Editor’s Favourites

WELCOME TO OUR NEW LOOK MINTY. Are you loving our new design? I certainly am. I’m not going to lie. After the mammoth year that was 2017, this year I wanted to take some time to reflect on Minty Magazine, and exactly what it is becoming. I defined its true mission and direction (you can read all about it on page 13), concentrated on creating and sharing unique content, and took the plunge with a new look for the magazine. I couldn’t be happier with the result. It’s no surprise that taking this time to think and plan has resulted in this issue being incredibly close to my heart. I don’t think I am alone in feeling it can be a tough ride at times. 2018 has seen many well-loved businesses close their doors, national brands pivot to a new direction, and many social media accounts take on a new, more relaxed vibe. I felt compelled to share the story of Kerryann Carroll, who has made this change on social media with great success. Advice from our friend Kate Pascoe Squires on slowing down serves as a beautiful reminder that we don’t have to do it all. Perhaps we can achieve boundless success by working less and playing more?

Marmalade Lion Cockatoo Activity Mat $164.00 marmaladelion.com.au Tried and tested in my own home, the Marmalade Lion products are so durable, easy to wash and look amazing. This playmat is a favourite we use every day.

Sustainability is a priority for us here at Minty. I am so pleased to express this through our stunning cover, our Sustainable Style feature and our comprehensive Shopping Guide. I hope it inspires you try some new brands that are doing things right for our future. Finally, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for supporting Minty and purchasing this issue. Please continue to support small, support local and support sustainable Australian design. Together we can make a difference.

As it happens, playing more is something I am quite ok with! What fun we had shooting our Let’s Play feature, which is paired with a meaningful piece written by Dr Kathryn Bown on the benefits of play and quality resources. This is us, me and my beautiful kids on the opposite page… ‘playing more’ on set.

Willow by the Sea Baby Oil $34.00 willowbythesea.com This baby oil is DIVINE. It is 100% organic so I am happy to use it every day on my baby girl. It is a firm favourite after bath time. Oh, and the packaging… simply stunning.

othing brings us more joy than inspiring people to create beautiful spaces for their children. Spaces that are thoughtfully designed to meet their children’s needs. Spaces created with care for sustainability and that support local businesses and artisans. Spaces that make their children feel safe, allowing them to play and learn for years to come. We produce a printed and digital magazine, a vibrant blog, and invaluable design resources to support our readers’ journey through design. We collaborate with local brands to create engaging and beautiful content through our Co.Lab initiative. We are a community of like-minded people who passionately support and grow the Australian design industry together.

Our Core Team

Nicole Ray, Editor Minty is my calling. I first stumbled upon it whilst on maternity leave with my son. I knew I couldn’t return to my fast-paced role in event management with my growing family, so when the opportunity to take on Minty came up, I trusted my gut and jumped in head first. I have never looked back. I could never have imagined my project management experience from the event world would manifest like this. I have been able to draw from my experience of marketing international sporting events, extensive stakeholder management, and the endless press releases written as a publicity manager at Oxford University Press, in my role as Editor for Minty. Exacting the intricate details of group incentive travel is surprisingly similar to proofing the magazine. Who knew?!

It’s an honour and a pleasure to curate this platform to support local Australian businesses. Minty is one-of-a-kind and I feel compelled to keep it thriving. I’m always delighted to receive submissions and share the incredible rooms designed for our children. I love working with our team to create spaces that inspire our readers. I am a mother of two. Coastal walks keep me sane. Travel inspires me. Meaningful friendships ignite my soul. I practice gratitude. I embrace learning and upskill at every opportunity. My work is heart-centered. I make considered choices and take pride in my values. I love where life has taken me, I couldn’t ask for more.

Francoise Baudet, Photographer Growing up in a family of architects, I’ve always had a strong appreciation of design and how it works with nature and affects our lifestyle. I thrive on this interplay.

I particularly love to support local, small and authentic brands and designers. I have a soft spot for architects and interiors designers, as they can take a space beyond imaginable. An interior sings when it is used every day and influences those who pass through it. I hope to share that magic in my images. I have two small children and balance my work around them. I, of course, adore Minty and feel so grateful that I get to work with such a talented and inspiring team showcasing some incredible, innovative and down-right beautiful Australian designers and makers. When I’m not working or with the kids, you can find me at a yoga studio, on a bush walk or in the ocean. I am passionate about health and love hitting the local farmers’ markets or listening to a podcast or ten!

