I am 25 years old woman from Finland and I study textiledesign in Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. As a designer my inspiration intrinsically comes from rugged and wild nature of Lappland. Designing textiles and products I appreciate multipurpose and long-lasting designs with small details. In my works, I use natural materials for example leather and linen.

Kntting is like a meditation to me. I have always some kind of knitting project going on. From left: Knitted and felted backbag, whic was a school project. I knitted, felted, and sewed it by hands and used recycled leather for straps and other details. Below: Knitted small, colorfull pouch for hard drive, grey scarf and baby planket and machine knitted scarf where you can see my design pattern “Kaarna.

One of our courses at school was a machine knitting course where we had to explore patterned knitting. We also needed to desing knit pattern for indutrial knitting machine and those designs were knitted by Kutomo Holopainen. I designed “Kaarna” whic is is douple knitted and made of merino wool and alpaca yarn. I am planing to take part in “FinVillage Suomi kertoo neuloen” competition where you need to design and manufacture a complete outfit of knitted pieces using wool as a main material. I had a few ideas and one of them was underwear kind of outfit with bodysuit and long cardigan. Eventually I choose a long dress with long slits and collar including shorts made of the same fabric.

I enjoy doing all kinds of handcrafts. To name a few I like knitting, crocheting, handweaving, weaving with looms, making small products from leather and jewellery making.

All these bags are designed and sewed by me. The black backbag was a school project and it’s made of old leather jacket. The brown was old leather skirt. The white clutch is made of faux fur. I have photographed these products in a studio.

Left: Loom weaved rug made of old t-shirts. Right: Piece of jaquardweaved fabric. Below: Pieces of weaved fabric tests. Middle row are weaved by factory looms and it is called “Lapin Kettu”.

I also do photography and I mostly take pictures from nature and landscapes. I can use SLR camera and studio with its lights. I know how to use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, DesignKnitt and Weave Point programs. I haven’t yet found my style in print design. I like to do simple patterns and use contrast in my works. Somehow all of them involves nature.

When I was in vocational school back in 2010 as a finla year project, I made an exhibition called “Journey to poweranimal”, in which I studied shamanism. That was an extension to my earlier school project (“The Shaman and Raven” painting is from that). In this project, I made realistic sized human statue “Erkki- shaman” and realistic wolf statue from wire, paper mache and gypsum. The exhibition is about a moment when Erkki is calling his power animal and the wolf has heard it and has come to him. I also made 100cm x 120cm painting of that wolf who just heard the calling of the drum.

I have made a leather case for knife and Shaman drum for my godson. That drawing is from our drawing and painting course, where we first needed to pick an architecture spot to explore the lights and shadows. After that we had to draw inspiration from our earlier drawings from that course and add those details to the space.
