. You just go through life and one day you realize you are not the same person you used to be. Lastly, dietary habits take one’s day which means they take one’s life. On recalling that sentence, how about trying from lunch today? *reference: Hye-Mi Choi, Young-Suk Park <Meal Management> 2011 Kyomunsa Yeon-Su Cha, Hyun Park, Kyung-Hye Lee, Ok-Kyung Yu, Yeon-Su Kim <Meal Management and Way of Exercise> 2011 Lifescience

The Art of Candid Street Photography

The world we dwell in is not staged. Our environments are raw and real. There is no Photoshop, no airbrushing. Street photography, in essence, captures a time and place in its truest form. When looking at street photographs from any time period from the late 1800s until now, we can learn about the daily lives of common folks. This art of street photography gives us a real glimpse into the human condition. Powerful photographs often leave a lasting impression on us. If I think of the Great Depression of 1930’s America, I often recall Dorothea Lange’s photo titled Migrant Mother. In it, we see a photo of a very worried mother cradling two children who have their faces buried into her shoulders. If I think of World War II and the American troops coming home, I am often reminded of Alfred Eisenstaedt’s V-J Day in Times Square, where an American sailor can be seen kissing a girl in a white dress. These street photographs stick with us over the years, for they come to represent a place and time in history. Street photographs capture a decisive moment in time. They tell a story, and they purely portray an event, a movement, a decade or a generation. The street photographer is able to