Madeline McFarlane, Stylist With a foundation in fashion design, I began my styling career working as a fashion stylist in London, collaborating with the likes of British Fashion Council, Time Magazine, Matches Fashion and a range of independent Fashion Houses for London and New York Fashion Weeks. In 2012, I followed the sunshine and relocated to Sydney, making a natural extension into styling lifestyle and interiors. I love to create. I approach all of my projects with an open and dedicated energy. I enjoy working with sustainable brands, and natural compositions. Working with Minty allows me to support smaller, Australian brands by bringing their products to life through editorial spreads. I am a greenie at heart, and find creative inspiration in the great outdoors. I am happiest travelling the world, scuba-diving, laughing with friends and belting out Whitney tunes. I am a passionate advocate for stylish living that minimises harmful impact on the environment.

P15

M I NT Y

After a decade of advertising and branding work in leading agencies, I yearned to use my creative skills and get closer to my roots. I then formally trained in photography and was lucky to have worked with some of Australia’s key architecture and interiors photographers. I also interned for the brilliant stylist and entrepreneur Megan Morton.

Did you know how easily you can make a difference?

DESIGNING ETHICAL SPACES FOR CHILDREN –

t’s now widely accepted that sustainability should be an important consideration in all aspects of our lives. But what does sustainability actually mean and how does it relate to children’s spaces and design? In a fast-paced world with an abundance of choices on offer, this starter guide will help you to make more educated choices about the products you bring into your home. Broadly, sustainable practices take into consideration how humans can live in harmony with the natural world by finding ways to protect the earth from damage as we go about drawing on its resources. For this issue of Minty, we focussed on creating a children’s bedroom that incorporated products that embraced sustainable practices, as well as being stylish additions to your home. After all, it’s our children’s future that depends on our choices in the here and now…

When furnishing a bedroom, the obvious place to start is with the super hero – the bed. Keep in mind the materials in the bed frame, mattress and manchester when making sustainable decisions. We fell in love with this bedhead from Family Love Tree. It’s made from Rattan – fast growing, easy to harvest, and incredibly durable. When dressing your bed, always look for 100% natural fibre bed sheets. There are loads of great options out there. We decided to layer up some pretty linens. Not only is linen incredibly durable (it can last up to three decades), it’s also biodegradable and there are useful by-products from the flax plant such as linseed oil. Impressively, linen uses less water to grow than its cousin, cotton. We layered linen from In Bed, a company that does its best to be transparent about where their goods are made – an important factor to weigh in to your purchase decisions.

Finding the perfect rug for a children’s room can be tricky, and it’s often tempting to choose a synthetic material for ease of cleaning and enduring heavy traffic. However synthetic isn’t the only material that cleans easily and holds up against children’s intense use. We found this gem from Rug Culture that’s made of jute and recycled leather. Jute grows quickly, has a high carbon dioxide absorption and is biodegradable. And of course, recycled leather has obvious benefits including incredible durability. There are many businesses deferring to the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ philosophy, producing beautiful and unique pieces that also care for the world. Upcycling need not be left to the professionals. Why not source some second-hand pieces yourself to add some character to your children’s space? Op-shops can be a treasure trove of vintage wares that can be incorporated into contemporary design. We found some vintage cases and phones that make for a playful addition to the room. By upcycling pre-loved wares, we reduce landfill AND create unique spaces. P2 1

By shopping local not only do you support local business, you reduce shipping miles and the carbon footprint.

It does take some additional time and research to make sustainable choices. But every effort helps to reduce our impact on our children’s world. Let’s ensure that sustainability and style go hand-inhand – they really are a perfect match.

The finishing touches to a space are as important as the heroes. When looking for artwork try to shop local. Look for handmade, one-off pieces. If buying Australian Aboriginal art, ensure the purchase is ethical by checking the guide provided by the Association of Northern, Kimberley and Arnhem Aboriginal Artists (http://ankaaa.org.au/ publication/purchasing-aboriginal-art-ethical-buying-guide/). We loved the artwork by Charliesha Mung and handmade ceramics by Emma Gale. I MAG I NATIVE

HOW QUALITY RESOURCES FOSTER VALUABLE PLAY – “Play is the highest form of research.” - Albert Einstein

T

here’s a lot to be said about the value of play and playfulness in children’s lives. Play is considered to be the most effective avenue through which children learn and grow. It has value not only in the early years but right through later childhood. In fact, many argue that playfulness is an advantageous quality for adults, particularly for those working in innovative industries.

