SUSTAIN YOUR STYLE,

Shop Your Closet BY JILLIAN NESBITT PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78 12

MINT Westman

We all love a new piece of clothing but how often do we find that we wear it once or twice and then it falls to the back of our closet by the next season? This edition we’re breaking that cycle by showing you how to make old pieces feel like new again. All clothing was styled from either my or the models’ closets.

classy but make it sassy. Wanting to look put together + professional but also stylish? Wanting to try a new trend but not feel completely out of place? Take your classic pieces + pair them with a trendier piece.

CLASSIC: wrap dress (they will never go out of style)

+

TREND: over the knee boots worn with a longer hemline.

CLASSIC: dress shirt + trouser pant

+

TREND: long vest + knotted headband

textures, textures, textures How to keep an outfit simple yet sophisticated? More textures, less trends. I am a big fan of a monochromatic look and the best way to add interest to this look is to add texture. Cass is wearing a knit pencil skirt paired with a “shaggy top + basic nude pumps. Stef is ultra feminine in her long fan style skirt + a cotton sweater of the same colour. The double leather belt really brings this look together. Belts are back + are such a flattering way to show off your shape, good thing they kept this belt around! 14

MINT Westman

camel, cozy + chic: outerwear Camel is such a luxurious colour. Polish off the everyday sweater dress + boots look by adding a structured blazer + a trendy headband; or feel effortlessly chic by adding a longline camel coat to almost any outfit‌ you can never go wrong with all white, especially AFTER Labor Day. MINT Westman

15

Set life Or so it looks... how to get the very trendy set look without buying a new set? Sets are everywhere and I can’t get enough of them but if you’re on a budget + aren’t able to invest in one at the moment, here’s how you get the look: pair similar colour + fabric.

We found these snakeskin pants and snakeskin duster blouse in one closet - the same shade, same fabric, and super similar print leaves us with this pajamas chic set look. The second look is a structured jumpsuit, the belt sinching the middle is not only flattering, it also breaks up the onepiece subtly. I also love how the tied heels give a feminine meets masculine vibe to the outfit. 16

MINT Westman

NYE What better way to celebrate the new year then feeling good with friends. This is a time for you to pull out your favorite frock, suit, or dressed up #ootd, pop some bubbly + celebrate.

You can go dramatic like Cass’s sleek black fitted asymmetrical gown or fun like Stef’s ‘70s inspired champagne wide-legged romper. New Year’s is a night where anything goes - from sweats + Chinese food to formal + champagne. You do you + celebrate the new year too.

BENEFITS OF

Juice Cleansing BY WHEAT CITY JUICE CO

Fasting is the willful abstinence from food. For more than five thousand years, fasting has been used as a healthy method of weight loss, a powerful tool for cleaning, flushing, detoxifying and maintaining the body and healing illnesses. When we eat, all of our body’s energy goes toward digesting, using and storing the food, and eliminating waste. When we don’t eat, all of our body’s energy goes toward cleaning house. We absorb toxic chemicals from food, drinks and the environment. Our body eliminates some of these through waste, but the rest remain as chemical by-products and free radicals which contribute to aging, heart disease and cancer. Fasting gets rid of these toxins. It also increases our blood’s

white cell count which boosts immunity and protects us from disease and since fasting is better for the circulatory system you can expect better skin, hair and nails. Fasts can last anywhere from 24 hours to 5 days. It’s all up to you how light, clean and healthy you want to get. In a juice fast you only consume fresh pressed juice. Whether its fruit juice, veggie or both, the enzymes are wonderful aides in the cleansing process. The alkalizing properties of the juices help to neutralize the toxins being released from the body. Fasts are challenging, both physically and mentally. Do not expect it to be easy, especially at the beginning when you find yourself salivating over foods you don’t normally even care about. Eventually you get to a place where you are not hungry and you feel light, pure and clean.

TOYMASTERS OFFERS THE HOTTEST TOYS FOR 2019 Celebrating 6 Years of Helping You Find The Perfect Gift. BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

hen Lori Carlisle was growing up in Souris, Manitoba, you could find her swimming in the park, playing sports or spending time at her relative’s farms around the animals. Years later, she is still using that childhood energy to run Toymasters, Brandon’s only locally owned specialty toy store.

