BEDTIME BLISS

KRISTY WITHERS, FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF INCY INTERIORS FORECASTS BEDDING TRENDS FOR 2017.

CANDY - CRUSH 2017 will be rainbows of fun! Lighten up and contrast your décor by mixing in shades of purple, pink and mint – for instant fun, throw down a candy-coloured rug.

METALLIC Warm metals like copper, brass and rose gold will continue to take the throne in 2017. Everything feels Rosy when you rest in the Rose Gold Eden Bed. This statement piece is timeless and will help you move into Autumn with a more polished frame of mind.

VELVET This year will command royal treatment and its own definitive sense of chic. Decorative velvet throws, quilts and cushions are a few of the simplest ways to bring a little grandeur to a bedroom, but nothing beats a statement settee or master bedhead. We love the Sybilla Sette – its soft pink shade helps to balance out the heavy weight of the velvet fabric.

We’re going goth this year. Black has once again been embraced by many designers around the globe and is progressively creeping back into homes. There is a strong presence of graphic prints and black and white typographic artworks that will add dimension to pillows, bedding and even bean bags! For the wall we love Lo & Co Interior’s Large Feather Wall Pad (RRP $149) which is fluffy and fun and brings in some artistic intelligence to the room.

IT’S A BLACKOUT

VINTAGE 2017 we are taking a trip back to enjoy a little bit of vintage with a contemporary twist and turn. Share a piece of the past with your little ones and enjoy a retro rewind. Tutu Du Monde’s Tuelle pom poms (RRP $20.77) are dreamy and a magical addition to any interior space. Create vintageinspired magic with these clouds of puffball delight, suspended from satin ribbon or simply displayed on a surface. These pom poms will add a little touch of vintage enchantment.

NATURAL Simplicity and lightness are at the forefront of design in 2017, with natural and whitewash tones taking the lead. A neutral colour palette is the key to a great child’s room because you can subtly or dramatically change the room by adding pops of colour and experiment with playful accessories like bed linen, cushions and throws. This season brighten up a pale wall with an Inky Wink Pillow case (RRP $89). This lovely linen is pre-washed to give a relaxed look with a glamourous understatement so you can stay nat-u-ral. ndrea Rembeck can’t sit still, “I wanted to create a business to combine my passions of designing and travelling and being my own boss,” says Andrea Rembeck, the creative dynamo behind the stunning Tutu du Monde label - a truly unique girls’ clothing brand, renowned for its exquisitely hand-crafted tutus, dresses, capes and accessories.

Lisa Ho and Fleur Wood, and developed designs for Urban Outfitters in the US. It was then Andrea started designing her own label – living the Australian dream – which was represented in Australasia and the US.

Andrea’s career in fashion was more or less sealed when, as a child, she would explore her grandmother’s attic and delve into the many treasures that fed her imagination and dreams, creating “rather imaginative outfits”. Andrea remembers that even as a child she was drawn to “beautiful lace, beaded and broderie anglaise dresses, slips and hats”.

Tutu du Monde began with Andrea’s quest for a tutu for her own little girl – a fouryear-old fussy dresser!

On graduating from ESMOD, the prestigious French fashion college, German-born Andrea was asked to design for ESCADA. However, she followed her dream of migrating to Australia, drawn by her longing for adventure, the relaxed lifestyle, pleasant climate and can-do attitude. Here she consulted for a number of leading Australian brands including Collette Dinnigan,

Tutu du Monde began with Andrea’s quest for a tutu for her own little girl – a four-year-old

fussy dresser! Faced with market offerings of uninspired and uninspiring mass-produced, pink polyester, Andrea instinctively drew on her own considerable design talent and experience, and decided to create her own tutus. Thus, the brand was born and formally launched in 2009. Tutu do Monde now has a formidable global presence that boasts a celebrity following. Six years down the track, Tutu Du Monde is WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU 25

now stocked in stores around Australia and the world including Harvey Nichols in London, Kuwait and Dubai, ABC home in New York and American retail giant J.Crew. Tutu du Monde is the destination for mothers who want a more sophisticated look for their daughters, but with the old-world charm and appeal of ethereal French ballet styles in muted dusty pastels. Today, with Andrea’s hands-on approach, the brand continues to flourish and evolve while remaining true to its founder’s mission – to capture the joy, fantasy and magic of childhood’s landscape. The signature tutus have the look and feel of vintage pieces rendered in delicate pastels, finest tulle and softest natural cotton, all expertly hand-crafted and finished with silk ties, sequins, intricate beading and wisps of feathers. The seasonal capsule collection is often inspired by Andrea’s travels and the celebrations and hallmarks of the season, delivered with a contemporary twist. Andrea’s own fashion industry background and appreciation of haute couture is evident in the meticulous attention to detail and timeless, classic design. The fabrics are hand-dyed and pieces are individually crafted