Through play, children make connections with existing knowledge, test out theories they have about the world, move their bodies and practice skills, interact with people and learn about relationships, and grow their understandings about themselves and who they are.

In addition to large blocks of uninterrupted time, children’s play can be supported by a range of different resources. First and foremost, the key adults in children’s lives are the most valuable resource for play. Spending time with your child by actually participating in the play, will enhance your child’s play experiences and scaffold your child’s learning. By engaging in the play, you will learn about your child’s interests, the materials and resources they are drawn to, and the kinds of play they engage with the most. By playing alongside your child, you are then able to make decisions about the kinds of materials and resources that will continue to enhance and extend your child’s play, specific to their needs and interests.

Play is therefore a particularly potent way for children to learn and it is why high-quality early childhood settings will ensure children are experiencing large blocks of uninterrupted play throughout the day. In fact, new theories of play coined the phrase ‘play based learning’, which is now commonly recognised best practice.

It’s quite amazing how quickly children respond positively to adult involvement and interest in their play pursuits. By being present and attentive, listening to your child’s cues and following their lead, you are best placed to strengthen your relationship and connection with your child. Playfulness in families is well established in the literature as a powerful method through which strong attachments can be developed and fortified.

P27

M I NT Y

So why is play beneficial? When children are immersed in imaginative, creative, in-depth episodes of play, they are able to generate new forms of learning. It is the most effective way to learn for young children in particular, because it is effortless and enjoyable. Children have an innate disposition to both play and learn, and often it’s actually quite difficult to separate the two.

How is play fostered? It is widely accepted that children’s deep learning often occurs when they are able to engage in play for extended blocks of time. This allows children to fully immerse themselves in a game, imaginative scenario or a more serious undertaking such as testing out theories.

M I NT Y

What resources and equipment enhance play? Resources made from natural materials that are sustainably and ethically sourced and made by reputable businesses are a great investment because they will stand the test of time as well as cater to young and older children, particularly if they are open ended. Open ended resources and materials have a range of different uses and purposes, encouraging children to use their imaginations and creativity to integrate them in their play. A large range of attractive indoor gross motor equipment, that has been traditionally reserved for early childhood settings, is now available to parents. Sourcing a few key pieces for a playroom or bedroom can be a great way to keep active bodies busy, especially if you live in an apartment or find it difficult to access outdoor spaces regularly. In addition to being designed to foster free self-directed movement and independent play, keep an eye out for high quality gross motor equipment that meets not just sustainability and ethical benchmarks, but has also been aesthetically designed.

Books are a staple for any childhood, as their impact is so broad and beneficial. First and foremost, books play a large role in helping children develop early literacy skills. From babyhood, parents can read to their children and know that this early exposure to pictures/images, text, narrative, spoken word and voice is the perfect context in which children begin to understand the functions of language and communication. Books can also provide the perfect springboard for children to then enact games, fairy tales and other dramatic play as they draw inspiration from the stories they are reading. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of bringing books into your home is the opportunity to connect with your child through the act of sharing a book together. Any other considerations when purchasing resources and equipment? What often goes hand-in-hand with ethical, sustainable and natural resources and equipment for children is that they are often also designed with beauty in mind. For children’s spaces, be it their bedrooms or playrooms, to be designed with an equal consideration for beauty and aesthetics, functionality, learning, playfulness and joy, brings the final dimension of respect for children to the brief.

With Kerryann Carroll STYLING KERRYANN CARROLL PHOTOGRAPHY FRANÇOISE BAUDET WORDS NICOLE RAY

EARLIER THIS YEAR, KERRYANN CARROLL MADE A BOLD STATEMENT ON HER POPULAR INTERIOR STYLING INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT. It was a message to her followers explaining her new calling to focus on health, wellness and family. She explained that her passion for product styling and photography had dwindled and had been replaced with a craving for nourishing family time. Kerryann concluded “I hope you can continue to follow us on this new journey, but I won’t be disheartened if you don’t. We have so much in front of us to focus on than just an app!”. This post resonated strongly. Aren’t we all guilty of spending a lot of time on social media, and often at the expense of time spent with our loved-ones?