W

“In my late 20s I was thinking about starting my own business while raising my kids. In 2012 the right idea came along when I heard A Child’s Place in the mall was closing. This was going to leave Brandon and the surrounding area without a toy store to buy higher quality toys and leave children without the experience of shopping in an actual toy store,” explained Lori. Toymasters officially opened its doors in October 2013 and to much anticipation, they exceeded sales projections. Lori continued to put in extra hours wearing every hat in the business to ensure Toymasters was a success while she took care of her family. The growth of the business has allowed Lori to expand with renovations and hire more help to improve the store. “I’m already seeing positive changes; the new team is excited to kick off the Christmas season and help our customers pick out the perfect gifts for all ages. We are also planning to hold game nights and puzzle contests coming in 2020,” told Lori. Being a locally owned business in Brandon has allowed Lori the luxury of complete hands-on control in everything from the creative aspect, the inventory, and most importantly, that all the profits stay in the community Lori loves. “It feels great being able to create new local jobs. It supports local business and we donate back to charities and help with fundraising,” said Lori excitedly. Toymasters just celebrated its 6th anniversary with a big sale, and customers flocked to the store to show their

support. Being locally owned, Toymasters can specifically select their inventory because its customers value quality and great customer service. “One of the biggest issues customers face with many toys sold at big mass stores is that they are always out of stock. We solve that problem and make it easy to always find a great gift. I’ve rarely met a child who doesn’t fall in love with a few toys in-store that they’ve never even seen on commercials,” said Lori proudly. Loris’s success with Toymasters was not something that just fell in her lap, she gives the credit of her business knowledge and work ethic to her mom Phyllis, who ran Jerry’s Foodmart in Souris, and her Uncle David “Bunk” Inkster who farmed and was Reeve of the R.M. of Oakland. “I got an early start and have always loved working in retail. I watched my parents firsthand and saw the stamina, work ethic, and discipline required to start and run a retail business. My Uncle taught me integrity, the freedom that comes with being self-employed, and helping your community,” said Lori. With Christmas right around the corner, Lori and the team at Toymasters is ready and excited to help every customer find that perfect gift. “To this day, it doesn’t get old hearing a child walk into the store for the first time with energetic excitement and hear them say, “WOW!” When watching their curiosity as they explore the different toys, I’m not sure who enjoys it more... the little ones or the parents?” gleamed Lori.

MYPHONE Staying Connected For A New Generation BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

For 31 years, John Falloon has been an integral part of the telecom and computer technology industry throughout the Westman Region with his company, Myphone. John was always a salesperson at heart and began his career in computer sales and was involved in grassroots internet. Since the inception of Myphone in 1988, John has built the company into a chain of stores in Brandon and Virden. Executing on key opportunities is a major part of any business growing and thriving, and with Myphone’s recent acquisition of Juggernaut Computers, Myphone is bigger and stronger than ever. Enter John’s daughter and Managing Partner Samantha Falloon, and Director of Operations, Lisa Rowley. Both women are Co-Owners and are leading the charge when it comes to taking Myphone into the new decade. The biggest, most exciting thing that has happened recently is that we have acquired Juggernaut Computers. We’ve had a good long-running relationship with Juggernaut Computers. We have known the owner Mo Nor Addin for a long time. The evolution of wireless is I.o.T, and we’re seeing that a lot more with everything, so it made sense to get ahead of the curve and be able to support the end-user with that knowledge on our side,” explained Samantha.

(I.o.T. stands for The Internet of Things and can transfer data among networks without human interaction. Examples include wireless sensor networks or home and building automation.) Since the acquisition on September 1, 2019, both Myphone and Juggernaut Computers have been working to understand each other’s businesses in order to streamline the process of selling services and products, while also helping their customers with their I.T. solutions, a process that Samantha says is all about the in-house marriage for the two sides of the businesses.

“We are starting to assimilate our businesses while working it in with our sales teams. Plus, it fits nicely with our business model, for companies that need I.T. support along with their communication needs. We are finding ways we can improve the processes and efficiencies to best marry the two companies together, so customers only have to deal with one company for all their needs,” told Samantha. Juggernaut Computers owner Mo Nor Addin has also enjoyed the acquisition process and has been over the moon with how Myphone has applied his company into their business. “With help from Lisa and Sam, everything has gone smoothly. They have made it easy to soak into their system with a streamlined process,” said Mo. Mo Nor Addin was born and raised in Saudi Arabia and came over to Winnipeg in 2004 to study English. Mo quickly found a passion for computers and started studying Computer System Technology. After years of hard work Mo ended up becoming the owner of Juggernaut Computers and buying the whole company. With the new acquisition, Mo has transitioned over to Myphone as Head Tech Manager.

“I believe every opportunity is a good opportunity. I’ve worked with Samantha and Lisa for a while. I’m glad to have someone buy the company that I know and trust,” said Mo sincerely. Samantha and Lisa were born and raised in Brandon, Manitoba. They met at University of Manitoba where they were studying business and became friends soon after. Samantha being John’s daughter was naturally interested in eventually taking over from her father to keep the family business in house. Both Samantha and Lisa started their way from the bottom and worked their way up to their respective positions with Myphone after they returned home from university. Samantha works as Managing Partner which means she oversees the Outbound Sales Team, and newly founded I.T. Division and much more. Lisa is Director of Operations and handles the finances, bookkeeping, billing, and the back end of Myphone’s sales system. Since Samantha has taken over the day to day operations of Myphone, her father John is keeping busy and has taken on projects in the office, including helping Mo in the I.T. Division to help grow the companies tech. At 66 years old, John is still hustling and has the energy of a man half his age!