by Indian women in a small workshop, applying the skill of generations to produce unique garments. No mass production here! WHAT INSPIRES THIS MULTI-TASKING MUM, ENTREPRENEUR AND ARTISAN? Andrea travels the world, immersing herself in different cultures and people from all the corners of the globe, which fuels her creativity with things seen, felt and imagined. She admits that the hardest thing for her during these travels is to be separated from her daughter. Says Andrea: “Alyna completely changed my life and without her there would be no Tutu Du Monde…It’s amazing she’s the inspiration for all of this and is now at the age where she’s getting involved more and more. She is planning to replace me when I’m ‘too old’. Hopefully I won’t get pushed out too soon!” Not likely, especially with plans to do “a lot more fun stuff” in the US which is the brand’s biggest market. TELL US ABOUT WHY YOU STARTED TUTU DU MONDE? “Upon the birth of my daughter Alyna, I took some time out to enjoy being a

FEATURE mother. When Alyna turned three and was able to voice her opinion she refused to wear anything non-girly and asked for tutu. I embarked on a quest to find one that was not mass-produced, hot pink and polyester. I couldn’t find anything made from natural materials, cottons and silks that’s how Tutu du Monde was born, in 2009.” WHEN DID YOU CREATE YOUR FIRST PIECE? AND HAVE YOU KEPT IT? “I designed the first tutus very much from an adult perspective as I had no experience in children’s wear. So they were pretty much what I would like if I were to wear tutus – scary? Maybe not all that practical but beautiful. I still have the first sample collection – it was so small, only about five pieces.” YOU HAVE A RATHER PROMINENT PROFILE BOTH LOCALLY AND ABROAD - DID YOU ALWAYS FEEL THAT THE BUSINESS WAS GOING TO BE AS BIG AS IT HAS BECOME? “No, definitely not during the first two years, it was really just a side project along other ‘adult’ design jobs but when publicity started snowballing in the US, I decided to make it my full time job.”

HAVE YOU HAD A MENTOR ALONG THE WAY TO HELP GUIDE AND LEAD YOU? “Not so much a mentor but I have a great network of girlfriends working in their own businesses – in all sort of fields, from jewelry designers to marketing, advertising experts to stylists. We all support and consult each other which is really beautiful. It’s great to be able to call on any of them and ask their opinion but also use their network and not just locally, even overseas.” WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO COME UP WITH THE NAME OF EACH COLLECTION? “Finding the right name for a collection is usually a huge team effort. The whole office sits together and has a brainstorm once we’ve finished a campaign shoot and we have the images. The pictures usually tell a story.” DO YOU EVER HAVE A CREATIVE BLOCK? AND IF SO, HOW DO YOU REMAIN PRODUCTIVE SO THAT YOU CAN DELIVER TO DEADLINE? “No, quite the opposite, I wish I could design more. It is definitely my favorite part

dreaming up new collections. I need to be across the operational side of the businesses which takes up a significant amount of time too!” TELL US ABOUT THE DESERT DAZE COLLECTION? “The photoshoot concept started with our design team getting inspired by those fabulous colours one associates with the capital of sorbet shades and mid-century cool. The campaign was shot in the depths of the desert in California. We drove off the beaten track to parched Californian roads, palm trees, cactus and dusty rocks which decorated the landscape. The ground was so dry it cracked under our feet and the hot days were sharply stabbed with chilly nights.

The collection has an intense warmth that celebrates a utopian summer: sunset shades, golden palms and rainbow pines. Looking back I think we subconsciously selected elements that required us to jump on a plane and escape into the wild, like pure Rodeos. The collection features new prairie style chiffon and voluminous tutus to streetwear-beach. This seasons’ signature-soft tailoring has been inspired by the wild allure of the desert, and effortlessly blends desert and design. Each piece is part of our Palm Springs Paradise.”

MAMA MAYA A MOTHERS QUEST TO MAKE A CHANGE FOR THE GOOD WORDS BY BERNICE CAMPBELL

W

hen Robyn Jones was in labour with her eldest son, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. While at the time, Robyn was concerned for her son’s wellbeing, her care providers assured her that a nuchal cord was quite common and rarely caused any problems for the baby. Nevertheless, Robyn was grateful for her access to world class health facilities and highly trained specialist medical staff, and most of all to the health of her now five year old son. This experience in birth lead to the gift that keeps on giving to new mamas both in Australia and all around the world. Not long after Robyn’s birth experience, she heard about the work of the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia (BKFA). BKFA provides training programs and clean birthing kits to women in remote areas around the world to

help reduce the incidence of infant and maternal morbidity and mortality. Every two minutes, one woman dies of complications related to pregnancy or childbirth - 99% of these deaths occur in developing countries. In a country like Uganda, 1 in 16 women die in pregnancy or childbirth. It’s a sobering statistic when, in Australia, this statistic is as low as 6 in 100 000 women thanks to our access to excellent maternal health care. While counting her blessings, Robyn came up with the idea of Mama Maya because “every women deserves a clean and safe childbirth.” Robyn explains “I took something that every parent of babies owns multiples of, a simple muslin wrap, and built a one-for-one model

Mama Maya makes gorgeous organic muslin cotton baby wraps. They make perfect baby shower gifts – unique, practical and with a beautiful purpose. The wraps are lux quality with rounded corners, beautifully soft against precious skin and generously sized at 120cm x 120cm. So even the wriggliest of babies will have trouble squirming free! They feature a timeless signature ‘spot print’ and are currently available in grey, ink and salmon. But it’s not just all about the wraps, that’s not the half of it.