P3 4

I continued to follow Kerryann on her newly renamed account @_soulsista_ and was delighted and inspired by her resolve. The vibe changed. It was relaxed and loving. It drew me to want to know more about this new stance on social media. It was such a pleasure to visit Kerryann in her beautiful home. I met her supportive husband, Jakob and danced Baby Shark with her delightful children, Talen and Madden. Seeing her insta feed IRL, I was struck with how honest and authentic it has become. There is nothing fake on that grid. Kerryann’s home and family are exactly as they appear…relaxed, warm and welcoming. Oh, and let’s not forget, incredibly stylish!

I always have a candle burning to help bring the energy into the house and a sense of calm. WHAT ARE YOUR ‘MUST-HAVES’ IN A NURSERY? Books, wooden toys, a cosy rug for their little feet and something that plays a little bit of soft music. WHAT SCARED YOU MOST ABOUT TRANSITIONING TALAN OUT OF HIS NURSERY INTO HIS TODDLER ROOM? I don't think I was really ever scared, more emotional that my baby wasn't a baby anymore. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN’S GORGEOUS ROOMS? I love that they're both a natural, learning space that is going to grow with them as they get older. A place for their own individual personalities to use their imaginations. DO YOU HAVE A PHILOSOPHY AROUND TOYS FOR THE BOYS? Yes! I adore having wooden toys for both boys. Not only are they timeless pieces that are most of the time, hand made, but they allow the kids to use their imaginations and be creative. They also last longer than plastic, and we are helping the environment which is a massive tick in our books.

M I NT Y

YOU RECENTLY MADE A STATEMENT ON YOUR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT, MOVING AWAY FROM PURELY INTERIOR STYLING. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW DIRECTION? I had to learn how to take a step back on social media and focus on what’s really important in our lives. I got so caught up in social media that it was affecting my relationship with not only my family but with friends too. I think this is a pretty common thing to happen to influencers unfortunately. I really had to try and find balance with social media and also find out who I was again as well. I'm still in the learning process and I think I will continue to learn for a while yet. What I do know is that pictures are just a moment captured in a split second.

Family is so important to me as well as helping our souls grow into better people. Teaching our children the more important things in life is a priority. Sharing what makes me happy and not worrying about followers or likes was a big step I took. I’m so much happier now. Just keeping life simple, fun and exciting. Making memories as a family and giving our children the best life.

Slow Down Mama BY KATE PASCOE SQUIRES

W

hat the…? Did I actually just use the words ‘slow down’ in conjunction with ‘mama’? Impossible. Well at least very tricky. I know even the earthiest of mothers have an issue with taking it slow. It doesn’t matter what our personal philosophy is, slow is pretty much the opposite of what our babies and children demand. Aren’t we meant to love having and doing it all whilst breastfeeding exclusively, brewing our own bone broth, saying goodbye to our baby bodies, smashing through the glass ceiling at work and enjoying a healthy social life? I don’t know about you, but I find it all exhausting. I want it all – to be the earth mother, the working mother, the fit mother, the social mother – but, in another more accurate way, I don’t want any of it. At least not all at once.

Taking all of this into account, pardon my French, how the hell do we slow it down? I know a fourday meditation retreat in Byron would be nice, but it’s probably not going to happen right now. So, we have to steal moments. This is key. A moment? Yes. A moment. This is going to sound basic, but take a long, deep breath. And another. It feels so good. Sometimes we forget to breathe properly and our body is screaming for more oxygen. You can do this any time throughout the day. And the best thing? Your kids won’t even notice. There’s a whole lot of science behind this, but all you need to know right now is that it will make you feel better.

Next? Stop comparing. A very wise friend once told me ‘comparison is the thief of joy’ and right she was. I personally find this the most difficult of all. Why is everyone achieving so much? Why does everyone have amazing careers? Why does everyone have a six pack? Truth? They don’t. Social media makes it appear so, but we all know the deal by now – at least in theory. Everyone shows exactly what they want to show, mostly the highlight reel. There is nothing wrong with a good scroll every now and then (or every feed), but if it starts to make you feel crap – put the phone down. Unfollow. Look at what you have – like, really have – and feel appreciative and appreciated. Because you are. Finally, any time that you do have outside of the kids, the house, your work – spend it connecting with people. Your friends. Real friends. Who know you. Don’t worry about the state of your house, open your door and let people in. Meet for a quick chai. Go for a walk together with the babies in their prams or kids on scooters. Share witching hour with your bestie and her kids – open that bottle of wine and don’t feel guilty about it. The slightly foggy head in the morning will be worth it. I promise. Mothering is a marathon, not a sprint, and I think we need to be prepared for that. I honestly thought I was ‘done’ when my first started to sleep through the night. But with a now 6- and 8-year-old, things ain’t getting any easier. Sure, I’m not having to feed them through the night or shush them to sleep anymore – they can actually put their own pjs on and brush their own teeth (sometimes) – but their emotional needs are exponentially increasing. So. Many. Emotions. And my mum tells me this never stops. So how tired are we going to be when our kids are 40?