“My dad has been full of advice since I could remember. He raised me to be confident in myself. He was always okay with my opinion being different than his as long as I had justification for it. He supported me and allowed me to grow without telling me how to do it,” said Samantha proudly. When it comes to supporting Brandon and the Westman Region, Myphone, along with the help from Telus, who they’re a dealership for on the telecom side of the business, have a long-lasting relationship in giving back to the community. Myphone has taken the Telus mandate, “the give where you live” approach when it comes to their region. They are involved in the Brandon Youth Soccer Association, and Brandon Minor Hockey. Along with being large supporters in the YWCA. In Virden, Myphone are supporters of The Virden Oil Kings, and The Virden Rodeo, along with many others throughout the Westman Region. “We know without the community we live in; we wouldn’t be able to have the business that we do. So, give where we live is the root of our business,” said Samantha. Myphone is grateful for how Telus has worked with them so diligently on community matters with the Future Friendly Foundation. Telus donates cellphones to foster kids once they

age out of their programs. They also donate to Children’s Hospitals, Children’s Foundation, and are big supporters of United Way Brandon. Telus also has a community board where any local organization can apply to get funding. As young owners and young women in business, Samantha and Lisa are proud of how Telus takes initiative when it comes to women in tech, youth in sports, and foster children. “We are proud to say that we are Telus. It was very reassuring to be partnered with someone who genuinely cared as much as we did when it came to the community,” exuberantly shared Samantha.

PRECISION TOYOTA Celebrating 40 Years BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

December 3, 1979. That’s when Ron Ball officially became the owner of the Brandon Toyota Dealership. hile growing up on a family cattle farm, Ron also worked for a septic business. In the winter, business was less plentiful and Ron started selling cars for the local Brandon Toyota Dealership. One year later Ron opened a used car dealership of his own called Ron’s Wheel Estate. Ron’s right-hand man Ken Campbell started working for Ron as a car washer at Ron’s Wheel Estate. Ken worked his way up through every department to become General Manager, and a Partner.

Anniversary as a dealership with a brand-new state of the art building at the same location. Scott along with Ken’s son Jordan, who is a Sales Manager, will take Precision Toyota into the new decade in style. “The new building is beautiful. We moved in September 16, 2019. Three times bigger than it used to be, it’s a big change but we did it for our people, and to be able to give our guests the best experience possible when they allow us to earn their business,” explained Scott. The new building is completely interactive, easier for customers to navigate. Now a big city dealership with

Ron is officially retiring, and with the new building, it’s a big part of an evolving company. Building Precision Toyota from the ground up, he is proud of his staff, the people of Westman and his clients who have helped him sustain it. “When I was younger, I had no formal education. The growth of what we did came from street smarts. I was able to surround myself with some great people. What we have now is something I never would have dreamed of. Scott has taught me a lot also. It’s hard for someone who’s been around a long time, Scott has helped with absorbing changes and helping everyone keep an open mind,” shared Ron. Scott has been General Manager for 10 years. Learning a lot from his father, and Ken Campbell. Less when it comes to selling cars, more so creating lifelong relationships with people. “My father is a good man who cares about his staff and their well-being. He’s gained a lot of respect, because of how he treated people over the years, and that’s no different with Ken. He’s stuck by my father’s side for 40+ years. There’s a lot of respect within these 4 walls. They have both been very good mentors.” said Scott wholeheartedly.

Ron’s legacy is the work he and his dealership have contributed to the Westman Region - Brandon Wheat King sponsor since 1981 and helping create Westman Dreams for Kids. Ron and Precision Toyota are involved with minor hockey, youth soccer and many local charities. “It’s important to give back to the community. We’ve been fortunate to live a good life. We’ve built and donated an office for Westman Dreams for Kids in the dealership for them to work out of. It’s just the right thing to do,” said Ron admirably. In retirement, Ron is still hanging out at the dealership and has a new office to go with the building. “Scott is President and General Manager, my son Tyler in the Parts Department, and my daughter Angie runs Westman Dreams for Kids. I’m going to kick back and let them run the show,” insisted Ron.

NEW VOCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Offers Hands-On Experience to Career Connections Members BY HUNTER PLOSZAY

For over 45 years Career Connections in Brandon, Manitoba has provided preemployment training, interview preparation, and career decision support for people with disabilities. Career Connections is now educating participating members with hands-on experience in the new Vocational Development Program which uses the PAES Program (Practical-Assessment-Exploration-System). he new PAES Program includes 268 boxes, each box containing a different job. Each job contains step by step directions on how to complete the task with minimum and maximum industry standards. That’s one of the reasons Career Connections can be so confident in sending their participants into the workforce. They have trained for the jobs that they are entering and continuing to grow their skills as workers and as people. Executive director Tracy Williams’s vision of an all-inclusive workforce is more obtainable now than ever.