I took something that every parent of babies owns multiples of, a simple muslin wrap, and built a one-forone model around it, with a focus on stylish, timeless design, sustainability and philanthropy. Through a partnership with the BKFA, the sale of each and every Mama Maya wrap funds one clean birthing kit and caregiver training to ensure at least one woman will have access to a cleaner and safer birth. In addition to the benefits that the gorgeous wraps provide to the mamas and bubbas who receive and enjoy them, and the direct enhancement to the birthing experience of women in developing countries, the wraps are also ethically made. Robyn is conscious that “Mama Maya is kind to both our makers and the environment”. The wraps are manufactured from GOTS certified organic cotton muslin, by fair trade manufacturers using sustainable printing methods and are packaged in a reusable bag, with recyclable labels and post packaging. Mama Maya launched in early 2016 and since then they’ve funded birthing kits for close to 2000 women in developing countries. This has been one of the biggest motivators for Robyn, who left the corporate world as an Account

Director at a large media agency in Sydney. Whilst the change was daunting, Robyn finds her new social enterprise “infinitely more fulfilling”. Not surprisingly, Robyn is inspired by entrepreneurial people who’ve left the safety of their corporate gigs “to make it on their own, take some risks, follow their heart and do something they are truly passionate about”. Luckily, Robyn calls many of these people her friends, and they inspire her to grow her business.

around it, with a focus on stylish, timeless design, sustainability and philanthropy”.

And with a tribe like hers, it’s not surprising that Robyn has a big year planned for Mama Maya. Off the back of a newly launched website, Mama Maya is adding two new colours to the range and have partnered with like-minded Thankyou Baby, a brand who is working hard to fund child and maternal health programs in the developing world. Robyn promises there are a “few other fun things in the pipeline already”.

CHLOE BROOKMAN OF OLLI ELLA ON FAMILY, LIFE & BUSINESS WORDS BY JACQUIE GREIG

WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU 35

FIRST LOOK Piki Basket RRP $37

W

orking mother Chloe Brookman – co founder Olli Ella – has her hands full with three children and a million-dollar enterprise… In this feature, she shows us how she balances motherhood, life and business with enviable panache. Launched in 2009 by sisters Chloe and Olivia Brookman, Olli Ella quickly became known for seriously stylish nursery furniture and baby bedding. In fact, at their very first trade show, they were picked up by exclusive UK department store Harrods. Not bad for a business born in the basement of an art gallery. “We started Olli Ella after designing a nursing chair for my nursery (what is now the Da-Da Glider),” says Chloe. “After a flood of requests from friends to have nursing chairs made for them, we decided to take a punt and launch our brand at a local London tradeshow.” Although the brand was created in London, Chloe has since moved to Balmain, Sydney with her family, while Olivia still lives in London, England with hers. They Skype every day and

love every inch of Olli Ella, which is stocked worldwide and boasts an ever-expanding collection including nursing chairs, rugs, nursery furniture, baby bedding, and more. Olli Ella designs are nostalgic at the same time modern, with Chloe and Olivia drawing inspiration from their children and from their own childhoods…

After a flood of requests from friends to have nursing chairs made for them, we decided to take a punt and launch our brand at a local London tradeshow. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND FAMILY. “I’m one of seven children and spent my formative years here in Sydney – prior to that I lived in London and then following high school moved from Sydney to Los Angeles (where I later met my husband,

WHERE DOES THE NAME OLLI ELLA COME FROM? “To us Olli Ella means the coming together of family, of the home, of friends – we took the name from Olivia’s first name and my middle name because when we started the brand it was a celebration of our sisterhood and realising a lifelong dream that we shared of one day working together.”

The Piki is just adorable and functional and one thing I have learnt as a homeowner and mother – you can never have enough baskets WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES IN CREATING AND MAINTAINING THE BRAND? “It has had challenges at different stages along the way. When we first started, it was trying to figure out all the facets of a business, from manufacturing to logistics and of course having to be involved in every single element of our business. And then as we grew, it was learning how to forecast, about staffing and expansion. We have met challenges every step of the way, but the brilliant part of it has been facing those challenges and seeing our way through them – I can’t think of a better feeling as a business owner.” HOW HAS DECOR IN THE CHILDREN’S INDUSTRY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? “When we first launched, the children’s industry was still very traditional. It has been amazing to witness the birth of so many terrific brands and designers putting their stamp on this sector and really shaking it up. I am proud of the role we played in this. In terms of prior to 2012 when we launched our textiles range, baby and children’s bedding was very much still teddy bears and fairies. We have since expanded into homewares

as our customers have grown and changed, but we still like to maintain a children’s range as a wink to our roots.”