Now, you know that little voice that runs in your head all day, every day? If it’s telling you anything other than ‘you’re wonderful’, turn it off. For the new mamas, you’ve literally just grown a human in your belly. Even if you don’t manage anything productive today, you’re done. For the others, did you manage to get your kids to school in clothes? Congratulations. You’re done too. Anything else achieved is the cream on top. You are amazing.

Her business, Concrete and Honey is renowned for producing fresh and concise imagery for local businesses, as well as photographing interiors, creating window displays and designing beautiful spaces that little and big people alike love to be in. Mother of two beautiful girls, Maiya and Piper, Nicola’s passion to create has naturally extended to her own home, and her girls’ beautiful rooms. What strikes me about Nicola is her incredible resourcefulness. Nicola is able to create magazine worthy rooms on a budget by thinking outside of the box. Her willingness to repurpose existing pieces and search the second-hand shops for vintage treasures is inspirational. MAIYA'S ROOM Maiya is a bright, loving, strong willed little person who loves eating and sleeping. Nicola wanted to give Maiya a room that was all her own. A room that reflected her personality and allowed her space to play. After hearing of a flood affected home in Brisbane that cunningly painted the walls to the flood line, Nicola was inspired to do the same. Conscious to avoid pink, Nicola chose Taubmans Windy Willow to go from the ground up around the entire room including the skirting and the door. The Anthropologie Meadowfield wallpaper was always a must after first seeing it used by Kelli Murray (@ kelli_murray) on Instagram. Nicola renovated the existing built-in wardrobe, adding HK Living Button Wall Hooks as handles – a pure stroke of genius. From there, Nicola introduced the Bloomingville Mini rectangular desk and stool for colouring. The Bekan Spice Racks from Ikea were painted and installed as shelves. Nicola moved the Pottery Barn

Kids kitchen from Piper’s room into Maiya’s room, giving it a second life. The trusty Sundvik cot from Ikea proved a perfectly neutral base for the Konges Sloejd Etoile Junior Bedding. The Ilka Ethellyn Fawn by Vanessa Byrne was the first thing Nicola ever bought Maiya and hangs proudly on the wall. Nicola’s biggest challenges came from, and were resolved by, the play kitchen. “Initially I was worried about how much room the kitchen takes up, but it actually stores a lot of Maiya’s toys.” It also covers a small area of the wall missing wallpaper due to a slight under-order. The room is a light-filled, uplifting place to be. It’s no surprise Maiya can spend hours in there playing with her kitchen and enjoying her toys.

PIPER'S ROOM

Resourceful as ever, Nicola painted the Ikea Tarva single bed grey and added the Numero 74 Canopy in Powder Pink to add a touch of luxury. The bedding, a Liewood Dot Sweet Rose Single Bed Set and a CAM CAM Signature Junior Bed Quilt in Rose, are beautifully finished with a Collette Bream Star Cushion. Dulux Pianissimo half strength was used on the wall beside the bed, and Dulux Pianissimo to create the desk area. Speaking of the desk area, this DIY project by Nicola is an absolute winner. It houses all of Piper’s craft and nik naks in one perfectly styled nook. I mean, the washi tape rack… do we really need to say any more? The Micke Desk and Skadis Peg Board were both sourced from IKEA. Storage can be an issue in this room, with just the one freestanding wardrobe. However, as Nicola explains “I like that it makes me strict about keeping down the clutter”.

The wardrobe is a vintage piece from The Salvos, lovingly restored by Nicola. The suitcase was found on the side of the road and repainted. The mini blue cane pram was another second-hand vintage piece. This room is such an incredible example of how you don’t need a huge budget to create a magazine-worthy space. Just a vision, a little patience and a little elbow grease. It would be amiss of me not to mention the ballet zone. The barre from Harlequin Floors adorned with Tutu Du Monde ballet slippers backed by a full-length mirror is jaw-dropping. The fact that this was installed on Christmas Eve as Piper slept just adds to the romance. This room is so jam-packed with unique and personal features it’s hard to pick a favourite. When we asked Nicola, her reply truly summed up the essence of this space. Simply, “Piper’s room is filled with all the things she loves, lots of books and her favourite colours and a few little zones to keep her busy drawing, dancing, reading or playing on the floor”.