T

“It’s been an idea in my head for 12-13 years. I always wanted a program where we could directly train individuals. There’s a need for the traditional day program, but I just think there are a lot of people that don’t have to be there because they have so much more ability than that,” said Williams. Take Corey for example – Corey is a man in his 40s. He has been attending the traditional day program. Corey then began training in the PAES Program, attending one day a week. Now he is training up to three days a week and realizing his potential in the workforce. “It feels like a real job when I work here, I would recommend the program to other people,” said Corey with an ear to ear grin. While participants train in the program, not only are they picking up real work skills, but they are gaining the confidence and realization that they too can be successful members of the workforce. 44

MINT Westman

PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

“I believe there is a job for everybody. Given the right support and training, everybody has the ability,” said Williams. “The worst thing that is happening in this field is that we are doing for, and not doing with. So, a lot of people don’t even get an opportunity to try,” said program coordinator Grant Irvine. What separates the Vocational Development Program from any other, are the weekly tours twice a week where participants go to local businesses to learn firsthand about employment opportunities and requirements for employment. Even though this is a chance for the participants to experience a live workplace, it’s the business owners that are being educated. “We don’t go to businesses and say we have people we want you to take a look at hiring. We come to your business and see what you do, see what your values are. Those employers then see their abilities and offer them positions or ask for resumes. There are huge benefits to hiring people with disabilities,” said Williams. Career Connections is an integral part of the community of Brandon, and their reach stretches throughout all of South Western Manitoba. There is work for anyone, they just need the opportunity to be trained properly and gain the confidence to understand they don’t have to work just an entry-level job. Nobody understands that better than Tracy Williams and Career Connections. “I believe there is a job for everybody. Given the right support and training, everybody has the ability,” said Williams. MAKE AN IMPACT –

Charitable Donations

BY PRAIRIE WEALTH PLANNING CONSULTANTS

As the holiday season approaches, we often find ourselves reflecting on our good fortune and how to make an impact on our community. Involving family members in charitable planning can be rewarding and instill a sense of philanthropy in children and grandchildren.

As you create lasting family legacies this holiday season consider a few philanthropic strategies.

beneficiary, most - if not all - of the tax on the owner’s final tax return can be offset by the credit generated by the donation.

MAXIMIZE YOUR LEGACY

If you own non-registered investments, such as stocks or mutual funds, consider donating them directly, or in-kind, to charity rather than selling them first and then donating the cash. When you sell an investment to make a cash donation you pay tax on 50% of the investment gain. However, a direct donation of the investment in-kind to a registered charity results in no capital gain. The charity receives the same value either way, but you save the tax.

In any given year, up to 75% of your net income may be donated to charity. That increases to 100% in the year you pass away. Building charitable giving into your estate plan supports your favourite causes long after you’re gone. A qualified financial planner can help estimate your potential tax bill, and present options to reallocate dollars otherwise earmarked for CRA to charities of your choice; up to 100% of your income.

RRSP AND RRIF BENEFICIARY Consider including charities as a beneficiary on your RRSP or RRIF accounts. When a qualified charity is named

46

MINT Westman

DONATE SECURITIES IN-KIND

GIVE YOUR DONATION A BOOST When it comes to charitable giving, life insurance can be a very effective tool to leave an even bigger impact to the causes you care about.

Naming a charity as beneficiary on your insurance policy means the charity can issue a tax receipt for the full amount of death benefit when received; also significantly lowering your final tax bill.

• want to create a legacy that perpetually supports charities

Another method is to transfer the ownership of a policy to a charity during your lifetime and continue to make the premium payments. In this case, the charity still receives the death benefit, but you get a charitable receipt for the amount of premium each year. Both approaches can be effective.

These platforms act like an intermediate charity and are designed to facilitate charitable giving. The end beneficiaries can range from large national charities to small local community groups.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Donor Advised Fund programs are making it easier for average families to create charitable legacy accounts akin to private foundations. They are designed for those who: • want to give, but don’t know which charities to support • don’t feel comfortable leaving a large irrevocable amount to just one cause

• don’t have the resources to manage their own private foundation

Other family members can donate to the family legacy account and receive a donation credit. Some families even use their legacy account to create new annual holiday traditions – where every family member chooses a charitable cause each year, sharing their stories as they gather for the holidays. Consult with a Certified Financial Planner to build an effective charitable giving strategy that fits your family’s unique values and make the most of the holiday spirit.