Charlie). After getting married, Charlie and I moved to London and it was here that Olli Ella was founded! Two years in to starting up Olli Ella, and two children later, we packed up our little house and moved across the world to Sydney to open a second Olli Ella office. We now live in the historic suburb of Balmain with our three children, Tennyson, Arlo, and Nell.”

WHAT IS TRENDING IN KIDS’ DECOR? “At the moment there is a move from the over-styled nursery to a more eclectic children’s space, with neutrals and rich colours in place of pinks and blues. Also, the mixing of vintage with new is on trend, and certainly we have seen parents drawn to the slightly ethereal, boho vibe.” THE LUGGY BASKET HAS JUST ABOUT BROKEN THE INTERNET, AND OF COURSE THE PIKI WHICH IS TRENDING ON SOCIAL MEDIA. WHY DO YOU THINK THESE HAVE BEEN SO POPULAR? “That’s very sweet of you to say! I think it is because it’s one of those “ah-ha” products; one that every parent has probably thought at one time or another that they would love for their little one. Kids always attach themselves to different toys or treasure, and parents usually end up lugging them around – hence the name Luggy! The Piki is just adorable and functional and one thing I have learnt as a homeowner and mother – you can never have enough baskets! Everyone seems to be very excited about the Piki picnic basket with Easter coming up, but I’ve loved seeing how my kids have used them for everything from pens and pencils to collecting shells.”

SO YOU HAVE TWO BOYS, ONE GIRL, A MILLION-DOLLAR ENTERPRISE… HOW DO YOU STILL HAVE THE TIME TO PACK THE KIDS’ LUNCH BOXES EVERY DAY? “Something always suffers, I promise! Laundry is always backed up, amongst a million other things – but having a very loving and supportive hands-on partner and also getting help when I need it for household cleaning has really been a godsend. And early on I identified what my priorities were, and committing to keeping those as my focus has helped a lot too.” WARTS AND ALL – WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE OLLI ELLA BUSINESS HAS BEEN, AND THE DARKEST? WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU 37

“The highlight has been designing and creating products that I love, that are ethically produced and with my sister and best friend. The darkest was probably in the weeks following Nell being born and we simultaneously opened a third office in Los Angeles, and had staffing and cash flow issues – talk about dark times!” WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO BEING MAGICALLY CALM AND CONTENT? “Calm - I don’t know about that, I wouldn’t describe myself as calm! I’m laid back, and try not to put my focus on the day-to-day stresses. I’m also very results oriented, so when issues and challenges arise I will usually put a lot of energy into a resolution so that they don’t drag on. I’m content because I know how precious what I have is, and I could have only dreamed of this life when I was younger.” WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE IN THE OLLI ELLA RANGE MOVING FORWARD? “So much goodness! Including... a Big Luggy (for the grownups) launching in March!” It is little wonder that Olli Ella pieces are frequently featured outside the nursery – the brand’s simple and modern aesthetic allows the furniture and homewares to become interchangeable between rooms. Perhaps it is this flexibility and relaxed style that enables Chloe to balance product development with toilet training, staff rosters with packed school lunches, and marketing initiatives with trips to the playground!

PARTIES 42 WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU

STYLING Melbourne- based stylist Mardi Mason shares with us the inspiration behind her own daughter’s first birthday party. “The theme for Georgie’s party was a Boho Garden Party. It’s definitely a style that’s true to me and one that I’m in my element pulling together. It’s also a theme that’s easy to style and gives a really relaxed, welcoming vibe for guests. We have the most gorgeous little cottage garden in our backyard so I knew that having the party at home was the only option. When I got married we had the wedding at my parent’s farm and it was a vintage, garden party theme so I knew I’d have heaps of pieces stored away at mum’s that I could pull out for the party. This included some of the furniture, the vintage lace table cloths, all the miss-matched wine and champagne glasses and antique floral plates that I mum and I collected from op shops for the year before the wedding. It was so nice to pull all these things about and use them again. I bought the flowers in bulk from a local store and Mum and I spent the day before the wedding making posies for all the vases and glass jars – It brought back some fun memories of the day before the wedding. I used a large tepee which is very boho, but also gave the kids somewhere to hide and play. It’s not hard to make inexpensive decorations that really have an impact, you just have to get a little crafty.”

STEP BACK IN T CASTLE & CUBBY

Children love to mimic the adult world in their play. We are inspired to create cubby designs that reflect the places and spaces PHOTOS they would be familiar with. We want our cubbies to have an old world feel to them which is why we use design, fonts and accessories that speak of a bygone era. You will often find us at antiques stores hunting down original pieces that compliment our theme for our photo shoots and for custom orders

MILK BAR MEMORIES For those of us who grew up with a local Milk Bar the memories are fond. The Milk Bar was an institution. It was warm and friendly, familiar and safe. It had an endless selection lollies for mere cents. We could go there on our bikes, leave the parents at home, meet our friends and ponder over red frogs and freckles until the sun was setting. With their homage to the Milk Bar, Castle & Cubby have stirred up nostalgia and brought back the magic. Reminiscent of a by-gone era their Milk Bar cubby ignites imaginations, encourages creative play and gives our kids a chance to escape to a world that once was.

ool, calm and collected. This is Ruby’s room, oozing sophistication and surety beyond her years.