Piper’s room has evolved over time. Since moving from the nursery (now her sister’s room) Nicola has tweaked the space as required to suit her creative, passionate and bubbly five-year-old.

HARVEY IS YOUR TYPICAL FOUR -YEAROLD FUN - LOVING PRE - SCHOOLER with a love for music, cars and nerf guns, but his bedroom is far from typical.

T

he designer behind the bedroom is Harvey’s mum, Nat Wheeler, co-founder of norsu interiors. Norsu Interiors is a boutique that brings a wide variety of unique and affordable art prints and wares to Australian homes, supported by the newly established norsuHOME, a home styling service.

For Nat, the design of Harvey’s room began with the stunning Spanish Olive paint colour by Dulux. Dulcet sage green tones are the absolute inspiration and foundation of Harvey’s bedroom. The colour worked well to meet Nat’s own brief of not creating a ‘typical’ boy’s room. Her focus was to create a calm space for a young boy, where the atmosphere allows him to spend time relaxing and playing.

Whilst sunlight may have been one of the key elements in creating the restful mood of the room, it also proved to be one of the biggest headaches during the design phase. Harvey’s room was blessed with a huge window spanning along almost the entire length of the exterior wall, however its size made it difficult to arrange the placement of critical large furniture pieces, such as a desk and wardrobe. In the end, the decision was made to reposition the entire window to ensure the room was functional and practical. With the room foundations sorted, Nat shifted focus to her favourite (and more fun) part of the room - the wall furnishings. An eclectic mix of different furnishings for the wall were chosen that managed to challenge the traditional formula for children’s rooms but connect with Harvey’s interests and creativity.

Building upon the wall colour, pale greys and subtle blues were incorporated into the room to create a cohesive and calming colour palette. To enhance the zen, beautiful natural timber elements were added along with different textures and loads of sunlight. The ‘genuinely calming feel’ is one of Nat’s favourite parts of the room.

The focus was to create a calm space for a young boy, where the atmosphere allows him to spend time relaxing and playing.

The walls feature quirky art prints from Norsu, a fun neon light from Electric Confetti, and a Honey Honey wall hanging. When these elements are teamed with the VJ panelling on the opposing wall, the space is filled with so much character and personality. Carrying on the calming yet distinctive design aesthetic, the rest of Harvey’s room was treated to all sorts of unexpected fun wares from the Amigos de Hoy Joanie Tambourine, to the Livly Luna Pop Star Light, to the downright practical, such as the Cullin Design Bench Seat, perfect

for snuggling up with a book (or putting you centre stage of your own rock concert – sorry mum), to the HK living Single Door Cabinet, perfect for stowing away the not-so-calming little boy treasures! When it comes to designing children’s spaces, Nat’s number one tip is “don’t assume you need to design a room that feels completely childlike. Design a room that will have longevity and stand the test of time.”

POPPY WHAT A DELIGHT IT WAS TO VISIT THIS STUNNING ROOM. Bursting with happiness and bright energy, we were instantly drawn into Poppy’s world. A joyful world of play and laughter.

PHOTOGRAPHY FRANÇOISE BAUDET DESIGN SAMANTHA HOWKINS STYLING MADELINE MCFARL ANE

P

oppy’s mum, Samantha Howkins, was inspired to create this room to be just like Poppy herself – vibrant and fun-loving. As a sassy and energetic four-yearold, Poppy’s room had to be full of character. Sam achieved this with bright pops of colour throughout, personal touches such as Poppy’s own art work on display, and a bold, personalised keepsake on the wall.

“The Incy Interiors Sybella Ottoman is perfect for Poppy’s toys and the chest of drawers (Malm by Ikea) for everything else” says Sam. The use of layered Rachel Castles linen on the bed and art on the walls brings a consistency to the colour palette that calms the room down, keeping it in-line with the rest of the home. The Artek Alvar Aalto stool in orange was an inspired choice. Its classic, minimalist design brings an unexpected elegance to the room without sacrificing character.

