BAMBOO [R]ECIPE “ I nspired
by Bali Green School, this project aims to promote bamboo material in construction industry as substitute to concrete and steel which are the prime contributors to atmospheric carbon content. Instead of relying on craftsmen’s availability and adopting intuitive construction approach like Bali Green School, the investigation of a standardized manual for recruited workers to learn and build with bamboo is the vision of this project. Therefore, this project started as a maker project to investigate both standardized natural bamboo structure and bamboo composite as modern material which would provide a sustainable f u t u r e f o r t h e g e n e r a t i o n s t o c o m e .”

Community Centre is situated on a site with contrasting characters on both ends: Joochiat street with bustling commercial activities while Lorong Changi Street portrays a tranquil neighbourhood which raises concerns on the inadequacy in communal living. Hence, this project targets at bridging the qualities from both street by bringing in activities from Lorong Changi commercial shops to attract residents from Joochiat Street. The resultant space would be a public living room which promotes communal living in Joo Chiat neighbourhood.“

As the site is in close proximity with bird’s habitat, qualities of a bird nest were adopted into the building design, such that it is consisting of inter-weaving structures and programs. Three visions were then proposed as guidelines to the futuristic design, namely:
Recreation integrated into daily living; Recreation occurs at doorstep; Recreation for multi-generation.
With the exciting and diverse recreational programs created, this project strives in providing active lifestyles for the future residents through a r c h i t e c t u r e .”

The entire construction of ‘Stranded Whale’ took only 12 hours with a well-planned workflow. The project started with two steel structures, added with layers of pvc pipes, together they serve as the main support for the sculpture. Next, split bamboo were added to shape the contour of a whale. The sculpture was finished off after covering the surface with used plastics bags.