A classic monochrome palette, geometric shapes and lots of texture gives this room a homely Scandinavian feel. But boring it is not! With just enough quirk to suit a growing tween, and enough sass to suit any mademoiselle. Ruby is a girl who knows what she likes. Like most tweens about to burst into teenage-hood, she’s a digital native and knows her way around Pinterest. She has garnered a strong sense of her own style, and with the help of the very talented interior designer (and her very own mum) Nicole Rosenberg of Little Liberty, they have created the perfect haven for Ruby to hang with her friends and escape her loud siblings. At twelve years old, and high school looming just around the corner, Ruby needed a new space. A study zone, a hangout space and a place to display all of her books, photos and treasured possessions were the key requirements to take Ruby into her teen years. Like any design project, Nicole consulted her client for the brief. As expected “Ruby wanted something a little more grown up.” But Ruby shares a love of interiors and art with her mum, so unlike most 12 year olds, the brief extended to “a fairly monochromatic scheme, no bold colour and a scandi feel”. Ruby is a big fan of greys, black and white, so she didn’t want any loud colours that she would want to change in a year. The room, whilst paired back and coherent, is a feast for the senses, with beautiful textures and differing styles all working in harmony. There’s so much to see and feel as you look around the room.

The fabulous minimalist grid wallpaper by Milton and King was selected as a backdrop to the room and “gives a contemporary feel with soft clean lines.” It’s a great starting point for any room and, as Nicole explains, “because of its simplicity, anything can work with this wallpaper.” The next point of inspiration for the room was uber cool artwork selected by Ruby at a favourite store – Norsu Interiors. The print above the bed injects a great sense of tribal warrior strength into the room, while the quirky skull sets you up to expect the unexpected, in this not-so-orthodox tween girl room. A gorgeous soft blue pom pom blanket beckons you to the bed. The leather pillow complemented by the distressed denim pillow and lush grid pillowcases all make you want to crawl right under the covers. The true uniqueness of the room extends to the custom built bedside table that incorporates more texture with a leather handle and pegboard, all whilst effortlessly maintaining clean Scandinavian lines. Above this, a quirky neon light amps up the cool factor, while the gorgeous raw timber shelves and tepee style tripod inject warmth, giving Ruby a place to store and display her possessions. A desk with lots of storage by Retrojan is the perfect choice for a girl who loves school and likes to be organised. Ruby is not alone in her love of her new room, and it’s easy to see why. “Everyone who walks in the room gazes at the space and they never want to leave!” LITTLE LIBERTY www.littleliberty.com @littlelibertyrooms WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU 57

here is no denying we live in a world of social media. For me, I find it a blessing. To be inspired and entertained by creatives around the world at the touch of a button is a gift. For Ally Batties, stylist and mum-to-be, the simple act of sharing her newly completed nursery to her friends on Instagram quickly turned into much more. The nursery was noticed in a big way. Industry heavy weights were sharing, comments were pumping and I knew we had to see more. Ally is a self-confessed design and style addict with over ten years experience working as a Visual Merchandiser, Property Stylist and Interior Stylist in Melbourne, Australia. She is a passionate and fun creative on a mission to create the perfect nest to enjoy at the end of a crazy day. About to embark on her biggest challenge to date – life as a new mother – Ally drew on her years of experience and drive for good design to create this warm and calm space for her precious newborn, Levi, to grow and learn. “We wanted our baby boy to grow up in a room that felt fun, whimsical and interactive but we also wanted it to feel calming at the same time” says Ally. The colour palate is a standout feature of this room. Ally and father-to-be, Zeb, were both drawn to green and the choice of Padded Leaf by Dulux for the feature wall nailed the brief. “Zeb painted a huge sample on the wall so I could look at how the colour changed during different lighting at different stages of the day. After many morning and afternoon ‘pregnancy’ naps on the rug in our baby’s room, I knew Padded Leaf by Dulux was the way to go. If this colour made me so calm and relaxed... surely it would have the same effect on our baby” explains Ally. ‘With green locked in as our main feature colour I then allowed things like the fox print to guide additional colours such as