Sam’s natural style is modern and minimal. It is a theme that runs through the entire home and may be considered contrary to bright and characterful. Sam was able to balance this with considered storage and sophisticated patterns in complementary tones.

Functionality was key to creating this space. It is stylish, of course, but also practical and low maintenance. “Poppy loves to take herself off to corners of her room to immerse herself in play” explains Sam. It was essential that the room catered for this with dedicated, clutter-free play spaces for Poppy and her friends to enjoy. “One of my favourite things about the space is the fact that the room can become a play space with things everywhere, and quickly contract back into a tidy room – it’s a functional space that Poppy loves playing in” says Sam.

The period features in this space are breathtaking. The stunning fireplace, high ceilings and stain glass windows are classic features of the era. However, working with such beauty was not without its challenges. Nailing the floor plan was tricky. Sam carefully resolved this by keeping the furniture minimal and neutral. P 98

Poppy’s bed was lovingly crafted by her grandfather and is one of Poppy’s favourite features. It feels right at home centrally located in the room, nestled in the original arches reminiscent of the original home. With its layers and textures, it is a welcome sight on entry to the room. Poppy’s dolls’ house is a stand out. It was custom made by Whimsy Woods and the attention to detail is phenomenal. The open front is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Located in its own little nook, Sam has created a well-loved play space that could not be more fitting for the home. Its neutral design makes a statement yet it does not overwhelm in the slightest. This room so gracefully balances the practicalities with style. The considered design is a gift that Poppy and her friends will enjoy for years to come.

DESIGN CHRISTINE ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY FRANÇOISE BAUDET WORDS CELINE BARNES

Asher Rose S

Christine was inspired by the rest of the house which she describes as “having a relaxed resort feel – something that I wanted to bring through to the kids’ zone while ensuring the rooms were practical and functional.” The two rooms are connected by a white, lightfilled, walk-through bathroom which, according to Christine, “Should make bath time a breeze and provide a fun shared space for the kids.” Ironically, it was the connected bathroom which caused the most headaches. Christine clarifies, “Having three doorways and two windows in each room meant that the positioning of the furniture had to be meticulously considered.” The rooms also needed to feature storage, storage and more storage as Christine explains, “I wanted the rooms to feel restful and not overcrowded with belongings.” Christine worked on the joinery with the cabinet maker she used for the house. The walk-in-robe is truly every girl’s dream and Christine states, “We executed the cabinetry perfectly, it tells a story between the room and the wardrobe.” P 103

ince the 2016 inaugural Minty printed edition which featured Asher Rose’s nursery, the Rose family has taken on the challenge of a new house build. Powerhouse Mum, Christine , has project managed the build while on maternity leave and was thrilled to tackle the interiors. Christine says, “I spent 13 years in creative roles, such as visual merchandising, event and property styling and interior design, so designing these two rooms came naturally to me.”

MILLER'S ROOM For baby number two, Miller, Christine sought to transcend expectations. “I wanted a little girl’s space that was full of pieces that were not in your traditional nursery,” confirms Christine. Her style choices also needed to be relevant for a big girl’s bedroom which the space would need to morph into in a few years’ time. Christine has assured longevity of the room by keeping the canvas blank and adding colour through linen, books and toys, which can be taken away once outgrown. Christine declares, “I knew I was having a girl and the Coco

Doll by Little Peach and Pip was the first girly thing I bought. I still wanted the nursery to be girly but in a neutral and calm manner.” Remaining consistent with the chilled vibe in the rest of the home, décor like the Piper Shelf from Jesse Cleay and the Shibui Nursery Mobile from Beton Studios is natural, earthy and textured. The twined wall art is a uniquely beautiful piece found in a coastal store years ago and one Christine says she, “Never gets tired of looking at.”

ASHER'S ROOM

The owner of the other room is of course Asher, who is now three. His room also needed to factor in longevity, and not be too precious for its super active inhabitant. Christine notes, “I chose clean white walls to showcase the things that we love with just a few different shades of blue and grey to make the room feel a little masculine.” The brief has been met with subtle flair using elements like the bedside table from MCM House and linen bedding from In Bed Store. While visitors to Asher’s

room might be captured by the large Koala Print from Temple and Webster, Christine confirms, “The focal point for me is the custom wooden name piece by Louie Lux on the wall, which he has had since birth and goes perfectly with the palm leaf underneath it.” Christine has set the scene brilliantly for her two children to enjoy their linked rooms both now, and into the future.