mustards, charcoals, greys and blues.’ The Fox print from Forman Picture Framing was a must-have for the room, and one of Ally’s earliest sources of inspiration. Ally shares “while I know art speaks differently to everyone, I always felt a sense of mystery and adventure when I looked at this photograph, a feeling that inspired the adventure theme.” From there, the collage/mural on the wall behind the cot became the main focus and Ally’s favourite feature in this room. “The animal heads by Fiona Walker and the headdress are all fun pieces that can be removed and played with at any time. The button hooks allow for things to be moved around with ease creating an interactive play space. When play time is over and things are stationary again, that green wall creates an overall sense of calmness.” On route to Melbourne to shoot this room, I was intrigued to discover what else it would hold. Upon arrival, the feature wall was as breathtaking as the images suggest. The opposite wall however, was an equally exciting surprise. Ally’s attention to detail shines with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern; textures and levels a feast for the eyes. The colours add depth and the terrarium housing a beautiful fern brings more warmth and life to the space. The Francesco Bellini Rocking chair cannot go unmentioned. It is stunning and so welcoming. The Kenza rug by Freedom ties the two areas of the room together perfectly. Textural enough to create interest, and perfectly neutral to not compete with the features in the room. I love this room. It is every bit as warm and inviting as it looks. I have no doubt Levi will grow into this room for many years to come, and for now, newborn cuddles on the rocking chair, little eyes on the dreamy mobile and tiny hands exploring the textures will affirm the inspired choices Ally made for this space. design aesthetic of clean lines and bright pops of colour made an ideal bedroom combination for Kye Pethick, an adventure-loving eight-year old with a big personality to match.

space saving and is perfect for sleepovers with friends. It’s easy to imagine whispered night-time conversations of jungle adventures that have been inspired by judiciously placed potted plants throughout the room.

“I really wanted a room that had space for Kye to read, listen to music, do his homework and have friends over for sleepovers,” explains his mother, Karla. “I knew I wanted the space to have a big punch of wow factor, but at the same time it needed to work with the rest of our home.”

Elements of fun abound, such as the Kip & Co bedlinen and Lightening Bolt Night Light by Fromage La Rue, while the wall dot and ‘Kid You’ll Move Mountains’ print – both by Pony Rider – lend a degree of timelessness that will grow with Kye into his teenage years. Lack of natural light was a challenge for the re-design, as the room is located in the middle of the house with the outside window facing onto a patio. Choosing white walls and minimising the hanging artwork to just a few key pieces creates a sense of lightness and space, while the bright pops of colour also help to combat the issue.

In order to achieve this, Karla sought professional help and turned to Tess Beagley of Minted Interiors. Although she has a keen interest in décor, Karla struggled to pull an overall concept together and she appreciated Tess’ passionate approach to delivering a boutique personal experience that was committed to capturing her client’s vision in a style, look and feel that was completely unique to them and their lifestyle. “The design boards Tess put together were such a great starting point to help me visualise how different products would work together and to give an overall concept for the space. It was definitely an investment to hire Tess but saved us money in the long run, as I had a clear vision before buying a single piece for the room,” she says.

“The biggest challenge was the small alcove between the window and wardrobe,” says Karla. “It felt too narrow to do anything with, but I knew I didn’t want it to be dead space. Tess researched ideas and recommended the PS IKEA desk, which fits perfectly and looks incredible in that spot.” Tess was able to ‘zone’ Kye’s room to include not just the cleverly fitted desk for homework, but also a reading/chill out nook complete with super comfy beanbag and cactus-patterned floor cushion by Into The Fold.

Being on-trend and an overall cool kid, Kye’s bedroom needed an equally cool vibe. Loud pops of orange are fun and edgy (like the super practical IKEA PS desk), while a colour palette of bright greens and blues complement the black and white and add a boyish masculinity.

“I love how the combination of items capture Kye’s personality,” says Karla. “The design boards looked great and after seeing them I knew we would like the finished room, but it wasn’t until the space was entirely completed that I realised just how much we would love it!”

blissful, washed-out, nature inspired, palette with splashes of greenery and earthy tones creates a calming and neutral space for five-year-old Hosea and threeyear-old Pearl to grow, explore and blossom in. The creative force behind this enviable abode is the gorgeous Sarah Quinn, founder and creator of Bluebird Co. - a jewellery label specialising in creating personalised and meaningful keepsakes. When designing, Sarah explains she is “drawn to clean lines, timeless styles and pieces that are beautiful to look at and are also playful and practical for every day.” With a keen eye for design, it’s no surprise that Sarah’s signature style is reflected through her home, particularly in the children’s bedrooms and lounge room where the family gathers. Playful, functional, high quality and classic are the key elements that have been designed into the home. Light, white walls throughout the house provide a canvas to showcase unique keepsakes that the family has collected over the years. Most of of these keepsakes are inspired by nature, and feature earthy colours, textures, patterns and materials. The addition of plants throughout the house brings the outside world in, giving a sense 82 WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU

of freshness. Hosea’s room was inspired by his love of the beach and growing interest in surfing. He was surprised on his fifth birthday with his new special space. The room reflects his calm and chilled nature while also supporting his love of all things creative. Sarah realised that “Hosea needed a space to draw, create and display his prized possessions”, so homemade shelving and a long floating desk were incorporated. Hosea now loves to play with Lego, draw and read books in this space that is practical for him now and into the future. The Kawaiian Lion ‘War is Dumb’ patchwork wall flag above Hosea’s bed, and the beach-inspired ‘Palmy Print’ above the desk, were Mum and Dad’s favourite additions to Hosea’s big boy space. In keeping with a natural palette, a leather cushion by Mr and Mrs White, and linen doona, adorn the homemade natural timber bed. The gorgeous floor cushion by Children of the Tribe ensures Hosea has a cosy corner to relax and read. The trailing indoor plants add beautiful strong colour to the breezy space. The soothing style of the home is carried through

into Pearl’s bedroom - a simple light-filled space featuring soft whites and linen, accentuated by signature greenery and earthen textures. Proving that a huge budget is not needed to create beautiful spaces, the bed and play kitchen were handed down from friends and refreshed with a coat of white paint. The classic feeding chair was purchased when Sarah was pregnant with Hosea and its timeless style holds many beautiful treasured memories. “The prints and weaves on Pearl’s walls have been added over time and I love the way they represent so many talented artisans and companies that we are huge fans of” says Sarah. Gorgeous touches such as the macramé hangings by Creative Bowerbird and Family

Threds; prints by Blacklist and Kara Hynes; Moroccon Pouffe from Hope and May; and Leopard print cushion by Children of the Tribe, all add texture and personality to the room. Sarah’s passion for creating unique treasures and keepsakes shows in her love-filled home. Consistency throughout the beautiful house grows from “being drawn to products and items for our children’s rooms that are similar to the style of products found in the rest of our home. We find so many brands creating products that have a unique style and when we combine them, we love the way they work together. The children’s favourite toys, books and photographs add to the personality of each space.”

roving distance is no object when it comes to design, Tayla Harris of the Pink Door Co. relied on the ever-growing e-design trend to transform two rooms in one home. The Pink Door Co. offers Interior Decoration for kids’ and adult spaces alike, complemented by a retail branch of the business, both online and a bricks and mortar store, which sells a curated selection of home and lifestyle products. Their ethos is to create spaces reflective of those who use them, in keeping with client style, requirements, and budget, to achieve that ‘wow’ factor. When contacted by Michelle Tano, mother of 3-year-old Isabelle and 4-year-old Eli, to create new rooms to last, Tayla was delighted to oblige. “Michelle’s aesthetic is contemporary and colourful - she is a dream client. With her children outgrowing their toddler beds, the aim was to create ‘big kid’ rooms with investment pieces which are going to last” says Tayla. The inclusion of a queen bed in each room created the foundation for the design. ISABELLE’S ROOM Known for her strong and fearless personality, Isabelle is also an artsy girl who loves to sing and dance. She is loud and talkative and there is no doubt her favourite colour is pink. Tayla used this insight to create a soft and inviting space for Isabelle to grow into. The queen sized, rose gold Eden bed from Incy Interiors is the feature piece that inspired the whole room. The Anewall Contemporary Spring Flower wallpaper is no doubt a show stopper and the use of pattern and texture throughout adds depth and interest. The H&G Designs bedside shelf adds a modern touch. The Sitka day bed in dusty pink meets the brief perfectly. “It’s a fabulous and timeless piece of 92 WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU

furniture which could sit just as comfortably in a kid’s room as it could in a lounge or master bedroom” says Tayla. ELI’S ROOM Eli’s room was initially inspired by monochrome, Scandinavian-style pieces Michelle had won in a competition. The colour palette was further developed with some deep and contrasting colours in the linen and floor rug, including a touch of Eli’s favourite colour, green. ”The addition of texture, leather and timber warms the scheme and the feature lion print is a subtle nod to a safari. The result is a classic, moody space” explains Tayla. Known to be a perfectionist who likes to be organised, the clean lines of the Incy Interiors black four poster bed was a great fit, and again, a piece that will last for years to come. Eli’s favourite animal, the lion, featuring on the inviting navy rug, creates a perfect space for Eli to play with his cars and monster trucks. This room has certainly hit the spot. When asked if designing these rooms posed any challenges, Tayla explains ”the rooms are quite small and the client wanted to include a queen sized bed in each. Essentially they are all bed but we’ve managed to tick all the boxes, including practical items such as night lights and bedside tables, as well as the right amount of interest in the prints, cushions and decorative pieces. The children are lucky enough to have a playroom so their bedrooms are just for winding down, reading and sleeping.” Without ever stepping foot into either room, Tayla has successfully captured the essence of Isabell and Eli’s personalities and delivered rooms that will stand the test of time. It’s a true talent to interpret and deliver on brief, a talent displayed here in spades. THE PINK DOOR CO. www.thepinkdoorco.co @thepinkdoor_co

he gorgeous, free-spirited ten-year-old Stevie dreamed of a chilled out room with sweet pastels and a touch of glam. She wanted space to relax, do homework and, most importantly, hang with her friends. Introduce Tess Beagley of Minted Interiors and a beautiful, bright and whimsical space is born. Tess worked with Stevie’s mum Karla to create a room that would immediately capture Stevie’s heart, but be trendy enough to take her into her teenage years. Tess designed according to the brief, which was to create a magical space for Stevie that reflected her gorgeous, free-spirited and sweet nature, that would take her through her teenage years and provide practical places to sleep and study. Tess explained “I really wanted to deliver a room quite different – something clean and crisp, a little fun and sophisticated at the same time to match her age and personality.” The room incorporates pops of gold metallic accents softened by endearing pastels in shades of blush, aqua and lilac which is bang on the 2017 glam trend. Tess says the “pastels suit her sweet girly nature and the metallic adds some sophistication to the space.” The hero of the room is definitely the stunning Incy Interiors Rose Gold Eden bed. The MilkCart bedside table and linen were carefully selected to complement the frame without over powering it. A simple but elegant duvet cover with matching pillow cases from Hunting for George were selected to let the bed shine – quite literally! A throw and euro cushion by Sage & Clare, and the velvety gorgeousness of the penny round cushion by Rachel Castle & Things on the bed, create layers and depth while introducing clean, complimentary colours. As Tess illuminates “Those aqua and soft pink tones against the rose gold bed make the space feel so fresh.” A practical and inviting study space was a must for Stevie as she moves onto high school. The desk fulfils the practical part of the brief, but Tess and Karla were also determined to create a beautiful setting for Stevie that complemented the overall room. The stylish desk from Green Cathedral is made all the more inviting with an on-trend, but necessary desk lamp by Milk & Sugar and divine blush pink wall shelves by Rose in April to store Stevie’s treasures. Tess reflects “The desk, chair and shelving have converted

the area into a practical study space for Stevie.” The biggest challenge of the room was utilising and styling the area under the long high windows. In order to use every space in the room, a bench seat, where Stevie could sit and read a book, or where friends could hang out, offered the perfect solution. Bunting from Twiggarie Twig, a glam heart sequined cushion and fur-look throw make the space irresistible to Stevie and her friends. Designer Tess, and most importantly Stevie and family, were thrilled with the final result – testament to Tess’s dedication to working closely with her clients and producing completely personal design concepts. Tess concludes “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a Minted Interiors design come to life and a happy client. Seeing the thrill in their faces! We are completely over the moon. Stevie, her mum Karla and their family really are some of the loveliest people I have ever been lucky enough to work with”.

aving come across Nicole Rosenberg, owner and founder of Little Liberty, on Instagram, Asher’s mum Deborah knew she had to make contact. “I actually discovered the amazing Little Liberty through Instagram and was wowed over and over again with their incredible work. I loved how beautiful yet how different each of their rooms were. I knew instantly that I wanted them to make over Asher’s room” explains Deborah. “Little Liberty did both of my boys’ rooms but Asher’s was the first which, in a way, made the outcome even more breathtaking for me. It’s a deeply satisfying feeling to know that not only were our expectations matched but they were, in fact, exceeded.” Asher Miller is sensitive, compassionate, inquisitive, entertaining and a self-proclaimed ‘animal professor’. He loves books and all things to do with animals. Overall, he is a gorgeous little man! Nicole drew inspiration for Asher’s heartfelt passion and deep love for animals to create him a sanctuary – a calm and inviting space to be in and to house his precious things. With this in mind, Deborah was presented with two colour palettes – a bright emerald green or a soft blue. The blue was chosen to create a serene base for the room, as well as being Asher’s favourite colour. There are so many stand out features in this room. The timeless elegance of the stunning joinery designed by Mim Design is enhanced by a backing of soft blue wallpaper, tying in the feature wall. The grey circular rug is so inviting. It also serves to soften the lines of the windows and the bed, bringing balance to the space.

The Paper-Mache animal heads mounted above the bed are visually stunning and certainly set the tone for this little animal lover. “Asher also loves them because he feels that they watch him as he sleeps and stand guard keeping him safe, which is heart-warming for me” says Deborah. The abundance of natural light is breath-taking. The greenery paints a perfect picture and breathes life into the space like only nature can. The fiddle leaf fig placed indoors completes the feel – a true example of bringing the outdoors in. The custom-made House of Orange bed is a balance of design and functionality. Aesthetically, it is stunning. The warm grey felt sides create a cocoon of comfort and provide a gentle transition from his cot to a bed. The trundle underneath will ensure it is a staple piece to feature in Asher’s room for years to come. Nicole’s attention to detail is, as always, onpointe. The concrete pendants and felt pin board are bang on trend. Crate Expectations felt baskets provide stylish storage and the intricate details on the shelves add character. The further use of animals on the bedside table reinforced the theme in a beautifully understated way. For Deborah however, “My absolute favourite thing about the space is that Asher now loves playing in his room, reading there and relaxing in there. It is now a space he chooses to be in. He feels a sense of ownership and connection to it – that his room is his little sanctuary and a special, inviting space made just for him, reflecting his passions, nurturing his interests and making him feel good.” LITTLE LIBERTY www.littleliberty.com @littlelibertyrooms WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU 109
